You may not have, if you've been on a desert island for the last day or so...

He is dead?
It is shame he did not make 100, as he missed out on the telegram from the queen.

Marco

Indeed, but what I'm getting at is the *hugely OTT* TV coverage of his death (and also his life up until that point), as if it's automatically presumed that everyone in the UK is a Royalist, and therefore happy at having their usual programmes unceremoniously cancelled, in order to 'enjoy' endless coverage of this stuff.

You'll be missing it in France, but we've had virtually nothing else on the main TV channels here since the poor chap popped his clogs yesterday.

Oh trust me, I am not missing it.
I remember when Princess Di died. The day of her funeral, I went out for the day in my car. It was awesome.
Hardly a soul on the road. I set off from Bristol, and headed up through Wales to play on the Evomtriangle.

I don’t really watch much TV though. The TV I do watch, I record, and watch when I want to, or when I have time.

It is a shame he has died, but 99 is a bloody good innings. He did some good things in his life, but also çame out with some hilariously non PC comments.

I'm no royalist but I do think there is a lot to admire about Philip.

However the BBC coverage was just totally OTT; the same programme broadcast on all BBC TV channels (BBC1, BBC2 and BBC News 24, with BBC4 off air) at the same time and the same programme broadcast on all BBC Radio channels (R1, R2, R3, R4 on FM at least) at the same time. Fine changing the schedule to respect his death, and running special programmes on one of the main TV and Radio channels, but ALL of them?

God help us when the Queen dies; we'd better stock up with toilet rolls again.

as for having all channel on same program; well its a form of communism, and should be banned... not that it bothers me now as i dont have tv.

Phillip was a decent bloke imo, and would probably be appauled by it all

Spot on (on all counts), but especially the bits highlighted. It's bloody ridiculous!

What I'd like to know, however, is WHO and/or WHAT controls/drives the agenda with all this stuff, and decides that the WHOLE nation WANTS to watch it morning, noon and night?

As you can bet your boots that the majority of the population will not only share your (and my) sentiments, but when switching on their TVs this morning, and being once again bombarded with the same stuff as yesterday, will be going 'FFS, not again!' 'When does it end?', not 'Oh goody, bring it on!'.

So WHO exactly are the media catering for with their ridiculously OTT coverage of this event, to the near-exclusion of all else??

I wonder how much telly he used to watch? Not a lot would be my guess.

I want to know what these cancelled programmes were. I can't recall there being anything worth watching on BBC1 or ITV1 in the last 20 years at least.

Even the coverage of Prince Phil's death has got to be better viewing than 'Inside The Factory', 'The One Show' or 'Countryfile' even if it is presented in the same, moronic, sub-'Blue Peter Special' style.

Marco

Great British Menu, for starters, as I'm a foodie!!:ner::D

Plus, if you're a fan of the major soaps (not me, but MILLIONS are), all of those were also cancelled.

Now of course you can take the elitist view that such stuff is crap and not worth watching, and so nothing was missed, but the point is that some people like that stuff and shouldn't be deprived of it and have their FREE choices, in a supposedly FREE country, DICTATED to by the media for days on end, just because a member of the Royal family has died.

It's simply another insidious form of mind control (which Grant has touched upon), imposed by the system, which I abhor, regardless of my feelings towards the Royal family.

But I can equally argue that I have zero interest in food programmes (which is true) but there are dozens of them choking the schedules daily (also true) when they could be showing something that I want to watch instead.

The reality is the Prince Phil coverage will die down after a couple of days and you get your food shows back whereas I get nothing of interest to me in perpetuity.

I agree, but that's a different argument. We could all complain about there not being enough of the programmes we like broadcast on TV, and of the 'shite' that's on instead.

However, it's a different thing when you're following a regular series, and which you expect to be on at a certain day and time, being unceremoniously cancelled because someone else has decided you should be watching something else that they've decided is 'more important'!

Everyone should have the FREE choice to watch what THEY want, based on the choice that's available on the usual TV schedule, and not have it dictated to them by someone else, regardless of the arguable quality or diversity of that choice. That's my point.

Sure mate, that's fine if you like the stuff that's on there. For me, a lot of it is bollox. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for my Netflix subscription (was invited by a friend), as I rarely use it.

