In terms of the bit in bold, so do I, but unfortunately others don't. However, as for the latter, it's not racism; it's prejudice, and simply arguable whether it's justified or not. Rightly or wrongly. I'm afraid it's human nature to judge people as you've found them, as well as FIND them;)

If you're referring to the UK, I think you mean BRITISH, or are the Scottish, Welsh or Irish somehow lacking in such hospitality?

Marco.

No, I meant ENGLISH - the Scottish Welsh and Irish are the ones who are bloody hard work! Only kidding, I do mean British - just a slip of the keyboard :)

Right this lot is starting to depress me, so please resume the football chat (never EVER thought I would be saying that) :D

I'm well.
Thanks for asking.

Good stuff, as we haven't chatted for a while:)

As far as that game goes, seeing as how you speak for Wales and Scotland, the BBC should become the EBC, and stop giving transmitter feeds outside of England.
Your national stations WBC and SBC could put on coverage of Eistedffods, and Highland games.

Well, some might say that would be better than watching Scotland!:D

And how very dare you omit the sheep trials:lol:

Of course both areas would be relieved of the need to pay a license fee to the EBC, and as terrestrial TV in England would have to be accessed by encrypted broadcast feeds, you wouldn't have to pay a penny, unless you actually want to watch stuff, where it will be made perfectly clear that it's broadcast by the EBC, and if you have anything to complain about with the service then remember that it's broadcast by the EBC, not the WBC or the SBC.

Lol - yes, erm, well... Why not just simplify it and implement the perfectly logical and fair suggestion I made earlier, of diluting the English punditry and commentary presence, during England games, by bringing in a few Scots, Welsh or Irish pundits or co-commentators instead? You know, make the vibe more BRITISH than English? It's a crazy thought, I know!:eyebrows:

It's not as if the likes of Graeme Souness, Roy Keane, Ally McCoist or John Collins couldn't ably fill the boots of some of their English counterparts and make the programme as interesting to watch. At a push, I'd even take Joan Collins!

I don't see a downside, other than, as I've said, spoiled England fans for a change not getting things ALL their own way!:ner:;)

Marco.

It's far easier to just remove the stuff you find so offensive, and technically possible.
Cut off the TV feeds to Wales and Scotland.
Then you can please yourselves.
If you want to watch EBC there's no bleating.

The Irish don't bleat on about perceived upset over BBC free to air TV (that they can and do pick up).

Soz, I don't understand how I would be able to watch full televised coverage of the Euros or World Cup that way?

You'll have to explain it in easily understood baby steps, as I'm not technical.

All I want is EXACTLY the same televised coverage as I get now, minus the irritating pro-England bias. Anything else is too much like hard work (for me) and unacceptable.

Plus what about all the other, non-football, output I enjoy from the BBC and ITV - how would I view that?

Did I not mention unplugging the centre channel on your surround sound? You'd still get the crowd noise, but the commentator bollox would be all but gone :) Easy peasy

Anyway the important stuff (to me) is all happening tonight, and I'll be watching TWO matches - that's never happened before. My sweepstake team (Czech Republic) has already made me £20, but if they win tonight I get another forty...

Lol, absolutely mate, but you're still missing the point... I like the 'commentator bollox' when it's blissfully free from OTT England fanboy chatter:D

Notice that I've only mentioned this and complained about it **since the Germany game**. I said nothing about it before that, simply because it wasn't an issue, even during the Scotland game, apart from some ridiculous pre-match predictions from ex-England players!

The 'OTT' bit above is significant, because it's only a problem when it's over the top, as it was after you beat Germany, and now is getting worse by the day (the TV's full of England hysteria now, as the media hype-machine has gone into overdrive), not when it's at a much lower, perfectly natural and much less annoying level:)

It's all this 'we'/'us'/'our team' business, and the presumption that the whole nation are England supporters, that gets the goat of 'us' who aren't, so what I really need is a bullshit filter, which removes England fanboy hysteria from my TV and leaves the rest intact (probably be a short programme now, though), so I can just have the type of coverage I enjoyed before all this pish started!:ner:

Good luck on that one. I have no dog in that race, although from the Eriksen POV, I'd probably side with Denmark, plus I prefer their style of football.

Sensible lad. I've never betted against any of my teams, mainly because I'm not a betting man, but it would simply go against the grain, unless their was a potentially *significant* sum of cash involved, as I'm just not driven by money.

In that respect, it would probably take a potential 5-figure sum for me to bet against Scotland, and akin to a potential Lottery win, to tempt me to bet against my beloved Celtic!:)

Macca
03-07-2021, 10:55
well I only bet £40, just a bit of fun. If I was betting seriously it would be a monkey, and I probably wouldn't bet seriously on the Euros at all as it's too random. The nature of international football means studying form is very difficult.

Gambling can either be a bit of fun or a science. It's the people who bet big without a clue what they are doing who give it a bad name.

Marco
03-07-2021, 11:26
Nothing wrong with gambling, as long as you know your limits and it doesn't become an addiction!

That last bit is the problem, like any other addiction, and knowing when to walk away, either when you've won 'big enough', or lost at level that's truly affordable.

I've got a mate who likes betting on horse racing, and attends the races, simply for a day out with other likeminded friends, and what they do is take a sum of surplus cash that they're happy to lose [that's the right mindset to have, IMO, rather than viewing the same as a means to win, unless you're a professional], and when it's gone, or they've won 'enough', they go home!

As long as you can control gambling in that way, where it serves YOU, rather than you serving IT, then as far as I'm concerned, fill you boots!

Quite simply, one shouldn't be addicted to *anything* but GOOD HEALTH and HAPPINESS:)

The General consensus tonight is that England will beat Ukraine in Rome.

