spotted this on ebay,it appears to be identical to the tts-8000,for under a tenner its worth a punt and might get someone out the shit in the future.

I've just put mains lamp on the strobe markings, and its way off stable. Is it generating its own (independent) flash for the platter?

Mines 100v, but still running off 50hz

As far as I’m concerned there is only one way of defining turntable speed consistency and that is by using the algorithm Paul R (Ruggles) of pfm offers (has designed). This was capable of showing the cogging of the recording lathe in the test record used when I measured my own deck and is far beyond simple wow and flutter measurement.

Background, I'm considering buying Keystrobe for my Garrard 301 (independent frequency locked light source), I normally use mains powered lamp to read the strobe on the platter, its near enough for my clothears.

As the Sony is next to the Garrard, I shone the light on the platter to find the markings running fast on the mains lamp, but rock solid off the inbuilt light.

I was wondering if the Sony had its own frequency generator for the strobe?

Off to put Garrard platter on Sony

Edit, Sony and Garrard platters aren't synchronised

The Independent Strobe Light in the Link, is close to Half the price of the Keystrobe.
If it is suitable it will be a few ££'s saved.

Hi Mark
I have a TTS under the knife as you know, when it is done, if you wish, we can cross paths and you can give it a audition.
I can pass on the Phonotherm as well.
I'm very domestically busy at present, so it will be in the New Year hopefully before Easter.

today i started!
1st thing to make was a veneer press to get the plinth top veneer nice and flat and to glue up the side layers of mu25 ply.

Do I see two small blue trim pots in the upper right of your PCB? Are you going to replace all the greens caps as well on the PCB? You'll be matching resistors next to 0.001% tolerance (just like on my paradise) next!!!!!

A bit more work done yesterday,
my veneer press is earning its keep, having glued up the 2 beech mu25 boards i then glued them to the panzerholz top board. The mu25 was easy,i just used pva adhesive, the panzerholz being resin/veneer needed epoxy resin, for this i used the whest epoxy system.

Here they are in the press,

https://i.postimg.cc/WbJgR1TH/IMG-3775.jpg

I shall profile the boards to shape at work tomorrow, then i can turn my attention to the top veneer first then the sides.
This is the cocobolo veneer i will use for the top of the plinth, its a shame that most of it will be removed when i route out the hole for the turntable chasis.
Both sheets are taped up and being flatterned in the press.
Again i will use epoxy for the adhesive.

These trim pots might have gone off spec. It might be worthwhile checking to see how accurate they are and maybe changing them for something with a greater degree of accuracy. I did something similar with the trim pots on the Paradise phonostage and manage to get voltage accuracy to within 0.001mv. There might be something similar on some of the american sites which supply Military spec components.

Hi Jamie
With the Lamination of Panzerholz and MU24/ Duplex, the waste material from the Cut out would make a very desirable core material for a Standalone Tonearm Pod.
I had just recently offered a friend who makes standalone Tonearm Pods, a cut off, when it is available, from my 75mm thickness Permali, for the same task as I will outline.

I could see a 100mm Diameter Billet sandwiched between a Phosphor Bronze or Steel Base.
The Top Plate could be made of Ebony, Corian, Delrin or even the naked Panzerholz,
I have no doubts there would be a very pleasing attenuation on a standalone Tonearm, if mounted into a combination of these types of materials.
Either way, you have done the hard work, so the last bit of the exercise would be relatively easy to complete.
I'm sure a few will express a interest in such a device for the opportunities it can offer to try other arms out on a deck, or to overcome the restrictions of a plinth that can only take one Tonearm.

cheers antonio,me too:)

some more progress made yesterday.
first job was to profile the final shape of the plinth,as you can see the veneer press has come up trumps again!
all boards and veneer pressed tightly with no gaps and a very small glue line.
https://i.postimg.cc/gjcK3Tnh/IMG-3785.jpg

once the finished size was routed it was back home to lay the veneer, ive not done any veneering in years,i used to do it on a daily basis,i was a little nervous but ive still got the touch! lol

https://i.postimg.cc/pLMHxf7j/IMG-3788.jpg

the adhesive used to bond the veneer to the panzerholz ground was whest epoxy, very easy to use and no creep of the veneer joints.
it turned out better than i could have hoped for,no gap in the joint and and nice and flat.

the next job on the list is to do the cut out for the tt and then veneer the sides.

https://i.postimg.cc/WprVyYYV/IMG-3781.jpg

heres a couple of pics with the veneer dampened with meths to give an indication of the colour .hmmm tasty :)

Nah, no need at all.

That plinth is gonna take some resonance before it gets to the arm, it's a beast lol!!

Plus, think of all the aggro of setting it up. No no, no way.

JohnG
08-12-2019, 13:09
Hardwired into the Panzerholz will offer a great performance.
If you want to put a film of another material under the Tonearm at a later date,
it will only serve as a tweak to the attenuation, I can't see a Tonearm Board of any type improving on the Top Layer on the Plinth you will fastening to, and the mechanical coupling between Spindle and Tonearm will not be compromised if all set into a slab of Panzerholz.
Trying some different materials under the Tenuto, can have a interesting effect on the Attenuation, again with the potential for offering the final fine tune to ones ear.
Once you're very familiar with the new sound on offer, a investigation into what can be done might prove a interesting experience.
You have the introduction of a New Plinth and Thrust Pad to come to terms with, so this will take time to assess, as well as the rebuilt Kb will still need to be run in, it will find its own when close to 150hrs of usage.

DiveDeepDog
08-12-2019, 13:23
I go the other way, IMO, the energy from the deck will go across the first layer of Panzer, and guess where, straight into the arm. Not so bad with TTS /SP10 which are inherently quiet.*
It leads to questions of wether to fit the deck onto rubber/sorbothane, but then why bother with 20KGs of plinth? All very interesting and look forward to the outcome.

*Most of my work is with Idlers, they emit far more energy than these DD's.

I did mine out of necessity, only had 2 pieces of Beech ply, and wanted the height. Cut the outside off, and stuck it underneath.

Bentonite?

Bentonite clay= kitty litter.

Added to resin mix. There was some chatter about it on forums a few years ago, I think its at the heart of Cusworth plinths?
Always interested in trying new methods, and this build needed a filler. I could have built solid top and bottom, with air void, but I believe a bit of mass helps.

I haven't heard the Sony in anything else, so can't comment on it vs anything else, its suitably heavy though ;)

I haven't looked at this thread for a while and expected it to be finished. On the subject of arm mounting, on my DP80 I made a 25mm aluminium sub plinth with an arm mounting pod that bolts to the sub plinth.
I've had limited success posting pics but if you are interested I can email you some to peruse and you can post them if you wish. Main plinth with tt locates on the sub plinth with spikes into dimples in the sub plinth. This keeps the plinth and arm pod in position with no chance of knocking out of line. Jeff Spall of audiomods has a DP80 in an aluminium cnc'd plinth with a heavy arm pod that just sits on the rack/table loose. Not likely to move but if someone else is dusting and knocks you're not to know.

a bit more work at the weekend,so i can get a good rounded over top and bottom edge i inlayed some 2.3mm black ebony lines.the actual size when bought is 2.7mm but this looked a bit heavy so i made my rebate 2.3mm.

I`ll share some enhancements etc. i made to my TTS-8000 project. It may be an inspiration to some:

Feet: A bit nostalgic I guess, but I found the Audio Technica AT616 pneumativ feet in Japan. They are produced in the same timeframe as the Sony, and is is highly regarded by audiophiles in Japan and the US. If you come across a pair of four they can handle 60 Kg.

Lamps: Not directly related, but i discovered that the transformers of my Ikea Led lamps i used at the turntable, generated hum on my electric grid. I found these battery driven BBQ lamps on Amazon. The light itself is rather "Cold" but they do the job without hum:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F7RO4YS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Last but not least. After having mounting the Reed 2A i discovered that the Original lid was too low ! www.plasticonline.co.uk did an excellent job of producing a new lid after my specification. Their packaging is also excellent - I now have bubblewrap for the next few years ;-)

All in all I am extremely pleased with my TTS-8000. Right now my considerations are on having Mangna Audio produce some brass/ wood risers for my tonearms instead of the ones of light wood i had made here i DK.

I am still thrilled with my TTS-8000, and would never had thought of one, if not for the great posts here on AOS. A pic of my pride:

Regarding the feet, what are the size of the bolts?

The AT616 don't have bolts. The table is put on top of these four feet, and is thereafter "floating" on compressed air. "Floating" is a big word here with the tables weight of 40 kg - it doesn't move at all ;-)

I was hoping to replicate the big TTS 8000 plinth I think TB 2000. I’m sure Sony knew what they were doing when they made the TT in the first place - the problem is the TB 2000 plinth never comes up for sale

Actually they do. In the last two years I have seen 4 TB-2000 for sale: One in Sweden fully equipped with a table and two Sony tonearms - it went fast for app. 3000 GBP. The Insane priced in Germany is still there. Two TB-2000 went on sale in Japan: The one I got together with a table, and lastly a TB-2000 without table four months ago - that went within 4 hours for app 550 GBP.

So they are out there if you keep your eyes open - Asia is the best place to find them. The unofficial "Resinamic Sound" plinth also of SBMC also comes up once and a while (I also have one of these). They are for one Tonearm, but as beautiful as the official Sony TB-1000 for one Tonearm.

So keep looking and enjoy either the hunt, or the DIY approach ;-)

Without the feet: 61 x 55 x 9 cm. The plinth consists of:

Top of SMBC with two seperate armboards made out of some kind of heavy metal. I am pretty sure it is a mixture of led and ? The reason why I suspect led is part of the armboards is due to its colour, but they are more solid than 100 % led. They weight each app. 1.5 kg.

Bottom made of wood. In-between the top and bottom there are four big rubber "balls" which separates the two pieces.

im only using water to raise the grain al,it swells the fibres of the wood so you can cut them off with the next sanding stage. it makes for a smoother finish.

Used to use water too. Maybe a stopper at end

im only using water to raise the grain al,it swells the fibres of the wood so you can cut them off with the next sanding stage. it makes for a smoother finish.i might try that, I built a guitar with a walnut body and sprayed it with acrylic laquer but it's not smooth. The alternative at this stage would probably be to sand the acrylic and spray it again.

ive always done this paul, most of my sanding in the past has been from 120 grit down to 320,i would typically do it twice, once after the first sanding and then again before the final one. there were a lot of applications after using water,ie chemical and water stains as well as the bleaching process so thats why i did it twice to be sure.

Dare I mention this again 50/50 sanding sealer and thinners , works wonders for me with all the timbers I use when woodturning ,
The last bowl I turned was this , sanded 120 up to 400 sanding sealer , de nib then Briwax

The surface is like glass :eyebrows:

you can mention it as many times as you like al lol
are methods differ thats all,i dont use sanding sealer as a finish its full of wax which is why it looks cloudy and clogs the sandpaper.
horses for courses just like hifi.

lovely bowl!

They look great - how do they adjust? Is it two separate pieces of wood?

That is a nice looking piece of wood.
Coincidentally, I am looking for a similar sized block myself in wood or granite (black colour) to go under my recently purchased Bow ZZ8 CD as well as under two 1210 Mike New turntables.

I think I need something like 50 cm long and 40 cm wide , from which company did you get this lovely piece of wood from and if you don't mind how much was it, can't spend a fortune alas!

Mark

this weekends job has been to drill the holes for the tonearm, ive done the bodying up with the french polish and its had a week to harden up.
now the tonearm holes are done i can give it a final french polish then flatten back and compound.

i paid close attention to getting the mounting distance bang on,i used a strip of ply with 2 holes drilled to 225mm centers,1 hole goes over the spindle and the other holds a pencil,an arch was drawn and after deciding where the tonearm was going to sit i drilled a 22mm hole.
next i turned on the lathe a piece of round steel bar,22mm at one end and 19mm at the other(same o/d as the tonearm tube),the end was turned to leave for want of a better word a nipple with a center dot.

now im ready to drill the 3 holes for the tonearm mounting collar, first i put the round bar through the mounting collar with the 22mm end sticking out the bottom, this centers the collar in the 22mm plinth hole. next i loosen the grub screw on the collar so the round bar drops down through the hole and when its at the same height as the tt spindle i re tightened the collars grub screw to lock the bar in place.
then its just a case of slipping the ply strip back on the spindle and if all went well, which it did the nipple on the round bar sits in the other hole exactly 225mm away from the spindle center.to double check i measured from the spindle to the center dot on the nipple. all went well.

at last i hear you all cry! lol
a tense moment as the needle dropped, has it been worth all the hard graft??
ive not checked alignment yet and i have adjust+ coming soon to check azimuth but my initial thoughts are it seems a wee bit louder in this plinth than the sony,im using a julian bream/john williams album that i know very well and to my ears the attack (if thats the right word?) on the guitar strings is very much more prominent and forceful. the decay on some of the notes especially harmonic ones is very much improved, over all id say there is now more realism to the sound.

so to answer my own question, yes for me its been very much worth the time and effort,im chuffed to bits.the only downer is ive got to strip it back done again to give it a final polish....perhaps it can wait a week :)

I've not updated this thread for a while so here are the latest addition.

I have added a CLD armboard which can be independently adjusted from the plinth.it has bettered the panzerholz armboard imo and lets so much more tiny detail through.the design is marks (YNWaN ) the adjustment idea is mine which came from having a slight bow in the plinth.
