Chucking it down
19.5C heavily overcast with occasional short showers.
We are at a boot sale and the short showers (only about 30 seconds in duration) are not good for the sellers: they rush to cover their wares, only to uncover them again.
rain forecast here for 1200 but then supposed to turn sunny afterwards. Might wait until the afternoon before venturing out.
wind gusts really strong... nearly blew me down at back door there. 17c and dry
Blowing a gale here too and will get worse later. Went out round to the supermarket earlier, it's warm-ish but the wind ruins it.

Actually the top of my head doesn't tan properly, with all the scars on it. The novelty of banging my head on things wore off years ago. Did it twice in 2 days last week - first on the roof of my van when climbing inside, and then on a low-hanging doorframe. So one bump in front of the other, I looked like a Bactrian Camel :(

Over 20 now. New cooling fan pressed into use with water and ice pack. It's helping.

Also I suspect square-headed dogs don't do so well in hot weather anyway. Our bullmastiffs used to really struggle with it.
20c here and lots of nasties coming in pm apparently.

Got half-way back and I could sense it brewing so picked up the pace but was still half a mile from home when it started. Just spitting so didn't get soaked but now it's really coming down.
Did get a massive haul of CDs though so worth it.

never had a tumble dryer... used to hang up outside but i of late just hung up on a horse indoors untill i got the heated dryer from lakeland. its a small fan heater and you hang stuff up above it on coat hooks, the you jip up bag and switch on.. works fast and it costs very little. in this weather you only need to hand stuff up really. put heater on for 5 mins the leave it
23c here now.. quite muggy so think the thunder may well happen

I always unplug the hi-fi from the wall during an electrical storm but the TV takes its chances. It's easier to replace.

its fairly rare for a house to get hit with lightning, but if it does, your stereo may be least of your worries.

Had a bit of rain earlier, but the sun is out again. No sign of any lightning yet - if it doesn't happen I'll be firing off a strongly-worded letter to BBC Weather.
My great aunt always unplugged the telephone and then hid under bed, with her arse sticking out.

Well the house got burgled in 1985 while we were having a weekend in the lakes. VCR was all they took. Bloody cat was a useless deterrent. It was only when my mate went round to feed him that the break in was discovered.
How the intruder fitted through the tiny window I don't know. Probably had an assistant who had nothing better to do after losing his job going up chimneys.

Just out of curiosity, how would the lightning find its way to my stereo? We don't have an aerial and the Sky dish is under the eaves, so not very prominent. The big house across the road looks a better prospect, though they don't have an aerial either.

if it hits house it will look for easiest route to ground, often in several paths. one might be the electric main. more worry would be it may start a fire in attic or inside any cavities etc.
its more likely to pick tallest thing like a tree etc, or a peron in open ground, but hitting a house isnt all that common.
the odds of it happening are extremely small but if it did happen you'd really regret not taking ten seconds to unplug.

Yes it was the electric circuit that got hit. Funny enough we had an aerial but it didn't go that route?

Why?
If you are worried about lightning strikes you need only unplug aerial connections, and those sensitive (read expensive to replace) items if your mains supply comes to your house via overhead lines.

My parents had their conservatory broken into. It was locked but one of the fan lights was ajar. We could only surmise that the "cat burglers" had a small child with them who could squeeze through, pick up and pass out a portable radio and pair of binoculars, and then squeeze out again.

Fortunately for us we got a replacement under our insurance. The guy in the house opposite said he'd lost a couple of routers, but what was surprising was that next to his house in the house next door, a whole bunch of bricks and fallen off the garage onto the car parked in the drive. I remember there being one hell of a bang.
Allegedly if you put up a lightning conductor the likelihood is that your house won't get hit - though I don't know that that's guaranteed. Maybe if you put a flagpole in the garden that would have a similar effect (a) diverting any strike away from the house and (b) reducing the probability of a strike to that location anyway, as that might discharge some of the electrical potential, thus avoiding the catastrophic breakdown.

Yesterday turned out to be rather hot and humid - perhaps closer to 30C than 20C
Today isn't looking good, with rain and possible thunder showers. Currently it's damp, dark and miserable. Maybe there's going to be a glimmer of hope in the afternoon, but it shouldn't be so hot today - maybe up to 22C.

Looking good so far, with temps in high teens, no wind and the sun has just come out. I had planned to go to the local car boot this morning (not been in weeks), but after yesterday's and last night's downpours nobody will be chancing it.
Rained most of night but dry so far this morning. Occasional sun but mostly lots of little white clouds. Quite warm but not as muggy

Wide variety in the likelyhood of rain predicted by the Met Office, BBC Weather and others. All predict rain, but the likelyhood ranges from 50 - 10% to 13 - 34% over the course of the morning. :scratch:
Update - it has just started to rain, so the Met Office 'wins'.

Same here, I mowed it last Saturday, and already it's long enough for small children to hide. And too bloody wet to mow. Looks better than 90% of the lawns on our road though, they appear to have given up.

