an new month.. and a glorious day to start it with sun splitting the trees..
Ditto here, but.... WE BADLY NEED SOME RAIN! And it looks like there's not much chance of it for quite a while.
Anyway, now the lockdown has eased a bit, are you going to start getting out a bit more now, or was that trip to the service station (or whatever) a one-off?:)

The thing that pisses me off with weather forecasters on TV is how they always portray a rainy day as being 'doom and gloom' - we need rain to survive!:doh:

Seems to be a bit cooler this morning, but not sure how long that will last... Way too bloody warm yesterday for me, though. I just can't go that dry searing heat and humidity for hours on end, with hardly any breeze... Anyway, roll on the rain tomorrow!:yay:

Hate that type of 'sticky' humid weather, where you're just constantly sweating and feeling dirty/icky. Thank goodness it's a little cooler here, so far, accompanied by a pleasantly refreshing breeze! Going out for my usual 3-mile walk soon (don't like pushing myself too much in this heat), and which will set me up nicely for lunch later!:cool:

For some reason I don't understand they've stopped putting weedkiller on the pavements so the weeds are flourishing. Couple of thistles opposite me are now 5 foot high and there's grass growing in the gutters.
The barber shop, which is closed of course, has a hedge growing in front of the entrance. He's not going to be able to get in there when he comes back to re-open. And a full day of rain will just speed up the growth. :D
I quite like it, makes the whole place look a bit more 'rural'.

back to normal here. cloudy and overcast. about 10c.
YAY - it's PISHING DOWN like mad here (and has been since the early hours of the morning)!!:yay::yay:
It just feels SO much better now, as it's reduced humidity and removed that awful mugginess in the air... Still warm though, at 15C, so we've got the kitchen door open, to let in the lovely fresh air, while listening to rain fail outside - no sweaty bollox, lurvely!!:D
Let's hope it continues like this for the rest of the day, and the lawn might begin to resemble a lawn again....:)

Finally some rain here as well. Started bout 3 oclock this morning till just after dinner. Sheep are happy again they have been hiding in shade last few days.
Stayed dry but cloudy all day, still hit 20c but doesn't look like that will last according to the forecast, but hit and miss if we'll get any rain.

Showers this morning
Was heavy rain earlier but brightened up a bit now. Still overcast though. Sun is trying to get through. Big thistles opposite doing well. Look like ganja bushes from a distance :)
It's a bit shitey today, but it's not raining much, which kind of defeats the aim. Dry, dull, grey days serve no useful purpose whatsoever!:doh:;)
It needs either to PISH DOWN for hours, or be nice and sunny. You can keep the in between stuff.

Less wind here today, and some nice sunshine at mo. Grass growing well shame garden grass is doing same might have to cut it this week.
A few more showers today, but freezing cold. Touch and go that I may light the fire! British summers, hey?!
We've certainly made up for the lack of rain here over the past couple of days. I think we must have had a month's worth already. Plus several brief showers of hail. 'Flaming June', ho ho.
Stayed dry so far today, couple of hours in the garden pruning stuff but need to cut the grass really - but black clouds looking ominous and BBC says 99% chance of rain in the next hour...

Gradually does it Bev - your new tyres will still have some mould-release on them and will need a bit of 'scrubbing in'. Are the Michelins like the 2Cs they make? That's what I had fitted last time. Softer rubber on the sides for cornering, and harder down the middle for long life :)

Got some nice Welsh lamb kebabs, which I'll be having with a spicy tomato couscous, and we'll enjoy with a nice chilled bottle of bubbly!:cool:

Lovely rain and thunder just now... 'Monsoon' stuff, and proper chucking it down! We've got the back door lying wide-open, as it's still warm, nearly 18C.
It's just so peaceful, relaxing and atmospheric, listening to the rain pouring down in an otherwise near-silent setting, accompanied by the odd clap of thunder... Plus that GORGEOUS (subtle) smell of ammonia in the air, which you get after fresh rainfall. They should bottle it, as it's so intoxicating!! :)
Rain starting to ease now... It's really cleared the air though, as it was *so* muggy before. One thing I can't stand is stuffiness and high humidity!!
Anyway, aside from all that, it'll have done the garden (and grass) the world of good:cool: Sometimes the simple pleasures in life are best.