There are a lot of TV programmes I enjoy and follow on the BBC, dramas such as Line of Duty, foodie and antiques programmes, football/sports programmes, music programmes, all sorts, and similar applies to ITV and CH4, none of which is available on the platforms you mention - and I want to be able to do enjoy them, instead of having my viewing flooded by what amounts to pro-royalist propaganda.

But it is more important than Eastenders or some food show. You opt to live in a country with a monarchy, and a monarchy that is liked and respected by the vast majority. You have to take the rough with the smooth.

For me (the food show), yes , because as sad as it is for any human being to die, I couldn't give two hoots about the Royal family. I have ZERO interest in what I consider in today's society is a vulgar and grossly outdated institution.

Beyond hearing about Prince Philip's passing ONCE in the news, I don't need reminded about it again, far less have the main TV channels flooded with the story for days!

To repeat what Patrick said:

Fine changing the schedule to respect his death, and running special programmes on one of the main TV and Radio channels, but ALL of them?

Tell me, WHAT justification is there for that??

I haven't 'opted' to live in a country with a monarchy; it was where I was born, which of course I had no choice in. If I had made that choice, I'd be living in Italy.

That's not to say that I don't enjoy living in the UK, I do, as it's what I've mostly known, but it doesn't mean I have to automatically like its traditions and can't criticise them.

The blanket coverage of PP's death is fine if you're a flag-waving Brit, and can't see past the Royals, but that's not me. I'm an Italian Roman Catholic, who just happens to have been born in Scotland, so have no natural affinity with the Royal family or indeed anything else that's of predominantly English/Protestant interest.

If it's really an issue for you then yes. This country is going to change anytime soon. And for all other intents and purposes we're all bloody lucky to have been born here and/or have the right to live here.

My Kurdish mate who came here as a refugee can't comprehend how much the indigenous personnel take the benefits of living in this country for granted and moan about the most trivial of things. (Although he's not keen on the fact that knocking women about if they give you grief is frowned upon here, but that's a different issue).

Sure, mate, but you're still missing the point. I'm indirectly being forced not to be able to watch the programmes *I want* to watch, when they should've been broadcast, because of something I have little interest in.

And I'm not just ignoring it, because having my choices [with anything, not just TV programmes] dictated to like that is something that greatly irks me. And I prefer much of the broadcast material to most of what is available elsewhere, therefore I won't derive the same enjoyment from watching the latter, as I would the former.

It is, and that's because of the absence of real news. And I agree, it's ridiculous - but then all the news media is these days. Think back a couple of weeks to the woman that was killed. Apparently a 'national outcry' as a white female was killed (leading to the 'all men are evil' reports). On the same day a black female was killed in London and nary a word was said.

It's all ridiculous mate, all of it.

But the media genuinely have very little to write about so they do one of two things; harp on about it until people puke, or make something up and then harp on about it until people puke.

This is the news! :D

Yup, no excuse for that either, Adam. Just because I'm a footy fan, doesn't mean that I'm going to be guilty of double standards.

Trust me, I feel EXACTLY the same when England are playing an international friendly game against some nondescript team, which is of ZERO interest to me, but which the BBC and/or ITV have regardless deemed to be of great interest to the whole of the UK, and rather 'thoughtfully' rearranged the TV schedule accordingly!

There needs to be much less (often ill-considered) 'presumptions' made by the programme planners for what the majority of viewers want to watch, and instead far more consideration and thought put into what said majority *actually do* want to watch, plus more fairness applied when catering for the rest!

As a feeling fellow Human being my heart goes out to Her and her Family.
Hers must be breaking right now, made worse by her duty to make a statement.

Feelings about the Monarchy taking a backseat for this one, argument for another Day...sorry about your loss Mrs.

I agree with your sentiments, Gaz. However, perhaps if the media or 'powers that be' hadn't insisted on force-feeding blanket coverage of such to the nation, then the criticism you're referring to wouldn't have happened?

It's the recently increasing removal of one's free choices in other areas, not just this, and you'll know what I'm referring to in that respect, which is getting to become a concern for some about just how much of a free country we now actually live in...

Marco I think you voiced my opinion perfectly in this last paragraph

So just to be clear, Gwyn (apologies for referring to you earlier as Gavin - I just glanced at your username without reading it properly), are you saying that the licence fee was misused as a result of not offering people more of a free choice of what to watch?:)

I'm also interested in your reference to China...so are you saying [much as Grant did earlier] that our broadcasters, and/or those who control them, are guilty of communist behaviour? If so, I do agree, which is why I think it needs exposing and eradicating, lest we see more of such unsavoury and distinctly undemocratic behaviour from them in future.

