Nice place to go for a holiday, but wouldn't want to live there. Couldn't stand the continual sun and (often) stifling heat! There's something to be said sometimes for the 'rainy old UK'. It's up to 18C now in Wrexham, still dry and sunny. Currently enjoying lunch and a beer, al fresco:)
Anyway, Malcolm, hope you enjoyed yourself over in Florida:cool:

Love a bit of sun on the old bones then when it gets too much just retire to the air conditioned bar for a cold one or your room for a siesta. Off to Barbados in September, can't wait :)

Don't feel the cold either... And on holiday, I'd be bored out my skull, just sitting on a beach all day, or by a pool in the sun, never mind Del, who in that respect is far worse than me!:eek:
We like to be doing things/exploring new places instead. Plenty of time to park your arse and chill out later in the evening, when it's cooler and you feel that you've actually done something worthwhile with your day!:cool:

Looks great, but I'd want to be know what lies BEHIND that beach, well away from all the tourists, and explore where the locals go, mixing with them and discovering the *real* Barbados... Yeah man :peace::cool: :D

Lol - so you like nice watches? Yeah, that looks more like it - lovely blooms, as you say:)
We also enjoy exploring surrounding towns and villages, and so aren't averse to acquainting ourselves with the local transport system, which in many places abroad can be an experience!:eek:
That's why, depending on where we're going on holiday, we like to fly/drive (hiring a car at the airport when we arrive), which gives you *so* much more freedom, or if it's somewhere in Europe, within driving distance, we'll go in the Brabster.
That'll apply this year when we travel by car to Italy (Tuscany) for 3 weeks, spending 3 days each way on the journey through France and Switzerland - can't wait!:cool:

Lol, I'm sure that Poplar had its charms! Yes, I still have some family in Barga, mainly cousins, as all the old folks have passed away now.

Yeah, my dad knew his gran and granddad well [they were also in the fish & chip shop business], whom he was related to and who both used to stay on he same street as Del and I did in Lanfine Road in Ralston, up in Scotland, before we moved down to North Wales. There's a big 'Barga connection' in nearby Paisley, and of course in Glasgow, too.

Yes, the walled town of Lucca is the nearest large town to Barga, which as you've been, you'll know is beautiful and packed full of history. The cobbled streets, lined with interesting shops and eateries are lovely, and we always visit Lucca when we're in Italy.
Next time, try and get to Barga, as there are fairly regular buses and trains from Lucca, and I can tell you lots of interesting places to visit!
While we're based in Barga this year, we want to get the train to Florence, as Del's only been once years ago, and also visit Bologna, which is the foodie capital of Tuscany. A truly amazing city, which is grossly underrated, compared with the likes of Florence and Milan, and not quite as touristy - more 'real', if you know what I mean?:)
Plus, we also want to visit one of our favourite islands, Elba, which is just stunning, particularly our favourite part, called Capoliveri: https://www.visittuscany.com/en/destinations/capoliveri/

I'd be happy if it could just stay dry today. I need to finish my current job before I go away on Monday so I can get paid up.
Yesterday the heavens opened, I got soaked and so did my power tools. I'm building a 20 metre fence on a busy main road. It has 1.5 metre pavement, and the lorries rushing past at 40mph were making spray like you wouldn't believe. I've got a coat specially for these conditions - it has printed on the back "I had a holiday in Wrexham and all I got was this bloody cagoule" :ner:

It's been raining heavily none-stop here for the last 27 hours. And it's still going. You have these people going on about how water is a precious resource. We should all be millionaires round here then if that's true.

Been raining solidly for the last three days more or less, we had the woodburner on last night and the central heating for an hour.
Wood burner? No, it's not that cold... Ours has been retired for the winter since the beginning of May.
As long as it's 14-15C indoors, we don't need any heating on, which indeed has been the case, although we give the central heating a blast first thing in the morning, just to take a slight chill out the air, then the house is fine for the rest of the day.
Anyway, after nearly 3 days of continually heavy rain (there's been lots of flooding in Wrexham, but we live at the top of a hill), it's much drier this morning, still raining but no where near as heavy, and the sky is brighter, so I think better weather is on the way, but not expecting much in that respect until Sunday!:cool:

How can a Scotsman not be familiar with wet rain?
An umbrella's no use in wet rain because wet rain doesn't drop on you from above, it's all around you, like you are waking through a cloud. There's no defense against it.
I was only in Scotland a week and I saw all types of rain multiple times, including wet rain :scratch:
Yesh, but one way or another, ALL rain is WET!:D
If it's raining (fine or otherwise), and you wear a good, genuinely waterproof jacket (with a hood) and similar trousers, with suitable footwear, you'll NOT get wet!

