my favorite jazz album at the moment and maybe all time js stanley turrentine Blue Hour, just listen to hs playing the way he players the blues is second to none in my opinion, relax, sit back and enjoy....

Oh yes !!!!!!!

Love this.

I know some folks who find this too slow and laid back. Not for me.

Turrentine always feels as if he is playing the blues, even when he isnt. His sound and blues feel are just fantastic.

Wonderful version of this old standard.

+1 Big fan of Turrentine. If you don't already know it, have a listen to his Ballads album -- nice blues feel as well, very laid back and mellow. Wonderful playing.

That's my favourite lp of all time!! Well in the top 100 or so
I wouldn't call it a Blues lp in the traditional sense but certainly blues based jazz.
Top record!

Midnight Blue is on deck for playing tonight :) (haven't heard it as yet). Turrentine made many albums, of which we only have two -- Ballads and T-Time (both excellent). Thanks for the head's up on Blue Hour and Midnight Blue. Looking forward to discovering those.

One of my all-time favourites:

Roy Hargrove, Approaching Standards. This is Hargrove in his early days. Wonderful playing. We had the pleasure of seeing him live at the Toronto Jazz Festival a few years ago -- just an outstanding artist. And his quintet was stellar. They brought the house down!

I met him, just before he died.

My wife and I were in New York and she wanted some shopping time. So, I went to a sax shop to have a look around.

He was there, with his black lacquer Selmer tenor. I remember him sitting down, trying out different mouthpieces. It was fantastic to hear that sound so close up. What a thrill.

We flew back just a few days later and I found out that he had died, whilst we were travelling.

Ah yes fully agree. Lovely album. Also played it (via Tidal) a few times since I saw it being released in early Feb.

But I'm confused what album cover you are showing. Tidal is showing a different cover as below. I think I prefer Tidal's to yours. :eyebrows:

Mississippi John Hurt left behind a legacy unique in the annals of the blues, and not just in terms of music. A humble, hard-working man who never sought fame or fortune from his music, and who conducted his life in an honest and honorable manner, he also avoided the troubles that afflicted the lives of many of his more tragic fellow musicians. He was a pure musician, playing for himself and the smallest possible number of listeners, developing his guitar technique and singing style to please nobody but himself; and he suddenly found himself with a huge following, precisely because of his unique style. Unlike contemporaries such as Skip James, he felt no bitterness over his late-in-life mass success, and as a result continued to please and win over new listeners with his recordings until virtually the last weeks of his life. Nothing he ever recorded was less than inspired, and most of it was superb.(excerpt from his obituary)

There is so much great music by Jarrett, mostly his trio stuff is excellent if not a bit samey but quality
Stand outs imho are "Standards" vol 1&2
He does do the mosquito murmur in the background which annoys some but I like it.
TBH I avoid anything with Jan Garbarek, although the darling of ECM, imho he's ruined so many potentially good
Recordings with that horrid cat like screech that passes out his of horn.

Interesting, thanks. I currently have on loan about 50 odd jazz albums, most of which are on the ECM label. I'm working my way through them; there are a fair number of Jan Garbarek titles amongst them - might now be inclined to leave them towards the end of the playlist [emoji846]

Nicely chilled out, but also a little 'challenging' in parts

Marco.

Don't know this at all Marco, i'll check it out. Flat White for me ..+ an extra shot.

I think you'll like it Adam, it's not too 'trad', but with a nice injection of 'avant-garde' in places :)

Meanwhile, I've plucked this little gem from the dusty archives of my hard-drives:

It's going down rather well, as I do some housework!:D

Amazing. I just spun this up and was floored by the open wide sound so I looked deeper. This is a re-performance of the originals. Zenph Studios digitised the original recordings and then played it back via a solenoid driven Yamaha Grand. Zenph claim to be able to pick up from the original recording how exactly the keys were hit and released as well as Art's use of pedals. They also fixed a pitch error that was apparently evident on the source recording.

see: https://jazztimes.com/columns/cadenza/player-piano-man/

Now off to listen to some more stuff Zenph has done. For example Bach Goldberg Variations played by Glen Gould.

So far as I can make out Zenph only did 4 albums (Art Tatum, Oscar P, Gould's Bach and Various Rachmaninoff pieces) as now they seem to have been swallowed up by Steinway who seemingly use the same tech in their Spirio self playing piano that sells for $$$$.

Listening to the Rachmaninoff currently which is lovely - lots of delicacy.

And now for something rather different from my usual recommendations:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/Bitches_brew.jpg

Miles Davis, Bitches Brew. Very experimental and ground-breaking, basically the first jazz-rock album. If you're in the mood to just let the music carry you away for a while, sit back, relax and follow it, you may find it's quite brilliant. Track 1, Pharoah's Dance, was written by Joe Zawinul of Weather Report fame -- very distinctive signature sound there.

Bought my copy back in 1973 - but these days I only play the one side: 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down'.

It was Miles's attempt to earn a lot more money by appealing to a wider and younger audience than those of the traditional jazz club. The sleeve notes are IMO, a load of rambling incomprehensible nonsense. However the cover artwork more than makes up for it; from the same artist who did the cover artwork for Santana's 'Abraxas'.

