As DanJennings suggested, the old football thread is passed it's sell-by date, so here's a brand new one for the 2010 Season.

Well Dan, a good start for Villa, all things (and your worries) considered...

Chelsea staking a claim on retaining the title from the word go. :rolleyes: But hats off to Blackpool for a blinding start!

My team (Norwich) did ok today (0-1 away to Scunthorpe) - and with Stephen Fry now a Director, there must be a pun there with Delia at the helm, if nothing else... At least we managed to keep hold of Martin & Holt during the closed season, so there is hope we won't go straight back down!

Marco's Celtic got off on the right foot, Chris's (Stratmangler) Man City managed a 0-0, Martin (Macca) has to wait for tomorrow for what should be a good game on paper as his Liverpool take on Arsenal at Anfield.

Not sure it I've left anyone out who contributed to the previous thread last year - apologies if I have - to any of the more recent members, feel free to nail your colours to the virtual mast so we know who your team is and we can celebrate or commiserate as appropriate throughout the season - and of course, we all know it's a marathon, not a sprint!

yep, a nice surprise for villa fans that.... I've always thought they should give Albrighton a fair chance, maybe he'll get one now.

Chelsea were a bit intimidating (again) I won't look forward to playing them again, especially after the 7-1 drubbing when we had a stronger squad.

and of course, fair play Blackpool. A good strong entertaining first day of the premier league all in all.

I also hope Newcastle manage to stay up this year, I've always had a soft spot for them

Me too, they were my Granddad's team, and my very first memory of watching football on TV (In black & white, not that it mattered!) was with him in the mid 70's watching the Magpies, so still follow if not support them.

I'm looking forward to our next home league game - it's my son's 10th birthday that day, and we're at home to Blackburn Rovers.
We have tickets for that game - should be a big party - well I hope so;)

My son is also afflicted with being a Manchester City supporter - he became one on Saturday 17th January 2008, when we went to the home game against Wigan.
The game proved to be somewhat seminal for Alex (my son), as he decided that Goalkeeper was the position for him to play. Joe Hart's influence again.:eyebrows:

my expectations have already been adjusted.... I'll be impressed if we finish top half this season...

Juventus aren't quite the side they used to be, that fact that Villa beat them last season with a side of kids last year testifies to that, but it should be a good match nonetheless, I'll probably be watching.

I'm hoping that Sunday's game was just a blip, although City have been there before quite recently - dominating a game (well the first half at least) and failing to capitalise on scoring opportunities..........

It might in part be due to 3 tough games in 6 days, although at this level there are no excuses.

I wonder who's going where before the deadline this afternoon:eyebrows:

bloody hell, that was some afternoon of premier league football. thought I'd resurrect this thread because of it.

Villa played well second half, disappointing result, getting used to those now...
Our injuries list is getting ridiculous.

But what on earth has happened to Berbatov?! He doesn't seem to have average matches does he? He's either lazy or on fire!

good results for west brom, wolves, & west ham too.

As a City fan I'll bet you enjoyed the look on Fergie's face last night...

However I'm sure you'll all agree that the highlight of the weekend was Carlisle pulling off a tremendous win against the might of Tamworth...:doh:

We were behind twice!!!!

Still it sets us up for a nice local derby in the next round, Torquay, shame we can't afford a train ticket, never mind the air fair.

We've got a new hero - Alan of Red Bull Salzburg.
He came on as a substitute around about the 60 minute mark, and became an instant hit, with large sections of the crowd singing "Alan is Superman" amongst other chants (all supportive of the player by the way).

I see that a former player of ours is getting upset that he's not getting starts in games at his new club either.
I wonder if it's because he still thinks that he's God's gift, and doesn't need to prove himself on the training ground ?
He was the same with us last season - when he did make it onto the pitch he was a waste of space - and I see he's still got the same attitude issues now.

well I'm getting prepared for villa's third defeat in 8 days on Sunday, I know Chelsea are out of form, but they'll still beat us.
I honestly think unless something fairly dramatic happens in January, Villa will still be in a relegation battle at the end of the season.
Apparently we're getting rid of more players, Sidwell has already gone to West Ham, Carew apparently off to Birmingham, more talk of Ashley Young jumping ship to Tottenham, and Friedel maybe retiring.
Who have we been linked with? Joey Barton (huzzah) and Robbie Keane (whoop di do)

There's a lot of season left - positions on the table mean sod all at the moment.
Come the end of March and we'll all see where our respective teams are looking likely to finish up.
I'm hoping that City are still at the same end of the table, with a visit to Dublin on the horizon.

