Marco, I assume you’re fairly confident about today’s game
Mixed, mate, as I think Kyogo's cup-tied, therefore we're left with 3rd-gear boy up front, so we'll see how that goes, although Abada is back. Be interesting to see if McCarthy plays, and if so, how he does.
No, I'm really expecting a tough game, similar to the league one recently, although home advantage will help us this time, and so could influence the result.
Big shock Aberdeen have been knocked out by Raith Rovers!

McCarthy is on the bench
Celtic: Hart, Ralston, Starfelt, Welsh, Taylor, McGregor, Turnbull, Rogic, Forrest, Furuhashi, Edouard.
Substitutes: Bain, Bitton, Griffiths, Ajeti, Soro, Shaw, McCarthy, Urhoghide, Montgomery.
Ah right, thanks. Wasn't sure if Kyogo was playing or not. For me, he's going to be instrumental for Celtic winning games, certainly comfortably, as apart from his scoring prowess, his overall work rate, even defensively, is first rate. Interesting to see both he and Eddie up front, which I predicted could be a fruitful duo.
We'll see how it goes. I think Celtic will need to get the first goal early to set the tone, i.e. the one they want, not Hearts.. That being the case, I think we'll win, but I don't see it being a walk over like it was with Dundee.
Marco.
3-2 to Celtic. Yasss!
Scoreline makes it look closer than it was, as Hearts got a goal back in the last minute of extra time (having earlier scored a penalty, but it could've been a lot more for Celtic had it not been for 3-4 good saves from Craig Gordon. Kyogo, once again, was the star of the show, alongside Rogic, and scored a great goal that turned out to be the winner.
However, I was pretty much right in my prediction: a win, but made much harder to work for it than we've had recently! More comment later:cool:

Didn’t watch the game but from the updates appeared to have been all Celtic
looks like defence switched off a bit; can happen if your not used to having 70%+ of game
Didn’t watch the game but from the updates appeared to have been all Celtic
In the first half, yes - total domination, which if it hadn't been for Gordon would've been game over. Second half, Hearts were much better, especially when Ginnelly came on and they started pressing more.
However, Celtic still had the bulk of possession, but Hearts were much more in the game and looked dangerous on the break. Then Kyogo scored the third, for me just at the right time, because it took the wind out of Hearts' sails a bit, but they still continued to press and probe and were rewarded with that late second goal, after a poor clearance from Starfelt. who also gave away the penalty for Hearts.
To an extent, the jury's out on Starfelt, who I think is still settling into the Scottish game. His performances in Europe have looked much more assured, and I think he'll benefit greatly when Julien returns (as indeed will the whole Celtic defence). However, it's still an area we badly need to strengthen, and I 'm confident that we'll have some new additions in that area coming in this week.
Just to make one point on Hearts... Make no mistake, they're a very capable outfit under Robbie Nielsen, and you can see why that before today's game they were unbeaten and currently are league leaders, so it's no 'flash in the pan'. If they can keep their key players fir and continue playing well, then they'll give any team in the SPL a good game, including Rangers.
Marco.
looks like defence switched off a bit; can happen if your not used to having 70%+ of game
No, it wasn't like that, mate. Their defence was superb throughout the game and was simply undone by very quick/lethal Celtic play and finishing.
What they were guilty of was being too passive in the first half and not pressing Celtic enough, but as I said, they improved on that in the second half, and TBH, had it not been for Kyogo's goal, the game could've gone to extra time.
Some of the changes Celtic made late in the game (four in total), over two double substitutions, simply to give some players a rest and rotate the squad a bit, backfired and took the tempo out of the game/upset the team's rhythm, which played in Hearts' favour.
All in all, a good win, and with both Hearts and Aberdeen now out of the competition, it could be good news for either of the old firm, who both got favourable home draws in the next round, against Raith Rovers and Livingston.
Marco.
no i meant the celtic defence. anyway not to worry. its another win so you'll be happy; they beat you last game so revenge is sweet
Ah yes, sorry... In that case, no, not really. As I said, the two double-substitutions Celtic made upset their rhythm a bit, so some players were out of position, coupled with poor defending from Starfelt.
Overall, Hearts made a good fist of it, and had Ginnelly (who made a big difference when he came on) been playing from the start, and Hearts applied themselves better in the first half, things could've been different.
Marco.
shows the strength of the epl, as spurs defeat city 1-0. and thats without kane. no draws in the division this week and i think it will be an interesting season. big win away from w ham too.
Indeed. Surprised that Brendan Rodgers hasn't secured a move to a bigger club (I think he deserves one of the top jobs in the EPL), as I think he's taken Leicester as far as he can.

duno, leic are a good side. he gets another successful season and he might get an offer, but think he is currently very happy. its not always the size but the quality
Yeah I know what you mean (although princess size-queen would disagree:eyebrows:), but BR's an ambitious bassa (with a HUGE ego), so will want a 'Man Utd', 'Chelsea'' or 'Arsenal' on his CV, along with Liverpool and Celtic, sooner, rather than later!
Leicester was only ever meant to be a stepping stone to bigger things, and I feel that step now needs taken.
Marco.
Also, in my view, Leicester are only a good team because he's made them so, much like Ranieri did, therefore without someone at the helm of their quality, Leicester would be a mid-table team at best, and at worst potential relegation material.
BR needs a bigger challenge now, before there's a risk of him becoming jaded. Just my view:)

He was the manager of the biggest club in England, but he was (unfairly, in my view) sacked.
The problem was that he never had a plan B and his arrogance pissed some people off. Liverpool should have been champions in 2014.
Yeah, Patrick, I agree. However, I think BR's a better manager now, with the experienced he's gained since (largely having learned from his mistakes), than he was when he was at Liverpool:)

