A big storm rolled over on Friday night, after I had spent the day tidying up the garden. We lost power for a few hours.
I woke up on Saturday morning to find the garden scattered with small branches from the trees everywhere.
A quick clean up of the pool was in order, and then I spent the day wielding a chainsaw, making the couple of broken trees in my garden safe. I then went round the neighbours helping them sort of the fallen/broken trees. The most interesting was a small dead tree leaning against the power cable of a neighbours house. We were able to chop a bit off the branches so that we could push the rest of the tree off the power cable.
I started at around 09:00 and finished around 19:00. I feel absolutely knackered today....
The garden is still a mess in places, but I just can’t be arsed with sorting it out.

Popped over to see my parents today and do a bit of leg work on their garden, and to be honest it puts mine to shame, and some.

That took someone a lot of work to create. Lovely garden.
Cool stuff, Jon. I love the 'cleverly managed, unkept look' - much more natural looking [like nature intended] than some gardens that appear to be trying to win the Chelsea flower show!:)
What I hate in a garden is soulless precision. Just let it flow man, and allow nature to do its thang [within certain managed guidelines].... :exactly:

Thats about a 3rd of their garden, and the rest looks just as good.
Thats what retiring in ones 40’s gets you, i.e a lot of gardening time.
At some point i’ll be tasked with looking after it and i’m dreading it.
But, back to my growing endeavors…

The best part of our garden ( 3 miles from central London ) is next doors fabulous Rosie thing sticking over the fence !. We still have a nice garden though, nevertheless.

Nothing to beat wood burners (or a an open fire) for hottest, but with most natural heat:)
Can't 'do' gas or electric heaters, as I find the heat very artificial and which dries the air. Same goes for central heating, which we also have, but only use very occasionally.

My only query is if the wood will be seasoned enough for this winter? I plan ahead by at least two years so that the oak I burn has dried out a fair bit.

I can’t complain as it all was free :D
it looked quite dry, can be harder to split tho that way.

Yup, can't stand that feeling... I've also walked out of some folks houses, who seem to like living in ovens, with said types of heaters on full during the winter, as I could literally hardly breathe!!:doh:
What is it with some of these idiots - do they no realise how unhealthy that is? Put a jumper on, FFS... My ideal indoor temp is around 18C, anything much more than that I find uncomfortable. I've always been the type who's preferred to be cold than hot!

I’ve done casseroles and beef bourguignon in a Le Creuset a few times.
I do like the look of that cast iron baked spud cooker, but tbh as the Foodi does such epically good baked spuds i’ll probably stick with that.
I do have a Bialetti Moka espresso maker thingy that i use occasionally, mainly because of the aroma.

Forgot to mention that bought these a while ago and am mighty impressed with the performance and price.
The heat is good, they burn for a long time and leave almost no ash..

It still dries better when it is split early days.
My oak is essentially free. It comes from my garden. It only costs me my time, and petrol money for the chainsaw.
The compressed stuff is good and makes sense, but as a traditionalist I love the smell of oak and also how real logs look when stored in the shed:)

Yeah, slight breeze just now and down to around 27C, so perfect for dining al fresco... It's a handy space to have, and the beauty of it is that it's totally secluded. Nice to have breakfast there on a warm sunny morning, just in your undies!:lol:

I think if you have wooden seats then decent cushions are an absolute must, especially if you like to sit up until the wee hours as we, and clearly you, do. We were round some friends the other weekend and their cushions are quite thin - by midnight my poor arse was numb!!
It’s ultimately why we went rattan for both our dining area and lounging area furniture outside - they’re just that bit more soft and comfortable. Plus, they don’t need maintenance!

Dog is getting on a bit (we think around twelve) and has been going missing for the last couple of days - have now found her "sun lounger"; she has dug a hollow in one of my raised beds by the greenhouse :)

I know what you mean about the bulk of rattan. Fortunately we were able to more than triple the size of our patio when we did our building work a few years back, by knocking down some dilapidated outbuildings that also blocked the view down the garden.
Plenty of room now!

Cheers, Rob! Cosy/homely/quaint is the vibe we always strive for in our home (outdoors or indoors), and creating a genuinely inviting and relaxing space within which to chill and enjoy!:)
We also like things that are bespoke/original, even if it means making it ourselves. Neither of us are into stuff that's mass-produced, unless there's no other option. Yes, we do have a couple of parasols and a gazebo for emergencies! Don’t forget we’re down south, though - we get less of the grim weather from oop north! ;)

I really need to seek out a good one round here rather than using supermarkets for convenience.
Waitrose is always good, but rather pricey and i'd rather put my cash into local businesses.

