another rubbish day with a cold breeze from the north.

Saw something on the news, but had the sound turned down. Appeared to be several feet under water due to flooding or something. Just read it was Typhoon Doksuri.
You'll be used to seeing this kind of thing at the bottom of your street :)

Mrs. P had one of her restless nights, up at 2 and coming back to bed about 5.30. Left me a note to say sturm last night was worst she'd seen in years. I slept through it. Now it's back to our normal piss-down conditions.
Great day to be up on a scaffold, but I can't put it off any longer. As long as there's no lightning we should be ok.
hammering down all night and still is now. Need to walk to work in a bit will have to find my waterproofs.

Been raining on and off all day. At times the rain has been torrential, and as luck would have it, have had to have been on the road at the time. :(
Why is that some drivers just don't know how to drive properly in heavy rain?, for example having their lights on would be a start, and allowing for spray affecting visability would be another. :doh:

It stopped raining at 10.30am and stayed dry until 3pm. Exactly the amount of dry hours I needed today. Not often the weather cooperates.
no rain here this morning but I think that is only because it's got none left after yesterday.

Yep, they're designed to bite through a horse's hide, so have no problem getting through your clothes. And they're very quiet and can land without you knowing until it's too late. I just felt a bit of a sting on the back of my hand, looked down and there it was, with this smug expression on its stupid face.. I slapped it so hard I can't now tell which is the bite and which is bruising.
Working next to a field full of Friesians probably doesn't help.
If its mates are there tomorrow I'll be having an early dart.

Bit of sun today and some rain. Spitting for ages followed by a fairly heavy shower but it was brief.
After last few days I doubt there's much water left in the Atlantic for it to replenish from.
Anyway there was still a strong, cold northerly wind to ruin things so not to worry.

Yep. We have rain from 0300 to 1700 with wind gusting up to 30mph. The south going to get the brunt of it though so no doubt it will be all over the news.

Torrential rain yesterday - on cycle ride home from pub last night my wife and i went through four sections of country lane which had massive puddles. Each must have been 30+ feet long and up to 6” deep.
No mudguards and brilliant fun building up speed then standing on pedals :)
Arrived home soaked, but exhilarated.

Burst of recent rain. Has been dull, but now brightening up. Plans to go to a local highland games put on hold - even if the sun comes out the grass will still be wet and sitting on straw bales wouldn't be so much fun either.

Been raining more or less all day so far.

Think we had two weeks with no rain back in May. That start to feel weird once it got in to the second week.
Went out earlier and was surprised to see no flood at the end of the street. Looking over all the barriers it seems they have just dug a hole for all the water (and a couple of traffic cones) to fall in to.
Not an elegant solution but it has worked.
my own theory about the flood is it relates to a moated manor house that was near by.
The moat was filled in a long time back but I think the fill has subsided in places causing a dip in the ground where the flood happens

There is a row of terrace houses built along the line of the left hand channel of the moat and some of those have sunk quite noticeably. The two worst had to be partially rebuilt.
The flood happens in the bottom left hand corner of the moat where it juts out a bit.

slow drainage is a problem here as we're on the valley bottom and the slope is very gradual. The Dyno-Rod bloke told me that years ago.

No, it's what we northerners call "looking out the window", which in Britain is the only 'forecast' you can rely on.
Off down to the pub for lunch in a couple of hours for Sunday nosebag and a pint, but I'm not expecting to be sitting outside, even though it's currently hazy sunshine and no wind.

sun has half popped out now. been mostly dry with one smallish shower. still only 15c tho which for august is a little lower than usual. been a fairly cool summer this year without being nasty really here.

And they're the ones making all the spray :rolleyes: When there's that much standing water on the motorway, things can go wrong very quickly and with no warning. There's a reason why the speed limits in the rain on French Autoroutes is lower. We should probably have that here, and with the monitored 'smart' motorways we have there's no reason not to.

Today can't quite make its mind up. It's supposed to be heady for rain and thunderstorms, but it hasn't rained so far, and is moderately warm and sunny - going up to 16 C [so the warmth is radiant heat, rather than convection].

well it didn't rain for once but it's hardly been spectacular.

Mowed the lawn yesterday evening, just ahead of the overnight rain, and Green Thumb, who will be here tomorrow to do whatever it is they do. Sunny this morning, 13C right now.
I think mowing lawn yesterday may reduce the options on what they can do - some chemical treatments can’t be used on fresh cut grass.
My local Green Thumb pissed me off - i asked how much spiking and scarifying would cost, he said not to bother as he would spray a couple of times before making assessment. Guess what he suggested would be best for my lawn after i had paid for two “treatments” :steam:

Typical, and comfortable, RH in the UK lies in the range 50 - 60%. 70% is a bit high, and will feel 'close' and sticky.
Was there a throughput of air, or were the open window and open door in different rooms?

It got really quite hot this afternoon, and very windy. So when I found myself with half an hour to kill before seeing a customer, the idea of sitting under a parasol with a cold beer was too good to pass up.
The parasol thing only lasted a couple of minutes - one near me flew away and landed in the road, so they took them all down :( The beer was cold enough to make up for it though.
Typical, and comfortable, RH in the UK lies in the range 50 - 60%. 70% is a bit high, and will feel 'close' and sticky.

No same room. I shut the door and window now because it's noisy on my street at tea-time. It's down to 65% now.
Thought it may be faulty but the one in the kitchen is reading 64% so there's corroboration.

