That’s the cheapest you will find the 7 lp set, my wife got me a copy from them 2 years ago for £69.99. There is a 2lp version with 2 cds and a 4 lp version. But the 7 lp is really worth it.

This is Arthur Blake, the blues and ragtime guitarist as opposed to Blake Higgs the calypso guitarist, so we dont get mixed up.

Both are excellent.
Arthur was quite a star in the day. The likes of rev gary davis was influenced by him greatly.

Gregory sings the songs of Nat King Cole, which would be fine as Porter has a lovely voice, but the recording is, IMO, let down by the most syrupy string sound of the London Studio Orchestra. Definitely not to my taste - shame!

First is probably the worst.
Shame as its hard to come by. Still ive done a copy for posterity. Recorded in 50's, jimmy rogers with buds, big and little walter, muddy waters, otis spann etc recorded this after a full session of other stuff..

I saw them about 30 years ago. Probably Queens Hall in Edinburgh, but it may have been Band on the Wall, Manchester.

I just remember being blown away by the variety of music on offer from two players. It was a wonderful experience.

I had not been aware of this previously.

So, my first thought was that he had done something “classical” ish in a church. A La Garbarek.

I know Marsalis has been doing some classical stuff with orchestras etc. I’m not so keen on that !! I feel there are far better classical saxophonists out there than he is. I thought....oops, here we go !! Not going to like this.

So, having checked this out on you tube, I’m really pleased that it isnt that. It’s jazz based.

I like it.

For me, he has one of the best tenor sounds around, and in my view he has THE best soprano sound of anyone, currently.
So it was great to hear both. And he uses the natural reverb/echo of the church to great effect.

This came today, I believe it is it considered a ground breaking album of its time, a tricky listen in parts as all free jazz can be, but on my first listen I think I like it. Its very well recorded and this re-release is excellent. I will give it another go later.

Lovely vibe and lovely solo by sax player michael brecker, who is playing with a more restrained approach than his norm, and a darker sound than normal.

Probably one of the best Jazz/Fusion bands that there is. Well worth a list and 25 albums, a few line up changes but some very well members, Bob Mintzer, Dane Alderson, Russell Ferrante, William Kennedy, Felix Pastorius(ex), Jimmy Haslip(ex), Marc Russo(ex), Marcus Baylor(ex), Ricky Lawson(ex)

This is their first outing and is superb, especially good on MOVL 180gm