Steve Bruce always sets his team up well.

I'm not surprised at the way City were set up tonight - it was a game we couldn't afford to lose.
And we had some good luck twice within seconds, 'cos Joe Hart wasn't anywhere near both of those shots that ricocheted off the frame.
I think 0-0 ultimately was a fair result.

Chelsea are having a few problems, aren't they ?:eyebrows:

I was tempted to leave it at that, but I'll have a little moan.

OK fair play, Richard Dunn has started playing again, he was great against Chelsea, and he was pretty good last night.

Heskey missed a couple of sitters, played poorly and gave away a silly red card.

Downing might as well have not been on the pitch.

we deservedly sank down into relegation, and that's where we'll stay if we don't get rid of Houllier. The players don't want to play for him and it shows. He's already made a silly signing, and I bet there are more on the way. He has his eye on (you guessed it) more aging french players

van Persie has his moments, doesn't he ?

Last season he got stamped on for that reckless two footed studs up challenge on Adebayor.
To be honest at the time both players should have been sent off, and yet neither got so much as a booking for it.

Just as well when you consider that after scoring Adebayor forgot for a moment that he was no longer an Arsenal player and rushed off to celebrate in front of the away supporters:eyebrows:

Just spotted something interesting - the appeal against Zabaleta's red card on Wednesday has been successful.
Now it's not something that you see often, so I thought it deserved a mention.

Arsenal did not contest Sagna's red card.

At last some uncommon sense from the authorities, I like Zabaleta, very underrated, puts in a good shift as it were.

Carlisle are behind again...all the way to Torquay for this :(

Anyone watch the Manyoo v Liverpool game ?
I was amazed at the grit and determination Liverpool showed 'cos it's been lacking for a long time now.
I do wonder how long the Dalgleish effect is going to last.

As for our draw with Leicester City - it's called The Walkers's Stadium, and the pitch is more like the field that you grow the spuds for the crisps in. The City players are much more used to the billiard table smooth playing surface of CoMS;)

To be honest Jo should have scored (I can't work out why he's still a squad member), and De Jong should have too (everybody was Kung-Fu fighting.....).

Saturday is Wolves at our gaff - taking the lad to see our new forward in action, so it should be an interesting time.

Tomorrow afternoon is going to be fun for City - we've got an FA Cup replay against Notts County.
I'm getting worried that City are not capable of playing on anything less than perfect pitches, as this is the second replay we've got to play in as many rounds against lower league sides.
If we win tomorrow we then have the pleasure of playing Aston Villa.

I am naturally pleased with the score :) , especially as City played well, but next up it's Reading and they've already beaten our bogey team (Everton).

We have the home advantage, but Reading will come at us like it's the FA Cup final - hopefully it's as far as they progress in this season's competition.

Probably Veno's for a cough.
It's not the first time a player has fallen foul (pun intended) of that one.

They're still waiting for the results of the B test to come through - suspension is automatic if the A test comes back with a problem, if the B test is the same then there's a full scale enquiry.

I doubt he's been silly enough to play with anything mood or performance enhancing anything, but I can see the remainder of his season being written off because of it.:(

We only have 2 games in the next month, we have virtually no chance of qualification for Europe, all we can achieve in the rest of the season is hopefully stay up and stay above Birmingham City...

I have no idea why we would play a weakened squad, why play Delph when Warnock is now available, why only give Young and Downing 20 minutes of football, basically Houllier is a joke. We are not Man City, we do not have world class reserves, we need to field our strongest team when this is all we have to play for.
Why not play Pires after he finally had his first good game for us last week?

The man's decisions seem to make no logical sense to me, he seems to be picking teams at random, playing players out of position and youngsters out of their depth

Even Allardyce or Di Matteo seem like a better prospect at the moment.

Well it's getting interesting - 7 games to go to decide the top end of the Premier League table.
Yesterday's win was needed for the points, if nothing else - City's goal difference has certainly benefitted.
I would also think that team confidence and spirit has also had a major shot in the arm.

Our next league game is against Liverpool at Anfield, a week today.

Then it's the other lot at Wembley. Like many others, I can only dream...... it's been far too long, and maybe, just maybe......

