Cod and rosti

Quite nice ice cream. Had to spin the tub in micro for 20 secs so I could make a dent in it. Lol.. But good quality icecream
Gosh, there's been SO much activity on this thread since I was last here - and too much fab food to comment on individually!
But I'll say that I'm lovin' those square sausages, Granty. But sorry, 'cheesy chips' aren't for me!:spew: That's not to say that the chips themselves weren't nice, but cheese on chips...Just NO, NO, NO... Yes, I can hear you, Roy!:D
Anyway... Father's Day lunch earlier, chez-moi. Just some quick snaps [photography not the best], as we were too busy eating and chatting! First up some fillets of pan-fried sea bass, in a fresh lime and butter sauce, with samphire and baby Pimento peppers:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/aagOur.jpg
next up, roast leg of Welsh lamb and gravy [made solely from the meat juices and herbs/garlic], with herby potatoes, seasonal veg, and a courgette and green bean 'sformato':
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/XqL8I3.jpg
And lastly, probably the star of the show, Del's homemade vanilla panna cotta with fresh strawberries and fruit sauce:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/IcWVRK.jpg
That really was scrummy!

Not really a Scottish thing either is it, Granty? At least, when I lived in Scotland there wasn't much love for mushy peas... Even going back to when my old man had chippies, he didn't sell mushy peas, and wasn't asked for them either.
It's a bit like the fish situation, where down here cod is (sadly) the fish of choice in chip shops, whereas (IMO, the much superior haddock), or whiting, is served in Scotland:)
Marco.
Sorry, just catching up but the missing bit isn’t mushy peas, but a pea fritter!

dont be smart..
I think Adam meant it as a joke!;)
Anyway, you never commented on my grub, Granty, or does panna cotta, etc, not do it for you?:D
Guys, thanks. There's been lots of lovely food pics posted here recently, which in real life I'd have happily eaten.
Marco.
Lol, thanks. Surprised you don't like panna cotta, as it contains ingredients I know you like, such as vanilla and cream, and in this case also strawberries!
So what gives, daftee?:hmm:
Have you had a proper one before?
Marco.

Er, no I didn't. I love pea fritters.
What's the issue here - have I innocently stumbled onto a controversial topic?
I think Grant thought you were taking the piss about the Scots liking everything fried (Mars Bars, etc, hence pea fritters), which is a bit of a myth, as the English are just as bad!:D
Anyway, I thought you were a panna cotta fan?;)

Ah, OK! But, no, not the case - I love a pea fritter with fish & chips.
As to panna cotta, I don't mind it but wouldn't say its a particular favourite. Ursula hates it, describing it as "oversweetened slime"!!
Hake (new pots from the ninja)

I like hake, really tasty, meaty fish. Good Indian restaurants make tandoori fish, served sizzling with spicy veg.

Lol - each to his or her own! I've never had a pea fritter, but I like peas, so I guess the concept has possible merit. I'm not a big fried food person in general though, so fritters, chips, etc. are rarely on my radar..
Granty, wotcha been munching recently? You've gone a bit quiet, mate. Hope you're ok?:)

I'm English and I've never seen anyone here eating fried chocolate of any type, and it is not a myth about fried mars bars ect. A grand Scottish dish I would love to try though is a 'stoner'.

Hi David,
I meant in terms of a love of fried food in general, which in my experience the English have as much as the Scots - indeed Brits overall in general. I was born in Scotland (Glasgow), but my parents and my whole culture is Italian, and we don't eat much fried food, cooked breakfasts, chips, pies, pastry (savoury or sweet), etc, like British folks do:)
And when I lived in Glasgow, for over 30 years, I never seen a deep-fried Mars bar in a chippy once! And, my parents were in the fish & chip shop business, for over 40 years, and didn't sell any either, so in that respect I know what I'm talking about:cool:
You might see the odd one, but it's certainly NOT a key staple of the average Scottish diet.
Marco.

