View Full Version : The Tea Cup
A tea thread as requested...Gear, Teas etc.
I've only really developed a taste for tea in the last couple of years, I was always a coffee man, I still enjoy good coffee but tea is my main drink now. I find it's also a little gentler on my fragile digestive system, I don't drink a huge amount, maybe three or four cups a day but the same amount of coffee would upset my giblets.
I know PG Tips is hardly a high end blend but the balance of flavours suits me well. I also like Yorkshire tea, the stronger, richer taste makes for a cup for me to savour but too much of it sets off my dodgy innards again. PG is usually served up in my favourite mug but I like to use a nice bone china cup for the Yorkshire, I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I did once read a thin walled cup allows you to take in more air as you drink which enhances the flavour, feels a bit posher anyway lol. I once tried peppermint tea but just one sip was enough for me.
Yes it's gentler I think. Probably better for you too.
This is ginger green tea, brewed at 85c for 3mins. A spoon of honey to sweeten the deal.

Rather nice. twinings teabag i think it was.
My father in law always insisted on bone china for tea - It does seem to be the right way to take it (although I'm not averse to a big mug of Yorkshire tea - milk, no sugar please:))
ive got some bone china stuff but cant find it.. i must have put it somewhere safe
I just got in some tea from whittard of Chelsea just now.
Lovely packaging I have to say, including the carriage box, and all is recyclable too.
Came fairly quickly. Not sure if it's great value but we will see what quality is like over weekend hopefully.
Roobios, puerh and jade oolong.

ive seen these.. a teapot and cup for one. how do they work roy??
People collect these, I've got two in case one's in the dishwasher.
You just use the small teapot in the normal way (holds almost two of the cups) & once brewed serve it in the cup, it's just enough to start the day
only dishwasher ive ever had is me.. guessing im cheaper? and do a better job
Good idea having a separate thread for nice teas!:)
However, guys, could we please ensure that, much like the coffee and food threads, that this one is PICTURE HEAVY, so get yer cameras out! I want to see lots of pics of people's teas, not just dialogue about it, hokey dokes? Ta!
Marco.

Might I direct the attention of Infuseophiles to Orwell's essay A Nice Cup of Tea, published in the London Evening Standard, Saturday January the 12th 1946..

I dropped a topper earlier, in the cat food aisle in Sainsbury's... It was HOT when it POPPED, so that always means the stench will be BAD-ASS:D:eyebrows:

One cup of tea looks very much like any other cup IMO.
Lol... you'd probably say that about coffee, too. YET - this thread has had nearly 200K hits and 4K replies: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?54775-The-Coffeehouse-Baristi-Barista-Bariste
:ner:;)
Plus... Much like food, it's HOW it's presented, in terms of the crockery used, etc - and Grant's making the required effort. I'll join in tomorrow with some nice Darjeeling in my lovely 1940s vintage bone china cups and saucers!:D
Bought cheaply from a charity shop, I hasten to add....

In the above Orwell claims there are 11 points to the making of "a nice cup of tea". I don't agree with them all:
[1] Not necessarily - some of the finest (nicest) tea I have drunk was some leaf tea I brought back from Burma. Also black Russian tea is very good. Tea doesn't have to only come from India, Ceylon or China to be good.
[2] Agreed
[3] No, a glass tea pot is also fine, and although Orwell doesn't mention it, a tea cosy should be used to keep the tea in the pot warm
[4] No - it's a matter of taste. I prefer my tea weak, so I don't let it brew for too long.
[5] Don't agree - 'filter style' teapots are fine
[6] No - the water should be just off the boil. Boiling water 'scalds' the leaves and impairs the flavour
[7] Agreed
[8] Possibly
[9] Agreed
[10] Agreed
[11] Agreed
Lol... I couldn't be bothered reading through all that, so I've no idea what you're agreeing and disagreeing with!;)
Marco.
I couldn't find a way of making an image of the pdf file of Orwell's essay - but then you are not interested with reading anyway.
Lol - it's an interesting piece, Barry, but before I read what you'd written properly and clicked on the link, I was expecting 11 'bullet points', outlining 'How to make the perfect cup of tea', which I could then cross-reference against your replies, but when I was faced with those reams of text [said 'essay'], to have to plough through first and find what you were referring to, the lazy-ass in me said 'No'...:D;)