Yeah, that butcher is an institution here. Customers come from miles around to his shop, such is the quality of his produce, even top restaurants use his stuff. Aside from lamb, we went in today to get some streaky back-bacon, which he home cures, as he also owns a farm where most of his produce comes from, but we couldn't get any as he didn't have the *right* pig!:doh::D
Quality matters... So we've to pop back later in the week to get some. Yeah, supermarkets are ok up to a point, but you simply can't beat meat from a butcher and fish from a fishmonger, for freshness and quality, *especially* when it't not only much better, but often CHEAPER! Simply removing the packaging element can save you plenty...
Plus, why wouldn't I use a butcher like that when it's within such easy reach?:)
Waitrose is ok, and probably the best quality supermarket, but for me (and we might just be different in this respect), much of the stuff is overpriced for what it is, some if it considerably so, and even though I can afford to pay the price, it sticks in my throat knowing that a significant part of what I'm paying for is the 'privilege' of shopping in Waitrose and/or badge snobbery - and that just isn't me.
I love great quality food, but I don't like paying through the nose for it, when it simply isn't necessary. Anyway, hope you find a good butcher near you. I'm sure there are a few, and like you, I like supporting local independent businesses:cool:

You guys are getting rain? Last week it was 109f with smoke so bad from the California fires the sun was blotted out and all you could see was a blood red ball in the sky.
All out door activities canceled and due to covid all indoor activities are a big no,not happening.
It got better today and Conner finally has a baseball game tonight and Sunday morning first time in a long time.
It has been raining ash for 2 weeks. No joke, it is finally getting better where we are but our AC filter only lasted a month!

I've been a keen gardner for most of my adult life from around 35 onwards I suppose. I even did a two year foundation degree in landscaping and garden design about 10 years ago in my spare time.
Any way the wife said she would love some Canna Lillies and a tropical type planting in our back yard to replace a raised pond we inherited with the house that was in a right state .
We also had a bit of a surface water isssue due to levels and lack of drainage so I was happy to jump in and sort a few issues during lock down.
I removed the old pond and dug down under to install a couple of square meters of drainage crates to take the surface water. This was fed via a drainage brick retorofitted into the old retaining wall of the pond. I also decide to fit a wooden capping to try yo modernise the look a little.

All in it worked out really well and Mrs Curley is over the moon with her tropical bed and Canna's. I've renewed my gardening and first thing each morning across the summer was out watering at 5am like clockwork and enjoying life. Nothing better than nurturing some plants and seeing the results of your hard work.
I hate to drag the mood down but then in mid July I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and life suddenly changed quite out of the blue on a Sunday afternoon. However I am nearly through the 6 weeks of radio and chemo and doing well all things considered and have a new love of gardening that keeps me entertained whilst I am shielding at home with littl to do. The two years of genus, species and cultivar all came flooding back and my knowledge stood me in good stead.
I also laid a new sandstone patio, replaced the shed and began growing some more exotics like bananas, Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise), Chillies, an Orange tree and Pineapplle Guava in the conservatory. I've also gone from a couple of house plants to about 25 now including a massive Monstera Deliciosa I've always lusted over.

Just done my third "final cut" on my grass (filled my "brown bin" and several loads dumped at bottom of garden) - Weather is so mild the grass just keeps growing. Dahlias still flowering too :)

Not cut my grass since the end of September and probably won't again until maybe April. I gave it a going over with iron sulphate today to kill mossy bits and I'll be doing more seeding.
mine is finished growing really, and has been since its last cut 3 weeks ago. too cold at night for it now

Very similar situation here - love my dog, but her effect on the grass :doh: As she gets older, she seems to get more and more in to scratching the surface once she has done the business (I think that she just gets in to the kicking and forgets to stop).

I had a massive willow taken down last October. It was a relief as it was leaning on the back fence and shading the garden. Got a flowering crab ordered to replace it. Any planting advice-size of hole, compost, what to feed it with?
Willows are shallow rooted, but the roots really spread (I think further than most trees). The willow is also very good at extracting nutrients (and water)from the soil - "greedy".
So I would guess that you have a large area, extending two or three times the height of the "massive" tree, where the soil will be barren :(
I would get some composted horse manure (I am extending my border in to an area where there used to be a very large Christmas tree, so my soil would also be drained of nutrients and lacking in humus, which is why I am using manure). and dig it in to a spade depth or more.
I used "mr muck" for the manure - not a bad price, and recommended by the RHS I believe.
"Dig the hole for the tree as deep as the root ball and two to three times as wide. When you set the tree in the hole, the soil line on the tree should be even with the surrounding soil. Fill the hole half full with soil and water well to remove the air pockets. When the soil settles and the water drains through, finish filling the hole and water thoroughly."

I will have a look at organic manure locally. Its only one tree so dont neat a huge amount. I have loads of bark from the willow spread over my borders. Could I mix some of that in do you think?
I wouldn't mix the bark with the top soil, but by all means lay it on top.
If you mix the bark with the soil: as the bark starts to decompose, Nitrogen from the soil will be "tied up" in the rotting bark by the microbes which need it to do their job - effectively "robbing" the plant roots of nutrients.
Laying bark on top is beneficial - couple of inches thick will suppress weeds, help to retain moisture and your ornamental crab roots will be deep enough to not be affected. On the top of the soil, the bark will take longer to decompose which I think is a good thing as it will do its mulching job for longer.