Well done to Celtic tonight, good result
Thanks, mate. I've just watched it on Celtic TV! Yup, a good result and clean sheet, thanks mainly to the young boys in our defence and Joe Hart, who's getting better/more assured with each game. Kyogo scoring again was also good news - he looks like a snip at £4.5m!
Just a pity we couldn't have got the third, with that almighty goal line scramble at the end of the second half, as I think that would've killed the tie. Still plenty of work to do in Holland, as they were a good side, who I think will certainly cause us some problems at home.
However, hopefully we can sign some more players and strengthen our defence before then. In that respect, it looks like Juranovic is on his way: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/josip-juranovic-celtic-transfer-deal-24787601
Middle to front though, we look scintillating at times. with frightening pressing, pace and movement, and as such like we're capable of scoring against anyone. Still nowhere near the finished article yet though, but looking more impressive with every game!
Marco.
Yes just seen that. 2-0 is a good score to take away

1-0 really poor first half, not seeing my we signed Lundstrum 2 stupid bookings within minutes of each other, second half better with only 10 men. We should be beating these teams with something to spare.

Piss poor
poor first half i heard.. second was better; pressed better with 10.
Just looked to see who was sent off, and it was the new boy. Did he do much other than that?;)
Like I said, it's a win and a clean sheet, but as I've said before, Rangers are defo lacking a cutting edge. Lucky that Morelos was there to bail you out. However, it looks like he's staying for this season, and you'll need him!
It'll be a hard slog at their ground, as these places (and types of countries) are not easy to secure a win in, but I still think you'll have enough to do it. We (as in Scotland) really need both Rangers and Celtic in the Europa League group stages.
It's not over for us yet either, despite our 2-0 lead, as I think AZ will be dangerous at home, so we'll need to shore up our defence and get some more signings in before that game. The first goal, and who scores it, will be crucial.
Marco.
not sure you'll be allowed to add anyone.. ties are locked i think with squad you show before first game.
i didnt see game obviously but i dont think lundy did much other than foul;) wright, davis and bassey were supposedly best.
Ah yes, you're probably right. In that case, there's still plenty of work to do!
Not sure I rate Lundy - seems a bit of a 'hammer thrower' to me. You need more flair and creativity in the middle of the park.
Marco.
signed Juninho Bacuna yesterday from huddersfield. originally from gronnigan in holland. might add a bit of flair in midfield.

Cool... You certainly need help in that area of the park.
Marco.
not sure you'll be allowed to add anyone.. ties are locked i think with squad you show before first game.
I've been doing a little digging around, and apparently you're allowed one change per round, i.e. one new player in, so if the Juranovic deal goes through, which seems likely, he could feature in the 2nd leg against AZ.
TBH though, regardless of that, I couldn't see Ange dropping Ralston, just like that, as he's been excellent. For me, no way is that going to happen. So if we get through, he'll come into the equation for the group stages.
As I said before though, our defence won't start to look more solid until Jullien returns, which seems likely to be another couple of months yet, or another quality central defender, which I think will happen before the window closes. One way or another though, Starfelt needs support, and to play alongside someone better than him, which will in turn improve his game.
One good thing that's emerged from the Celtic board's 'lackadaisical' approach to signing new players on time for any given new season, including this one, is the likes of Ralston and Welsh being allowed to show what they can do, when given a sustained run in the team, and in that respect Welsh, for such a young lad, has been superb, as of course has Ralston, to the extent now that when we do sign quality replacements for them, they've ably shown that they're capable backups:)
We'd never have found that out before, had we signed the players we should've done before playing the CL qualifiers, as neither of the above would've been given a sniff. However, both have now enjoyed plenty of game time in crucial matches, so will benefit from that experience enormously:cool:
Marco.
our main issue with europe is too many of our squad is not uk/scottish/club trained. its a rule that aids big teams yet again. but i would like to see more scots in team. alas other clubs wont sell so it does nt happen.

Not seen the game, although was listening on the radio to all the games, the questions were , why was the Celtic player not sent off for a similar challenge, why was the the St Mirren goal disallowed, too be in honest don’t really care too much, St Mirren are of course the great unwashed, for anyone with a Morton connection. always enjoy St Mirren getting pumped.
I've been out all day, mate, and only found out the result by asking a friend to check it on this phone. I'll give you my opinion on those questions later, and on how Celtic played, after I've watched the game shortly.
Regardless though, that's us scored 20 goals, and conceded only 2, in our last 5 games! Now, far be it for me to get overexcited way too soon, as I know we're nowhere near the finished article yet, but that's still pretty impressive form, which warrants a :clap:
Mark my words: it won't happen overnight, but big Ange is taking us places, and the journey there is going to be one hell of a ride!:D