Returning to the article Alan linked to earlier (see here: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/entertainment/tv/bbc-sets-up-complaints-page-for-viewers-who-want-less-coverage-of-duke-of-edinburgh-s-death/ar-BB1fviVN?ocid=msedgntp) I had to laugh at the comments from Royal commentator, Richard Fitzwilliams, who due to his position is obviously heavily biased, I quote:

"The BBC’s coverage after the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh, has, as far as I have seen and heard, been exemplary".

Well it might've been "exemplary" if you're a card-carrying, flag-waving Royalist, but otherwise no!

As we've said, the programme planners, or whoever is behind these decisions to saturate mainstream TV with a particular topic (whatever it is), need to put their biases aside and get out of the bad habit of automatically presuming that the viewing public are as interested in what's been broadcast as they *think* they are, and worse, not imposing such control on people's ability to make THEIR OWN choice of what content to watch, especially such as with the BBC, on a platform that THE VIEWING PUBLIC/tax payers pay for!

Exactly, Alan. The key phrase there is "total overkill". That's the problem with these things: it's always extremes. What's wrong instead with a response that's reasonable and proportional?

Unlike in the old days when there were only three, four, or maximum, five TV channels, so you could almost understand an event like this dominating across them, but not now when there are literally hundreds!

Therefore, there was ample opportunity to cover Prince Philip's death in as much detail as those interested would've liked, and a fitting tribute created, without having to annihilate the content that was due to be broadcast. As Alan (mad boy) correctly said, that's what the 'Red button' is for!

So BOTH could've happened simultaneously, therefore keeping EVERYONE happy - but no, that's simply not good enough for the British media, who have to be seen as fawning royalist fanboys, to appease who or what, I'm not quite sure?

Therefore, the "total overkill" nature of the media's reaction to his death is what's caused resentment for some, when it could so easily have been avoided!

Mike was addressing me not only at the time, but before, and the subject was about him 'moaning' (although I know he was just taking the piss) about how long this thread was going on for, so THAT was predominantly what was on my mind, and why I presumed the self respect comment was aimed at me.

As Kevin's pointed out; it's simply how you interpret what was written, so in this instance there is no right or wrong.

One little tip I'd put forward though, when you're writing something, is always put (or stress) the bit you'd like readers to notice most at the end of a sentence, as that's often that's what they'll remember most (as it was the last thing they read), and therefore will likely respond to;)

As much as I sympathise with that view and understand it, I don't agree with it.

*Good journalism* should be about reporting the news in a way that YOU (as a journalist or member of the media) think is accurate, justified and measured, and therefore the subsequent coverage delivered is proportional to that, rather than pandering to the 'wants' of the Daily Mail or brainless PC brigade.

Are they who secretly run the country?? I doubt it, so don't appease them; fuck them!

*Good journalism* should be about 'I'll say what I like (as long as it's legal), if I feel it's justified, and above all TRUE, and fuck what the detractors think', which is exactly what I do on here!:D;) Be a FREE-THINKER, not a sheep!! BE YOUR OWN MAN, not someone's paid puppet, and STAND UP for what you believe in.

Of course I understand that's not how the media works, but it should be in a genuinely free country, and the fact that it doesn't, is why I've rarely ever bought newspapers or consider as 'gospel' how the mainstream media reports the news, as in reality it simply represents what the system wants:doh:

Well perhaps it's time to change the system?

Marco.

Yes, because he was seen as a dangerous threat to the status quo by the 'powers that be', which I guess proves that he was onto something;)

However, it doesn't mean that someone else from a different era, with similar values and a hatred for oppression, won't be more successful... In any case, I believe that one day, sooner rather than later, Scotland will be rightfully independent, thus end centuries of unjust English [read now as Westminster] rule.

Never been too sure about this poor, downtrodden, but proud Scottish nation being forced in to an unholy union.

Didn't political union between Scotland and England come about because England didn't want Scotland joining up with France, and Scotland needing money from England to pay off it's debts incurred as a result of Scotlands failed colonial ambitions?

Decent climate, not to cold or warm, not too much rain (certainly in Wrexham), and not overly commercialised or crowded, such are many parts of England, and the people are warm and friendly:)

It would just be nice for the nations that make up the UK (outside of England) to be able to make their own decisions and manage their finances, based on what's BEST FOR THEM, not Westmonster - and also for them to be recognised in their own right by people abroad, instead of having Americans, for example, being unable to differentiate between England and Britain, thinking that they are one and the same, because the former (and fooking London) is all they ever hear about!