Hmmm - "the good the bad and the ugly" IMO.
The Good: Formosa Jade Oolong. A lovely cup, but must be drunk without milk (as should all fine teas)
The Bad: Pu'Erh. Well I am being a bit critical here, but I don't like fermented teas and also Pu'Erh is high in caffeine.
The Ugly: Blueberry Rooibos. Fruit-flavoured teas are the spawn of Devil as far as I'm concerned; pity as Rooibos is one of my favourite teas, and is virtually caffeine free.
Addendum - Whittard are good, established coffee and tea importers, so I would have any doubts over the quality of their products.
In my yoof, we never had coffee in the house, only loose tea.
I had it with 3 heaped teaspoons of sugar and at the end drank the tea leaves with the sugar....slurp.
Now - only either drink rooibos or herbal tea - can drink 'normal' tea but need sugar to take away the bitterness.
Never touch coffee (never liked it) - find the taste just yuck

I'm new to tea drinking so trying as many as I can.
Do you like warming, spicy wintery flavours, such as a cinnamon and ginger? If so, this will hit the spot, as it's absolutely gorgeous: https://www.teadrop.co.uk/products/malabar-chai
It's our default 'winter tea', especially near Christmas, as it has that 'Christmas cake' flavour appeal. Very warming and comforting, rich and aromatic!
I'd also recommend anything else from that company, Grant. It's all top-notch:)

mmmn, i like chocy cake :D nice cups too
Yeah lol, now and again we enjoy a nice cup of tea and cake, usually around 3.30/4pm in the afternoon, and preferably during the winter months. Just hits the spot!:)
And that one was produced by an artisan bakery in Wales. We get them delivered to us by the dairy, where we get our milk... Which one do you think we should try next (scroll down for the cakes):

:)
Marco.
Like bakewell and lemon slices. The farmhouse looks good too
Yeah it's a quality company, mate. We get great service from them, which was very handy during the first national lockdown when all the idiots were clearing the shelves of essentials in supermarkets with panic buying!
So we were getting all our bread, fruit and veg, milk, butter, yogurt, eggs, cream and all sorts from them, delivered to our door.
Bur yes, I think we'll try the lemon iced cake next:)
Marco.
Imperial Pu erh. A bit of lemon and honey.
This is a fermented tea.

Not the nicest colour that, dude, is it?
Looks like what I emptied out last night from the washing up bowl:D;)
Love the mug, though!
Marco.
The mug was all it was about dude.
It's Darjeeling with milk. All tea looks a bit shite TBH it just isn't photogenic.
I agree, although you're not supposed to put milk in Darjeeling!:D
Fair enough if you like that way, but that does partly explain the colour. Scroll back to the pic I posted on the previous page of the Darjeeling and cake I had, and observe it's lovely deep amber colour, sans milk!:eyebrows:
I think the only 'fine tea' I might put milk in is Assam.
Marco.
Lady Grey. Teabag, 2m 20secs at 95c infuse. A little lemon and honey. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201114/ce98f6c81611dc7eaaf3fef85faf8133.jpg

Marco.I scrolled back and I am sure the cake was nice but the tea, I am afraid my dear Deirdry, is just a clear brown liquid.
You can make it pretty with fresh mint etc but on its own it's always gonna be a loser looks wise.
BTW I don't like Darjeeling without milk so Input it in. I also think it tastes best luke warm or even cold.
Lol, whilst I agree that tea isn't particularly photogenic, we'll have to agree to disagree on the colour... On my display, I see it as more of a lovely deep amber, just as it should be, not simply "brown liquid":eyebrows:
However, what makes you put milk in Darjeeling? It totally spoils it, IMHO, as it ruins its delicate floral flavour, and really doesn't taste nice. But I guess if you like like that, that's cool:)

Marco.Dude I can see quatum events and entangled particles interacting across intergalactic distances. I am the Boltzmann brain that conceived this universe, so it's hardly surprising:D
Anyway, it's just in the reddish brown category I would say.