Some proper lightning here, like you get in American horror films. But rain disappointingly brief again. Need a real overnight downpour - some of the garden is looking a bit sorry for itself in spite of our best efforts :(

Two thunderstorms this evening, the last one was very close. Proper 'movie rain' with it too.

The sound would take about 5 seconds to travel a mile, so even if it were directly overhead it might still be a second or so away. So how can we get the flash and the sound happening simultaneously? It's got me wondering about where the sound actually originates - is it when the bolt hits earth, at the start, or during? And why when the lightning happens for maybe a second, does the rumble go on for ten seconds or more?
They should put "How?" back on telly. I preferred it when Fred Dineage could answer all these questions for us, instead of doing programmes bangin' on about East End villains.
The lightening discharge causes rapid heating (ridiculously high temp's - tens of thousands degrees centigrade) of surrounding air which expands and makes a shockwave - boom:)
Just back from walk with dog, I thought that I would get her out before it gets too hot. Already very warm (out just after 07.00) and a little bit "sticky", so wouldn't be surprised if we have a thunder storm at some stage today in Suffolk.
By the way, anyone else see those photographs of lightening and rainbows together - I would love to see that.

I'm sitting at a table in our outside eating area now, under the shelter of a large parasol, just listening to the pitter-patter of the rain falling, and getting some fresh air before bed, as it's quite stuffy indoors. It's 16C outside, so still warm enough to feel comfortable, and just lovely and peaceful!:)

Ought to give the grass a going over, but I ratherlike the daisies and buttercups that have appeared in the last few days. (I detest well manicured lawns - especially those with 'mower stripes'.)

Interesting... I have similar views, as I prefer a lawn to look 'natural', but also well-maintained, in fact the same as a garden. I dislike gardens which simply look like homages to garden centres, some trendy 'fashion statement'/garden designer's 'wet dream'/entry to the Chelsea Flower Show, or simply what Monty Don has been 'proclaiming to the nation', at any given time...
My preference is much for a 'managed wilderness', which is attractive and tidy, but which looks like nature has created, not man.
As for the weather, unfortunately it's bloody humid here, and currently just under 24C, so looking forward to another downpour later to cool things down and freshen up the air!:)

And particularly unpleasant having to sleep on top of the quilt, with dreams of Captain Ahab coming after you :D Hopefully this won't be happening to me - it'll be our first night with the IKEA mattress!

Interesting... Our house has VERY thick (sandstone) walls, but they have the opposite effect, and simply retain the heat from the sun all day, so by nightfall, the upstairs bedrooms in particular are like ovens!:rolleyes:
And when you're naked and still SWELTERING HOT, there's nowhere left to go...:eek:
The only way we can keep rooms remotely cool during the hottest weather is to close all the curtains [ours are lined and thick} and not allow the sun in, plus also employ the use of electric fans, blowing cool air right at you... The only way we can keep rooms remotely cool during the hottest weather is to close all the curtains [ours are lined and thick} and not allow the sun in, plus also employ the use of electric fans, blowing cool air right at you... We've got a downstairs bedroom. It's slightly cooler, but not much. When it's THAT bad [such as it gets when the outside temp all day has been in excess of 28C], I've been known to sleep outside on the lounger!:D

We only have upstairs bedrooms. They do get hot, but not unbearably so as long as we have all the windows open. Our bedroom faces due East, so doesn't have the sun blazing in all day. Downstairs stays cool, so there's the option of using the sofa bed, but we've never had to resort to that so far.