Yeah, defo... Could be a pollen count thing, too? Do you suffer from hay fever, mate?
Marco.
Anyway... Lunch earlier, some homemade chicken Schnitzel with dressed fresh salad-leaves and radishes. red onions, from our garden, with some green beans and tomatoes/ground black pepper, in a classic vinaigrette:

Oh, and what's the wine?
They're inner chicken fillets wrapped in nice thick back bacon. Wine's just a bog standard quaffing Merlot. I've still got your list of recommendations but haven't been to Lidls or Aldis for some time, miss the shops. Will be venturing out tomorrow, to the post office in the first instance then I'll see how comfortable I am at being out & take it from there.
Good stuff, mate. Do you suffer from an underlying health condition, which would leave you vulnerable to the virus? If not, there's really nothing to worry about!
We've been out and about for weeks, doing shopping, sometimes twice a day, including collecting takeaways, without any issues. Just washing/sanitising our hands thoroughly before and after every trip, keeping a reasonable distance away from others, and being careful when we're out not to touch our faces, and without wearing masks.
Get out again mate into the world, and enjoy some freedom - it'll do your head the world of good, trust me!

Yes, I've got Parkinson's disease which can effect your breathing, a common problem is aspiration where you might actually end up with food in your lungs leading to pneumonia so I do have to take care. The meds generally take care of most of the symptoms and if you met me you wouldn't know there was anything wrong. Anyway looking forward to a day out :)
Ah I see... Stay safe then mate, when out, which I'm sure you will, and it will subsequently do you a lot of good:)

Thanks. Mission accomplished, there was literally no one about. Parked almost right outside the post office did me bits and away. Didn't bother with the shops but popped round to see my lady friend & her daughter who were both resplendent in short floral sundresses :)
Lol... Ditto my wife!
So are you letting the side down not wearing yours?:D
Marco.
Pasta looks good, Granty!:)
We're firing up the BBQ later, so I'll be having some chargrilled steak, probably with a herby butter and some salads.

Ok, today's lunch.... First up a cocktail for the princess [Malibu with fresh pineapple juice and a squeeze of lime]:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/GJWZfq.jpg
My starter of fresh Panzerotti pasta, filled with Burrata cheese and Nduja sausage, sprinkled fresh Parmesan and tossed lightly through with fresh sage and a little butter:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/XI9Dhv.jpg
Followed by Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak, chargrilled on the BBQ, served with a homemade herby butter sauce and an assortment of dressed side-salads; olives and rice aside, mostly containing produce from our garden:

Nice, Grant. One of my favourite soups, but a bit too hot today for me for soup...
It's 32C here now!
Marco.

Lol - maybe, but it was medium, so just a little pink in the middle. Doubt you'd have found it overcooked.
One big advantage of Del being at home is enjoying a late, fairly substantial lunch, which means that I don't need anything else now for the rest of the day! And I can work it off by doing some stuff in the garden later when it's cooler. Just how I like it!:)
Marco.

Fairy muff... When it's this hot though, I think salads, pasta, and simply-cooked fish or meat:)

yup russells creamy mash, which is just too sloppy for my liking so i add a little powder to it which works well without altering flavour.. stew was theirs too although i cooked it up in herbs etc.. veg was a steam bag of frozen birdeye(peas, carrots, green beans) with butter and seasoning added by me

Never seen Lidl deluxe before, they must be encroaching on the supermarket's premium ranges at the same time as the supermarkets are introducing more pseudo branded value items to compete with Lidl and Also.

Hi Lawrence,
Never seen Lidl deluxe before, they must be encroaching on the supermarket's premium ranges at the same time as the supermarkets are introducing more pseudo branded value items to compete with Lidl and Also.
Yeah, I've been banging on about it here for ages! Pretty much anything from their Deluxe range is good quality [for a 'ready meal'), and in some cases, such as with the lasagne in question, exceptional. I can't remember exactly how much I paid for it, but it would be interesting to compare the quality against similar offerings from Waitrose or M&S.
I'm pretty sure that both would be significantly more expensive and not necessarily better! Certainly off the top of my head, as I've had 'top of the range' lasagne from all the major supermarkets, and I can't recall any being as good as this one from Lidl - and that's from an Italian who knows what constitutes as proper (authentic) lasagne!
Therefore, if you like lasagne, next time you're in Lidl, buy it with confidence. IMO, it's much tastier than the (already good and popular) version from Binghams:)
Granty, it would be interesting to see how it compares with the one you get from Donald Russell:cool:
Marco.
Top-notch baking as usual there, Tony - and the tortilla doesn't look too shabby either!:D
Do you like frittata? Del's doing one over the weekend or on Monday:)

