Hi-fi recommendations for your worst enemy!

OK, so let's say you're the office guru in these kinds of things, and that person who drives you insane asks you for system advice. What's the worst sounding system you possibly think of that could pass for a real, functioning hifi? I'll start the bidding with a $39 Memorex DVD/CD player (after all, they all sound the same, right?), an Insignia (Best Buy house brand) receiver, and a pair of Bose Accoustimass 5 speakers -- that should induce at least a minor migraine...

I don't know if they have Best buy or white van stereo con men in the UK but I'm sure they get it.

I think you miss the point. If you _really_ hate them and they _really_ need your advice, make sure they end up spending $10k+ on something that sounds hideous.

Oh, that's a great point! Maybe some decent enough gear, just pricey and horribly mismatched? How about one of those cheap USB turntables running through Crown pro gear driving Wilson WATTS or something?

That's definitely the trick! The kind of stuff that let's them show off when they're boring people with which bits they've got, but sounds shite when it's all plugged in :)

To be honest though I wonder if the days of the 'uninterested hi-fi bore' have passed? I mean as far as most people out there are concerned, they couldn't care less about hi-fi, let alone be impressed by the names and price-list! These day's it's all about how big / expensive / discounted the plasma or LCD TV is!

Just get him to but a cd player... Then show him that episode of tomorow world where the guy puts hunny on it but cut it short before it gets washed off.... Of course that would require him to be stuck in a 1970's time warp... ... It's a shame Andre left ;)

I would tell him all about the wonders of MP3 and point him towards those toy speakers with built in dac and amps.

Or tell him he needs a powerful valve power amp (if I wanted him to go bankrupt replacing valves - or his house to burn down ;)).