at the moment not looking good for next weekend, but we have 2 games before that
Nah, old firm games are a totally separate entity, where form goes out the window and anything can happen (and frequently does) over 90 mins, plus as you say, there are some key games to play before then:)
Marco.
I watched the game last night, and once again Celtic were relentless, with at times breathtaking pace, power and intensity in their forward play, and where the scoreline could've easily been 9 or 10 nil.
What's almost as impressive as their forward play is their incessant pressing of the opposition, and if they lose the ball a desire to win it back instantly, which aside from ensuring that they're always on the front foot, acts as a very effective way of using attack as the best form of defence.
This effectively means that, if Celtic can successfully continue playing that way, even if their defence isn't the best (and it is getting stronger with each new signing), against all but the best teams, it will rarely be tested, as the other team won't have very much of the ball!
In that respect, Joe Hart could've sat and read a newspaper yesterday, or gone for a snooze, and asked Welsh or Starfelt to wake him up if St Mirren had threatened to get past the halfway line:D However, it won't always be like that - and it certainly won't be like that in Holland later this week or at Ibrox next Sunday, where Celtic will be getting their fair share of being pressed, and won't have near total possession, as they've mostly enjoyed recently.
As far as the sending off for St Mirren, it was as blatant a red card as you'll see, and a horrific tackle by Power, lunging into Turnbull's ankle from above, which if Turnbull hadn't seen coming, could've resulted in a serious injury. In comparison, Christie's tackle on the St Mirren player (I forget who) was nasty and badly timed, but wasn't a red card. Defo a yellow though, which bizarrely he didn't get. That was a mistake by the ref.
The St Mirren goal that was chopped off looked to have possibly been onside, but it wasn't conclusive as there weren't enough different angles of it shown to make a proper judgement, so I'll have to look at the highlights on Sportscene to judge that one better. In any case, even if the goal had been given, it almost certainly wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game, as Celtic were all over St Mirren with 11 men, and so would've only been a consolation. TBH, I think they could've played with 12 men yesterday, and the result would've been the same.
Anyway, onto our respective European adventures now, and lets hope that both Rangers and Celtic can win their 2nd leg ties and progress to the group stages of the Europa league. Next Sunday will take care of itself in due course!
Marco.
Surprised no-one's talking about another 6-0 Celtic win?;)

:ner:
Yeah, we're copying Walter Smith's and David Murray's style from the 90s!:D;)
Marco.
2-4, I see, against Ross County. You guys trying to copy our type of scorelines?:D
Anyway, a good win at a tricky away venue, and you're scoring goals again. Take care of Alashkert midweek, and you can go into the old firm game with confidence!:)
Marco.

should be at similar level to barisic i'd think. good prices still in the croatia area
Yeah, I'd agree on both counts.
However, it'll be interesting seeing how quickly Ange pitches him in. For me, on current form, it's Ralston's jersey to lose, and the manager instinctively won't want to demote him, simply to accommodate Juranovic, thus dent his confidence.
Or he could take the view that, at only 22, Ralston's had much responsibility on his shoulders recently and played a lot of games, so needs a rest. My gut says the former, but in that respect it'll be interesting who starts at Ibrox. I think Ralston's a shoe-in for the AZ game, as Ange won't risk upsetting the team's balance for such a crucial one-off match.
Marco.
well barisc took quite a time to settle; croats maybe a bit like that i dont know.
Yeah, that's also a possibility. Don't think we've had a Croatian play for us before. Trusted sources also tell me that the Greek striker, Georgios Giakoumakis, is close to signing, and if he does, I predict he'll be a sensation, much like Kyogo, although a totally different player.
He'll bang in goals though, and hopefully be as successful as Samaras was, our last Greek striker, although this Georgios is a different type of player

loads more chances go a begging but we are through. 0-0 on night; 1-0 overall. so into the groups again..(thats 4 in a row into europa league groups)

Yup, congrats to Rangers for getting the job done and through to the group stages, although once again not the best performance against 10 men. At last, Juan Alegria joins Rangers as final hurdles cleared to pave way for long awaited three year deal
The Colombian teenager has finally arrived after a long transfer chase and will initially join the Ibrox B team.
The 19-year-old has joined from Finnish side FC Honka on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Alegria has followed the same career arc as countryman Alfredo Morelos, who arrived at Ibrox from HJK Helsinki in 2017 having joined the
Finland club from his native Colombia.
However, Britain’s exit from the European Union and resultant changes in the transfer window made it difficult.
A deal had been secured for some time now but there was a significant hold-up to secure a work permit.

think 3rd in europa does same with the second the the new league so maybe an option.
So, well done to Rangers, who get first blood in the old firm derbies this season, by winning 1-0 at home... Still 'fortress Ibrox', eh?:D
I haven't watched the game yet, so no idea how things went, but I thought you'd win. The result is certainly much better than we could've hoped for 3 weeks ago... Still building a team, but we'll get there, as progress thus far under Ange has been remarkable:)
Marco.
was a usual set up in that gers ceded posession a bit, waited on the errors and celtic tiring then struck. not especially pretty but a hard faught and probably deserved 3 points. young mccrorie wasnt really tested. ch balogan played rb as patterson is now also isolating(presumeably a different contact) and got mom; i did feel we might get destroyed down left but he managed well.
Ref had a good game too

Fairly even game, Celtic had most of the possession , but that doesn’t win games

well bassey is a good backup, but will need another good player beside him to push and assist. maybe a loan this year.

yeah. think he was a bit hamstrung by forrest being crocked again.. the other lad too that plays wing.. so to get width he went that way. hindsight is a great thing but it might not have worked. eddie can be a good player but tbh although he svored a few in league last year he never really played like he can.
still its a nice break now for internationals so teams can regroup; plus the last few day of market may well be busy
looking like we keep all our stars:) only out really is cedric itten to germany on a years loan, with option. barker may go yet too but may not. its up to him. glad barisic is staying.

the greek lad, well he had a great season in holland last year, so see how he does at a bigger team but is a good age and a fairly reasonable value, although dont know what they paid. jota too, could be useful.