I thought 3-0. My mate Danny thinks it will be closer. Maybe 2-1.

Time will tell. IMO, it's still boiling up to The Three Lions versus the Azzurri in the Final.

Roberto Mancini in a fine Italian suit. Gareth Southgate wearing a good suit too. A Battle of style.

IMO, Gareth should get a shave too. Then it's even-stephens.

If England beat Ukraine tonight, then I think they'll have their work cut out against the Danes in the semis!

From 13th June...

As for England, don't underestimate how much of an advantage playing at home is, even only in front of 25,000 fans, so they have that going for them, but most importantly, IMO, the best all-round team they've taken to a major tournament in years. They're a bit like Italy, in that respect: better/more together for not having any outright superstars, and in Southgate a manager ideally suited to the role.

He's his own man (cares not a jot what the media say), never gets flustered and always comes across as focused and professional, plus a genuinely nice guy. All of those things, for me, give England a fighting chance of going all the way - but of course there's a LONG way to go!

;)

What are the main things that England and Italy have in common in this tournament:

1) Defensively solid and with a significant goal threat up front.

2) A genuine togetherness and great camaraderie in their squad.

3) A fantastic manager, who's 'on a journey' with his team, and getting better all the time!

And that, gentlemen, is why I believe that the final of this tournament will be contested by both of these teams.

Apart from the last time the two teams met, under a year ago at Wembley:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54363934

Not saying that's going to happen again, but you do have a habit of blurting out rather unsubstantiated definitive statements about football, and viewing things with your 3-lions blinkers on..

Remember it's a knockout competition now, so the BEST team on the night is the one who will win, not necessarily the best team overall. Then add in the Eriksen factor, which I believe has helped carry Denmark into this position in the first place, and will prove significant.

I'm not making my prediction for tonight's match yet, as I need to mull it over more first.

As for last night's game, Spain were undoubtedly the better team, as in had much more possession and so controlled the game/played it to their style and tempo, and which definitely upset the rhythm of the Italians. Rather importantly though, Italy badly missed the creativity, down the flanks, of Spinazzola!

However, that's what Spain do, pass teams to death, often without an end product, which is why they have won only ONE game decisively in 90 mins throughout this whole tournament, and which is why, aside from obviously being a passionate Italy fan, I was praying that Italy would win, because if Spain had got to the final, they'd have inflicted the same style of play on whatever opposition they faced! And I want to see and open/attacking and exciting game of football in the final.

Now don't get me wrong, Spain are clearly a talented side, with unbelievable technical ability, but in order to be a truly great team and one who will win tournaments again, they need to have more cutting edge up front, and most importantly, find a clinical penalty-box finisher/goal scorer, to add an end product to their outstanding build-up play. Personally, I admire them more than am excited by them, as I prefer teams who play a different style of football.

It's a bit like in tennis... You cannot help but admire Federer, who will rightly go on to become the greatest tennis player of all time, but he's about as exciting as a wall painted magnolia. Give me a McEnroe, or a Murray any day! And I feel the same about football. I watch it first and foremost to be entertained/see loads of goals scored, not simply admire a team's technical skills.. However, that's not to take away anything from how well Spain played last night, as they were much more on the front foot than usual.

Essentially though, the difference last night between the two teams was that they were both defensively solid, and when in possession could keep the ball (albeit Spain were much better at that than Italy), but despite that, it was Italy who always looked the likelier to score first on the break, and so it proved with another wonder goal by Chiesa, who for me has arguably been the best striker in the tournament, and will again be significant in the final.

In contrast, Morata and Oyarzabal squander too many chances, and indeed have done throughout this tournament, which is largely been the reason why Spain, despite dominating teams, have failed to kill them off. In that respect, I had a feeling that their 5-0 drubbing of Slovakia was likely to be a one-off, and so it proved.

Therefore, in summary, in my view, Spain are a clinical goalscorer (or two) away from being a great team, which they'd be if they had a Chiesa or a Kane in their ranks, and so until they discover one, or Morata finds his scoring boots more regularly, they'll struggle to win major tournaments such as this.

Indeed, and it's precisely that shite that makes us neutrals, although we have nothing whatsoever against the England manager or players (far from it), want England to fall on their arses, simply because the hysteria is bad enough now [and they're still chuntering on about 1966], so *just imagine* what it'd be like if they won this tournament!!

You'd never hear the bloody end of it, EVER, and that's what both neutrals and England haters alike dread, and why so many at home and abroad are anti England winning trophies in ANY major sport.

Marco.

If Spain had an out and out striker they would have won that match easily last night, Morata is not a goal scorer , he is a forward that will chip in with a few goals, the best pundit during the Euros has been Souness by a mile and he highlight this several games ago. Morata had already missed a pen in the earlier games but fairly play to him for stepping up to take one.
As for tonight , will be interesting to see the team line ups, will England go with 7 defensive players again, or will he risk a more attacking line up?

Agree about Souness. We need him in the commentary box for the remaining England game(s), as he'd soon 'tober' [good Scottish word] the rather excitable, jingoistic Englanders accompanying him!:D

:exactly:

Did you hear Rio Ferdinand last night going on about how "confident" he was that England would win, not only tonight, but in the final itself, if they get there, as they're undoubtedly the better team, between them, Denmark and Italy?

Yes, that's better than the Italy, who've not only won this tournament before, but FOUR World Cups, only one fewer than Brazil! Whereas England have won hee-haw, other than one World Cup 55 years ago, which of course we never cease to be reminded of...

He's such a dimwitted, overbearing arse, and also the same man who was equally "so confident" England would thrash Scotland 4-0!

