If I was allowed to vote in a Scottish independence referendum I'd vote for Scottish independence too, for no other reason than to never have to listen that Sturgeon woman whinging again. How would that help? Perhaps she wouldn't be whinging, but trumpeting instead. Or maybe the two separate countries would block each other's radio, TV and internet channels, so you wouldn't hear.

Anyway, you can decide not to listen to her, or to anyone else. Just go off grid.

Ha - comments like that just show how bigoted you are! "Anti-English rhetoric": read as Scottish people standing up for themselves, because they no longer wish to be ruled by Westminster, and seeking to obtain what is rightfully theirs!

Only in your tiny, bigoted and jingoistic little mind could such be considered as "Anti-English rhetoric". So if you're not pro-England, you're anti it, eh? What about the middle ground!!??

The middle one

The middle is the bit highlighted!! So what other "middle" are you referring to?

Marco.

Gaz
16-12-2019, 10:23
On the subject of bigots, perhaps you should understand what a word means before you use it

bigot
noun [ C ] disapproving
UK /ˈbɪɡ.ət/ US /ˈbɪɡ.ət/

a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who does not like other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life:

Your recent comments suggest you're pretty intolerant of people with different beliefs to your own

Marco.

Are you being serious?

The highlighted bit is the first option

THERE IS NO MIDDLE ONE

Marco
16-12-2019, 10:26
No, I'm intolerant of people who are outwardly bigots, and which you've just shown yourself up as. The very clear anti-Scottish remarks you made about Sturgeon fit the description of "bigot" you posted perfectly, so you're no longer welcome here.

Marco.

Marco

The highlighted bit is the first option

I'm referring to the contents of the middle of my sentence, which contained the remarks therein. In any case, regardless of that, your "whining" comments about Sturgeon suggest the same, and demonstrate similar intolerance, so it matters not.

Marco I've heard a lot of anti Scottish rhetoric in recent months from many friends where I I live, I'm starting to think we are a truly disunited Kingdom, everything has become so toxic, I have friends who are very far left who feel so bitter, some Scottish friends who are also very bitter.

I can't see how we can unite again with a shift away from the dup in Northern Ireland going on also.

What about the next labour leader? Long Bailey, Thornbury and Rayner would be disastrous IMHO.
Nandy or Phillips would be my choice though I'd prefer Cooper but she's got no chance? Starmer would be good but no GE winner.

Lol - I don't have a 'weight problem'. I'm not the 'ideal' weight for my height (but am pretty muscular, especially my arms and legs), but I don't believe in 'ideals', nor treat the results of BMI readings as 'Gospel', as much like most of these things, they're too black and white and simply don't consider the full picture. I've always been 'big boned,' and was 11lb 6oz when I was born. Both my parents were/are slim. My mum was still a size 10 and 5ft9, when she was 80.

I have a 44" chest and 35" waist, and take a size large (not XL) in most of my clothes. I eat healthily and exercise frequently, and can power walk for miles, and climb many stairs without getting out of breath. My lifestyle isn't compromised in any way by my weight, therefore I don't have a 'weight problem'.

Would I like to lose some weight? Yes, of course - I'm sure most of us would. Would it be beneficial to do so, and improve my health even further? Again, undoubtedly. However, a 'problem' it is not. Anyway, cheers... You've now motivated me to go for an 8-mile walk today, rather than my usual four:thumbsup::D

Marco

Yup, jogging, especially on concrete pavements, is *really* bad for your joints, which you'll pay for when you get older! Anyway, no worries:cool:

Btw, I forgot to add that one of my uncles in his early 70s, the other is in his early 80s, and both are still pretty fit and rarely visit the doctors. Must be all the red wine and olive oil in the Italian diet!:D

But seriously, lack of stress is a big factor too, and fortunately none of my family, whilst although they worked really hard for long hours, especially the older ones back in the day, led the sort of stressful lives you see people living today.

They've also always enjoyed being in long-term happy/loving marriages (producing well-adjusted, successful kids), and so have essentially been happy and contented people throughout their lives (me too), so that also makes a big difference.

Good mental well-being/health is just as important as physical to one's longevity - perhaps more so!:)

They finished their ruby hours ago, then had a big row over the bill. Boris suggested "going Dutch", but Marco felt this was unfair, as Boris had also had a starter and a pudding. So he took the only logical course of action - excused himself, climbed out through the toilet window and legged it. Boris thinks he's still in the bog - what a buffoon!

Marco
17-12-2019, 09:23
Course I can, Adam, it's a free country!:)

And, most importantly, I refuse to become embroiled in a pointless circular debate about it, when people who are unwilling to entertain any notion that challenges their belief system, or cosy view of the world we live in, would simply pooh-pooh any information I presented. Therefore, there's no point in going any further, except by leaving the more curious among us with perhaps something to ponder and investigate further themselves;)

That is ALL I will be saying on that subject.

