was just one of those things tbh. she had an op before the wedding that didnt go well.. i could have pulled out and was given the option... but i dont think that was a personal option. After a couple of years she got worse again and we had to move here as it was suited to disabled more than the house we were in. I had to give up my business to look after her.

It's the best we've viewed in about three years, the current owner is actually a 'Smart' house designer so it's as energy efficient as it can be. Our surveyor said everything that's been done to it has been done well using the best materials (it was originally just a two bedroom bungalow, after being extended it's got four bedrooms and a self contained annexe). Didn't think she'd ever find something she likes as she's so attached to her old place but this place was so impressive (and in a good road) she couldn't come up with any excuses not to buy it!
& if I squeezed her anymore she'd be a husk of a woman ;)

Too right, mate. At least you stood by her, which was the right thing to do, and commendable. I'd have done exactly the same, had it been Del, but you know my feelings on these things:)

That's extremely sad Grant. Very admirable though. It just shows how much love you had for her and she'd have loved you even more, for looking after her the way you did. bless you mate..

Helsinki, among other places there, fascinates me. When we do our Scandinavian tour, the plan is to fly/drive for a month, probably arrive in Sweden (or whichever country was most central) hire a 4WD vehicle of some description, and take in as much of it as we can.
Finland, Iceland and Sweden would be of most interest, so if we missed Norway and Denmark, we could do them again, but we'd like to get out into the sticks and see the REAL part of the countries concerned, not just the cities or touristy bits, hence why a car's necessary - that's where you often find the real gems!:cool:

Yes, I've been to Finland. Beautiful country (especially if you love trees and forests, which I do), with friendly and very helpful people. The food and drink is great: look for 'Bear' beer, and enjoy venison and raindeer. The Fins use a lot of berries in their cooking.
Whilst you're in Helsinki, take the hydrofoil or ferry across to Tallin in Estonia. The old part of Tallin is quite beautiful and well worth visiting. :)

Fair enough. It's just that Ursula has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of houses the we nearly but didn't buy, what has been done to them since and whether she feels that we could have done them better - I wondered if Del was the same! :D

I seriously considered moving up to Scotland (got family up there). With what I'd get for my place I'd be able to afford something pretty decent.
Then I recalled a day I'd spent at a dog show up there (my late partner was a championship judge). I had three base layers on and a fleece and a coat over the top and it was still feckin' freezing and it was May!
Anyway the plan is to move in with my current squeeze (aka lumbered with me) in the not too distant future, she's just bought a new place

Ah yes, Tallin... You mentioned that before. That does sound right up our street, so would defo be on the cards:) Noted on the other things... The Swedes also love berries, and I'm a massive venison fan. Not had reindeer before, but I suspect it's similar?
The challenge might be to find some decent veggie food for Del! But she's quite adventurous and often just enjoys how different countries do salads, and as long as there are chips!:D

Lovely place to grow up, Mike. We LOVE Orkney. Del and I went there for a holiday a few years ago (drove up from Glasgow where we were living at the time), and stopped at Skye en-route, which is another gorgeous place (we love the islands), and then crossed over to Orkney on the ferry from Thurso. We enjoyed seeing all the brochs (Broch of Gurness, etc), Standing Stones of Stenness, Scapa Flow and the Italian Chapel.
We just love places that are WAY off of the beaten track and evoke 'a land that time forgot', and I'm sure you'd agree Orkney is like that - totally unspoiled and unravaged by the worst aspects of modern life (gross commercialism and consumerism), which in many ways also applies to the Highlands of Scotland. Yes, it's colder up there and more remote than where we are now, but I lived in Scotland for over 30 years (Del 10 years), so we're used to it, and have regularly had winter holidays in places such as Austria and Switzerland, where it's been as cold as -30C!
Cold doesn't bother us - you just wrap up more in proper thermals!:D:cool:

I'm pleased you enjoyed your holiday there mate, the Italian Chapel is beautiful and quite extraordinary and the islands are full of interesting things to see, my last house there was near the bay of Skaill which is where Skara Brae a Neolithic settlement is.
Growing up there wasn't bad mate i got to do a lot of fun outdoors stuff like scuba diving and water skiing and when it's not pishing it doon it's a lovely place in the summer especially with days that literally don't end, like anywhere though it has it's drawbacks it's remoteness being the main one.

Thanks. Other half needs to see her youngest daughter, who still lives with her, settled in her own place before I move in. Although we get on she's a little needy which would grate on me if we were sharing a house. I'm happy to wait till there will just be 'the two of us' :)

Not sure where that will be yet but we've got plenty of room to play with, other than the large open plan kitchen/diner/lounge downstairs there are two other reception rooms and a separate annexe with it's own kitchen and bathroom. Upstairs there are three other bedrooms, one with an ensuite and another separate bathroom. The property is also detached so that's a bonus.
This is a likely candidate, it's downstairs at the front so a little away from the other living area. Current owner uses it as an office.

About half of Del's dedicated dressing room is taken up with shoe storage, and that's just her heels, which she has to store 'in a certain way', not including anything else:D And she WANTS me to take her into Liverpool today to get some more (!) Peep-toe slingbacks for the summer/various strappy heeled sandals, I believe, and dresses to match.
What joy!:lol: Nah, I like treating her (as she dresses well and looks great), and it's a lovely sunny day here, so we'll be able to go for a nice walk around the docks and hopefully catch some lunch at a nice pub serving food outside:cool:

My Dad was strictly Radio 2. Back in the day it was the single worst music station imaginable, and medium wave of course.

It had probably improved by the 90s, but the 7 hour trips in a vinyl seated Fiat 131 through the 70s were the stuff of nightmares.

Radio 2 and 3 was considered as playing 'old man's music', and totally frowned upon, especially as it's what my dad listened to, which as a teenager is a no-no:doh: And R4 was for nerds who liked listening to endless discussions about mind-numbingly boring shite (politics or some such):rolleyes:

None of us rated New Wave or any of that 80s British pop. There was the odd exception but mostly we considered it to be throwaway pap. Actually I did like The Cult, but no-one else did. And one youth was into U2, but I think that was partly because he was from Belfast.
Some of it I've got into in retrospect. I do listen to the 'Absolute 80s' station sometimes. I still have to switch over if they play The Smiths or The Housemartins though.

Radio6 for me these days. And working from home, I can have Lauren Laverne on which is my fave show currently. New/old indie, some rap/urban for Marco and the Kool Kidz and the occassional forgotten classic too.
Plus she has sciencey and maths guests for a 15 minute slot on specific days which keeps the grey cells stimulated.
If that's your thing I would also recommend a podcast Daniel and Jorge Explain The Universe. Particle Physics and Quantum Black Holey stuff for the layman. Did you know there may be diamond rain and oceans on Jupiter ?

Cool, but back then for me it was almost the complete opposite! "Proper music" is of course subjective:)
It wasn't really until sixth year at school that my tastes changed and I discovered some of the bands/artists you've mentioned above, and who I now love. Although I don't think I entertained The Beatles until my mid 20s - possibly later!

To let you know where my head was at in those days, my fav Phil Collins track was 'In the Air Tonight', as I loved the (now iconic) drum solo, and the overall 'atmospheric' vocals:D

I was never into Genesis personally. I tried but I couldn't get with it.
I didn't like much contemporary music until the late 80s and the Madchester bands like the Mondays and the Roses. Then rock came back with Nirvana, Mudhoney, all that scene. That was good times, the late 80s early 90s.

Well, we were in agreement about Genesis, but sadly not the rest. I HATED all that 'Madchester' shite!:D Plus I wasn't a big fan of most of the music through the 90s, probably because I didn't get to hear that much of it, as I was working silly hours running my business.. Back then, I didn't do much else but work!
No, for me the early 80s was where it was at, and particularly anything new wave or electronic. In that respect, to my ears, (aside from a few exceptions) the music got progressively worse the longer the 80s went on! Plus, the late 70s/early 80s was a very happy time in my life, as well as there having been some great music around:)

Flowered Up, from Camden too. Not as well known, but their single It's On is up there with the best and the 11 minute song Weekender with it's associated video was groundbreaking.
They had their very own Bez, an ex Chelsea Headhunter hoolie called Barry who dressed in a black leotard and huge bright yellow flower head. Did a gig with them at Brixton Fridge and they were incredible. Nice guys, too.

Weekender is epic, and a firm favourite... Also agree about R6 Music, really serious about music - old, new, anything as long as it's quality. Shame I can't get it in the car or van, but it's a regular on my job site radio :) Better than R1 which seems to be 90% autotuned-to-death cack, pretty much identical to what you'd find on any current NowThatsWhatICallShite CD.

It looks as though the castle is just a shell - I assume the habitable building used as the museum, is the building to the left in the second photo. With 240 acres of land, you certainly won't be troubled by the neighbours! :lol:

I know you'd be happy to be as far away from the "great unwashed" as possible, but from what you say Del is more of a social animal. So after the local handyman Mr. Mackenzie (who also runs the post office) has repurposed one of the portacabins (painted it pink) so Del can have her dressing room again, she may find her usual mates are reluctant to make the 600 mile trip. So she is forced to model her new online purchases for Mrs. Mackenzie, 2 goats, and a half dead seal that got washed up on the beach. I doubt any of them have a taste for prosecco, although I'm sure the goats will have a good old go at your canapes. Goats will eat just about anything...
The only good outcome I can see is if the seal makes a recovery :)

The point being Grant that Del likes to go in the shops herself, which won't be possible when living in the arse end of nowhere. And online sellers have been known to get your order wrong. Our Morrisons delivery has no problem substituting a box of Jaffa Cakes with a tube of Colgate toothpaste. And have you seen the shops up there? Basically you get a post office that sells cornflakes, fishing lures and not much else :(

As a kid, I used to hunt rabbits with my dad at the local farm, and we had shotguns for that very purpose, and the kill was brought home for my mum to skin and cook (yes rabbit is a commonly eaten meat in Italy - we don't keep them as pets:D), so if I moved up to the highlands I would almost certainly rekindle my interest in the sport and hunt something more interesting and indigenous to the surroundings.