Anyway, as for Spain and their lack of a decent striker or goalscorer; exactly, and precisely why I wrote what I did.

As for tonight , will be interesting to see the team line ups, will England go with 7 defensive players again, or will he risk a more attacking line up?

Well, the "7 defensive players" didn't stop them scoring 4 goals against Ukraine... Therefore, I'd expect them to go with a similar line-up, although with perhaps this time the inclusion of Grealish, or possibly Foden.

Anyway... Onto tonight's game, and in terms of a prediction, I must've changed my mind about 20 times throughout the day, but I've settled on a narrow England win, within normal time, something like a 1-0 or 2-1.

*However*, I would not at all be surprised if Denmark won, as one thing's for sure, they'll make it very difficult indeed tonight for England and want to do it for their teammate Christian.

They're also the type of team, very physical who play a high press and make defences work, like to shoot on sight, and who are dangerous with corners and free kicks, who could make it difficult for this England side.

Personally though, I hope England win, so we (as in Italy) can pump you royally in the final, and send you 'coming home' this time without even so much as a carrier bag full of duty free gifts!:D:ner:;)

I'm not saying that won't happen, but why would a team who so far have lost no more than one goal in a game suddenly lose three? Also, Belgium, the No1 seeded team in the world only beat Denmark 2-1 in the group stage, a team arguably better than England.

I mean, despite all your super-talented players, did you even succeed in 'outclassing' Scotland?;)

Possibly, but I think when you're a team like Italy and in the final of a major tournament, you'll be confident enough of beating anyone/won't be unduly worried who you'll face, and might actually fancy the opportunity of beating England, which would attract more kudos, than doing the same to Denmark.

Marco.

The Scotland game was a long time back now, England have clearly gelled far more as a team since then, there's really no way we should lose to Denmark. Italy a different matter.

I think you could ask every Italian player who they would prefer to face in the final, I'd bet any money none of them would say England. This is professional football, being part of a team that wins a major tournament increases your value as a player.

Marco
07-07-2021, 18:55
I agree with your point on England gelling as a team, but you could also say the same for Denmark, who until game 3 of this tournament had NO points...

However, I can also tell you, as I study football in more detail than you and know the Italian mentality, that the Italian players will be far more concerned about what THEY are going to do to whatever opponents they face, than what their opponents will potentially be doing to them:)

They had a couple of spells in the first half but after that they hardly saw the ball. Dirty team as well, lots of cynical fouling anytime we had a break on. I thought after 20 minutes that we had to end up with a penalty or one of theirs being sent off. Or both.

Marco

Not what I saw, or I suspect others without their 3-Lions tinted specs on!:ner:

Yes, over the 90 mins, plus extra time, England had the bulk of possession and retained the ball better, but Denmark were always a threat going forward in both halves of the match, especially at corners and set pieces, including the 'spell' when they were 1-0 up, having just scored a wonderful free kick, and had chances afterwards to double their lead!

In any case, my point was that they weren't outclassed by England, in the manner of Ukraine, which is what you were predicting, akin to a 2, 3-0 or more victory.

That simply didn't happen and England were made to work hard to reach the final, ultimately winning last night's game by being awarded a soft penalty, which was poorly taken and missed by Kane, after being stopped by Schmeichel. However, to Kane's and England's good fortune, the ball subsequently rebounded in front of him, to enable him to score - and you need luck as well as skill to win tournaments.

That's the reality, mate, minus the blinkers!:D

Anyway, well done to the England manager and his players, who I'm pleased for [and all here who support England I consider as friends] , but that's all, as I have to be honest. However, even if England were to lose the final on Sunday, I hope that Southgate will have done enough now to convince his critics that his team and him *are* the REAL deal, and going places. He's now got England to their first major final since, erm, that thing happened in 1966...;)

I also feel exactly the same about Italy and their manager, in terms of them being the 'real deal', and which is why both these teams are contesting the final.

Earlier in this thread I made the point that both have been rebuilt and are on a 'journey' to win something soon. Italy are still smarting from not even having qualified for the last World Cup (to them an utter disgrace) and haven't won this tournament since 1968, but were runner's up in both 2000 and 2012, so for a team of their international stature are desperate to make up for that by winning this one, and of course England have never won it,

Therefore, which team will be the first to crown their 'journey' with success? We'll find out on Sunday, but I'll make the prediction now that the runner's up will go onto win the forthcoming World Cup. You heard it here first!:)

Uefa has charged England after a laser pointer was directed at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final.

Television pictures showed a green light on Schmeichel's face just before Harry Kane took an extra-time penalty.

Schmeichel saved the spot-kick, but Kane scored the rebound as England won 2-1 at Wembley to reach the final.

I am happy too Marco!

Italy were way better than England tonight.

Paced themselves better than us.

But that tournament was a whole heap of fun. We finally beat the Germans again.

England will come back better and stronger in Qatar. We could learn some Italian Pacing and controlled Dirtiness.

My fiends remain impressed with my cold-hearted betting accumen. We are in the money due to a bet on Italy! £200! Shared, of course. :D

I don't know about way better - certainly not in the first 30 mins or so, when I thought England were all over us, after having scored a wonder first goal. However after the break, Italy came out of the traps determined to get back into the game, and Mancini made some key substitutions, which proved to be pivotal in Italy equalising and controlling the remainder of the game, including extra time.

I got this right though, as indeed my predictions have often been throughout this tournament:

I'm not making any definitive predictions on this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went right to the wire - and by that I mean PENALTIES!:D

... after which of course anything can happen, and did!

More on that tomorrow, though, as I'm off to me scratcher. However, enjoy your winnings. At least Macca will be able console himself by doing the same. Think he's up £140?