There's a lot of season left - positions on the table mean sod all at the moment.
Come the end of March and we'll all see where our respective teams are looking likely to finish up.
I'm hoping that City are still at the same end of the table, with a visit to Dublin on the horizon.

Well the Canaries have managed to maintain their form (mostly) - the 6-0 drubbing of Scunthorpe on Saturday should keep the morale high... but we're still only 4 points above the playoffs, so could be an interesting end to the season. Still, much happier than I was 2 years ago when we were just about to drop down to Division 1... Successive promotions and back in the Premier really would be amazing... Let's hope we don't f' it up!

Players these days have too much power, and think they can just do what they like without consequence, look at Rooney's outburst at the world cup, or Ashley Cole getting away with shooting that bloke... disgusting.

First of all a confession Chris, as a Carlisle fan you're allowed to have a glamour club, and I have to confess to having a fondness for Utd.

However it was totally deserved...More than that it makes you think/realise that there's something fundamentally wrong with the lad, as insane as Gazza but not in an entertaining way.

The sheer rage he swore with at the camera had to been seen to be believed

I just don't think he has the intellect to deal with the adulation and the more likely the criticism...

It would be a brave man that would bet on any one of them to go down (or stay up) - but hopefully Villa will manage it, Dan - I've always had a bit of a soft spot for them since my Panini sticker albums of the late 70's!

I think Villa will survive. If I had to stick my neck out, Blackpool, Blackburn and Stoke to go down. Mind you, with only 1 point from the last 6 games, Sunderland could manage a meteoric slide...

A long phone conversation (post final whistle), dinner, and more beer got slightly in the way ;)

It was a good result - all thoughts now turn to tomorrow's game now and our opponents.
Both sides are strong, and neither will give us an easy time of it.

And in between now and the final we still have to perform in the league, as we're only 3 points ahead of our nearest rivals, and they have a game in hand :eek:
So if we're going to get Champions League football next season.......

It really can't be predicted - I doubt QPR will fail automatic promotion now, but I guess you never know... otherwise, both Norwich & Cardiff have similar run-ins - the simple answer is we have to win every one of the last 3 games and hope Cardiff don't do the same...

It's still mathematically possible for QPR to not qualify for automatic promotion - it ain't over till it's over.

It's starting to look as though Norwich might possibly be another destination in the Premier League fixtures.

As for the Blackburn result - we should have been 2 or 3 goals up by 20 minutes in, and I'm still trying to figure out why we weren't :scratch:
Good to see Edin Dzeko get his first in the league - from what's been seen of the lad it looks likely to be the first of many. Only time will tell.

The win was all important - that said we've got another five league games to go, one of which is against Tottenham.

And we see Stoke.
Twice in three days.
And their manager doesn't like being beaten by City (he managed Gillingham when they lost a promotion playoff to City at Wembley in 1999).

West Ham on Sunday - they're scrapping it out with the rest of the bottom half of the table, so three points would be just what they'd like to take away from the game..........

It's a good FA Cup tradition, backing the underdog.
If I were not a Manchester City supporter then I'd probably be backing Stoke ;)

Both teams have a lot to live up to and a lot to play for - Stoke have never played in an FA Cup final before.
City haven't won a pot since '76, although we did make the '81 FA Cup final against Tottenham.

I'm hoping that the FA Cup finds its way back up to Manchester, obviously, but the Trophy has to be played for and won first, and as such anything can happen.

You have to admit, winning the league is a pretty good achievement.

Man City deserved it on the day - though as a neutral I was rooting for Stoke (sorry Chris!) Still, Stoke can be very very proud of their season, and Man City have realised the expectations on them - so well done. :)

As I've already said, it's a normal British behaviour to back the underdog, and were it not for the fact that I'm a Manchester City supporter I would have been wanting Stoke to win it.

Between now and then we've got two important league games to try and win, 'cos you can bet your bottom dollar that Mancini is not content with fourth, and there's the possibility that the two teams above us could just possibly stumble and fall.

Watching MotD and wishing Blackpool the best for next Sunday.
If they're lucky Whisky Nose will put out the remainder of the squad, which will give them more than a good chance to stay up.

I hope they manage to stay up - they are one of the few teams that came to ours and tried to play - most just parked the bus.

Marco - wishing Celtic the best for tomorrow (you should have seen the sh*t the Rangers fans did in Manchester city centre last time they were down here - it's difficult to forgive them for that), but I too fear that it may be a bridge too far.
Still, it ain't over till the B in B blows that whistle, so who knows.........

