Is your power socket on the preamp fused ???
if not ill send you a fuse holder and fuse
Don't rely on a 13 amp fuse in the wall plug, your board wont have any protection and will blow before the fuse does!!!

Gonna have to have a closer look now you've cut the legs off and soldered them in. Check the pic.

If you have a multimeter, have a check of the components around the illuminated LEDs and see where the electricity gets too.

You can check if the led are right way round without taking them out.
Study Oliver's diagram, anode=post and is +
Cathode=anvil and is -
You can see through the led and you should have facing the flat on the board.
It only takes 1 led to be in the wrong way per side to put them out

Quick update !

After a short sojourn at Firebottle Towers for some much needed R&R :) the offspring PCB has had some much needed therapy. The inestimable Dr Bottle diagnosed some latent health issues which were in his opinion, entirely down to bad parenting :spank: *cough*


Apparently some numpty had mixed up a couple of FETs the wrong way :scratch:, no idea who that could have been :hmm:...…..:D

Anyway, said offspring will soon be returned to mater and pater to be put back in it's rightful place!!

Of course my thanks to Dr Bottle for his swift and timely intervention :clap:

I think it is 95% agreed with Steve now, on a slow build basis, he has other far more pressing priorities right now (as I am sure you are aware).

He did offer me one of his previous builds I wanted front panel text/graphics which it didnt have - hence the search for a case

I must have spent at least 8 hours in total just looking at cases. I think I have found one that will work, just waiting on the ok from Steve.

Hi Andyelectronumpty, just a little point make sure the small heatsinks on your rectifiers don't touch each other.

You may have to lean alternative rectifiers a little to achieve this.

How's it sounding?

Well when i turned i on at the start the high trebles lasted a long time , it was almost euphonic. Its smoothed out a lot today with a better balance and mid bass coming out as time has come on. It sounds a lot more " rounded" now and has bedded in a bit. More even across all frequencies.

Slightly different at the moment as the headphone outputs need to bed in aswell, seperate from the power amp ones so not used as much. Very detailed though [emoji6]. I expect it will open up more as it's had about 7 hours play time today, only 53 more to go lol.

I like it a lot though, also and I'm sure you know, there's a real sense of satisfaction having built it.

btw made some interconnects from the valab wire from pre to power amps. Definitely a step up from the Dueland i was using, a very clean sound. So glad it used it in the DCB1 for the hook up wire.

There is a lot of satisfaction knowing that you built it yourself but that doesn't mean you've not got one of the best preamps around imo.

I was sure that someone said earlier that they could be mounted off board on the floor of the case and connected to the board with wire like some have done with the Fets in order to get some heat sinking?

The Fets need to be insulated from the case as they have a metal back to dissipate the heat.

If the rectifiers used have a metal tab then they also need to be insulated. There are rectifiers which are fully plastic encapsulated that don't need extra insulation.

Ok So it's sounding rather nice but still a bit of burning in to do:) . The budget attenuator (£20!) sounds fine but is a bit stiff and "clunky" to use as well as having only 23 steps.

I would like to replace it at some stage with a better quality item that is nicer to use which means either a Khozmo or Acoustic Dimensions item. I think the AD item is more likely to be bought at the moment looking at prices etc.

The AD Attenuators come in 10 or 100k spec, looking on the DIY site they recommend a 20K pot for the board so I'm thinking the 10K is nearest to this. Any potential issues with getting this one?

Oloiva, as you look at the pot with the spindle towards you, of the two sets of three tabs at the top, the left hand is +ve in, the middle is +ve wiper out, and the right hand earth (-ve.).

Well, whether you have or not, how's it sound?

Clear as a bell. More detail and better treble response but with no loss of bass there. Very noticable to the Valab SA i was using before and that sounded pretty good to my ears , it also used smd resistors so was similar in that respect as a comparison. Better quality all round and nicer feel to use in comparison, smoother action a lot less clunky and more -41 steps in attenuation. Noticable upgrade all round and better for it :)

Never heard a Khozmo so don't know how that compares.

Thanks I'm very pleased all round with it so all good. Wondering what next with it. I see HiFi collective now have 0.5 watt silver tants .... mmnmm lol