Got to self checkout, was walking to the nearest empty till, some wanker coming the opposite way walks past a load of unused ones and goes straight to mine. Wearing village idiot shorts and crocs so you know the type. Chilly and wet out so clearly shorts and some plastic sandals are ideal.
And if I'd beaten him to death right there and then, which he clearly deserved, I'd be the one to go to prison. How does that make sense?
I mean crocs, what self-respecting man would go out in public in those things? I wouldn't be cremated in them.

Anita got us crocs this year, blue for her, macho black for me.
I use mine for mooching about in. Once the shiny bit of the sole has worn away they soak water up and get squishy, slippery to the point of being dangerous too depending on the surface.
These are my oldest pair and well worn. I don't wear socks now as they hurt.
I buy the bistro design ones coz I'm like the fire bottle of shoes lol

As kids all our mums used to get us plastic sandals, five bob from Woolworths. came in brown, red, or white. They were great for paddling in the brook, and always lasted exactly one summer. I'd choose them over crocs, but you probably can't get them any more.
My mother was obsessed with getting us to wear sandals. And carpet slippers. I would never wear either.
Dressing gowns is another thing. Even now if I see my mother she will ask if I need a new dressing gown. I've never worn or owned one in my life.

I think Anita may have bought me one a few years ago. She knows better these days, and is well aware of my "Not while I've a breath in my body" list.
Along with tank tops - no! Cardigans - no no! Sleeveless cardigans - no no no! When combined with a comb over, it just shouts "I still live with my parents" :(

Mini-cab driver cardigan was always in tan or fawn colour too, never anything else. I think that was actually part of the regulations back then.
My grandad did wear a cardigan round the house but to go outside - always a three piece suit. He even did the garden in that although he'd take the jacket off if it was sunny.

I well remember a cardigan my grandma always wore, which buttoned up and had three buttons on each cuff, for one reason: Back in 1975 she came visiting while I was playing my newly-bought Captain Fantastic album. She really liked it, and borrowed it off me. Kept it for weeks.
Eventually I went round to get it back, and there it was on the radiogram with a thick layer of dust on it. "You've let it get a bit dusty!" to which she replied "Oh that'll clean off easily", and rubbed at it in a circular motion with the sleeve of her cardigan. When I close my eyes I can still hear the buttons clattering across the vinyl :doh: It never sounded right after that.
The radiogram tracking it at 85 grams or whatever probably didn't do it any favours either.

Just starting to rain now. It was inevitable really. Off to the pub now, for the fourth time in eight days. Not good for my Slimming World diet, which is more of an unwelcome interruption at the moment.
Maybe it is a question of semantics - but what is the difference between a 'fleece' and a 'cardigan'? Is it that the first uses a zip to fasten, whereas the second uses buttons?

Cardigans can have a zip as per the minicab driver cardigans discussed earlier.
I suppose a fleece could arguably be considered as a type of cardigan, but if you search for 'cardigan' you don't get any pics of fleeces.

A fleece has a particular type of warm fabric, you see them in all the hiking shops for example. Cardigans tend to be wool/cotton (or man made equivalent) in a more traditional weave.
Fleeces do tend to be zipped whereas cardigans are buttoned. I'm not expert enough to advise on the technicalities of the fastening side though
here's your classic 1970s mini-cab driver zip up cardigan. I say 1970s but it was possible to encounter drivers still wearing these up to around the turn of the century.

A fleece is commonly worn by 'great outdoors' types, and blokes working outside. Cardigans more likely worn by 'indoorsy' men who are either happily married or have given up on dating.

That doesn't surprise me Robin, I haven't given any attention to clothing fashions since my teens. I think I just latched onto stuff I liked decades ago and just stuck with it. Brands like Converse, Levi's, Kickers, Vans are what I grew up with, and are still with me now. Even makes that are relatively new to me, like Barbour, are by no means fashionable.
I'd still be wearing bellbottoms if it were up to me, but that's where Mrs. P draws the line :doh:

I do have a Barbour jacket which I bought a couple of years ago, which I like wearing, I don’t follow fashion far too old for that, I like to be comfortable and generally wear the same brands mainly Gant and Ralph Lauren, well made and lasts for years and in some cases decades.
most important addition to any gentleman' attire is good quality white underpants:ner: comfort and durability...always come first, and white washes best

Still spitting a bit, can't tell if it will rain properly again or not. I have a large steel workshop cupboard I need to sand down and paint (again), looks like I'll be doing it in the garage instead of outside. More dust everywhere!

tipping down almost all day. Had to go full waterproof to get to work.
Tomorrow supposed to be dry and sunny with no wind. Will be a first this year if we can get all three of those at the same time.

Clearly has rained over night - so overall there is a damp feel. Somewhat dull at present., but could brighten up. Not scheduled to get particularly warm today, and looks as though there'll be a threat of rain most of the day.
First decent day all year. Sunny, dry, just a gentle breeze.
Wind is back tomorrow and it's easterly again. Rain at the weekend.

How can they get it so wrong when giving us weather happening right now ? Can't someone look out the window ?

Cut the grass today, which showed some signs of it having rained recently, but if it did it must have rained during the night, as there has been no rain during the day for weeks.
0800 not a cloud in the sky, by 0945 it had totally clouded over.

Sun came out in fits and starts in the afternoon. No rain so far but it's threatened it and still time yet.
Someone at work suggested that they put some plants in tubs outside. Someone else says 'But someone would need to water them.'
No they wouldn't.