The Europa league really is a poisoned chalice, loads of games and no revenue.

KD's doing the business as you say, next year should be interesting all round, particularly if Liverpool, Spurs, and City improve their squads during the summer...could even be a 6 way title fight :)

We did it.
Third spot on the table it now ours to lose - Bolton would love to take the points off us on Sunday, so it's going to be a tough game.

If we can keep third it will be our highest league finish since the '76/'77 season.

Tevez is also right up there contending for The Golden Boot - 21 league goals this season makes it level pegging with Dimitar Berbatov, so that will go down to the final game too.

My local team have just finished all their League fixtures..If a certain team win tomorrow night we get relegated lose or draw we stay in the first division..it's been a long hard season and it's out of our hands now..only missed one match too..and the wife loves to go to the matches with me..

The Bolton game for definite. City need all three points to properly clinch third spot on the table, and avoid having to play any qualification games in the Champions league.

The Fulham v Arsenal game is obviously of some interest.

The Manyoo v Blackpool game if only to see who is coming through the ranks across town - I don't imagine that any Manyoo regulars will be on the pitch tbh, what with the Champions League final being played next weekend, which obviously will be in Blackpool's favour, so no complaints from them.

Wishing Fulham all the best in getting qualification into the Europa League under the Fair Play scheme.

Indeed, Darren Ferguson on his second stint as Manager - Barry Fry is still with the club though, as Director of Football, as I mentioned. Not sure what a Director of Football does, but if it is anything like any other business, if everything goes well and the club gets promoted, the Director gets all the credit - if on the other hand it goes horribly wrong, there's a Manager to take the blame and get the sack! :lol:

I'm not surprised to see Van de Saar being on the team sheet, nor Scholes for that matter, as both might well be playing their last competitive game at the swamp, but Taggart has never allowed sentiment to get in the way of business, and he's got a very tough game to prepare for next week.

Stoke at home - draw (actual result 1-1 draw)
West Brom away - draw (actual result 2-1 loss)
Wigan at home - win (actual result 1-1 draw)
Arsenal away - lose (actual result 1-2 win)
Liverpool at home - lose.... (actual result 1-0 win)

The feeling is that this is the start of greater things, and stopping the other lot from making it 20 is just a part of it.

Given that you can't outplay them, I'm going for power and pace...shore up the middle and try to stretch them down the flanks

Keeper; Raina (Liverpool), probably the best in the world, with excellent distribution

LB; Cole (Chelsea), a horrible little shit, but has come the closest to anyone in keeping Messi quietish
CH; Kompany (ManC), a class act, comfortable in possession
CH; Ferdinand (ManU), if fully fit as above, otherwise Vidic
RB; ????? Perhaps Sagna (Arse) is the best of a bad bunch

LMF; Bale (Spurs), should give Alves something to think about
CMF; De Jong (ManC), power, pace and tactical nouse
CMF; Essien (Chelsea), as above
RMF; Valencia (ManU), was swamped last night, but with better support could still be effective

10; Rooney (ManU), was by far the best Utd player on the pitch last night, just remind him to stick to Busquets!

Here's a prime example of an American's inability to understand the local rivalries in English sport...

I lived in New York for for a few years, and they obviously have 2 NFL/AFL teams the Jets and the Giants...but because they're in different 'conferences' they'd only ever be direct rivals if they both got to the superbowl final (which I don't believe has happened), likewise with baseball. I can't think of a US city with 2 major sporting teams competing in the same 'conference' or league system.

I knew plenty of people who'd happily support both teams, and go to both teams home matches, at the same shared ground. The only trouble I ever saw at an American sporting event was 2 fat drunk blokes fighting over a spilt beer...well apart from the players brawling in a baseball match.

Villa and Brum hate each other, OK not as bad as Rangers and Celtic, but it's up there with Arsenal and Spurs, or Newcastle and Sunderland...

As a Villa fan I'm worried that our owner doesn't understand one of the nastiest rivalries in English football and decided to go ahead with it but we have him now we have to get on with it get behind him. Of course the minute he loses a coupleof games the pressure on him will be quite hateful.

I actually think he'll make a good a manger, you really don't know what's going on behind the scenes at Small Heath but we have better platers, good defence that just needs some proper organisation and one of the best youth setups in the league with some players who should be able to make it in the top flight.

Far better setup.