Was up on Kinder Scout one time and got hit with a hailstorm like that. Of course there's absolutely no cover up there, the only thing we could do was crouch down and cover our heads with our Bergens.

Started out nice and sunny, not too warm, so we managed to make the roof of extension we're building watertight, just ahead of the lunchtime rain. So enjoying an early finish with no worries about water pissing in :)
early finish for me too, got soaked on the way home though. That fine rain that soaks you, plus a constant wind making it go horizontal.
saw all the council office workers knocking off at 1600 - first thing I'll be doing when I've got the power is making them do a full day's work. It would probably kill some of them.

This area (Heathrow) has regularly been the hottest in England and I have seen over 100F on my outside thermometers during July in past years.

This area (Heathrow) has regularly been the hottest in England and I have seen over 100F on my outside thermometers during July in past years.
Last month I heard that there will be some really high temperatures coming in July. But we're nearly halfway through it, and no sign yet. Though really I'd just be happy with a sunny 22C in the day, and a comfortable temp at night that needs neither fans nor heating.
hottest here was in borders last year at about 35c. not common to go above 30 tbh.. often tho it'll not get above 25c

Grim day. Wet, windy, not warm. Haven't left the house all day. I'll have to find a reason to leave the house tomorrow or I'll be going stir crazy. Got a twenty tip from a customer burning a hole in my pocket, so maybe a trip to the nearest record shop. Not been there in ages.

Similar, if not worse, weather predicted for tommorow. :(
forecast got it right, pissing down all day, and the winds made it to gale force.
They seem to be better at predicting bad weather than good. I think if they always gave out bad weather regardless they'd improve the accuracy rate of the forecast.
They hedge their bets with the forecast by putting up pictures of sun and cloud split and 50% chance of rain. This would suggest it could go either way and the forecasters will say they got it right.
More often than not they put up a negative forecast and it usually turns out a bit better. This is to try and make us feel good when it turns out better than forecast.
Yes - I have to explain to my partner the use of the term 'likely', when followed by a percentage. She will see a raindrop symbol and think it will definitely rain, whereas the accompanying figure might be, say 5%.

I think the clouds may be getting smaller (though my observation has no scientific basis). Several times lately it has been fine all day in Preston while tipping down in Chorley. And I swear once it was raining outside one window but dry outside the opposite one.

Reminds me of a cat my parents once had. She would ask to be let out (usually through the back door), but on seeing it raining, would turn tail and walk to the front door, thinking the weather might be better there. :lol:

They should round up and not down then. To me zero percent means there's no possibility of it happening.
Aren't these weather people supposed to be scientists? I'm a gambler, percentages are important to me.

Hell of a windy day yesterday. Everything in the garden has blown about, Hollyhocks flattened and I nearly got blown off my feet a couple of times walking the mutt :).

Surprisingly, it has not rained here for 48 hours. So I decided I'd put off mowing the lawn long enough. Piss easy with the cordless mower. So I got started, and guess what?
No you guessed wrong. The rain held off long enough for me to finish the job :) Even had enough time to give it 'stripes'. But it's now starting to spit. It's spitting! Everybody in!
sunny here, 15C. Have to go to my jury service in a bit, two mile walk to the courthouse.
Just checked the forecast and sure enough it's going to start raining.
They'll pay your bus fair but won't spring for a taxi, and I hate getting the bus. Plus you have to keep your tickets to get refunded, and last time I got a bus there was no ticket you just swipe your card, so not sure how that works. So I guess I'll just get wet.

It's been raining on and off. Not overwarm either - struggling to get up towards 17C.
I don't want to go to an ultra hot place. Just checked on where we lived in CA, and that's scheduled to get to 41C today, and I do recall that being seriously hot, though I survived up to 45C.
OTOH I wouldn't mind a few more degrees and quite a lot more sun here.

Anita's phone sends her 'a year ago today' photos and videos she took. Yesterday was the granddaughter splashing in her paddling pool in the garden. The sky is wall to wall blue and the grass hedge to hedge brown.
Forecast goes to the end of July, with no improvement in sight. So much for the predicted heatwave.
dull and chilly here but supposed to get sunny later, no rain on today's forecast but we'll see.

from a fiver per square meter. Quite a lot of it round here where people have covered their front yards or forecourts with it. Looks okay, no weeds, no mowing, no watering.
I'm afraid it costs a lot more than that!

Looks like a green carpet, a poor imitation and not very realistic. Also you have to factor in the 'up front' costs of skip hire for the existing turf; levelling the surface; providing a weed resistant membrane, etc., etc.

It all looks like green carpet no matter how much you pay. I went to Anfield, had the tour, went down to the pitch and touched it It looks and feels like carpet not grass. You probably can't get better artificial turf than that (or more expensive).
Of those I see round here the lighter green ones look more real from a distance but it's never going to fool anyone close up.

Right, grass done. Next job dog walk then Tesco run, followed this afternoon by fitting my eBike conversion kit to my bicycle, if I still feel energetic :).