I saw Miles play at the Concertegebouw in Amsterdam in 1982. It was an excellent, and memorable concert. Was very impressed by the way Miles let the players have their solo turn; he wasn't the egotist I was fearing.

Adam, we have similar taste -- that album is already in my collection :). And yes, totally agree that this is an outstanding recording. One of his best, if not the best. I think there's also a Saturday session, which I don't yet have. He had such a delicate touch on the keyboard, quite unique and distinctive. By contrast, I listened to an Oscar Peterson recording last night, and they couldn't be more different in style - some pretty thunderous passages coming out of the speakers. Fun stuff!

My mistake -- there was no Saturday night session...just checked Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Complete_Village_Vanguard_Recordings,_1961. All sessions were recorded on the Sunday, including an afternoon session, hence my confusion. It also turns out that the Waltz for Debby recording came out of these very same sessions, which I didn't know.

I will definitely check out that Shelly Manne album! That's gotta be a great pairing with Evans. Thanks for the head's up on that. I just discovered Manne a couple of years ago, and he quickly became a favourite. Can't sit still listening to him. We have two of his Live at the Blackhawk recordings, and really need to get the other two in the set. Outstanding musician!

Adam, since you're into piano jazz, are you familiar with Marian McPartland? She also has a wonderful touch on the keyboard. And check out her radio show on NPR, if you've not already tuned in, called Piano Jazz, naturally :)

https://www.npr.org/series/15773266/marian-mcpartland-s-piano-jazz

Click the Archive link at the top right to go to shows back to 2007. A wonderful show, and some great artists have been on.

Glad you like it Adam. Marian McPartland is a gem, the grand dame of jazz piano as she's known around here.

BTW, I listened to Bill Evans' On Green Dolphin Street last night -- another great album from him. Recorded 1959 but not released until 1975. A little more up-tempo than some of his stuff. The title track is wonderful.

Apparently Champion Jack decided to make the UK his home after the immigration officer addressed him as "Sir".

Don’t laugh – I have a soft spot for British Blues: Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown, John Mayall, they all got me started with my love of the Blues. So it’s a bit of a nostalgic moment for me.

I think it was Sonny Boy Williamson, who on being asked what he thought of the British Blues interest of the ‘60s, replied “These white boys want to play blues so badly – and boy do they!”. Well he was right, but it is exactly their enthusiasm I admire – and anyway I like Stan Webb’s guitar playing.

Here in Toronto we are very lucky to have a 24/7 local jazz FM radio station, 91.1 (Jazz.fm on the web if you want to stream live). Every Saturday they broadcast Jamie Cullum's BBC 2 show which I enjoy listening to. Well this weekend Cullum played this track, Nancy Wilson singing Ode to Billie Joe, which I just loved:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ubj-mnkgf8

Before he played it, he noted that the arrangement was outstanding, and I would have to agree. The building tension and angst makes for a terrific piece of music.

Nice selection of Blues tracks. :)

I've just found a Kenny G recording - 'Breathless'. Soprano and occasionally alto or tenor saxophone, this is a collection of 'library music': boring, inoffensive, anodyne elevator 'muzak'. The sort of background music that accompanies travel adverts, showing palm trees and sandy beaches etc. The modern day equivalent of "The Potters Wheel". Do people actually listen to this 'pap'?

In 1959, feeling pressured by the unexpected swiftness of his rise to fame, Rollins took a three-year hiatus to focus on perfecting his craft. A resident of the Lower East Side of Manhattan with no private space to practice, he took his saxophone up to the Williamsburg Bridge to practice alone: "I would be up there 15 or 16 hours at a time spring, summer, fall and winter".

Returns with his tour de force!

Great recommendation Andy. And thanks for adding the little background write-up - very insightful. We've got quite a number of Rollins' recordings, but not that one. Looking forward to getting to know it.

Cheers,
Svend

We've been putting this one on more frequently in recent weeks:

Marian McPartland, In My Life. Wonderful album. I can't recall at the moment who the back-up musicians were, but they really shine - some excellent playing, all 'round.

Marco my Man I salute you Sir!! :youtheman:
Digg'in deep fella..
You have inspired me to reach to the 'Top Rack'...(My Mrs leaves the house when I do!)

That is a humdinger of a record.
Doug Carn made a few other records on this label, all worth checking.
This one Featuring The lovely Jean Carn (before changing her name to Jean Carne)
a few years before divorcing Doug and becoming a Soul/Disco diva.

Little B's poem!! Toooon!! (Dee Dee Bridgewater also does a stunning version of Bobby Hutcherson's classic)
The Black Jazz Label is very good, very interesting..Pretty Damn Deep!
Gene Russell, Walter Bishop and Calvin Keys all produced some corkers on Black Jazz

Another label with a similar stance on radical left sided jazz, were Strata East.
Some fantastic music around this period
Boundary pushing, spiritual and real
1973 Nice!

Unfortunately the streaming services haven't dug so deep
In certain genres. Probably on you tube if you want to get the flavor...