Also he's keep Sid which means he's got some sense.

We regularly have to lose one of our best players, this year it's Ashley.

however, if we keep Downing I'll be happier with him going down the left and Albrighton down the right - two excellent crossers of a football actually playing on their natural sides unlike the silly stuff we've done this season.

Albrighton has great potential.

Downing has one good season for us and thinks he deserves champions league football. If he wants to go and Liverpool pay the money he's worth (at least £20m in the current market) then he's replaceable.

I'm sure Milner will be enjoying champions league football from the bench next season as well.

Young is a good buy for Man Utd but he falls over too easily and plays with his head down a little too often. He can, however, be an exceptional player and I think he'll flourish with the better players around him. I wish him luck.

I'm at a loss as to why Arsenal let Clichy go for just 7m, he's a fantastic player. A great signing for MC.

Fab, it's about time he went to Barca, he has been great for Arsenal, but it's time for him to experience a team of champions.

Nasri, great player when on form. Would like to see him stay, but not likely.

Bentdner, happy to see him go.

RVP, would love to see him stay.

I can understand why, while the clubs Arsenal compete with sign top players, AW brings in unknowns that need months/years to blossom. Arsenal FC is a very - very - well run business designed to 'challenge' for trophies, and remain in the champions league (that's where the money is), without aspirations of world domination.

That, is why the players would like a new challenge, and all the best to them :¬)

I'm at a loss as to why Arsenal let Clichy go for just 7m, he's a fantastic player. A great signing for MC.

Fab, it's about time he went to Barca, he has been great for Arsenal, but it's time for him to experience a team of champions.

Nasri, great player when on form. Would like to see him stay, but not likely.

Bentdner, happy to see him go.

RVP, would love to see him stay.

I can understand why, while the clubs Arsenal compete with sign top players, AW brings in unknowns that need months/years to blossom. Arsenal FC is a very - very - well run business designed to 'challenge' for trophies, and remain in the champions league (that's where the money is), without aspirations of world domination.

That, is why the players would like a new challenge, and all the best to them :¬)

I worry about Arsenal If they lose Nasri and Fab as well I think will hard to get in fourth spot
I hate to say this but I think next season will be between City and Utd Chelsea might be their too but they also need to strengthen in mid and defence to match Utd and City

I think Arsenal will struggle. I think Fab has to go and they needed to cash in him last year, imo.

Wenger seems to want to do it a certain way and in some respects I admire that in him but sadly modern football doesn't really work that way any more.

Arsenal have some serios problems, they need a good solid no nonsense central defender, they need a workhosrse in midfield and they need and real goal poacher up front.

Look at Van Persie's scoring record last season, it was superb but where's his support ? They have nobody of the same qaulity to have up there.

Wenger has a job on his hands and it all went wrong when they really should have won the league cup and even that mess that cost them the goal ame from silly mistakes.

It'll be interesting next season.

I think you might be right Simon...
but lets face it, Liverpool are part of the big 4, it's Man City who are the interlopers!
Arsenal seem to be selling all their best players, and Man City, well lets just say the prospect of Aguero, Tevez and Dzeko up front is a little intimidating!

Two words, dude: footballing history.

Liverpool may not have won the Premier League title (yet), but what about the old Division 1, or European Cups? ;)

I wouldn't refer to Man City as "interlopers", but I know where Dan's coming from :)

All that matters is the coming season, and history is of no use when it comes to playing and winning matches.
While it was nice to win the FA Cup and to qualify directly for the group stages of the Champions League, that is now history, great memories. We've made a bigger stick for ourselves to measure up to and to beat ourselves with.
I think we'll do well this season too, and scare the big boys doing it too :eyebrows:

I hope you do, but I disagree with your views on footballing history. For me, it's a very important part of how a club is judged by fans and players.

Celtic fans don't sing the words 'and if you know the history...', in the song 'It's a grand old team to play for', for no reason, you know! ;)

There are only a handful of British teams who have won the European Cup (now Champions League), and those teams will always enjoy a certain status other teams don't - that's just the way it is, muchacho.

Hopefully, Man City will join that elite group soon! :)

Not a smaller team at the time. Jack Walker was possibly the first serious millionaire who proved you could buy the title. I think most football fans let him off as he was a lifelong Rovers fan and just wanted to see them top of the pile.

In context they were spending the sort of money Chelsea did - all relative now of course but at the time they were seriously spending.