Yeah, that's probably the big difference, ours just sits in the sun, baking all day in the heat, and so at night when it's time for bed, the heat in the upstairs rooms (and in particular air quality) is pretty unbearable. Windows are open wide too, but if there's no breeze, all you're doing is letting in hot air...
Quite simply, UK houses were never designed for such heat, unless you can afford air-con. Our family house (villa) in Tuscany had lovely cool marble floors and proper (ventilated) shutters throughout, so the air could still permeate, but the heat from the sun was kept out.
I remember during the summer months, it could be blistering hot outside, but as soon as you opened the front door and stepped inside the house, it was rather like opening a fridge door, even without air-conditioning. *That* is what you need in houses here, if you're to cope comfortably during the summer months, when temperatures can hit in excess of 30C, sometimes for days in a row - and there's no bloody escape from it!:doh:

We had options: Order online for them to deliver (in a couple of weeks, and for an extra £50), click & collect (strangely, though they were in stock at Warrington we would have to collect from Norfolk or Northern Ireland(!), or brave the queues.
Anita went on Tuesday (I was at work), and when she got there she thought "That queue's not so bad". Turned out that was the queue for customer services, folk returning stuff! Proper queue was quite a bit longer, but moved very quickly. No doubt it would be much worse at weekend.
We left the mattress unrolled for 24 hours before using, so last night was its maiden voyage. A million times more comfortable than the old Tempur. Still didn't sleep that great as it was too warm (not the bed's fault, it was a muggy night), but at least turning over was effortless compared to the old one. Woken by the alarm, which doesn't happen very often :)
Based on that one night I'd say it's great, and at one sixth the price of the outgoing mattress, a no-brainer.

I don't like the same weather all the time, sunny everyday nearly for the last 7 weeks. We need a good shower every week or so. I suppose there will be a food and water shortage soon. May was the sunniest and driest month on record I believe in England. Not sure if that has anything to do with the lockdown.

Plus we're aiming to be as self-sufficient as possible in future, so have planted all sorts of veg (yellow courgettes and celeriac arrived for planting this morning), and therefore want to ensure that it gets well-watered, hosing aside!

I only use rain water for watering, I have 2 waterbutts and a wheelie bin I use for reserve, so I need the rain every few weeks. Had about 1/2 an inch last Thursday which was good but before that hardly anything since early May.
It would suit me if it was April all year round.

What a beautiful, magical and atmospheric place that is in the snow, especially where we go, out in the sticks away from every bugger. Yes raspberries are very cheap and easy, more people should grow them. Here I don't get anything like I crop I got at my last house, I think lack of sun is the reason for that. Blueberries are more expensive and more trouble. If these die I don't think I will bother to replace them.

Our house is Victorian but well insulated thanks to all the building work we've done on it. As an example, it's lovely and cool inside it today but, step outside and it's roasting! Our bedroom is on the corner and faces south and east, so does tend to be warmer then most of the other rooms, with the exception of my listening room which is next to it. This faces south and west and has a huge bay window - the sun is beating into it currently and it's like a sauna in there at the moment, although this does keep cartridge suspension rubber nice and supple!
That said, our two bedroom windows are open (plus the window in the en-suite) and the curtains are nearly fully shut to keep it cool. The windows are all sash, too, which are superb for effective ventilation.

Sometimes, having windows open can make things worse - if it is really warm outside you're just letting the warm air in. In this case closed windows and a good fan is better :)

Our house is also Victorian. but it may not be as well-insulated as yours. We've got original leaded windows, which aren't draughty by any means, but definitely not as efficient as modern designs. We also have floor tiles throughout, with rugs, and no carpets, and we've kept the curtains closed in the lounge since early this morning.
It's certainly cooler inside (by approx 3C), at 25C, as opposed to the current 28C outside, but I'd hardly call that "lovely and cool". Our ideal indoor temperature is around 17/18C, and that's also what we're most comfortable sleeping in at night. Right now, it's as warm in our bedroom as it is outside!:eek::nono:
So if it's as warm as that in your bedroom tonight, or anything approaching it, I wouldn't call that comfortable... That's why, without taking considerable steps to stay cool (such as chilled pillow covers and 'hot' water bottles, filled with cold water placed next to us, including no sheets on top, with the windows wide open, we struggle to sleep in this heat.