Anyway, my condolences to all decent England fans here and throughout the rest of the country, which doesn't include the scumbags who were responsible for creating the disgraceful scenes we saw earlier, and who knows what state they'll leave the place in now, or what trouble they'll cause, after suffering such a cruel defeat. In that respect, let's see what we wake up to in the morning...

However, as I said, BOTH of these teams are on a journey, and I can *assure* you that England's is far from over yet, and so will be there or thereabouts at next year's World Cup - MARK MY WORDS!:trust:

But for now....

Well, they still did better than (among others) Spain, Portugal, France, and erm, Germany - all previous winners! :D

So come on, Alan, fill up that glass half-empty, cheer up mate, and congratulate your team on doing extremely well (only conceding two goals during open play in the whole of the tournament, being unbeaten in normal time in the tournament), and getting further than they ever have to their first final in 55 years!

It's a stepping stone, as Southgate has built a very good team and is taking them on a journey to further success.

Yes he made mistakes last night (which I'll get to in more detail later), mainly by bringing on what he considered as his penalty takers, so late on in the game, when they were 'cold' and hadn't felt their way into the match, and so put them in a massive position of pressure. Therefore it was no coincidence that both (including Saka, who'd come on earlier) missed their penalties.

However, throughout the tournament he got more right than he did wrong, and so I think the players and him did your nation proud, if not the behaviour of some so-called 'fans'...:rolleyes: Therefore, if you want to be angry at anyone for letting your country down, they're a much more deserved target.

Indeed, although sometimes it's simply a case of one of the two teams on the day just having the right players and tactics to overwhelm the other, and that's largely what England did to Ukraine, but it did paint a somewhat false picture at that point of England's capabilities.

If you remember though, when Sweden were playing Ukraine, to decide who played England in the quarter finals, you said you'd rather that England didn't get Ukraine, as you thought that they were more dangerous than Sweden, yet look what happened...

I disagreed, as I knew that England had a pretty bad record against Sweden, and so they'd likely have given England a harder game, probably akin to what Denmark did, as they're a similar type of team. This is where it pays to study form, or at least be aware of the relevant stats of the teams playing, before making match predictions;)

You'd get fantastic odds but that's because there's no way to make a prediction that's actually based on any sort of metric, it's just a blind punt. The sort of bet the bookies love.

I think if we'd met Scotland later in the tournament then we would probably have beaten them, but not really any point in speculating on that is there?

My thinking was that although I know Sweden were the better side you know what you're getting with them whereas Ukraine were more of a wild card. I never said 'more dangerous'.

I never really doubted that we could beat either though so it wasn't like it was a major concern, just an observation.

As it turned out Ukraine played poorly on the night.

Absolutely, which is why I don't bet, although based on the relative accuracy of my predictions, throughout this tournament, if I had done I'd have been quids in!

I guess it shows that if you do know a bit about the game and the teams playing, and also trust your gut instincts (the latter always acts as my final arbiter), the rewards are there, rather than simply relying on science...

Oh, and there's a whole new topic for discussion and how it correlates with hi-fi!:D;)

Not at all, it was just a joke. The difference in that game was that it was a 'local derby', and a one-off, which put a whole different perspective on it, much like local rivalry in club football (say Rangers vs Celtic or Man City vs Man Utd), where on the day either team could win, not necessarily the best one.

In terms of quality and ability though, this England team are on a different planet to Scotland - and so they should be!

Fair enough, but I think I could've assured you with relative certainty that Sweden would've been much tougher opponents, and who you wouldn't have beaten 4-0, going on 6-0, simply because history, and the type of players and style of football they play, dictates so.

Therefore, you don't need a 'metric' to work that out. That's my point:)

Marco.

My metric was that Italy were the best team in Europe and after watching them in the group stage I concluded they were the best team to go through to the knock-out.

Here's how you did in your predictions:

Eng vs Croatia - predicted 2-1 actually 1-0

Eng vs Scotland - predicted 1-1 or 2-2 actually 0-0

Italy vs Wales - predicted draw or 0-1 actually 1-0

Scotland vs Croatia - predicted 1-1 or 0-1 actually 1-3

England vs Czech - predicted 3-1 actually 1-0

England vs Germany - predicted England to win by 1 goal, actually 2-0

England vs Ukraine - predicted England 2-0 after a hard game - actually 4-0

Italy vs Spain - predicted 1-1 after extra time, Italy to win on penalties - actually spot on!

England vs Denmark - predicted 1-0 or 2-1, actually 2-1

England vs Italy - predicted England to win

Not that bad but not accurate enough to actually win any serious money.

Here's something else that happened before the game... English scum (I hesitate to call them fans) trampling all over, spitting on, and attempting to set fire to an Italy flag: https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1461324/Italy-news-England-Euro2020-final-Italian-flag-torn-Three-Lions-fan-video-latest-VN

What was that all about, and was such behaviour likely to endear themselves to many thousands of civilised neutrals watching, let alone Italians?

Read some of the comments below the video:

One Italy supporter said: "Brits, welcome to the Italian blacklist along with French and Germans.

"They throw firecrackers, boo the anthems of their opponents, crush our flag with their feet. Disrespectful, you are beasts not men."

And one said: "Spitting on your's opponent's flag...what's your f****ng issue?!"

Another added: "I saw a video where the British step on the Italian flag. English enjoy your gray sky and bathe in the English Channel, and don't dare to take a holiday in Italy."

Another wrote: "Spitting and stamping on the Italian flag. I have no words..."

And one condemned the group, warning they brought shame to England fans across the UK: "Stamping on the Italian flag, destroying property, lobbing bottles at strangers and barging your way into Wembley without a ticket are not the actions of football fans.