P.S I'm not a Scotsman. I'm an Italian who was born in Scotland;)
The wettest rain I've ever been caught in was in September 2010. I'd been on an 'Open Doors' visit to Bristol University, and, as I left, it started drizzling. It's about a fifteen-minute walk from the university to our house. After five minutes the rain was sheeting down and after ten minutes I was wetter than I've ever been before or since. I didn't have an umbrella or jacket, and got completely soaked. When I got home I stripped off in the lobby, gathered up my clothes, dumped them in the bath and had a shower to warm myself up. A thunderstorm in Rome in 2014 was a close second, but we were able to take cover in a cafe for the worst part of it.

That's the beauty of having a nice log or coal fire to sit in front of, which would've warmed you up in no time...
One of my favourite memories from childhood, is getting similarly soaked, coming off the school bus and walking home in rain, then as soon as I got in, my mum would have the coal fire going nice and warm, and I'd get stripped off and dry myself in front of it. A very comforting feeling!:)

The visuals of that have made my eyes water.
Has anyone got a nest? I bought one a short time after moving into my flat and I have to say it has surpassed my expectations by a country mile.
It turns off when I'm not in.. It knows my preferred temp when I am in. It has time to temp which means it knows how long it will take to get to your preferred temp (v handy for the morning) It will go to reduced temp during the night and learns just about every pattern you care to throw at it. I rarely rave about things but I don't think I could do without this thing now. I love it

I don't have a NEST. I have a fan heater I bought for tenner from the charity shop. If it's a bit nippy I just put that on for five minutes.
I've also got a big 3.5 kilowatt industrial fan heater, great bit of kit. But if you run it too long the plug welds itself to the socket. So I don't use that no more.

It's a device that controls your central heating via the Web
Does what a hive and other similar devices do but nest were born from Google and do it in a way that I think is ingenious. After wiring everything onto your boiler nest starts learning your habits from the off. It knows when you get up so will make sure your desired temp is there when you wake it knows when you are out so will drop temp to a temp of your choice. You can turn it on, on your home from a night out or holiday break and you can remotely turn it off if you accidentally leave it on.
Its the best home gadget I have invested in and I woyld buy it for double the amount they sell it for currently (£200)

:D Not really allergic, but I did decide to go "off the grid" for the duration of my holiday. I took my phone, but ignored all calls, and still managed to pick up three new jobs to come back to, without even replying to texts! My only "interaction" with the wider world were the three novels I got through on my kindle, plus the latest issue of "Hi Fi News". I always get a copy to read on the outbound flight, never buy it any other time of year.
I should have made more of an effort - I got to see some real odd shapes walking round in their beachwear which I should have photographed, but couldn't be arsed carrying my phone round with me.
Actually managed to get a bit of a tan without even trying. Not the olive skin colour that you Italian dudes enjoy, more like the colour of diarrhoea-soaked white grundies after they've had a 20c cool wash with no detergent. Look out laydees!
Don't really understand this business of reading books on holiday. What is the point of that? You can sit in your own house and read a book, why pay thousands of pounds and travel thousands of miles to do it, the experience is exactly the same. Except for on the plane flight there and back it makes no sense.
Same applies for watching TV. I know some people who load up their ipad things with films to watch while they're away. It's crackers.

I suppose if I committed all my savings to a "big" holiday, I could probably get a fortnight somewhere more interesting every three or four years.
I quite fancy India, but the idea of several hours on their trains, with not much to look at other than interminable bony cows to look at out the window, sounds like a good advert for reading books. And then how long can you look at the Taj Mahal before saying "Right that's that ticked off, what's next on the list?" before getting back on the train? I'm sure even the most exotic/adventurous/spiritually enlightening adventures will have boring bits in between which is where a book might come in handy.
Anyway Mrs. P likes to spend some time on the beach or round the pool, and the novelty of sniggering at some of the sights shoe horned into bikinis and speedos quickly wears off :(

Really? Well the last time I read a book on holiday was back in March - it was 24 degrees and sunny, I was on a lounger beside a swimming pool and the bar was about 30 feet behind me. If you can do that at home, then you must have a superb house!