Methinks you're losing the plot dude, no one said April/May was fun, the issue was (un)comfortable temperatures, So just remind us where you stand on this. I got the impression that too much heat did you in, so what how does that make summer in southern Europe the place to be?
And as for FUN or exciting: while dining in an unfamiliar restaurant would be very nice for a committed foodie, I'd argue that kayaking on an unfamiliar river or arsing round unfamiliar roads on a motorbike would be more FUN and exciting :ner: I can still enjoy a bit of :cool: at the end of the day :)
Shame none of it is going to happen this year :( Just have to save some money and make next year's jolly even better...

Yesh, just like a big jobby.... I can manage just about to keep myself afloat, but I'm no swimmer. It's not something I've ever really done, as I've never been a beach or pool kind of person, and Del's the same.
We both enjoy walking on an empty beach, when the sun's down and it's nice and cool, or even sometimes in the autumn or winter, when it's not raining, as we love the 'bracing' feel of the cold sea air, when otherwise all wrapped up. Plus, Del loves collecting shells and unusual stones to make things with (such are often revealed when the tide's out), but the thought of inhabiting crowded beaches or water, during hot weather, all full of (largely corpulent) oily, lobster-coloured oiks, fills us with horror!:eek:

Plenty of nearly-empty beaches everywhere, here and abroad, if you don't mind being miles from a bar. That's the deal-breaker for your average 'oik'.

Methinks you're losing the plot dude, no one said April/May was fun, the issue was (un)comfortable temperatures, So just remind us where you stand on this. I got the impression that too much heat did you in, so what how does that make summer in southern Europe the place to be?

Heat depends on where you go, and TBH, I'd be just as happy in northern Europe. The key is to be away enjoying different surroundings (and authentic foreign food), and ideally, but not essentially, for it to be warm enough to be able to eat comfortably outside (in the shade) at a nice restaurant. And in, say, France or Italy, that would be better facilitated between June and August.
And as for FUN or exciting: while dining in an unfamiliar restaurant would be very nice for a committed foodie, I'd argue that kayaking on an unfamiliar river or arsing round unfamiliar roads on a motorbike would be more FUN and exciting.. I can still enjoy a bit of :cool: at the end of the day...
Lol - you can keep the kayaking, but on the right roads, motorbikes are ALWAYS fun, in ANY weather, or at ANY time of the year!
Shame none of it is going to happen this year :( Just have to save some money and make next year's jolly even better...
We still plan on having a break somewhere in the UK ('virus permitting'), probably around West Wales, as we haven't been out that way yet, but most of our time will be spent in the garden, doing jobs that have badly needed doing and making ourselves evermore self-sufficient:)

Lots of places in the Caribbean where you can have a massive beach all to yourself. On Barbuda you can walk for miles and not see anyone.

As nice as beaches like that are, we'd get bored, especially Del, as she needs to visit places, see some culture/history and shops where I can buy her some new clothes (different from what she can get in the UK)!:D
That's why, unless we're going for a city break somewhere, we'll always take the car, so we can actually get to see some of the country we're visiting (rather than be stuck in a resort) - and that would also apply if/when we ever venture out with of Europe (we'd fly/drive then):cool:

Interesting... That could be cool in its own way, as long as you were going there just for that purpose. My ideal though would be somewhere as close to that as possible, but with a large town nearby, preferably within walking distance [and by that I mean 2 miles or so, as I'd enjoy the exercise], where I could go just for a change of scenery.
We're all different, but no matter how idyllic the beach, I'd get bored just sitting on a sun lounger or a hammock all day, doing hee-haw, only to get up the next day and see/do the same thing all over again. I need some variety. Plus, a MAJOR thing for me when I go abroad anywhere, is to mix with the locals, do what they do/eat what they eat, and not just feel like a tourist:)

I was happy pottering around the garden and having a cold beer in the shade today - although I really miss having a swim in the sea, but never with that many people about (even in "normal" times).