Marco.https://uk.iqos.com/
No messing around with liquids and coils and regular hardware purchases. No liquid leaks all over the place.
Genuinely much closer to a real smoke than any vape.
£5 for 20.
95% less toxins than tobacco smoke. Lungs don't fill up with vape liquid that I used to have to cough out each morning. Plus no lung weasiness I get with vape liquid.
Also I don't suffer from too much nicotine which gave me a bad caffeine like feeling.
A blend of my own.
Rather nice too. Green and ginger, jade oolong and Earl greyhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201116/d8cc46237d793bce075b8212f5ef0f01.jpg

teabag is made of starch i think so composts easily.. tea was great; might give it longer next time. the cup set(there is a plate too) is 19th c china from the George Warrilow & sons Queens factory in Stok on Trent.
Yeah, brewing times for these types of teas vary, so a bit of 'suck it see' is needed :)

Oh..there's two types of pot here...
This is an Indian herbal thing my wife has made every winter, You add one good tea bag near the end.
It is good to fight a cough , stuffy nose ect... add a little lemon and local honey and your good.
It has really helped a lot in the winter months. I decided to use some of her nice tea cups.
Fresh ginger, cinnamon, cloves,Dushanda, large tea bag, local honey and lemon.
You will feel better with in an hour.
Looks good, Jeff. I like natural stuff like that, when you've got a cold or whatever, as opposed to popping pills!
I'll have a look in our local asian shops and see if they have any:)

Sounds like some sort of fancy spliff! :D
it does lol.. was rather nice, altho no highs;)
Whole milk,Cadbury hot chocolate and whipped cream.
Not exactly tea but it is perfect for a cold night when you gotta get up and start cooking a turkey at 5:00 am and Tea would keep me awake all night.
I got this tea in a clearance bin for $1.00.
It's really dark in color but not very strong in flavor.
It pays homage to Queen Elizabeth II , they also had one for princess Diana ( people still profiting from her passing all these years later) .
They really missed a money making opportunity , they could have buried her with a cct camera and led lights.
I wonder how many people would pay for a private channel of 24 hour coverage of her internment?
They have done everything else to make money off of her.
Got all of our boxes of tea out today, we have way more than I thought because it was in cabinets everywhere. If we can't see it we buy more then find we had a box or two stashed already.
My wife Nosheen loves tea, so I put it all in one place . We are not the most organized, after grocery shopping we just fill holes in the cupboards and pantry Willie nillie.
I'm having a cup of Typhoo tonight.
Nice big collection. I've a good few now too. Gonna need to find a place for it myself.
Nosheen just did some black Friday shopping tonight and ordered a Royal Albert , country rose, China bone tea set.
The set of 4 ,cups, saucers, cake plates ,large tray, tea pot, creamer and sugar bowl.
We went to Macys and where ready to spend up to $800.00 .
Belive it or not we could get full place settings but not a matching tea pot ,sugar bowl and creamer from Wedgwood.
That was a deal breaker for her. We got a really nice set that all matched for $296.00.
Its not a big name but if it makes her happy, I'm happy.
Herbal concoction today.

Good stuff ,It was hard to find coffee there .
So I had tea alot.Probably is same. Its Pakistani, a speciality that is made into an instant tea for the market
Nosheen got her Birthday present early a new tea set, it is compete with dessert plates for 4 but she is ordering 2 more for 6 with matching tea spoons and a dessert tray.
She is so happy, she always wanted a tea set. The pattern has been around since 1962 so replacement pieces should be easy to find if it ever goes out of print.
I just need to order her a nice tea cozy for a 6 cup pot. (Old Country Roses) Most common pattern on the planet. She likes it so much she just told me she ordered mugs and a full dinner set for 8.
Nosheen got her Birthday present early a new tea set, it is compete with dessert plates for 4 but she is ordering 2 more for 6 with matching tea spoons and a dessert tray.

Standard issue tea with milk for me. The occasional stove-top espresso coffee. Fruit tea if i'm somewhere with poor options for either.
How does everyone attempt to ensure that cups of tea proffered are as likely as possible to be able to honestly receive a "very nice, thank you"? It's all in the description of one's preference I suppose.
When asked:
Q: How do you take it?
I have standardised on:
A: Strong, hardly any milk
Usually requires a:
Q: No sugar?
A: No thanks
But I think this is more reliable than risking diluting the main not dishwater message.
Worth a purchase, apparently so good I have bought it twice:

Yeah, I like that too, mate. We have a rather nice Chinese teapot and cups, which we use when having Jasmine tea (do you like that?) with some Chinese food:)
We've got all sorts of little bowls, plates, spoons and mugs to match.
Marco.

yes i like jasmine. ive a couple of small teapots, including a cast one, but being just me im inclined to brew it in the cup.
Nosheen got to use her new tea set today, we had to use a cheese knife as I think we lost the little one for butter.
All in all it was nice, this isn't done much here in the U.S. but in Pakistan tea is a real thing and Nosheen really misses it.
We are building a nice dinner set same make and pattern. The tea served was Yorkshire Gold.
Marco,
Tea has not replaced coffee for me but we have come a long way from boiling tea bags in a pot!
If you see something wrong feel free to comment.
All looks very good. I love the pot cover.
Strong liquorice Pakistani tea.. Lovely stuff.

Really nice tea set (I love the tea cosy). But, what is the butter for, have you got some scones out of shot?

Aaah right - I thought that they were some sort of Danish pastry, on my laptop screen it looks like they have icing on top :)

Of course there is a drizzle of icing on top, in California nothing is left understated . I was lucky to find something with out edible rainbow sparkles.

 sacrilege :)
Just read up a bit on internet and it looks like it is usual for American scones to have icing or a dusting of icing sugar on top - apparently they are more like rock buns in texture.
Bit of a shock for me - apologies if I appear rude :)
I don't live in America , I live in Kalifornia.
And rudeness is as the heart of our culture, I still have not gotten the live to be offended thing down, so it's all good.
I will keep my eye out for proper scones. Yesterday I saw some dipped in a hard chocolate shell with mini M&Ms on top.

Scottish scones.
ingredients
250g/2 cups self-raising flour or plain flour and bicarb soda etc
50g/¼ cup butter
2 tbsp caster sugar
125ml/½ cup plain yoghurt or buttermilk
65ml/¼ cup milk
pinch of salt
instructions
Heat the oven to 220c/200c fan/gas mark 7.
Sieve the flour into a large bowl, add the cold butter and gently rub them together with your finger tips.
Gently mix in the salt and sugar.
Whisk the yoghurt and milk together in a jug and then pour the liquid into the dry mix and cut into the mixture with a knife until it starts to come together.
Finish bringing the dough together with your hands (don't over do it), then roll out to 3-4 cm thick on a floured surface.
Cut into circles with a cookie cutter (dont twist it) and place on a baking sheet.
Brush with milk and bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and starting to turn golden.
Remove from the oven and cool on a rack.
Serve with butter and jam while still warm.
Enjoy!

Just don't get mixed up with drop scones, which are more like small pancakes. They are also quite easy to make, and seem also to be associated with Scotland.

Yes, we have all heard of the dangers of getting mixed up with drop scones, so many young lives destroyed...
A gateway drug for sure.

You stopped drinking tea now, daftee?;)
Just ordered some of this for breakfast tea (gets a good rep): https://www.theteamakers.co.uk/products/english-breakfast-loose-leaf-tea?variant=40373011742919
Marco.

I drink portsmouth loose tea from
https://www.tea-and-coffee.com/
For me they are affordable and huge
A huge selection of tea and coffee and
Struth they do Scottish breakfast tea too.
I use the following to make my tea
As its easy to clean and makes
A stronger cup of tea.
You place your tea in it plus water.
When the tea is ready you
Place it on your cup or mug
And the tea comes from under it.
It is good too as i get no
Loose tea in my mug.

Milky Oolong Tea
https://i.postimg.cc/TYFLf7Xc/002.jpg
One of the most unusual tea specialities in terms of production as well as character and is produced almost entirely by hand in the Province of Fujian. Immediately after withering the moist leaves are heated for a short period in milk water steam, which conserves the pretty, lightly olive-green leaf and cup.
I've been drinking too much coffee of late, so I'm going to drink more fine tea. I have about a dozen leaf teas to choose from, but I doubt if I will post many photos as the various teas look similar: it's the taste that differs and that cannot be shown in a photo.
Guava Tea
From the esteemed Satemwa Estate in northern Malawi comes this delicious interpretation of a Lapsang Souchon. The tea leaves are lightly smoked over guava wood during the drying process to infuse an aromatic smokiness and a well-balanced light tarry flavour that doesn't overpower.

Jasmine Green Tea
https://i.postimg.cc/sXWC7ng0/002.jpg
With its delicate floral taste, Jasmine tea is one of the most popular flavoured green tea varieties. Made the traditional way, the tea is harvested in spring and stored until the Jasmine flowers are picked in summer. The opened blossoms are placed with the tea and left to infuse their fresh delicate scent to create the perfect balance of flavour.
I realise I have been letting the side down somewhat with my photos of the brewed tea poured into a stout mug. Mea culpa! Not that I think it makes any difference to the taste of the tea; for aesthetic reasons I have found a bone china cup to use.

Some green tea I brought back from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) from the Glenloch Tea Factory at Katukitula. I believe it is also known as Orange Pekoe tea.