Marco.
yup, theirs is dearer but good quality, and they dont use fructose afaik.. im a bit allergic to fructose in things like ice cream. they use glucose i think
Nice one... Where are you buying it from?:)
Btw, if you want a traditional milk ice (produced in Scotland, using all genuine Scottish ingredients), try Mackies... It's very good indeed:https://www.mackies.co.uk/
Available from Tesco: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/257236137
And indeed Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, as I bought it from all four... You can really taste the milk!
Marco.
It was sainsbury's I think. I've had mackies and it was good
Cool, stuff. Yeah, I love it because I prefer a 'milk ice' to actual vanilla. The two are quite different. I often find supermarket vanilla ice-cream disappointing in flavour, unless it's a really good creamy Cornish one!
For a milk ice, this Italian stuff [made in South Wales], from a traditional recipe, is also superb and arguably even better than Mackies [scroll down a wee bit]: https://www.joes-icecream.com/
Available from Sainsbury's: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/joes-vanilla-ice-cream-1l?productId=145896&storeId=10151&catalogId=10241&langId=44&categoryId=269815&krypto=0m5N0Ponz5WsLqYsYXCcvUpPrrCV0vgqvzS6VAKggWI mttayguNoKpfw%2BYFmOETus%2FSjBQyZOVZ64hRrMHQjguSwe kSBLLblzRjbbpLy8uOxHDNed7dlC9juU0aMSHMCgyZkLT49gU9 T4K3HP7S4BEUSVncyl%2B9oPE5Sm3yaSdn9h1CBcRX3FcwXbCX D0Iitj2w4Xs6nt%2BUMp%2FFAKuNWFDr3n4X%2B560AHeDC5Vo bsOc%3D&ddkey=https%3Agb%2Fgroceries%2Fall-ice-creams%2Fjoes-vanilla-ice-cream-1l

apart from the brocoli that looks lovely  cant bring myself to like the stuff, although i try
Lol - churz! It was... As for broccoli, it just depends what you're into. I like all veg, although aubergine can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. The broccoli in question was the purple-sprouting stuff, which is much more tender and tastier.
In terms of your earlier meals, I just meant that you normally only have one per day, or rather at least only post pics of one:)
Marco.
Usually have one and maybe a soup later. I had that meal that needed eating soon so took it. Quite nice too.

You have got me thinking - I haven't had samphire for a few years now and I do like it (with a piece of smoked cod and new potatoes).
I could get some from the banks of the river Stour, not too long a walk from where we live, but never been brave enough to risk it as the Stour can be a bit mucky.
Edit: by the way, excellent combination in the meal it really appeals.
Hairy Bikers "keema lamb curry" for us tonight with oven baked "buffalo cauliflower wings" (cauliflower in a spiced batter), popadoms and some chutney.
served with a couple of bottles of Abbot for me (holds its own with spiced food:))

Churz - it did slip down rather well:)
I don't have samphire often (depends where it's available), but when I see it, I buy it, as it goes beautifully with fish, adding a delightful salty note to proceedings. I get why your wife would laugh at your photographing food, but just tell her to humour you, so you can join in here with the daftees!:D

I love pork chops (nice and thick with mash, gravy and peas - simple comfort food which takes me back to my youth) only problem is neither my wife or daughters like them
Meant to say, guy, I liked the look of your meal the other night - different types of Indian food, if I remember correctly?:)
Marco.
ordered more curries from my supplier :eyebrows: oh and soup. love the soups too. got 2 deliveries coming next week so i better make room lol

Cool... I had something a little more mundane for lunch... Back to Lidl's Deluxe ranges of pasta! This time, their 'Meatballs al Forno with Tomato Sauce and Dischi Volanti Pasta' [£3.79], served with some crusty bread, and dressed Lollo Rosso and Bianco leaves:

Just returned from lunch at our favourite Turkish restaurant.
I had Arnavut Cigeri (Turkish liver and onions), with rice and salad, and Madam had sea bass, also with rice and a side salad. For dessert we both had lemon ice-cream with limoncello liqueur.

In any case, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms from your 'Berni Inn' suppers!:D
So, come on....
Marco.
Looked high & low but suspect it'll never be seen again.
That looks good. Takeaway I used last night does some Indian dishes along with the usual chip shop fare. I had seekh kebabs with salad, breaded onion rings, spicy chicken wings and.... CHIPS :D
Well, it'd be rude not to!:eyebrows:
As for that cucumber, well if she can lose a 'stoutly packed' boudin noir down there, then a cucumber's got no chance!!