Me neither - I'd be as far away as possible! I simply just don't see the attraction, as whatever benefit there'd be going into the water would be negated by having to plough through huge queues and crowds to get there, then sharing it with them in close proximity!:doh:
Having a nice outdoor space to enjoy at home though with my wife, has been a God send, and is what's kept me sane [or rather reasonably so:eyebrows:] during this lockdown. I'd have been climbing the walls otherwise, as I've never been someone who likes being cooped up inside for long periods - anywhere!

Yes but we only sampled them through the day we were well served on our resorts with live music & a choice of about 7 restaurants in the evening.

Yup, that's why we generally don't do beach holidays. I was talking mainly here in the UK, outside of the tourist season, where lots of beaches near pubs are empty. The attraction for us of a beach is to enjoy the fresh sea air, whilst having a nice walk in a pleasantly deserted space, not to sunbathe or swim amongst crowds, which just isn't our thing.
Actually, one of our nicest recent experiences, in that respect, was on holiday last year on our return from Italy, where we had stopped overnight at a lovely little family-run hotel on the outskirts of Calais, so we could catch an early (less crowded) ferry back to Dover.
Around 9pm, after we'd enjoyed a lovely meal, we walked down to the beach (no more than 1000yds away or so), and had virtually the whole if it to ourselves (this was in the middle of July). It was a pleasantly warm evening, and the beach in question was full of lovely white fluffy sand, beautifully clean, and we had a nice long walk, barefoot right next to the sea, taking in the fresh air, before retiring to the hotel's charming little bar for a night cap.
It was a husband and wife team who owned the hotel, and speaking French pretty well, I got talking to them. We started off with a few beers, then he brought out some brandy he'd made himself from 'behind the counter', lol;) and well, that was it.... He didn't even charge us for it! Just the beers. Don't think we got to bed until 2am, but rather bleary-eyed (just about) managed to catch the boat at 7am!:eek:
It's nice little things like that which for me (and Del) make a holiday:)

Well, Adam... Was just about to go to bed, but after climbing the stairs and feeling the heat hit me (measured at just a tad under 24C), I thought fuck it, I'll relax outside on the lounger in the backyard for a bit instead, with a nice cool beer, and take my laptop with me!:)
So... Just under 20C outside, with a little bit of a breeze... Much better (and fresher). So I'll sit out here until I get sleepier, then brace myself and enter the oven then!:eek:

Packing the beaches on a warm day is really just a UK thing, probably because really warm days are a bit of a novelty for us. Plenty of summers where we only get a handful of them.
I went to Laguna Beach the week after Labor day (second week of September). It was a hot day, not a cloud in the sky, and this massive beach was as deserted as Southport Sands in the middle of winter. I've even got a photo to prove it.
If that had been the UK the beach would have been so packed you wouldn't have been able to get on it. But out there almost every day is glorious weather so they don't feel the need to 'make the most of it.'

Yup, if it was mine, I think I'd definitely use the pool to considerably COOL DOWN from the outside temperature on hot days. That way, it would definitely get used, simply to paddle in, as I'm no swimmer.

Yes but why do folk act like lemmings and flock to the same places all the time? That's what causes the crowds! And why does knowing that they'll encounter such huge crowds not put them off from going there in the first place, like it would you or I?
Take today, for example, if we were in normal times, do you think I'd be taking the car out and driving to the most popular local seaside resorts, simply to encounter the inevitable? Of course not, I'd be heading to more out of the way locations I know from experience are liable to be much less crowded, if indeed crowed at all - and there are plenty of places like that if you know where to look.
It's called using your brain and not simply acting like a sheep!:doh:
