I worked there at the time of Independence (1990) designing a large health project on the Angolan border for the Finnish government. The Fins had a long involvement with German SWA through Lutheran missions.

I returned in 1998 for three and a half years as Team Leader for a big multicomponent EU health project. Alongside, neighbouring Botswana where I worked several times from 1987 onwards, some of my favourite parts of Africa.

I deeply miss the night skies. With very little rain or cloud cover, and virtually no light pollution, the sky is ablaze with stars. The Milky Way stands out as a ribbon of light blue across the horizon.

A company got a concession for an eco-camp on the coast no further north of the Hoarusib river. No one is allowed further up the coast. The deal was you drove up to Mowe Bay and they picked you up and it is about 40 miles north over the dunes. We were one of the first visitors, a few weeks adfter it opened, for the first couple of days we were there only guests.

I wanted to go ever since a client of mine went down the coast from Angola in the late 1980s and took some great pictures. It was about that time that Eric Hesemans came down from DRC and played a big role in opening the area up. We went ballooning with Eric over Sossusvlei, where my hat disappeared and I got to wear his infamous hat, that could be mistaken for a sea lion.

I know one or two people who used to go down that way by boat and would often stop at Walvis Bay. I've no doubt my greatgrandfather, who got a British passport as a resident of Cape Colony, stopped at Walvis Bay on his trip to England.

fantastic , I went to the borders of Afghanistan and all over Pakistan looking at TB healthcare . fascinating and very sad as this disease is rampant partially due to fake drugs , poverty and non concordance with treatment

Tell me about it. I managed to contract TB whilst working in Bangladesh in the 1990s, almost immediately after leaving my University post to work as a self-employed consultant. Despite having been vaccinated, the absence of any sense of personal space in Bangladesh facilitated easy transmission. It's a nasty disease as is the multi-drug therapy which takes many months. One spectacular side effect of the treatment is that it turns one's urine a vivid Lucozade colour. This helps doctors confirm that you are treatment compliant, though it does result in some strange side glances if peeing in a pub urinal. Vaccine deniers as well as the factors you mentioned have seen a resurgence of the disease in many parts of the world.


I spent some time in Pakistan in 1990 helping the National Institute of Population Studies model the costs and effectiveness of reproductive health services. I was based in Islamabad which I found quite sterile and boring. However, nearby Rawalpindi was much more interesting and vibrant so I tended to drive there for dinner. I managed to find time to drive up to the Himalayan Hill stations of Murree and Nathia Ghali in an old long wheelbase Landrover. Spectacular frosty views each morning of the misty mountain ranges.Very bizarre drinking tea on the terraced lawns of an old Victorian era hotel with the mists parting as the sun rose.


It was a bit of an incongruous wild frontier back then. The promenades of the Victorian empire with red post boxes and stalls selling candy remained. However, this contrasted sharply with countless arms vendors selling assault rifles and other miscellaneously weaponry side by side. Nearby Abbottabad was where Osama Bin Laden holed up and where he was finally “eliminated”.

Didn’t start well, 4 hour flight delay (we were booked into one of the airport lounges so just meant there was more time for wine, still a balls ache though…). Then other half’s diabetic meal was given to another passenger and when we collected our cases at the destination they were wet having presumably been left out in the rain whilst waiting to be loaded on the plane. British Airways can expect a large rocket up their bottom over this shambles!

Spent a lot of time in the Caribbean in the late 80s and early 90s. Very fond memories apart from having to evacuate from Turks and Caicos due to approaching Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Was due to fly to Haiti but that was even more directly in the path of Hugo.

Aside from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and South Pacific I managed to visit Bolivia in South America. I wish that I had been able to work more in South America but my language learning skills were permanently damaged by a crazy nun who taught French at my all boys school. When I joined the school she was known as Sister Emmanuel. One year, around 1974 and the release of the movie I think, it was announced that she would be returning with a new name. She clearly didn't take advice on the new name as she transformed into Sister Sheila.

Every time we use Gatwick, we stop over in London the night before and catch the Gatwick Express from London Victoria.

If we have a morning flight we stay in the on airport premier inn and take advantage of the twilight check in facility. We also have their meal deal where you get a two course dinner and unlimited breakfast for £30 and the foods not bad.

This time we messed up as access to the No.1 lounge was included in our holiday with, amongst other things, unlimited breakfast.

If we have an early morning flight from LHR we stay at the Jurys Inn Hotel at Hatton Cross. Dinner and breakfast is not quite as cheap as your Premier Inn, but I'm always prepared to pay for expediency, and the airport shuttle bus is convenient.

You're right - presumably they were planted years ago when foreign holidays were expensive to give holidaymakers the vague feeling that they were actually somewhere exotic, instead of a guest house in Bogner or Dawlish where you had to be back by ten o'clock as that's when they locked the doors.

My first Action Man (before the technology that enabled fuzzy-felt heads) his "hair" was just brown paint, and it looked pretty good. So that's an option.

No need for shampoo either, just clean it with that foam you can get for getting the stains out of suede car seats.

There is a buffer zone between the Greek and Turkish parts, patrolled by a UN peacekeeping force. So I suppose they just have to make do with shouting abuse from their upstairs windows. But Roy is free to move between the two, there are no restrictions in that regard.

Well no one got this (not many tried). The hotel was like the one in carry on abroad except it was two friendly young ladies who did everything rather than Peter Butterworth. (Hallo I’m Stewart Farquhar, stupid what?).

Yes, went with my parents in the sixties and seventies. Last year we went was 1975, West Ham played Fulham in the FA cup and while trying to get a decent signal to listen to it on our radio I tried to position it on top of one of the caravans wall units only to find it had no top. My dad and me had to employ cutlery to dismantle enough of the caravan to get our radio back.

There's an episode of 'Combat Dealers' where they race a Jeep and a Kubel round an off road track. The Kubel wins! You don't see that in the war films.

Why not? Never say never... One of the most amazing places we have been, we seriously thought about selling up and moving there after we visited, in 2006. Sunset from a bar in Key West one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

I've been to 75 countries, some of them several times, but on my wish list would be to become a "centurion", that is one who has visited 100 countries.

Some of them are now sadly too dangerous to visit, whereas others which were 'off limits' are now opening up. In some places natural disasters have damaged or destroyed iconic features and structures - so go and see it all whilst you can.

Just go to the Akihabara district in Tokyo - the place is full of audio shops! Very few of them are at street level, so you have to look up to see the name sign on a bracket outside the multistorey shop.

Whilst there is a bewildering array of legendary and rare audio goodies to be seen, they are not cheap. And the stores having limited floor space, usually cluttered up with the afore mentioned gear, do not offer an ideal environment with which to do any auditioning.

If you know exactly what you want, then stores at street level will have samples of all their stock on display. Some of them may be able to arrange shipping of large items, whereas for smaller items such as cartridges can be bought straight away and carried in your luggage.

Anyway do visit the record shops whilst you are there - IMO nothing in the UK can match those in Tokyo. I certainly came back from my visit there with a dozen or so CDs.

I would also recommend using the Tokyo metro as much as possible. Get a map from tourist information.(often hotels have them to give to guests) so you can find your way around. The various lines are coloured and when you enter a train station you will see the coloured lines marked on the floor. Just follow the line you want to lead you to the metro platform, but check you choose the right platform for the direction you want. Only once did I get on a train going in the wrong direction. All the carriages have the stations on the line marked, and there is always an announcement (in English) of the name of the next station. If you do go wrong, just get off, cross over the line, and go back. Japan Railways offer a travel carnet, permitting unlimited travel for a fixed period of time: one day; one week etc., choose whichever is appropriate for you.

When I was there the Japanese preferred to use cash, but I imagine debit or credit cards are now more widespread and acceptable.

The Japanese are very law abiding and honest. They won't jaywalk, but wait patiently for the 'walking green' at a zebra crossing. I once left something behind in a cafe I had visited. When I realised my mistake, I went back to find they had put it safely behind the counter waiting for me to return!

Places of interest are poorly signposted; you are almost there before you see any signs.

And if you smoke, be warned, smoking out on the street is outlawed.

That's about it - have great time and send back plenty of photos! :)

LOL, I ate the most awful "Japanese" meal at Narita airport before my return flight. Shame really as the take away stalls and restaurants in Toyko serve the most delicious food, but eateries at airports do have a captive customer base.

Its rain Season here in Japan,
first week in Tokyo was mostly bone dry and HOT though, talking 34 degrees feeling like 39.

Wee bit cooler here at Mt. Fuji, and was drizzling earlier.
So no hillwalking for me, looking for a lazy relaxing holiday, and the Boy agrees!
