Yes the seaside windbreak. My father would pay to rent deckchairs but would never shell out the extra for the windbreak. His solution was to set up the deckchairs so they backed onto the wind.


Of course us kids did not get deckchairs let alone a windbreak. We were expected to use our plastic spades to dig a slit trench for getting down out of the elements. Even if the weather was half-way decent when you arrived on the beach the first thing you would do is excavate your shelter as it could turn in minutes. And usually did.

I was in Inverness at the end of June and it was like winter. I don't know how you manage up there it's bad enough here. There's only really 3 good months.

Another breezy and slightly chilly start, but 7C this time.It doesn't shift grass cuttings. The cuttings are typically only one or two mm in length, so go back into the ground. This reduces the need for fertiliser, and also does away with additional trips to the dump, or requiring a compost heap.

Of course if the cuttings were longer this would choke the new grass, but as long as the robot does its thing most days then the quality of the grass does seem to improve. Not that there's much grass at the bottom end, as the substantial oak trees take most of the moisture out, and much of the "lawn" is in fact moss and other weeds. As long as it's mostly green we are learning to live with that. Other neighbours have tried to retain lawns, but it's a big effort - and is it really worth it?

So he enjoyed a few weeks of easy access to his embarrassingly bad garden, before deciding that securing the panels with plastic cable ties would do the trick. That was Wednesday, and they're already down, but now with bits of them still attached to the concrete posts. And now he's moved them so he can mow the 2 ft long grass with a Flymo. I wish him well :)

my neighbour was into salting... it does work but you need to use a lot of salt and hope you dont poison the groundwater table with it.