Just had a massive Walnut tree cut down and left with a lot of space I never realised was there. I now want to plant a couple of Apple trees in it's place but I believe they have to be different types to get fruit. Is that correct and what do I look out for ?
The Apple I want is Cox, as they seem impossible to get in the supermarket and are my favourite.

i got 4 and i get a fair amount of apples. if you keep them from getting too big you would be better with 4. spaced out, with a thought for wind as well as bees etc, they should cross polinate well. they dont need to be huge to get apples

I remember my dad trying to grow Coxes, he messed it up somehow. The trees remained small and stunted and hardly bore any fruit.
they need plenty manure under earth when planting protect roots with a good layer of earth. I was lucky my bro had a horse so got manure that way. then top dress every year with gp fertilizer. also dont be shy about pruning. obviously they need a bit of sun too

In Saffron Walden, there is an old walled garden growing veg and two large greenhouses with Grapes, Pineapples etc. They have dozens of Apple varieties and they have been pruned, is it Espalier ?.. Anyway, they are only 7 ft high, 7 ft wide and just one branch deep. In the season, they are smothered with fruit.

Get the wheeled one and give your back an easier time. It looks a useful bit of kit!
I found the technique for brush cutting without a bad back a few years ago. Don't twist at the hips, but use your arms.
My only concern with the wheeled one is a single speed, and the fact it has a Chinese "Rato" engine.
The Echo is a sturdy bit of kit, and is only 6.5Kg.
I can't try the wheeled one before I buy, so it is a gamble.

I will report back on the state of my back after the first 3 to 4 hour session with it.
I went for this, as I have a few ditches that need clearing as well, and the mower version won’t fit.
I may get the mower version next year....

No compost or feed, just a bit of ash after I have a burn up. Not sure what soil I've got but the Camelia certainly seems to thrive on neglect.
Crikey :scratch: wood ash is alkaline and Camelias are supposed to be acid loving. Whatever you are doing seems to be working beautifully though:)

I seem to be quite lucky with our green friends, this Dracaena was half an inch tall when I got it from Tescos.

You need the right soil and unfortunately we do not have that here. I planted a Camelia when we moved here, 15 years ago and it's still only mid thigh high. Got some nice flowers on it this year which we rarely get as the frost usually hits them.
Just in time to take my mind off recent events: the log cabin has arrived.
Giant wooden Lego at the moment, hopefully rain will hold off this afternoon - then lots of fungicide application, reading and re reading instructions and scratching of head/cursing :)

Plan is, get electrical supply, small stereo for listening to while pushbike tinkering and brewing.
Once completed will then get on with making a spare room in the house suitable for Fliss to sew/knit/jewelry making - retirement and hobbies in comfort :)

Time to get growing..
The spuds and onions are planted in the veg garden (the asparagus & chives take care of themselves) and in the greenhouse (from seed) are carrots, radish, beetroot, white & green cucumbers, parsnips, courgettes, sweet peppers, oregano, garlic, San Marzano & sungold tomato plants x 8.
I’m going big on homemade tomato sauce this year and 8 plants should give a few gallons of the tasty stuff.
I’m not growing as much as I have previously as there’s only so much I can eat or freeze and some veg just don’t taste great when thawed.
Putting me to shame Jon, I haven't even opened my seed packets yet.
Have you got heating in your greenhouse? - it was bloody close to freezing here this morning.

Fed and watered the lawn, and had a general tidy up.

It’s a good machine, and I think I got the nod done quicker, as I didn’t need any maintenance breaks to fix the brush cutter.
It sounds a bit odd, as it is a 4 mix engine, so a 4 stroke running on 2 stroke principles.

Supermarket, but organic bulbs.
There’s a chance the non organic ones will not be fit for growing (I think they get sprayed with something to stop the shoots appearing after a while).

Sad to say I have just spent 6 weeks fill in in a pond , the old owner had made it so nice with electric fence and waterfall . But it's just too much maintenance and can't risk it with young children .

Also spent weeks repairing a massive shed. Costing a fortune but will be nice . Putting in some windows and on waiting list for roofer to do roof properly.its onduline at the moment .won't be cheap but hopefully will last . Normally do myself but it's too big a job and poor access

Youngest daughter persuaded me to try "no mow May" - so I went with a small patch under my Cob nuts (bit of a pain to mow anyway).
So pleased with the effect that I will be keeping it.
Only down side was that I found half a dozen bees "sniffing" around my bottles of St Peters Honey Porter in the log cabin :)

Log cabin finished a month or so ago, now in use as brew store and bike "workshop"
Current stock: 40 bottles of each - Honey Porter, Stout, American style pale ale (dry hopped with 50g of Cascade). Barrel of Pilsner to be bottled tonight (again dry hopped, but with 50g Saaz hops)