"They are the actions of football hooligans. Be ashamed of yourselves."

Is that a nice way to project yourself to the world? No wonder you're hated by everyone abroad!

I'm sad to say, based on the above and what happened in London yesterday, the bad reputation of English 'football fans' is well deserved.

Every country has some rowdy types who go too far, the difference in this country is the police are far too soft and let it get out of hand. Most other countries it would be tear gas, water cannons and heads being smacked with truncheons. Then a week in a cell on bread and water.

Not at all. Show me evidence of that, in the form of direct quotes? All I've ever said is how nice the country and/or the food/culture is or its people, when it's been relevant to do so (on topic in a related discussion), that's hardly "banging on about it". Why would it be "wishful thinking"? That's an interesting (and rather telling) comment, as I'm not anti-English; I'm simply anti English bigots and hooligans, which I presume as a right-thinking person, you don't have a problem with?

I cannot dispute your experiences abroad, which I'm sure would also apply to all the other decent English folks here.

However, that doesn't reflect the reputation abroad English tourists or football fans have in general, as indeed outlined earlier on this thread by what I said about people abroad treating you better when they know you're Scottish or Welsh, not English (with having a GB sticker on your car and them initially presuming the latter), something I've experienced MANY times over the last 40-odd years when travelling around Europe, plus what Grant told you of his own experiences in that respect.

It would help your position greatly if you showed some concern about that and rather less apathy.

How can someone be ashamed of someone else's behaviour? That makes absolutely no sense.

I've never had an England flag on my front door. There was a Three Lions emblem sticker that came free with a DVD I think. It was a car sticker but as I don't have a car I stuck it on the door. Not really sure how that 'sends out the wrong message' or even that it sends out any message at all. In any case it went when I had a new front door installed.

I did have an England flag in the upstairs window for one of the World Cups but I forgot to take it down and eventually it perished in the sun. If someone doesn't like it that's their problem as far as I'm concerned, I'll put up whatever I damn-well please in my own window. In fact if I know it pisses off anti-English wankers then I'm even more likely to do it.

I'm anti any kind of hooligan, their country of birth is completely irrelevant to me. All countries have hooligans.

Indeed, and unfair, but that's largely because England is so often portrayed abroad as 'Britain', largely because of the bias and prejudice that exists here [continuous England this, England that, as if it was the only country in the UK that mattered], so then can you blame foreigners from finding it difficult to differentiate between the two?

Oh come off it, you can be either proud or ashamed of your nation, for whatever reason, good or bad.. It's not just down to what YOU do. Surely you can't be THAT insular?

If so, I'm afraid that the vast majority of people think differently, as indeed is the message currently being portrayed in the media of the English nation being proud of their football TEAM, and its achievements in this tournament. That's got fook all to do with you, as you weren't playing:D but it shouldn't stop you from feeling proud of your team or your country.

And if that notion simply doesn't compute, then I get why, by the same token, you wouldn't feel ashamed by what we've been discussing, but it does make you rather unusual.

I didn't say an England flag, but rather a sticker with an England flag on it. Why did you feel the need to stick it on your front door in the first place?

It's small thing, of course, but it's not something I'd ever do. I feel the same about any such embellishments on cars, walls, or whatever. For me it smacks more of nationalistic arrogance than patriotism.

'Look at me, I love England', etc. Whether you see it or not, it does send out the wrong message to some.

Who said it did? You're assuming things again that I haven't said, and which certainly don't reflect my opinion.

You're perfectly entitled to hang an England flag out your window during a football tournament. That's absolutely fine, but for me it's quite different having something with an England flag on it permanently stuck to your front door. I just wouldn't dream of doing such a thing, in terms of broadcasting my Scottish or Italian identity, no matter how proud I am of my association with both of those countries.

Anyway, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that matter:cool:

I'm anti any kind of hooligan, their country of birth is completely irrelevant to me. All countries have hooligans

Yes, but not as many seemingly as England, or at least they don't get into trouble for it as often. I haven't seen any such disgraceful behaviour from fans from other countries during this tournament, have you? Or was that just a happy accident?

I'm quite sure that if Denmark had contested the final with Italy, and lost, their fans wouldn't have behaved in such a manner, or certainly stamped or spat on Italy flags *before* the game!

You really should embrace and acknowledge that England have a significant problem with football hooliganism, as remaining in denial of that FACT serves no constructive or logical purpose.

It wasn't an England flag it was a three lions emblem, which is the emblem of the football team, and it was stuck on there at the start of a World Cup for no other reason than I got it for free.

The England flag is the Cross Of St George, completely different. The only reason I would have that up is again if England were playing in a tournament or if I thought it would piss off some politically correct lefty wanker.

I don't really get the 'pride in your country' thing at all, sorry. I am very grateful to have been born in this country and to have all the advantages that entails. I'm grateful to the proceeding generations who worked and fought to establish it. The rest of the world should be grateful to them too, if it wasn't for them they'd be living under the Nazis or the Japanese Empire.

I don't take any personal credit for those accomplishments though, therefore I have nothing to be proud of. Equally I'm not ashamed to be English/British either which is why all this BLM woke shit and apologising for slavery nonsense pisses me off. That's no more down to me - or any other living British person - than the accomplishments were. 'Taking the knee' - take a running fucking jump, that'd be more like it.

As for the rest, that's fine and you're entitled to your view, but it's far from that of the majority.

Why take it down once it's up? It will do for the next tournaments, pretty rare that we fail to qualify. And as I said it is the emblem of the football team, it says I'm an England supporter, nothing more.

if you read my post again you can see that I was talking about Britain in relation to WW2. And yes the Commonwealth and the Dominions played their part too before someone mentions that.

