View Full Version : Electric Vehicles - Really?
I've got nothing against the idea of electric propulsion, but you just know they'll bung every kind of complexity in electric cars that they can get away with.
In theory they should be very reliable and durable, but I expect the modern tendency to pare quality to the bone will put paid to that.
Then there's the range and charging times, we still have some way to go there.
(think I'll look around for a nice smelly old eighties diesel Land Rover :))
Exactly - a pile of shit, and completely soulless! And regardless of 'reliable and durable', what about FUN? Remember that word, and what it once felt like behind a wheel?;)
That said, I support your Landy desire - apart from anything else, it would act as a 'FUCK YOU' sign to the controlling authorities!:finger::D

Electric vehicles are doomed to become just disposable 'white goods' like washing machines and dryers. The slightest bit of wear or scruffiness and they'll end up binned!
Indeed, which I *UTTERLY ABHOR*, so you can see why I detest them on so many levels!

We'll reach a point where diesel and petrol fuel sales decline, then you can bet the government will make these fuels harder to obtain or (even) more expensive, just to get non-electric vehicles off the road.
likelihood is treble tax initially. pay as you drive plus fuel tax and road tax for carbon cars is my guess.
then harder to hit emmision targets in mots etc

I expect zero rated tax on electric cars will disappear at some time in the future and drivers will have to fork out. We'll end up back to square one.

think the subsidy was to cross the costs barrier until enough were sold to bring down costs. alas the car companies seem to be increasing prices which negates subsidy. and they are also increasing ace costs so the gap isnt too big. Im guessing brexit will increase costs by quite a bit too.

Sure, but it won't affect us, as neither of us drives a lot now, so a tank of fuel, even in my car (approx £75 with the stuff I use), lasts about 6 weeks, so cost isn't an issue [I can also afford the tax], and I'd simply drive to wherever was necessary to fill up - even if was miles away, as I've got the time!:D

I've driven less than 1000 miles since February. Obviously that will rise a bit when (if) things get back to 'normal', but not vastly.
The most challenging thing about this is getting the infrastructure is place to charge all of these new electric cars.
That is going to cost quite a bit.

Exactly, so fuel costs for the likes of us are a non-issue:)
And if/once things get back to some form of normal, and we take the car on holiday, for a long drive, I'll stump up then.
They'll need to drag me kicking and screaming (probably at gunpoint too, lol) before I give up driving the cars *I* want to drive!!!:trust:

I suspect we'll end up even worse off. There will be a massive shortfall in revenue due to lack of fuel sales, which the govt will have to claw back somehow. No doubt they will bring in per miles travelled charges, which will have a huge impact on the likes of me who works on sites all over the UK.

Unfortunately, spare parts for them will probably become unobtainable.
i wouldnt mind the change if it were proven to make a significant difference to climate change, but it appears that it mostly just moves the issue around a bit. this country's biggest polluter that way is home heating systems.
Unfortunately, spare parts for them will probably become unobtainable.
Not the case now though with a lot of cars that have not been made since the 1970s. MG for example. If there's a demand then the parts get made.

Diesel is by far the worst for pollution and damage to health. Really they should have been banned on non-commercial vehicles 30 years ago,

It's different with 'classic' cars. Modern cars are far more complex and parts stock is limited even for current models. I can't see companies setting up to remake things like engine management systems and elaborate mechanical bits like multi-ratio auto gearboxes. You certainly couldn't do it at a sane price, assuming the original maker would licence it. It might happen for prestige cars, but not for anything 'normal'.
eu6 and 7 diesel vehicles are pretty clean now. AdBlue and diesel particulate filters, filter out the soot particulates and nitrogen oxides.

It's commercial diesel use that needs dealing with.

True, but who in 1970 would have predicted they will still be making parts for an MGB in 2020?
I was thinking about prestige cars though, not the mass-market stuff. No-one's going to want a Nissan Leaf or anything like that in 20 years time. But imagine what price a 911 will go to once there are no more new ones.

I have no problem *whatsoever* with that angle on matters, but the process should be VOLUNTARY, such as anything else of a similar nature in a free country! I simply don't like being forced to do what I don't want to do, or own what I don't want to own.
Therefore instead, they should be offering INCENTIVES for folks to switch to electric, should THEY wish do so, such as discounts on road tax and insurance, and allow the 'electronic revolution' to occur more seamlessly and naturally [as your average Joe Bloggs will simply go with whatever is cheapest, so in reality the transformation would occur pretty quickly through CONSENT], rather than ENFORCING draconian bans, which simply makes many people like me just dig our heels in (out of spite in the end, if nothing else), and create unnecessary non-compliance.

I think that if it's possible for you to work from home, it should be made law that you do so. That would clear a fair amount of traffic from the roads and ease the burden on public transport and hence reduce pollution.
I think that if it's possible for you to work from home, it should be made law that you do so.
Sorry mate, I understand your thinking, but I wouldn't agree with such being made law. If it was done, it should be incentivised and encouraged, not forced, much like I've outlined with electric cars, as I dislike imposing control upon people's lives like that.
Quite simply, if folk don't like working from home, and feel isolated from human contact as a result, it's very bad for mental health, especially for some who's only contact with others is at work. And TBH, in this digital age, and with obesity on the rise, we need to get folks off their fat backsides and MOVING more, and less stuck behind their bloody screens!;)
So... ONLY if you are WILLING AND able to work from home, should you do so. *Encouraged*, by all means, but never forced.
If the goal is to reduce the amount of cars on roads, then far better to encourage/incentivise car sharing, but if you're going to introduce bans, then ban the ownership of any more than two cars per household. Frankly, it's bloody ridiculous that every occupant thinks that they're 'entitled' to a car each, when with some compromise and organisation they could be shared, or public transport used instead.
Teenage 'Wee Johnny' or 'Little Susie', therefore, simply don't need a car each to galavant around the place on 'a jolly' - they could share each other's or their parents cars instead, with a rota worked out of who gets to use them and when. Moreover, their parents don't need to own more than one car each either!!
I'd also ban all farm vehicles from using main roads during rush hour, and huge 4x4 SUVs from school runs! Plus make driving tests harder to pass, as they've largely always been a joke and simply allow too many incompetent idiots through. The cumulative effect of all of that would soon reduce the amount of cars and congestion on our roads!:trust:
Marco.