Well I've got a sun lounger, I could put the electric radiator and the fan heater on at the same time to get the temperature up to standard, and I could fill the fridge with beer. The swimming pool I can't replicate, admittedly, but if you can read and swim at the same time you're a better man than me.
Maybe I don't go away enough but when I do I like to get my money's worth so I deliberately don't read whilst sat on the beach. I might watch a bit of telly in the morning on the first couple of days but only because the time difference means I'm awake at 0500 and breakfast doesn't start being served until 0730.
A couple of late nights and plenty of booze and by day 4 I'm lucky to have woken up before breakfast has finished.
Reading on holiday? Yes, I can do that sometimes, particularly if we're in a city and I'm all 'cultured out', but Del's still insistent on visiting yet *another* art gallery {sigh} lol, or some such, so I'll leave her to it and park myself at a nice/bar cafe, and happily read a book or magazine, whilst enjoying a few beers, or simply sit and 'people watch', until she's finished:cool:
Don't really 'do' beaches abroad, other than for a day visit for a couple of hours, if it's feasible. The thought of just lounging in the sun for hours on end, doing nothing but cooking oneself, fills me with horror, as indeed it would Del. We're not really 'pool people' either... Much prefer being in the countryside in the fresh air, and up some mountains! Or in towns seeing different things/local culture.

On holiday, we like to get to bed reasonably early (no later than midnight), after a nice dinner and walk, so we get a good sleep and are refreshed the next day for an early(ish) breakfast, around 8am, then we're out and about for the rest of the day. Neither of us are big drinkers though, so don't go on holiday just to get pissed....

Yes muggy today and its the first day where its been overcast but muggy warm.
Tha fan heaters have been on standby up until the 24th June which says it all really....6 months into our year and the weather has been generally crap

Yes, it's been clammy and overcast here. Temperature hovering around the 27C mark all day. No sign of the projected thunderstorms and flash floods yet, just a tiny bit of drizzle earlier.
Just started raining here - obviously, I’m barbecuing... does feel like we need a thunderstorm but not complaining as I would rather muggy than freezing my tits off!

Most nights - the kids have "tea"when they get in from school, we have "dinner" after we've got them to bed - so rarely before 9, depending on what I'm cooking. Probably not good, but it is what it is. :)

Yeah, totally understand. Very different from me. I hate eating late at night, as I always feel yucky/lethargic in the morning, so I like to eat dinner/tea no later than 7.30pm - and indeed have my main meal at lunchtime, then something lighter at night. I know you can't do that though, because you're working.
Is there any reason though why you can't have your main meal all together as a family, when the kids get in from school, or not long afterwards? Or are you still at work? If not, a bit of advance preparation, food wise, could facilitate it - and that would be healthier for everyone:)

We do when we can, but it will vary from day to day. Kids have various clubs after school/in the evening - Girl Guides (not me!) Beavers (Don't! :eyebrows:) Piano lessons, football, hockey, drama, dancing - you get the idea - so one or the other of us is running around taking them somewhere most evenings. And both of us have jobs which involve travelling (Sue's down in the New Forest today) so she'll be back late, and the kids will need feeding before its the Girl Guides Crabbing Championship (yes, really!) at Waldringfield;

You have to be creative for "quality time" as other parents will no doubt attest! But in terms of going out just the two of us, very rarely - and to be honest, that's the way we like it - we love going out together as a family and experiencing things together. We're members of the National Trust, English Heritage, Imperial War Museum, RSPB, Suffolk Wildlife (there's probably more) as well as having annual passes to Colchester Zoo, members of the church, various school, guide and scout events, so we're never bored, and they learn so much from all of these institutions. Education isn't just down to going to school.
Whenever Sue and I go out for a meal on our own (if we leave them with a babysitter) we always end up spending the evening talking about them anyway, and worrying if they're all right, so if there's anything to celebrate such as an anniversary (and even Valentines) we all go out together and have a nice meal and family time - and all screens banned!
I don't ever feel knackered really, despite working hard and all of the above - guess I'm lucky I've always had reasonably high energy levels and don't need masses of sleep. And I can't stand doing nothing. When we go on holiday we do obviously have some days when the kids just play in the pool or on the beach but even then we'd ALL rather get out and find local attractions - museums and nature reserves as well as theme parks and fun stuff.
All noted and cool, mate. What's most important is making some nice memories together, as a family, as ultimately that's what you'll treasure most and look back on in future, especially the kids!:)

Just finished dinner :rolleyes:- it was a lovely sunset earlier, and incredibly mild outside barbecuing the chicken. (With a head torch!) Forecast is for a grey day tomorrow but no rain, then three days of lovely sunshine and 27c on Saturday which will work well for the school fete. :)