Government spending per person in various regions (source: ONS):

As we can see London get the most, then Scotland, then the South East, then Wales. The idea that either Scotland or Wales gets a raw deal is clearly incorrect. It's the East Midlands that's getting screwed.

Plots in American movies are written in such a way as to try and explain the scene because they know the average American viewer is too stupid to work it out for themselves.

Regarding Scottish independence the main reason why they haven't been cut loose so to speak is the North Sea oil and gas fields, they've also allegedly found oil off the north west coast as well and even though burning oils is somewhat out of fashion it still generates a massive amount for the government. I was against Scottish independence pre Brexit, but since we have kicked the EU to the kerb it feels a bit hypocritical not allowing the jocks another referendum.

Indeed!

And the Scots [not 'Jocks', please], quite rightly WANT that government to be Scottish, not a fooking English-controlled one, based in Westminster, and said "massive amount" remaining within Scottish shores, not huge chunks of it being squirrelled down to England!

And where the decisions being made by said government are biased towards Scotland, and its best interests, instead of being ruled by an English government ultimately biased towards England and its best interests. Fair's fair, eh?:)

:exactly:

Plus, when independence is gained, you can also have Faslane relocated somewhere in Englandshire, and the HUGE associated costs of running the base, not to mention the threat of it being an enemy target in the event of a war, which Scotland almost certainly won't have started.

However, I *am* pro-Scottish, simply because that's where I was born and spent a huge chunk of my life, so I have a natural affinity for the country and its people, and also because while I lived there I experienced the many downsides of being ruled by an English (Westminster based) government!;)

go back a little while, When the whole of the UK was run on coal..where did all the coal come from...which benefitted the whole of the UK...including Scotland

(Britain’s rules on ownership of natural resources were clear well before oil was discovered; the UK Continental Shelf Act was passed in 1964. Before the discovery of oil in 1969, the Scots opted heavily against independence: in the 1966 general election the Scottish National party failed to win a single seat. The subsequent rise of Scottish nationalism, supported by the slogan “It’s Scotland’s oil”, is evidently in part an attempt at a retrospective resource grab.)in brackets.. knicked off the www.

In answer to your question, possibly, but not necessarily because of the independence thing, but rather because Del and I both love Scotland.

She's always wanted to live in a castle, and be a real princess, lol, so we'll see what the future holds, but if we were to move back it would be to the highlands, and in that type of property or country house (cashing in on our property portfolio) - well away from the rat race!

Not if carefully chosen and with the knowledge and experience of being able to attend to all that was necessary. We do dabble in the property market and have been doing so for years. In any case, if not a castle, then it would be some other form of country house:)

However, after carrying out an extensive survey it was found to be riddled with dry rot, plus there were problems with the roof, so it would've just been a huge money pit, and in the end we gave it a miss. It was gorgeous inside, with a HUGE inglenook fireplace, banqueting hall and all sorts, plus set in large grounds.

Del loved the place and had set her heart on it, so was NOT happy it fell through, but it would've been a stupid move, business wise, and that's where I have the last say. I notice now it's a 'holiday cottage'

Yes there is, but it's mainly wind and driving rain and the further north you go the less daylight you have in the winter, i grew up on Orkney it's a nice enough place but the winters up there aren't the picture postcard fairy tails you see on TV, regular power cuts, long dark nights that seem to last forever, it's ok for a holiday but moving to a place like that takes some adjustment especially if you move there from England.

I seriously considered moving up to Scotland (got family up there). With what I'd get for my place I'd be able to afford something pretty decent.

Then I recalled a day I'd spent at a dog show up there (my late partner was a championship judge). I had three base layers on and a fleece and a coat over the top and it was still feckin' freezing and it was May!

Anyway the plan is to move in with my current squeeze (aka lumbered with me) in the not too distant future, she's just bought a new place

Why the fuck everyone, cannot just put their heads together for the good of everyone, makes me extremely sad..the fucking human being..we are fucking hopeless..

Methods stretching way way into the future with capability, ( heads together for the good of everyone ) are here now that just require proper understanding of what they set out to achieve .

The stand out from the crowd, thinking like this, is the philosophy of free software. The faster its followed, the faster we escape the f****** hopeless that you refer to.

