Visibilty moderate, and indeed low cloud descending into the local valleys - so mountain tops not visible.

That's the spirit! The way I see it is that the shortest day is 3 weeks off, so in 6 weeks' time the day will be the same length as today but colder. But that's because I'm a miserable git.

in four hours of heating have managed to get room temp from 14.4C to 15.5C. Reckon this has cost me about £2.40 so far. Need a better solution.

2KW fan heater running for 4 hours barely made a dent. I do have an industrial 3.5KW one but if you use it at home it will weld its plug to the power socket after a while. Ask me how I know.

Swapped to a 1.25KW convection heater now. Got another 0.2 degrees over half an hour, cost about 10p

Going to get busy with the duct tape and bubble-wrap tomorrow. Not putting up with this for another 3 months.

Planning to triple glaze windows with bubble-wrap and cover the two external walls in bubble wrap too. Then seal the other door (one is done already) with duct tape. Problem is it's a big space to heat but I think that will help.

yeah i get that, but 10/15 mins once a day, i think it would be ok maybe when you come home .. once up to temp it would be easier to keep it there

Pub might be a solution, spend your money on beer, and let the landlord pay for the heating :) I predict libraries will be busy this winter. And fitness centres, keep warm with some aerobics, and unlimited hot showers for about a fiver per week

The £900 I got for my Audion amp has gone on heating the house instead of going towards tarting up the MF amp's innnards, which pisses me off no end. It's costing a tenner a day to keep the house halfway warm, and we're not even into proper winter yet.

I wouldn't mind buggering off to somewhere all-year warm like Tenerife. But the idea is not compatible with Anita's need to be close to family, so that's that.

I would say £4 a day isn't too bad. Especially as you enjoy a decent temp. Our smart meter display is showing combined gas and leccy cost, which right now is showing just under 6 quid. We had heating on a few hours this morning, to 18C. It is now 14C so heating is on again.

Bungalows are probably not the easiest to keep warm, what with all that roof, and lost insulation could prob be better. But price of loft insulation has gone through the roof, pardon the pun. No cheap solutions,

Two evenings running we've had gritters going past our house. I've just checked my ice-ometer (bucket of water under the car port), and it has a 3mm thick skin of ice. That's as much as it managed for the whole of last winter. Doesn't bode well.

Around 2-3 C I believe. A light dusting of snow on the ground outside, and hills in the distance clearly covered in white. Hardly any wind.
Pity I put the cars in the wrong order, so some are blocking the exit, and will take a while to sort out if they are frozen up. I hope they aren't - but hope doesn't make it happen!
Right now the drive is a bit of a car park as also looking after another one while the owner is away.

As with yesterday had to defrost the car remotely - then went out, and drove around 15 miles. The car park at the destination was so slippery I could barely walk, despite having taken the precaution of using a trekking pole.
My meeting didn't work out, as the person I was to meet looked out of the door, and decided not to repeat last year's fall in perhaps similar conditions - sensible guy!.

Still I did have a pleasant cup of coffee - but no cake - at my destination.

The cold was causing lots of condensation in kitchen due to a dead extractor fan so I bunged (yet another) new one up yesterday, it's doing the job fine. None of your fancy moisture sensing nonsense or timers this time, that sort seem to pack up within weeks. Just a simple 25w pull cord job that can be used when needed

I was supposed to be fitting some windows today, but the end of our road is a 1 in 4 gradient straight onto the main road. Twice in past years I've skated into the path of other cars, and been lucky so far. But my luck will run out at some point.

Minus one C outside right now. Humidity is through the roof at 90%. How does that work when all the moisture is frozen?

Did some draught proofing in the week and lined the outside walls with bubble wrap, seems to have made a difference, temperature climbs faster now once the heater goes on.

Nearly at 14C now from a start of 11C and that's in just an hour. Previously I could only get a gain of 1C an hour. The ongoing battle of Man Vs Nature. Nature will lose!

Next week is set to be even colder according to forecast - Nature ups its game.

Snow started to melt yesterday afternoon, then froze overnight. Clear skies now. I never left the house yesterday, but we're going to have to brave the frozen solid slush in a bit to visit my daughter. And call in at Screwfix for some oversize wellies as per Geoff's idea.

with gas heating comes another issue... humidity, or lack thereof in house. got the humidifier on in livingroom and added 4.5% to it, which has in turn increased perceived temp too. its a balancing act. up to about 45/46 now. ive a machine upstairs that adds humidity in a different way while cleaning air. really helps with sleeping.

Our smart meter is currently showing about 11 to 12 quid a day energy usage, to have a daytime temp around 17C. I could improve things by adding more loft insulation, but not at those prices. Just have to put up with it this winter, and revisit the insulation thing in the spring.

According to the forecasts we don't get above zero temperatures for a few days now. We might hit zero tomorrow briefly, but we'll have to wait until Saturday to get above zero, with a more significant rise above on Sunday.

We have a light frosting of snow and ice outside, and I can see snowy mountains in the distance.

Interesting comments about insulation and draught proofing. Makes me think that even spending £2k on insulation over our living room and the west end of our house could be worthwhile - as that's a really cold room unless the log fire is on, and we don't use it that much.
Im not sure what the current costs of insulation material are.

Yesterday I set the T M3 to defrost to make it drivable, and it ran down the battery considerably, though I didn't check accurately how severe the issue was. I may have used up most of the overnight charge just getting the snow and ice off the roof.
I don't think I really need to go that far - so will be more conservative today. Overnight charge - typical cost now around £2.10 (7kW*4hours*7.5p). The same energy at peak rates would cost around £12, and even getting the timing for the off peak electricity wrong by a few minutes makes a difference.

I'll certainly unplug the cable before defrosting to make sure that there's no charge pulled from the grid at peak rates.

Yesterday was slightly odd. Must have been around 0, but there was some sun, and that must have affected the cars, as I was able to get quite a lot of snow and ice off easily. I guess if sunlght gets into the car, the car starts to act like a rather cold greenhouse, and that just gives enough extra heat to start the melt on the roof and windscreen. Didn't happen today though, unfortunately.

Your battery will probably be OK - and as it's a fairly new car any auxiliary batteries will probably still be good too. Some EVs may still have fairly standard type batteries as well as the power batteries - either for starting or as backup batteries for the security system, so a possible source of trouble in a few years time.

Should have a guarantee on the main battery pack anyway. Usually around 8 years.

Soho and Charing Cross Road have undergone major redevelopment. Dobells record shop is long gone; closed down in the late '80s, and all the seedy sex shops in Soho have also disappeared. The whole area has been given a facelift.

Wild and windy last night, and pretty wet. Still got rain this morning, but wind died down a bit, and definitely less cold.