Didn't think you would be interested in seeing photos of something prepared in a restaurant. However Arnavut Cigeri looks like this:

Regarding home-cooked meals, I have a backlog of images in my camera to show. I'll drip feed them over the next few weeks.
We have replaced the crockery, but the new stuff probably still looks '70s style to you. ;)

My partner has just asked me why I don't make a tart like that for her. I replied "I don't do pastry".
Pork stir fry, not pretty but very tasty

Minced beef & onion from Iceland. They really weren't very good, tasteless bits in bland gravy pie would be more appropriate. Enjoyed the mash more.
Yes, the mash looks much better - really good. Did you make it yourself?:)
I also love how you had two pies instead of the normal one.... Disappointed though that there are no chips on the side!:D

Yes, home made mash using Albert Bartlett potatoes (they seem to be a good 'all rounder') with plenty of butter, whole milk (Cravendale) & seasoning.
Only ate one of the pies & didn't enjoy that, meat pies are off the menu for a bit after that experience.
Chips & mash would've been preferable!

But yes, get pics of yer dinners posted, pronto - and listen up..... CHECK BACK TO SEE COMMENTS MADE AFTERWARDS!!
You always post stuff, then I comment on it [usually making a funny wee remark:eyebrows:] and disappear!;)

Lol - good stuff. The only pies I eat are homemade steak ones, or good quality ones from the butcher - serves you right for buying that cack!:ner:
And I'm surprised you did... What's next, a 'Farmfoods beef dinner'?:D;)

I usually quite enjoy a cheap & cheerful 'mystery meat' pie but these have put me right off 'em.
As long as I'm able to boil a pot of pasta I won't resort to ready meals (whenever I make pasta sauce I always make more than I need so there are a couple of servings to freeze for future use).

Aye, especially when the "mystery meat" could be dog or donkey, eh?:D;)
Soz, I like to KNOW where the meat I eat comes from, and where possible it should be locally sourced and sustainable. I'm extremely fussy about stuff like that, which is why I never eat any kind of 'bought' pies with fillings [except from my local butcher], as for me they usually taste like dog food - just UGH!:spew:
You can clearly cook, daftee, so why not make your own pies, or if you're going to buy something from a supermarket, at least get something good quality, made with proper ingredients. Instead, you chose to buy cheap shite from Iceland, and have paid the price!
Lesson learned, hopefully;)

It was washed down with a bottle of Mâcon-Péronne - Chardonnay, Domaine du Bicheron, from the restaurant's cellar.
We were too stuffed to have any puds! But it was a lovely meal in convivial surroundings, and best of all just great to get out again into the big wide world!
Marco.
Tarragon Emulsion
Think that's what I did my lounge in?
All looks lovely but I'd have had room for dessert (no surprise there then :eyebrows: )
Looks great Marco, we’ve not yet ventured to eat out, but have a cheeky week booked next month in North Norfolk and have a few favourite eateries we’re hoping to visit.

Really sorry that you have been put off pies by that experience.
I love a pie and mash and have never been disappointed by "Capel pies"- available in several village stores around here. I have looked them up and they do mail order (I hadn't realised that they do such a range - only tried the chicken and ham, and their beef with Broadside ale ).
Buy a stock for the freezer and the p&p isn't too bad.

Just seen your lunch out Marco - looks wonderful. One of those places where I would be tempted to have several starters and forget about the main course.

Lol - the 'emulsion' was the wee green blobs! The whole dish was gorgeous... Standards certainly haven't dropped since we were last there, and pretty good value for £19.90 (each) for 2 courses, considering the quality of the food:)
Yeah, we mulled the puddings, but decided to go for a coffee and ice-cream later in Chester town centre! Plus, what I didn't picture was the artisan breads with balsamic vinegar, and basil and olive oil dips we had with our pre-lunch drinkies, so that filled us up, too!:D

Thanks for that Guy.
I like a drop of Adnam's Broadside, would imagine the pie to be delicious.
With a nod to Lennon maybe I'll 'Give pies a chance'

Cheers, mate. We're fortunate to have a lot of quality eateries near us - fortunately still trading! Hope you really enjoy yourself in Norfolk when the time comes - I'm sure you will :)
Marco.
"Tarragon emulsion" - don't you just love the pretentious 'foodie speak' of restaurants.
Otherwise it looks very nice Marco. :)

Yeah, you could do that, but the mains are also fab - and everything else, too!:D