Yep, don't see why people would want to spend every day commuting in traffic jams or packed public transport if they didn't have to, but yes incentivising it would work also.
Many businesses like their pound of flesh, and managers dont feel important if there are no folk bowing to them, or and there to be mistreated;)
Ali Tait
19-11-2020, 14:22
That's very true Grant. It there are to be incentives, they need to work both ways so people can't be forced to go in.
But, there are always twats in life, wherever you go and whatever you do.
Yep, don't see why people would want to spend every day commuting in traffic jams or packed public transport if they didn't have to, but yes incentivising it would work also.
Sure, but not everyone lives or works in big towns or cities, so negotiating traffic jams, whilst undoubtedly common, isn't a given. For example, if I was still working now, I could easily get around Wrexham and its environs, at any time of the day, and encounter little traffic congestion - and in Scotland that would also apply to almost anywhere outside of the central belt.
But yes, incentivising is the best way of gaining compliance towards anything - the carrot not the stick!
So... If you want to encourage folks to work from home, employers need to pay them the extra costs of heating, electricity, water, etc, so that people are not out of pocket in any way - and most importantly just because they're at home, don't impose extra demands upon them and expect them to be at your beck and call at all hours of the night!
If it's a 9-5pm office job normally, then your right to 'bother' them ends at 5pm, until 9am the following day, unless overtime is paid!
Folks simply 'accept' all sorts of shit too easily these says from their employers and allow themselves to be bullied... I'd be a fucking nightmare, because I'm way too militant and simply wouldn't tolerate being treated as a glorified slave, which is one of the reasons I rejected the idea of anyone being my boss, from 1996 onwards (as I could see how things were going even back then) - and started my own business!
If you can, opt out of the rat race before you crash and burn, and decide your own destiny, as it's a race you'll never win...
Marco.
Many businesses like their pound of flesh, and managers dont feel important if there are no folk bowing to them, or and there to be mistreated;)

Not necessarily, if they're willing to CHANGE their ways, and if necessary re-evaluate their 'aspirations', live more frugally and within their means, have less unnecessary material possessions and MINIMISE debt. Where there's a WILL, mate, there's always a way! Oh, and don't have more kids than THEY (not the state) can *comfortably* fund;)
The problem these days is that folks a) don't plan their lives properly or early enough, if they're able to, thus influencing their future in a positive way, and instead end up trapped by commitments when it's all too late, and b) want WAY too much, based on what they're realistically capable of earning.
If that was all properly addressed, from day one, it would put THEM in more control of their lives [debt is often what places the biggest noose around your neck and limits freedom], thus be less susceptible to becoming 'an employer's bitch', and put themselves in a much better position of leaving any job that was simply causing them too much grief.

life doesnt always work out as planned. just coz yours did doesnt mean its the usual. lots of things can and often do go wrong.
Of course - *but* you can minimise the likelihood of that if (to borrow a popular Scottish phrase) you learn to 'screw the nut', early doors:)
As you say though, much easier said than done, but some folks simply aren't interested in trying to do the right things. All they're interested in is what they WANT [and *NOW*], rather than what they can realistically have!

Yeah it's a shame the scorecard ladies had to go - a move no doubt driven by the flat-chested monkey boot-wearing pc brigade, and a vocal minority who think it's only fair that attractive young blokes should be given that job too. It's a shame because I would love one.
One thing I will say is I know that well made, high performance scooters are FAR safer than the rental jobbies.
Why? Because they are much better made, have suspension and pneumatic tyres, have enough performance to get you out of trouble and have larger wheels and much better brakes.
That said, you mustn't abuse the power and travel at speeds appropriate to your level of bodily protection.
They are things of addiction and that can't be appreciated unless you experience it.
I was a very good skateboarder in my youth so my angle is probably different to most. I still retain excellent balance and very decent physical agility even at my age. I probably feel far safer than most would on a scooter.
What's the road legality situation with them Justin?
Rental legal, ownership illegal on road. That'll change, though.
I use mine off road 95% of the time. Easy round here.

Opera, reading (aloud), debate, and, at the moment, agitating against the Police State and against the Westmonster Gang's disposition to accrue powers to themselves at the expense of our liberty and well-being. My father loved three things in life: pussy (I am one of 17 currently acknowledged to have derived from his teeming loins), football, and cars. In respect to football and motor cars, I cut a sorry figure in his eyes, caring for neither, but was not a complete loss on the first and chief of his delights.

Electric scooters will very soon be road-legal, but with strict limitations. From July 4 2020, it will be legal to ride a scooter on roads, cycle paths and cycle lanes, but only if it's part of a hire scheme. If you own an electric scooter yourself, it will be illegal to ride it anywhere except private land, with permission from the land-owner.