As for the first one, that's a rather 'interesting' and one-sided way of looking at it, to say the least, but I'm not going to get into that here. When a decision is taken to ban someone, it's final and not up for debate. However, since you're a good guy (good guys are always welcome here) you're welcome to PM me and I'll explain *exactly* why he was banned, which btw isn't permanent. He's out for a month.

As for the second one, it was a parody of a scene from the film Trainspotting, which the 'C' word aside, was actually rather funny, but which the member responsible I believe has now removed, after I asked him to do so.

Now, *that* is as far as I'm willing to discuss such matters on this thread, so from now on, the ONLY acceptable input here will be that in reference to the thread topic, or other matters of a political nature that have been mentioned. Anything else will be removed without further notice. Cheers!

I agree, but on AoS we're very focussed on free (polite/reasonable) speech, and so disinclined to impose such censorship. Banning it outright is simply too draconian.

Therefore, we'll continue allowing such discussions to take place in the hope that people can behave themselves, not allow their prejudices to get the better of their temperament, and most importantly, outright bigotry or racism aside, not become too easily offended by someone's robust, but perfectly politely-worded political views, which challenge their (arguably delicate) sensibilities!;)

I would have thought the Israel/Palestine conflict is at the heart of this thread - or at least the hard left’s historic position on the issue and the long running feud between Corbyn and the UK Jewish community that resurfaced with a vengeance during the election campaign (egged on by the RW media...)

Certainly of far more relevance than the nebulous and long since discredited ‘Jewish Banking Conspiracy’ …. which is little more than a dated and unadulterated anti-semitic trope (as Joe already pointed out)

Sorry, not going there on the last one, for the exact same reasons I gave Adam earlier about the media/BBC thing. Some people only want to believe what they want to believe.

As for your first point, you may well be right, but I know little about it, as I don't study that area of politics. However, it's already been considered by others as one for non-discussion, so probably best left there. Plus the last thing I want is to run the risk of the thread descending into something that's unsavoury, by discussing such a contentious subject.

Therefore, anything posted of that ilk in future will be removed without further warning.

Yes, but I only touched upon it, as part of a wider main point I was making. I didn't intend to focus on that subject. Indeed doing so in my view would achieve nothing positive. This isn't the place for that type of discussion, so let's leave it there.

Rather like giving kids boxes of matches, and telling them they'll be confiscated if they set fire to the house  It saddens me that a well liked and respected member appears to have jumped ship, and doubtless there'll be one or two other casualties as a result of this pointless, irrelevant and divisive thread.

Just my view of course - everyone feel free to continue making folk with opposing views look like numpties (in the nicest politest possible way of course) :)

Marco
18-12-2019, 07:36
I *absolutely* agree with and share your sentiments, Steve, but we've just had a general election, one of the most significant in years, resulting in a worrying future for many non-Tories, and Chris (the OP) felt that he wanted to discuss the outcome, as he was bitterly disappointed and concerned with the result, so what should we have done, just rudely removed the thread and prevented him from doing that?

Sorry, but we're unwilling to impose that level of censorship.

People have to be allowed to express their views on politics and how they think our country or the world is being run, as inevitably that is how these discussions evolve, as openly and honestly as possible, but politely, calmly and rationally - and *crucially* allow others who have diametrically opposed views, some of which may be thorny or controversial and that they strongly disagree with or dislike, to do the same, and be prepared to have their own, often entrenched views and prejudices challenged, without taking it personally.

Or at least if that happens, don't make snap judgements and instead allow the person (or persons concerned) who have offended them the opportunity to explain themselves properly, and *exactly* what they meant, before deciding that they were right and had due cause to part company with them. I'm sorry, but simply doing that regardless and making snap judgements, IMHO, is NOT a rational way to handle things or deal with the points discussed, and doesn't get us anywhere.

It was always known as Concorde both sides of the Channel.

I had the privilege to work on it whilst at BA in the early eighties, awesome aircraft.

When young I worked with the Aeronautical engineer who did some of the major design work on Concorde's wings, he said it was the hardest thing he ever did.

When I worked with him he went on to set up one of the first 3D client server based CAD systems used for modelling Oil rig designs. He also had an aluminium racing catamaran which he designed and put aerofoils on it, just to see if he could go for a sail speed record. My father went on it at Weymouth harbour and said it was frightening as it reached 30+knots but was very hard to steer. A very clever chap.

I worked at Heathrow for a while in the computer department next to the BA servicing area and regularly got to see Concorde up close, a wonderful bit of human engineering.

Was it Ted Talbot? A bit of a genius IMO.

With E if you're French...without the E if you are English

Nope, they were all renamed Concorde.
The one at Aerospace Bristol has an e on the end of it. It is also the aircraft which performed the last Concorde flight.

A mate of mine once told his girlfriend she had a nose like Concorde. She didn't take it very well, but he assured her that he likes Concorde because it's awesome. They weren't together for very long after that.