Yeah, I get that. What I don't understand is why Ange made a beeline to resign him, when he first arrived at the club, clearly with the view that he was in his plans, and since then has hardly kicked a ball...? I don't buy the 'he's not fit' pish either...
Something's happened outside of any fitness issues to have changed Ange's opinion of him, and which should've been explained properly to the fans, rather than us being left in the dark, guessing! There was that stuff about him chatting up an underage girl on social media, but after an investigation, he was cleared of that, so it should've had no bearing on his status as a player.
Also, can he play against Celtic, or are loan players not allowed to play against the club they belong to?
Marco.

he was cleared of illegality. but he still did it, and apparently not for first time. could be a number of other reasons really. Sponsors may be unhappy at him being linked. Club may feel he is an embarrassment. He isnt fit enough to ange's levels which is almost certainly true

Well yours certainly isn't in Europe!:ner:;)
Joking aside, the lack of goal threat in your team has been obvious since day one of pre-season, and also now since the season has started. Aside from your pumping of Dunfermline, you haven't really looked very threatening, and you can't continue winning games by the odd goal, as sooner or later that'll catch up with you.
Therefore, from your perspective, let's hope that your new signings give you more of a cutting edge going forward, and you can start racking up some 6-0s like us... My gut tells me that if Celtic are to give you a proper challenge for the title, then it could come down to who gives the other teams in the league more of a cuffing!:)

Ok, but who said he did it - and where's the proof? Surely if he did do it, and they had proof, then he wouldn't have been cleared of illegality? And if they haven't got *indisputable proof* that he did it, then surely it's filed under 'innocent until proven guilty'?
The fitness thing I can buy, but that would come in time with playing games.
Anyway, you didn't answer my question (as I don't know), is he allowed to play against Celtic?

Yes, but you were also scoring barrowloads in Europe and pumping teams in the SPL, which clearly isn't happening so far this season. You're not suggesting that, right now, Rangers are as good (in really any department) as they were last year? If so, you're about the only one who thinks that!
I clearly remember you saying how poor they were playing, up until the Celtic game, or does a narrow 1-0 in that match, which could've gone either way, paper over all the cracks? As I know all too well from our performances last year at the beginning of the season, managing to win games, but performing poorly, soon catches up with you...;)
I'm not saying that's what's going to happen to you, but the fact is you'd need to be very blind or blinkered to be a Rangers supporter now who's totally happy with how the team is playing, despite them winning.
Marco.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.
As for the latter, well if they couldn't prove anything, then he shouldn't be considered as or treated as guilty! Simples. I'm not defending him, or saying he was innocent, simply stating facts from a neutral point of view, or do we just automatically condemn people now for doing something on the strength of hearsay?

No we are not playing as well as last season, yet and hopefully that will change, Morelos and Kent have been really poor for example and of course we missed Ryan Jack . A bit surprised that Itten has gone out on loan. Looking for us to kick on big time after the International break.

Not sure about the latter, as we're still very much a work in progress, so it's likely to be something for next season. I think we've a better chance now of pushing you closer than we would've done had someone like Ange not been appointed [as you know, I rated him from day 1], and the type of players he's brought in since, but we'll see.
Hopefully, from your point of view, the goals will come, but Morelos aside, I'm unconvinced about any of your other strikers. I could be wrong, but I just don't see them scoring 20 goals or more this season, which is what you need to offer a proper threat, especially if the rest of the team aren't contributing many goals, or Morelos gets injured.

roofe got 14 last season and from fewer starts the most, so i expect when he is fully fit to get close to that... i kinda expect alegria to get a chance too later. he could turn out a good un. got 2 off bench in lowland league and just in door.

I agree with all of the former, especially you missing Jack.
As for lots of changes at Celtic, of course mate, what did you expect? We're in the process of a near-total rebuild, so how could there be too many?
In that respect, I'm not sure we've signed enough players. I'd have liked to have seen another quality/experienced central defender come in (like a Benkovic), even on loan, as until Jullien returns, we're a bit lightweight in that area. And is Greg Taylor the long-term solution at left back? I don't think so. What cover is there if he gets injured? We should've signed another left back, as cover, or better still, a superior player in that position.
Too many changes, perhaps, for all the players to gel in time to win us the league, but as I said to Grant, I think that's a somewhat unrealistic target this season anyway.
Marco.

Better second half performance
Indeed... We had much more possession and control of the game in the second half, and were unlucky not to pull a goal back. I think we did as well as we could've hoped with all the call-offs against the group favourites at their ground, and also one of the best teams in Europe.
Other teams from our group will go to Denmark and leave with more than a 2-0 defeat, and anyway, we've now got the hardest game out of the way.
However, we need to win our next game against Moldova, and indeed all of our home games, plus try and nick some points away from home against Israel and Austria, as well as beat Moldova and the Faroe Islands (home and away), to have a chance of qualifying, as I suspect it'll be between us and Austria for the runner's up spot.

Only saw some of the second half, which was too much, extremely poor finishing, plus lots of other issues.
As long as the Norwich boys (Hanley, Gilmour and Mclean) survived unscathed that's a good result for me! I didn't see it, but Gilmour looks to have been the best player for Scotland according to reports?
He has been, but not really last night, apart from a short spell in the first half. Still, a win is a win, is a win... Even though it was a BOREfest! We'll have to be much better against Austria, to leave there with anything, that's for sure.

Something like 16 attempts at goal and only one goal that’s the main issue.
The answer's very simple: we don't have an international class recognised striker! The same deficiencies were glaringly obvious at the Euros.
If Griffo can get back to form and bang in the goals for Dundee (which I predict will happen), he'll be the answer. Scotland have missed him MASSIVELY:trust:
Marco.
Scotland away to Austria tonight.
Some forced changes and 2 up front tonight I think.

Yes, that's a shame, as Israel will be a tough game. Hoping he and Gilmour will bring their performances and passion back to the PL - we need it!
Well a excellent 3 points away v Austria who are usually a decent side.
Should help with second place
Indeed... And what did I say about other teams going to Denmark and losing by more than 2 goals (which we were derided for)?;) Israel, who'd just pumped Austria at home, go there and get turned over 5-0....!
I'd a feeling we'd win tonight, and it could easily have been more, although we also have to thank Craig Gordon for pulling off a wonder save, which could've lost us two very valuable points.
Impatient fans and pundits need to give Clarke more time to implement his style of playing and tactics on the team - and let's not forget too, to LEARN how to manage at International level, which is a *totally* different ball game from managing the likes of Kilmarnock in the SPL!
Stick with Clarkey and we'll not go far wrong. I honestly think he'll lead us to the World Cup. It's just a pity we don't have more of a natural goal scorer up front, to convert all the chances we create (same applied in the Euros), as if so, this (way better than average) Scotland team would've achieved so much more.

Yeah, apparently it's for 'personal reasons', so no idea what that could be. Can't say I particularly rated the guy. Just a gut feeling, nothing concrete.
The more concerning thing for me, is Kyogo being out for about two months, after getting injured playing for Japan!
He'll defo be missed... However, it's possibly a chance, at long last, for Ajeti to show if he's got what it takes, if Ange wants to play with two strikers, with him and Giorgios.
Marco.
Surprised, guys, no-one's discussing the footy!
A good, but hard-fought for 1-2 win away to Ross county, for you guys, which (perhaps temporarily) puts you top of the table, until the Edinburgh derby tomorrow, although I gather it was another disappointing and somewhat unconvincing performance - wonder goal by Tav, aside...
How much longer, I wonder, will Rangers continue to win with a poor performance? Some may say that 'grinding out' such results is the sign of champions, and there's some truth in that, but for me if you don't start putting teams away more convincingly, it'll come back to bite you on the bum. Plus, I hear that Helander, a key player for you, has picked up a bad injury?
Disappointing, but join the club with us and Kyogo!
Still, we (eventually) managed to beat Ross County 3-0 at home. I think both Rangers and Celtic will be very strong at home this season and lose few points. The real tests will come away from home.
Defensively, we're starting to look MUCH more solid now, with the arrivals of Hart, Starfelt (who's improving with every game) Juranovic, and now Carter-Vickers, who looks like the 'real deal', in terms of what a strong and commanding centre half is like, and something we've been missing for ages. He scored the crucial first goal today and won man of the match!:)
Jota, was apparently superb too, so that's potentially exciting going forward. However, the best (and I suspect most significant) thing today was Ajeti's performance, playing up front in the absence of Kyogo. There's no doubt we're going to miss the latter's craft and creativity, while he's put injured, but with Ajeti scoring twice, on his first start for the team, it'll give him some much needed confidence, plus most importantly, show Ange that he can rely on him, much more than was the case a few weeks back.
I've always said that Ajeti would be a good player, given time, and he certainly hasn't had much game time, so now's his chance to prove it - and I predict he will. Plus, we've still got Giorgios to come in, so for now it's all good!
Marco.

Wasn’t a great game , but the win was never in doubt even though St Johnstone scored first, thought the referee was poor, not great that Helander was injured near the end.
Yup, make no mistake St Johnstone at home won't be pushovers for anyone this season. They have some good players, especially O'Halloran. even though they sold a couple during the transfer window.
That said, last season you'd probably have won that game more convincingly, but as others and I have pointed out before, you're defo lacking a cutting edge up front, and, in certain games/against a certain type of opposition, unless you address that issue, it could result in dropped points.
We're far from perfect just now either, and defo a work in progress, so it'll be interesting seeing how both teams develop throughout the course of the season:)

Yeah we had all the procession in the first half as well, but not much happening with the front three.
Indeed, and that's where the cutting edge is needed. You can't rely on Tav scoring a wonder goal every week to win you games...
In other news, I note that Edouard came off the bench late on and scored a brace for Palace, the first one the fastest ever recorded for a debutant. Seemed quite focussed and suffering from no obvious effects of long Covid;)
I think he'll do well down there, and predict he'll score well into double figures.
Marco.
Any thoughts on yesterday's games, Granty? You're surprisingly quiet!:)
Marco.
wasnt following them much tbh. i see we look to have lost hellander, and have goldson in house sheltering.. Still 2-1 away to a current bogey club is good, but the front guys need to find their shooting boots.
edinburgh derby today.

yeah, leon king will likely play if needed. Should be able to push simpson in as an emergency change too.
gers b team has continued their great form so far and are now 1 point off top and have 2 games in hand after defeating the current leaders of the lowland league 5-2.
this has helped the lads a lot as they are mostly young for a b team.
Celtic b doing well too and are 6th but with 3 games in hand on leaders bonnyrigg rose.
Any thoughts on tonight's games, chaps? With Helander out, will Goldson make it? Are you looking forward to Jason Denyer and Dembele coming back to Ibrox with Lyon?;)
We've also got injuries and, would you believe it, absences due to religious festivals (Abada not playing because of Yom Kippur)...
I think both of us will be very lucky to get anything from tonight's games, as Betis are also quality (especially at home) and managed by the rather astute ex-Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini...
I think, being at home, you guys have the better chance, but with injuries to key players it'll be difficult. Fingers crossed though, and best of luck!

Indeed... Didn't know Dembele was out. Is he injured? As I said, if we could both secure a point, I think it would be a great result.
Had to laugh at this comment from Ange on Twitter:
Ange Postecoglou on the fact that Celtic were in Pot 2 of the Europa League and Real Betis were in Pot 3: "Mate, I stay out of the kitchen so pots aren’t my forte."
 He's great value, both on and off the field!

I don't think we've any chance of winning in Seville, with not only Furuhashi out, but McGregor, who will be a HUGE miss, plus Taylor and Abada. You don't win away games in Europe without four of your best players. Best we can hope for I think is a point, and even that is being optimistic.
It's so annoying when these games come round and you can't field a proper full strength side. Had the above players been available to play, I'd have fancied us to give Betis a really good game.
And if you guys were to beat Lyon, that would arguably be your best win under Gerrard.
Marco.

we beat them in a friendly recently, but that doesnt count:lol:

Shame, as I'd loved to have seen what level he was at now.

ooops.. sorry betis... 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss.. got the teams mixed up as they are in same city. They did beat leeds and roma tho.

Marco’s probably having a wee rest after the first half
Lol - it was an incredible first half! Couldn't believe what I was seeing and that we were 0-2 up, and then nearly made it 3! That's what Ajeti is capable of though, given a sustained run in the team - scores one and wins a penalty. That's three goals now in two starts. Makes you wonder why he wasn't given a proper chance before, especially last season under Lennon. In my view, he should've been playing instead of Edouard, especially this season, who rarely got out of 3rd gear!
Juranovic, who looks like a real quality player, and so unflustered, stuck the penalty away with considerable aplomb. It's clear though that Ajeti can now be relied upon to score goals, and he'll only get better with more game time. That'll certainly give Ange, and the team, a big boost. Jota was also superb, and set up the first goal with a great cross for Ajeti. I think he's set to be a real fan's favourite, much like Kyogo.
However, our defensive frailties raised their head again, exacerbated by the injuries/absences to key players, and we lost two poor goals before the end of the first half, then another two into the second half., with mainly some mix ups in central defence. Hart was blameless for all four goals, and indeed had two great saves, so it could've been worse. Starfelt's beginning to look more solid and assured now though, with Juranovic and Carter-Vickers alongside him, so that augurs well going forward, but we're still missing Jullien.
When we went 4-2 down though, we still continued to plug away, and Betis sat back a bit, trying to defend their lead, and we were eventually awarded with a third goal, scored by Ralston, who really has turned into a player this season, especially with his goals, all of which have been crucial. The Celtic players showed remarkable levels of fitness, in terms of how they managed to stay in the game and press Betis, especially in the heat of a warm night in Seville.
I didn't think we'd get anything out of the game, given the quality of the opposition and a depleted team, but I certainly didn't expect that type of performance, where we really took the game to the opposition, especially in the first half, and some of our forward play, once again, was superb. There's no doubt for me that if we'd had a full strength team, we'd not have lost that game, and could've easily won it!
I certainly can't think of another occasion, in recent times, when a Celtic team has gone to Spain and scored three goals. It was a magnificent effort. On that display, and those in the previous qualifying rounds, I can comfortably predict that this Celtic team will be capable of going away from home and scoring against anyone, It's just the other end where we need to improve, and if we can, we'll truly be formidable.
Sadly though, I was right that neither Celtic or Rangers got anything from their games tonight, with you guys going down 0-2 to Lyon. I watched most of the game, and you were pretty much outclassed, despite doing plenty of huffing and puffing. Too many players this season aren't playing to anywhere near the same level as last season, which is a problem, as is the much discussed lack of cutting edge up front, which has bit you on the bum in this game and will do so in other games until the issue is sorted.
Morelos just doesn't look like the same player he was last season, Kent's under-performing, so is Aribo and Davis - for me the whole team is lacking a spark. You've got away with it so far in the SPL, and done just enough to win most games, but you won't get away with it in Europe. Still, there are another 5 games to go in the Europa League, so anything can still happen, but both Rangers and Celtic will have to notably improve if they've got any chance of progressing beyond the group stages this season.
Marco.

Only saw a few minutes of the Celtic game, so cant really comment on the game, although from what I watched Soro looked like a headless chicken.
As for Rangers, no change , nowhere near good enough, way down on last season’s form still. The first goal which was great strike could have been prevented, and the second goal , words fail me. We had chances and in Europe you have to take them.
WE are struggling not sure why, none of the news signings are starting games and the same can be said about the young lads , The young boy Kelly had a great pre season but has disappeared- is it Covid?
Hopefully things will improve soon, or this good be a long season.
funny i said yesterday to someone it could be a long season:doh:
slept through it all so happy i did now.
celtic did well scoring 3 goals at least..

Lol, I agree. He kept lunging into challenges, got booked, and was looking like he was going to be sent off! McCarthy is the man for that position, and will become so shortly when he's fully up to speed.
Surprised that's all you noticed though from the Celtic performance, which going forward was very impressive. I also thought that, like me with Rangers, you watched the Celtic games in Europe? I do because I genuinely support Rangers in those games, so for me that makes them worth watching!:)
There's defo a malaise about Rangers just now with a lot of players not at, or even near, the top of the game. Doubtless you'll beat Motherwell at home on Sunday, when we have a potentially difficult trip away to Livi, but that would only paper over the cracks. At some point these bad performances will catch up with you.
What's Defoe doing these says - is he still registered as a player? I know he's getting on a bit, but he always guarantees you goals, so I'd be getting him match fit and playing him instead of Morelos, who's just not at the races (although he tries hard), or possibly trying to form a partnership with Defoe and Roofe. Maybe that could work? And what's happened to Hagi?
Marco.

Yeah, we badly missed McGregor, for his ability to hold onto the ball and pass it with accuracy. No way would we have lost 4 goals had he been in the team, and also Taylor. Montgomery done well for a kid, but at times was ruthlessly exposed.
As I've said, you can't go into games at that level with a depleted side, playing kids, and expect to win. However, we gave it a damn good go!:)

I do usually watch the Celtic games in Europe, but we were on grandparent duties and our grandson is not a Celtic fan, although Soro was doing a good impression of Shrek which we were watching.
Hagi is just back from a Covid positive test, so probably not fit enough yet. Defoe is still registered as a player, I think Scott Wright should be given more playing time. The main problem has not changed there is no plan B.

I don't really rate Wright, but I haven't seen enough of him to judge him conclusively. At the moment, I'd defo be looking at Defoe. How many goals did he score last time Morelos was out? Think it was the season before last. Quite a few, if I recall correctly.
I also think Hagi gives you something other players currently starting don't, and I'd be giving Sakala more game time.

Quote [Chris Sutton]: "When I was at Ibrox for the Premier Sports Cup last season I was made aware through production staff I wasn’t welcome there. There were no fans in the ground so it wasn’t a security concern then. It’s about not wanting any kind of dissenting voice around the place.
What is this, North Korea? It’s totalitarian stuff. It’s our job as pundits to be critical. We have to call it as we see it and not sugarcoat things. Myself and Ally McCoist debate the big issues every single week, we both wind each other up and have a laugh about it. It’s good-natured banter and sometimes we’ll have a tongue-in-cheek dig at each other’s clubs. But it’s all good fun. That’s the way it should be.
When there are times to talk about serious issues we can do that as well. But you can’t have clubs trying to gag people who simply have an opinion they don’t like or played for clubs they don’t like.
Where does it end? Will Hearts refuse to let pundits in to Tynecastle who played for Hibs? In Dundee this weekend, will former Dens Park players be told to stay away from Tannadice?
There will be no one left to talk up the game. I just don’t know where Rangers are going right now as they seem to be going down a dark path."

I'm afraid I can't disagree with any of that. Why have Lennon and Sutton been banned from Ibrox?:hmm:

Yes saw that on Thursday, they were doing the same thing last season when the two teams were playing at different times. I’m not sure what the official is though I doubt either of them have been banned. I’m sure it will be sorted out, but saying that the BBC have been banned for a good few year now.
whether it matters or not, rod stewart agrees with rangers. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/rod-stewart-backs-rangers-celtic-25010577
i have to say its odd on both sides. why would 2 celtic guys want to go to ibrox to talk about celtic with a full house of rabid rangers fans present?
not on anyones side but sutton is an argumentive prick and he is better not there. it would have started a lot of nasty singing no doubt too which could easily be avoided, and may have been reason; its a euro game being beamed around globe. no-one wants any bans etc
whether it matters or not, rod stewart agrees with rangers. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/rod-stewart-backs-rangers-celtic-25010577
Mmm... I'm afraid I disagree with Rod. I'm dead against anyone being gagged. It's not about getting a 'warm welcome' (fat chance), but that's cool and what I'd expect, but rather what would give the commentary an 'edge' and make good viewing for the public watching at home!
Personally, I'm not after nicey-nicey, 'we're all pals and agree with each other' type of commentary. I like outspoken people with strong opinions, and who aren't afraid of telling it as they see it, no matter WHO it upsets - and yes Sutton comes into that category. So there shouldn't have been any such ban, and the Ibrox faithful would just have to behave and be mature enough to take it.
I'd say EXACTLY the same about someone such as Walter Smith or Terry Butcher doing the same thing at Celtic Park, in front of similarly rabid Celtic fans. Suck it up and like it!! When it comes to TV, you have to rise above your leanings/biases and do what's best to maximise the entertainment factor.
That's my view:)
Marco.
its a game of opinions:D deary me did i say that? think sutton and hartson are the 2 most disliked so its up to the club i guess.
none of my business tbh. im not a shareholder nor a payer of moneys to club etc so i guess i dont have a say.
most fans i am betting will agree with them; not to say they are right but you know what im saying. Think its to do with constant gutter press over last 10 years. i think overall its probably not productive but as i say///
What teams allow their bitter rivals to broadcast from their stadia anyway???
Of course you have a say - you're a sentient human being and a long-term Rangers supporter. I'm the same on the Celtic side. You don't have to be a shareholder or season ticket holder to be entitled to an opinion!
And my opinion is, it sucks. Plus, if you're a Rangers or Celtic fan who can't hack an ex-footballer from the team you don't support saying something negative about your team, then man the fuck up and learn to take criticism, justified or otherwise, with good grace!!! Wankas...
:exactly:
Marco.
you are entitled to your opinion mate. all i could think would be the minority of fans would have started abuse and that would get club in trouble.
Now imo the minority all need banned(i believe its a weakness not to) but as i say im not anything to do with the rangers machine.
Any 'fans', on both sides of the divide, who can't manage to behave themselves simply because an ex-footballer from 'the other side' dares to criticise their team, from the commentary box or studio, needs a swift boot in the baws and told to GROW the FUCK UP!
That's my opinion, mate!;)
And while we're at it, when will all this Orange walk pish be outlawed? It's outdated and old hat, and 90% of the idiots marching don't have a clue what it stands for or the history, It's just an excuse to get pished, and cause trouble and traffic chaos.
Another opinion, lol!
Oh, and I'd say the same if there was a catholic/Celtic equivalent.
Marco.

yup, ive been saying for years both the orange and republican marches should be banned. no need for them in 21st century. Its like the kkk allowed to spit their bile through the streets every year.

Yeah hopefully a win tomorrow
Yeah hopefully a win tomorrow
will be a hard game with, again, players missing and against a good side. we have a good home record and decent record v well too tho.

Totally agreed. Not seen any republican marches though in my time in Glasgow (maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, lol). In our town (Thornliebank), which was mainly full protestants/Rangers supporters, it was always the Orange walk.
It brought a lot of customers into my dad's chippies though, so there was a plus side to their bigoted pish;)
Marco.
Another very poor Norwich result, not sure about the performance as didn’t watch it but now 5 losses to start this season and 15 consecutive Premier League losses on the bounce (worst run on record) doesn’t bode well... I expect they will be calling for the manager’s head, not sure that will make much difference.
utd win and are top of epl with liverpool.
gers had umpteen chances to win that game but a draw it is; still they go top.. alas for celtic, they struggled away to livy and lost 1-0. both glasgow teams have injury issues but from both thats not good enough.

Rangers need to stop trying for the perfect goal, its not a new thing was happening last season as well, big difference they 50,000 fans moaning at them now, the game should have been out of sight by half time. Anyway top of the table could worse,

yup and need to be playing top game for 90 mins. not half a game. we have a stronger squad than celtic so can handle injuries and 3 gamea a week better, but giving points away isnt going to win leagues.

Shite is the only word for it, lol! Bogey-ground plastic pitch pish.. I'll comment properly later. However, I did say don't expect us to be the real deal until at least Xmas - seems that's going to be the case!

Worst start in 23 years
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58617548
We need to sort out our final third play, should have been 4 up by half time yesterday, trying to walk the ball in the net all the time is not the way to score goals.

too many players think they are better than they are. also a few are i think, disappointed not to have got a move and hence not playing well. not saying its deliberate, but it is psycological.

You might be right Grant, but Kent didn’t play and Morelos only played the 20 minutes or so yesterday, far too many passes around the 18 yard box.
goldy, barisic, kamara.. davo is being overused although he played well yesterday. wright, roofe and sakala dont play enough. aribo was at best. tav too hasnt played particularly well either. A number of injuries, like patterson, Jack(long term) and big Phil... Simpson hasnt had a lot of matches but he already looks unsuited to Scottish game. Not sure shagger is now our best keeper either now.

Simpson didn’t look lol that comfortable, not worried about the goalie, both are decent, Davis bossed the first half but started to tire, none of the recent signings look like starters in the team so far.
No mention of the cup games and results, chaps?:)
Both of us through to the semis now, with you guys beating Livi at home 2-0, and us Raith Rovers, 3-0 last night at home. Interesting draws too for the semis at Hampden. You've got Hibs and we've got the holders, St Johnstone.
We're *SO* missing our captain, McGregor, and Furuhashi, which are two main reasons why our recent results (last night aside, against lower-league opposition) have been poor. And now our new Greek striker picked up a calf knock last night during the warm up! Ange certainly doesn't have his troubles to seek!
I was of course very disappointed with the Livi result last weekend, but plenty of other Celtic managers, including the great Brendan Rodgers, have struggled to win there, so hardly anything new - and this time it was with a team that's being rebuilt under a new manager, with numerous key players out...
So. realistically, what do the fans expect? Aside from anything else, Ange hasn't been able to field a settled defence since he arrived, and that, coupled with new players still settling in, is bound to bite you on the bum sometimes, in terms of losing goals, a lack of spark, and poor play,
Therefore, the fans calling for his head *this early* need a reality check and a swift boot in the baws!
He's done just about as well as he possibly could so far under the circumstances: got the team into the group stages of the Europa League, playing superbly well going forward against a very good Spanish team at their ground, scoring 3 goals and nearly beating them (all with key players out injured), including now getting the team into the semi-finals of the League Cup, and it's WAY too early in the league to start talking about winning or losing titles, especially when Rangers aren't on top form either.
Look at the three away games Celtic have lost so far: to Hearts, narrowly, in Ange's very first game in charge, playing mostly with kids and a non-goalkeeper. Given the form of Hearts currently, Celtic won't be the only team to drop points there, then to Rangers, in a tight game we could've won instead, and lastly narrowly again, at our historically bogey ground of Livingston, on a pitch that simply isn't conducive to playing good football.
So ALL of that needs taken into consideration. It's not as if we're going to grounds and getting pumped by teams we'd normally easily beat, and at home so far we've been excellent, scoring a barrowload of goals and conceding few. Therefore, some Celtic fans and pundits need to cut out the knee-jerk reactions and analyse things calmly and logically, taking everything that's relevant properly into consideration, and so all things considered, Ange is doing well - but he needs time!
Anyone with even half a brain can see what he's trying to do, and so he needs time to do it. When it clicks, the team are a joy to watch, and there'll be plenty more of that ahead once injured key players return and new players gel and settle in.
This isn't a quick fix or a short-term project, and it's not as if he hasn't had success so far under VERY difficult circumstances. As I've repeatedly said, don't expect to see the 'real' Celtic until Xmas, and by the looks of things that may also apply to Rangers, and with it the league table looking rather different after the winter break, once both teams have had all their best players back.
Yes, Hibs and Hearts are currently going great guns, and well done to them, but it's a marathon, not a sprint, and when they start getting injuries to some of their key players, that's when their form will start to slump. They simply can't maintain their current winning form for the duration of the season.
From Celtic's point of view, aside from McGregor, who'll be back sooner rather than later, players such as Furuhashi and Jullien, when they return from injury and get match fit, will make a BIG difference to the team and its ability, not only to break down tight defences at tricky away grounds, but also concede soft goals, which lead to dropped points - and once that happens and we can field a settled defence, week in, week out, consistency with results will come and so will the subsequent rewards!
Marco.
think celtic's start to season has probably been better than expected. ours probably worse for most although i thought this might happen.. a long way to go

Indeed so, and that's the view of anyone, without a biased agenda, and with more than two functioning neurones! It's testament to how good a manager Ange is, that the team is doing better than expected.
Undoubtedly the form of Rangers now is much poorer than expected. Quite simply, your results so far domestically, and in Europe, are incomparable with last season.
However, as I said, I think both halves of the old firm will markedly improve, and the league table will have a different look after the winter break, or hopefully sooner, for both of us!:)
Marco.
What are you saying to it all then, Robin?:)
Marco.
