View Full Version : Music old and new: languages ancient and modern: The Papal Mass from Cyprus
The Order of Service used at today's Papal Mass in Nicosia today is available online. It will interest liturgists, musicians and linguists. There seem to be elements of the Maronite liturgy included and some
words in Armenian, as well as Latin, Greek and English.
The production of the booklet is a typographical triumph. I was offered ticket for the Mass which took place less than a mile from my home, but I was taking the Service at the United Nations' Chapel.

I like a certain amount of ritual, but somehow, for me, the message seems to get lost in the spectacle..

I see Hebrew, Syrian and Arabic in there as well. As you say, a triumph of the typesetters skill. I have enough trouble typing in English!
On a coupl of visits to Syria I have been to places where Aramaic is still spoken and supported. It was interesting to hear the Lords Prayer recited in Aramaic - the language that Jesus spoke. I heard, in the recitation, elements of what would become modern day Hebrew and Arabic .

I'm not Catholic, but my first wife was, and we saw the last Pope twice in Italy - once at the Vatican and once at his summer residence (Castel Gandolfo - which was much more intimate, we were less than 100ft from him I would estimate) - I couldn't understand what was going on, but I was amazed at how the Italians treated the Pope like he was a popstar - they were genuinely unable to contain themselves in some cases (trendy twenty-something guys crying like babies!) - I've never seen anything like it.