Watch the documentary on the Italian Ultra organisation if you didn't already, different league of violence to the English hooligans. And the Russians even have training camps for their nutters. Check out what happens in South America, make our lot look like old grannies.

If I was going to do a worldwide crackdown on football hooligans I wouldn't be starting with the English, they'd be some way down the list.

Marco

Yet it wasn't the Italians tearing up and destroying the streets of Rome, both before or after yesterday's final, was it? It was England fans doing it in London, and for no discernible reason. So I guess that the 'Ultras' in Italy must've been on holiday?;)

So how does racially abusing your OWN players, as has been seen by 'England fans' on social media, simply because those in question missed their penalties last night, which goes well beyond hooliganism, fit with your view on matters?

Plus, as far as I know, England are the only country to have had both their national and club football teams banned from playing football tournaments because of the behaviour of their fans. Regardless of *anything else*, that tells its own story.

In any case, it's not a competition to see who wins the prize for football hooliganism, so regardless of who's done what before, the disgraceful behaviour of England fans last night fully deserves to be highlighted and lambasted!

Anyway, I think we've both said our piece on this subject now, so I suggest we move on.

Well my summing up of the game last night, England beat themselves by not playing attacking football after the 1st goal, they took their foot off the gas giving Italy the time, space and confidence on the ball, Italy should have had at least 1 man sent off, the foul on Soko by Chiallini was the worst but the ref seemed content just to dish out the yellows which he gave to the Italians in abundance. We should have learned our lesson when we played Scotland that sitting back and letting the opposition play is a recipe for disaster.

Pickford and Shaw were my stand out players for the England team, Kane needed to be substituted as after the first 20 minutes his effectiveness was literally non existent.

i'm not saying Italy weren't the better team, they won so clearly they were, we as a country need to stop with this mindset that we either aren't as good as these teams or if we do manage to beat them like we did with Germany, that they were a weakened sub standard team so it doesn't count and above all we need to stop allowing teams to have possession, the Italians were older than us we should have ran them off the park but by keeping the ball they made us do the running and by the end of the game we were a spent force.

Hi Mike,

Well my summing up of the game last night, England beat themselves by not playing attacking football after the 1st goal, they took their foot off the gas giving Italy the time, space and confidence on the ball.

I agree, although an element of that, in my view, was also Italy, after having been taken by surprise and conceding an early goal, from a move I suspect was straight out of the training ground (so kudos to Southgate for that) buckling down and imposing their style of football on England, as indeed they had done previously to most teams in this tournament, and succeeding, which England really didn't have an answer to.

And that was confirmed by how both teams approached the second half and the changes they made (or didn't make) to their system or personnel. However, I do agree that a valid criticism of Southgate is his tendency to err on the side of caution (which I guess are his natural instincts as a previous defender), rather than have his team play more on the front foot, although they could hardly have been accused of that against Ukraine.

Italy should have had at least 1 man sent off, the foul on Soko by Chiallini was the worst but the ref seemed content just to dish out the yellows which he gave to the Italians in abundance.

I agree that Italy should have had one man sent off, but for me that was Jorginho, for his disgraceful 'tackle' on Grealish, and by going in like that with his studs. Chiellini, on the other hand, was simply doing what he needed to do to stop Saka, by pulling his shirt and committing what's deemed as a 'professional foul'. It would've been a justifiable red card, however, had Saka been through in a goal scoring position, but that wasn't the case.

However, let's not forget that England only got to the final in the first place, due to being awarded a rather soft penalty against Denmark, so I guess that 'gaffs' from refs cut both ways;)

Pickford and Shaw were my stand out players for the England team, Kane needed to be substituted as after the first 20 minutes his effectiveness was literally non existent.

Agreed, although I thought Sterling also had a good game, and indeed a rather good tournament overall. Plus, at the back, Walker, in particular was as solid as ever.

i'm not saying Italy weren't the better team, they won so clearly they were, we as a country need to stop with this mindset that we either aren't as good as these teams or if we do manage to beat them like we did with Germany, that they were a weakened sub standard team so it doesn't count and above all we need to stop allowing teams to have possession, the Italians were older than us we should have ran them off the park but by keeping the ball they made us do the running and by the end of the game we were a spent force.

I also agree with most of that, although in terms of the Italians being older, yes of course, but also WISER and wilier, plus more experienced at 'game management', and so successfully used that to their advantage. The young England players still have much to learn about handling the 'ugly' side of the game, which can also be vital to win tournaments...

I'd also be so bold to suggest, in terms of mindsets, that England as a country (well mostly the media) need to stop all the irksome and jingoistic 'It's coming home' crap, and abandon that nonsense for the forthcoming World Cup, including in general practicing a little more humility. It would serve them much better overall, including getting more of the non-English citizens of the UK behind the England team, rather than praying (as many were last night) that they'll get pumped!;)

Goodness me, that's really quite shocking, and the levels of violence shown, both towards Italian and their OWN fans, is simply sickening. That bloke getting punched and kicked on the ground for doing nothing and simply trying to defend himself is criminal assault, pure and simple, so those responsible need found and jailed accordingly.

But WHERE were the police??? It's not up to the stewards to stop these sub-humans, as they're not paid the appropriate danger money! All it would've taken was for any of the twats, so clearly enraged over nothing remotely justifiable, to have been carrying knives, and people would've died...

It's really a sad indictment on English society, and for me stems from colonialism and the days of 'Rule Britannia', where some English people have an unjustified and grossly overinflated sense of superiority, and a desire to rule/run roughshod over others whom they deem as their 'inferiors', and therefore is ingrained in their psyche. Add that to intolerant individuals, inherently predisposed towards violence, and you have a potent cocktail for creating the mindless and repulsive scenes we've just witnessed.

'WE are ENGLAND!!' So fucking what?? It doesn't automatically make you any more special or important than anyone else, or have a God-given right to win football tournaments, or indeed anything else for that matter, so get that into your fat, bigoted and thick, thuggish heads!

And that comment, incidentally, is aimed SOLELY at the THUGS (pure and simple) shown in those videos, or anyone guilty of the same, or who has that mindset, NOT anyone here.

It makes my blood boil though, as it does that of anyone I've spoken with today. Del's whats app and other group chats have been full of folk, both English and Welsh, voicing their disgust at and condemning the disgraceful behaviour they've been witnessing from 'England fans', courtesy of footage from social media.

Notice how it's not been reported on the mainstream news... Heaven forbid they should showcase the scum making up some of their 'great nation', and therefore detract from all the backslapping over their team's performance, however justified the latter!

As for a proposed solution for punishing these vermin?

Utilise today's smartphone technology to create digital passports, loaded with information about a person's criminal history, in terms of hooliganism or other similar forms of thuggery, and when scanned into machines located at large sporting arenas, prevents entry for such individuals. However, they'd need to have been caught and charged first for such, before their information would be logged and show up on the system.

However, with the right infrastructure in place, it *could* be done, and would be a damn sight better use of said technology than what was once being proposed in order to combat Covid! If you're going to use technology to spy on or discriminate against people, then do it for the right reasons!

In terms of banning England from future football tournaments, based on what I've just seen and also everything else in that respect, I think that's now a conversation that should take place, among the relevant authorities, and which may still happen, as it's happened before under similar circumstances.

I myself though, as much as I detest the scum responsible, am fundamentally against blanket bans on anything, as it simply doesn't solve the problem, and in this instance would only unfairly penalise the vast majority of England fans who are decent, non-violent, law-abiding people and only seek to follow their team in peace with their friends and families, not to mention the equally innocent England manager and players.

No, any punishment meted out for said behaviour should be done *at source*, by directly targeting those responsible. Therefore, in that respect, using what's just happened as the catalyst for introducing the passports I've mentioned or other measures like it, and overall drastically ramping up both the security/police presence at these type of events in future [operating a zero tolerance approach to ANY form of violence or hooliganism], and the strictness of the vetting procedure, in terms of exactly who is allowed to attend.

Marco.

Ive not commented so far on last night, interesting that we all watched the same game but as always we differ as to what we watched. England started well for 20 minutes they were the better team. Towards the end of the first half and all the second half Italy were in charge. Italy changed a few things with early substitutions, England didn’t. I thought all the English forward players all 4 of them were poor, Mount missing , Sterling the most overrated player in England throwing himself to floor at every opportunity, Kane well looked after by the Italian defense. If you watch the game back, the Italian back 3 played most of the second half in the England half. Jorginho should have been sent off , Chiallini one of the few times he was in his own half during the second period was to grab that shirt collar, it how they play. As for the penalties, you don’t bring players on 2 minutes before the end of the game, although as that meant Rashford was playing right back , 2 minutes was probably a long time for him in that position.
Just my opinion of course.

No, it doesn't change the season he's had with Man City, but that's irrelevant, as we're discussing the Euros. Scoring three goals at this level, not including his assists, considering he's a winger/attacking midfielder, NOT a striker, is a superb return by anyone's standards. Plus, as I said, read his stats, which fundamentally aren't those of a player who's had a poor tournament. Your argument for that would've been better supported by Kane, who apart from a couple of games, was largely anonymous, including in the final.

Well, he's not a striker either. He's an attacking midfielder - and 3 goals and an assist in 7 games is a fantastic return for any midfielder. There's no argument against that. Just been looking at some of the photographs/videos of the aftermath and they have made me change my mind - England football teams should be banned from international matches for a couple of years.

Absolutely shameful behaviour :(

I have to agree on the sentiment, but not the banning. Sadly that tar brush is very wide. Banning a country's teams due to the behaviour of the a tiny minority would cause much larger problems.

I watched the game, thoroughly enjoyed it and I thought both teams were excellent. The bemused look on the Italian players' faces in the first half was a rare sight, but they came back hard in the second half to level up. Penalties are always a sore point in football, but only one team can win.

To think we wouldn't be in another competition due to a handful of idiots would be a big shame.

Just been looking at some of the photographs/videos of the aftermath and they have made me change my mind - England football teams should be banned from international matches for a couple of years.

Absolutely shameful behaviour :(

I'm guessing/hoping you mean England football fans??

No I would go for the teams, sorry if you don't agree - drastic measures are needed to counter appalling behaviour in my opinion.
The point must be made in the strongest possible terms that that behaviour is unacceptable - and over the result of a football match

The Italian fan beaten in the video shown earlier could quite easily have ended up dead, if not brain damaged, as a result of the attack. How will he feel now? Permanently anxious/bitter?
How will the vicious attack affect the views of his family/friends/general population of Italy?
No point saying that a ban would affect the enjoyment of innocent fans - what about my opportunities to enjoy holidays on the continent without being labelled as a vicious, mindless thug?

I completely agree and sympathise with your sentiments.

However, remember that for the scum concerned, this has little to do with football, but rather a form of tribalism among those with over-zealous nationalistic tendencies, plus an arrogant false sense of entitlement, and so the belief that 'The Great England' DESERVE to be champions of Europe, regardless of whether their team is good enough. Therefore, they can't hack it that their team has never won the Euros, still haven't (or anything else recently), and so use that disappointment and frustration as an excuse to activate their hooligan tendencies, in order to appease a false sense of injustice.

Therefore, the sheer aggression and violence that they've shown towards both their own kind (as in countrymen) and innocent Italian fans, transcends beyond a mere football match, and rather into the realms of England 'deserving' to be the best at ANYTHING, whether that status has been earned or not, simply because 'WE ARE ENGLAND!', and with it a right to feel superior, which they mistakenly believe is justified.

As I've said, I'm afraid it's a trait largely built into the English psyche, since the days of colonialism, and which fortunately lays dormant in most, but which when given a good enough excuse, is easily ignited in the maladjusted or bigoted, often also predisposed to violence, as we've sadly just seen in graphic detail. I'm afraid that those dormant traits will never disappear, but always be bubbling away under the surface, as it's in your DNA.

However, as far as excluding the England football team from some future tournaments as punishment, well as someone who champions civil liberties and is fundamentally against all forms of blanket banning or authoritarian diktat, I'd be a hypocrite if I approved of the banning of something simply because it suited m biases and sense of correctness, so that's not the answer. I've already suggested what I think that is, or could be.

I'm afraid that sadly could be the case (and all you've said above), now and for sometime to come, unless things change drastically and England actively does something to solve the problematic hooligan and racist element in its football support.

I can tell you from speaking with my own Italian family, both here, and notably abroad, that they're utterly disgusted and appalled by what they've just witnessed (I won't tell you the words they used to describe the behaviour of those responsible - and that feeling's being echoed throughout the country), but English (read as British tourists, as unfortunately the rest of us will be lumped in too, such is the nature of the beast) won't be welcome again in Italy for some time, so I hope that those responsible for that feel justifiably proud of themselves!

I agree with much of what you say Marco, just this bit is mistaken (and I didn't want to mention it for fear of being labelled "racist"):

"As I've said, I'm afraid it's a trait largely built into the English psyche, since the days of colonialism, and which fortunately lays dormant in most, but which when given a good enough excuse, is easily ignited in the maladjusted or bigoted, who are often predisposed to violence, indeed as we've sadly seen in such graphic detail. I'm afraid that that'll never disappear, and always be bubbling under the surface, as it's in your DNA."

If you look carefully at the attackers, one clearly isn't what I would consider "English" - "British" perhaps.
Also the "commentator" (and I strongly doubt his innocence in the attack, as he seems to be glorifying it) doesn't sound "English" to me, although with the fashion for "patois" I may be mistaken.

Yes, I hear what you're saying. However, some folks will adopt English traits, simply because they *so want* to be English [why I've no idea], instead of staying true to their own roots/culture, whatever that may be, and so the worst of them will behave the same as the other louts.

As an example of the above, in terms of so wanting to be English (or even British), which in certain circumstances I understand, but for me, isn't automatically considered as an 'upgrade', I was born in Scotland, and therefore my nationality is Scottish/British (although with also having an Italian passport, I have dual-nationality), but I've NEVER wanted to, or have even considered myself as British, instead of Italian, simply because I was born in the UK.

Why should I? I'm very proud of my Italian roots and heritage, which extend way back in my family tree over 100s of years, so have never had any desire to shun them in favour of being British, as ultimately it's no more 'special' than being Italian!

It's just a pity so many immigrants coming into the UK are all too keen to swap their ethnic identity for that of British and shun their natural heritage in the process, although I guess in many cases it's understandable if those concerned are seeking to escape from oppression or worse, or simply just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families, and therefore see becoming British/English as the passport (no pun intended) to achieving those goals.

Just as an example of the kind of mind-numbingly braindead, racist, dimwitted and dumb shit the likes of Marcus Rashford has had to endure from scum on Twitter:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/rxClzI.jpg

Among that largely unintelligible drivel, the use of "ya" (instead of 'you') is interesting, as it tends to be a form of [west coast] Scottish colloquialism, but I guess there may be some misguided Scots who feel deeply enough about English interests, to commit such an appalling act of stupidly!

In any case. I'd love to hunt down and expose these fuckers, put them on national TV at peak viewing times, and MAKE them apologise to the victims of their abuse and their families. Then I'd fine them heavily, remove all Internet access from their homes, confiscate their smartphones, ban them in future from all social media platforms, then ban them for life from all England games (if indeed they had the desire to attend any)..

That should hit the spot, in terms of demonstrating a zero-tolerance approach to racist online abuse!;)

And oh how I wish I had the power to implement it!!!

It's just so ridiculous. He was born in Manchester! Doesn't come much more English than that.

Terrible behaviour over a game. Why do these "humans" (and I use that term lightly) feel that they can behave like that?

Disgusting.

racism is worse in many countries tbh. its a strange kick back to olden times, a bit like religious intollerance that just never seems to die out. Although the uneducated yobs get blame of it, it is just as prevellent in upper echelons of society; maybe even more so, just that they are mostly smart enough not to say it on line or in print etc.
can we get rid? i dont know really. so many countries especially in eastern europe are like this.. america too..

its a damn shame but i think its gonna take another 50 years yet

to start I am not in to Fruitball
but I did watch the game and no mater who won I would have been happy
Saying all that it was 71% possession of the ball for Italy I believe
Why did England pulled back they should have kept going they where playing against a much older aged team Cellini is 37 yes?

BTW that yellow card was deserved the act was just class, most entrattaining really horoshow, Only reason he did not get the red IMO as he is a nice Bloke
Pity it ended up in penalties it should have been played till sudden death extra time after extra time after extra time, they do get a decent wage so why not?
Penalties: England did not have a chance against the Italian keeper

About all that racist thing and such guess why I do not watch or have any interest in Fruitball
All that said

World cup next year the Lad be 20 then so I hope and say if there is going to be a England / Italy final there watch out Italy