Governments gravitate to what is easy, rather than what will help humanity. they apply band aid solutions when found out by brave individuals , to what was morally wrong in the first place. Just look at these news stories as example https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-13/microsoft-buying-speech-recognition-firm-nuance/100064590 , what then follows, and we can now all look forward to is more mass surveillance of humans, as governments busily buy into that capability

leading to crap like this: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-15/australian-based-uyghurs-on-chinese-blacklist/100063916

Things instantly begin to improve when we all turn off proprietary operating systems forever, and fight back like i did in 2003 and never looked back.

Plenty of choices here https://distrowatch.com/
and full text of the philosophy here: https://www.fsf.org/
and a youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJi2rkHiNqg
Debians statement here: https://www.debian.org/intro/philosophy

But free software is so much more, as it is the ability to share information related to improvement of society, for the benefit of everyone.

Real commitment would see not subscribing to any social media , or using a mobile tracking device also called a phone , but some will find that difficult, if so do it in steps, by becoming aware of where
your information goes, and knowing that alternatives are there and you can be part of it.

Lovely place to grow up, Mike. We LOVE Orkney. Del and I went there for a holiday a few years ago (drove up from Glasgow where we were living at the time), and stopped at Skye en-route, which is another gorgeous place (we love the islands), and then crossed over to Orkney on the ferry from Thurso. We enjoyed seeing all the brochs (Broch of Gurness, etc), Standing Stones of Stenness, Scapa Flow and the Italian Chapel.

We just love places that are WAY off of the beaten track and evoke 'a land that time forgot', and I'm sure you'd agree Orkney is like that - totally unspoiled and unravaged by the worst aspects of modern life (gross commercialism and consumerism), which in many ways also applies to the Highlands of Scotland. Yes, it's colder up there and more remote than where we are now, but I lived in Scotland for over 30 years (Del 10 years), so we're used to it, and have regularly had winter holidays in places such as Austria and Switzerland, where it's been as cold as -30C!

Cold doesn't bother us - you just wrap up more in proper thermals!:D:cool:

My main memories of Arran are, beautiful place but impossible to come to terms with the bloody midges.

Edit: My mate ( a Scott, went off hill walking for a day while I went for cycle ride with our wives).
During the walk he had a dump, but was attacked by swarms of midges - he ended up running/staggering/rolling down Goat Fell with his trousers around his ankles.

Yesh, that's 'cos you're a southern softie!:ner:D;)

No, I know what you mean. There's a MASSIVE difference between the climate (and warmth) where you are and even mainland Scotland, never mind the highlands! We feel it even when going from North Wales to Glasgow, to visit friends and family, but then simply adjust.

It's comes down to both what you're used to and feel comfortable with, and neither Del nor I have ever been 'sun worshipers' or people who can't function in cold weather. Don't get me wrong, we love sunny weather and warm climates too, but it's not a 'must' for either a holiday or somewhere to live. Different strokes for different folks:)

I love the rain, actually. but not constantly such as you get on the west coast where you are, or in Glasgow, where I used to live, where it would often rain for days on end and in the winter months hardly ever get light.

But here in Wrexham, where it rains on average 2 days a week, I quite enjoy it and the lovely fresh smell it leaves in the air. What I hate most are dull, cloudy days, especially when it's also cold, which I find totally nondescript and depressing. I call them 'nothing' days.

I visited Iceland a few years ago, specifically to see the Northern Lights. It was around September (you need a dark sky to see them properly) and it was very cold. At times bitterly cold, with snow and ice on the ground.

So there I was looking up at the night sky enjoying the Aurora, with the music of Pink Floyd going through my head, and stamping my feet to keep warm! (I was wearing my walking boots with double socks). I could only put up with it for about a half hour, before I had to retreat to a warm hostelry.

Yeah, I like the sound of the vibe with PF:) You've also been to Finland, Barry, haven't you?

Helsinki, among other places there, fascinates me. When we do our Scandinavian tour, the plan is to fly/drive for a month, probably arrive in Sweden (or whichever country was most central) hire a 4WD vehicle of some description, and take in as much of it as we can.

Finland, Iceland and Sweden would be of most interest, so if we missed Norway and Denmark, we could do them again, but we'd like to get out into the sticks and see the REAL part of the countries concerned, not just the cities or touristy bits, hence why a car's necessary - that's where you often find the real gems!
