Looks like the New York New York, although never been in that one as they didn't have a poker room last time I was there.
We used to call Ceaser's Palace 'Roman World' and the Excalibur 'Medieval World' after the resorts in the film 'Westworld'.
Roy, if you haven't done it already go the Gun Store on Flamingo and ask to have a go on their AK :)

Didn't make it to the gun shop, Binions is still there but as my lady friend is afraid of heights & it's on the 24th floor we never ate there. Was going to go for a 12 buck Tony Roma lobster but ended up settling for a Denny's chicken sandwich.

Did some of it last year when we visited off the cruise so we’ve done the lighthouse / Alta vista chapel / natural bridge ( that broke in 2005 ). We had the usual spiel from the rep about excursions but we’ll probably sort our own ones out.
I forgot you'd been before.

How old would you say that Guildford cathedral is? Clearly built at a time when bricks were cheap.

We used to regularly visit the IOW for our summer holidays. Crossing the Solent was for me, as a schoolboy, as exciting as going abroad, which I only started to do at a later age.

A million bricks were bought by the general public in a 'Buy a Brick' campaign at 12.5p apiece.

I believe Salisbury cathedral to be the tallest in Britain at 404 ft, unless it's got shorter with age. Never been, but I have been to York Minster a couple of times. Those steps are a killer.

yeah salisbury used to have a bell tower, although it wasnt on the cathedral; pity they knocked it down. the minster was an amazing place too but it had a decidedly nasty smell about it; although in my defence i was relatively young at time.

It’s looking a bit run down and seedy these days, shame, had some great holidays there over the years. Enjoyed it but I don’t feel I need to go back again.
I sort of prefer run down and seedy if the alternative to that is Disneyfication.
They suffer from quite severe coastal erosion, here are some houses that’ll probably be gone next year. Most of one of their main tourist attractions, Blackgang Chine, has fallen in the sea.

Me to. As a postgraduate, I spent some time living in Herne Bay in Kent. I wouldn't say it was seedy, but it had seen better days as a seaside resort.

I know Herne Bay well. The family's other house is in the Bishopstone part. If I had my way we'd flog it and head west (but not to a 'touristy' bit).

I would have said Tenerife too. I recognise that seawater swimming pool in pic 1 from "A Place in the Sun" I saw a couple of years ago. There was a really smart little apartment for sale up on some high cliffs facing it, with fantastic views. It was on sale for about 70k Euros iirc. I was quite tempted, and only needed another 69,500 Euros :)

probably still on sale, they never buy anything on that show. Amazing villas and apartments at knock down prices and they don't like the colour of the tiles round the swimming pool so that's a 'no'.

We want a villa with plenty of space and a nice pool. Must be near the beach. Oh no that won't do, the crashing waves will keep me awake :(
A place in the sun is generally full of messers who ultimately just get a free holiday on ITV. Only drawback is having to meet up with the irritating presenters including that one who says ‘communal poool’ in a very odd way.

i was in a club in geneva where the star acts were men, but looked like women... you really couldn't tell and were georgous(well on the face of it lol). i think they even had knockers if i remember ...
if i hadn't been told they were men i wouldnt have known:eek:
We were driving in Holland many years ago, in the small hours of the morning, when we decided we wanted a drink. Quickly found a bar that was open and on entering noticed it was a gay bar. Oh well, what the hell; we were thirsty.
It was a gay nightclub and indeed there were same-sex couples dancing. We ordered our drinks and sat down, soon to be approached by a couple of men who asked us if we wanted to dance. I thought quickly and replied "Thank you, but we are not gay" (I could have said 'straight', but that might have implied they were 'bent'.)
Having shown that we were not judgemental, we got on fine. They asked us where we were from and then spent some time talking about music: the barman let me rifle through the collection of LPs they had there to play.
I've also been in a gay bar in Cuba, and again was unmolested and treated with courtesy. I find if you accept people how you find them, and they reciprocate everything there is no trouble at all.

When I was in the Kilimanjaro national park in Kenya, I had an armed escort due to banditry in the lower wooded areas. Not armed with a machine gun, but a rifle - though I suspect it was only for show.
I have been to other parts of the world (e.g. Yemen, Thailand etc.) where I also been accompanied by armed guides.

My father was stationed in Gibraltar during the war. He was a sheet metal worker in the REME (the Army engineers), and during his stay made a silver chalice/vase for the garrison church. When I visited the church I would have liked to have seen it, but I couldn't and there was no-one around to ask.
Gibraltar is a strange place - quaintly British with red phone boxes, letter boxes, and all the shops there that you see in this country: M&S; W H Smith, as well as traditional English pubs.
We were there on a Sunday, so went to a pub for the traditional Sunday roast, apple pie and custard and a pint or two of London Pride ale. :)

Have they sorted the runway yet? What they had was mental, but there were plans to run the road under the runway iirc.

This time I might get the tram though, if only to see that rare species in its natural setting: a train driver driving a train :) Maybe ASLEF doesn't apply to trams.

Yes, had a sausage roll and coffee in the cafe at the top, there’s a bar named after the boxer Randolph Turpin but it was closed.
Nice views but it was f**king cold.
As I said it’s the Mad Hatter

Excuse my ignorance - what's a 'geocache'?

Basically Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting activity that uses GPS-enabled devices. In geocaching, participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the "geocache," (usually a container or marker) at that location.

These are all the places we used to go on holiday in the 1970s. A week in Llandudno every year.
Walk up the Orme because 'The tram costs money.' I think we only went on it the once.
There used to be a café half-way up, we'd always ask if we could stop for an orange juice. No chance - 'It costs the earth in those places.'
And there was the 'Happy Valley' - loads of pensioners sat in deck chairs waiting for Norman Wisdom to come on. We didn't know who he was.

I had a very good friend who lived in Gyffin just outside of Conwy, so visited the place dozens of times.
Regarding the "smallest house in the UK", I have often wondered why visiting tourists don't ask why the house is so narrow when there is plenty of room to build on the left? The answer of course is that the buildings there were demolished years ago.
I have been in the smallest house but I was about four at the time so it didn't actually seem that small to me and I wondered what all the fuss was about.
I also bought - or got bought a - 'Lego' petrol station in a newsagent in the street that runs past the castle.
I don't have it anymore, and I don't want to look up what they sell for now but it's probably about a million quid. Or a bit less.

Lego petrol stations will no longer have pumps, just charging points. So yeah, yours would be worth a few bob now. Might still be worth getting a 'Lego ev station' and putting it away until after the government decides battery cars have taken us down a cul de sac. No idea what 'Hydrogen Lego' will look like though.

Was it a 'pay and display' car park? Those desert car parks require a lot of maintenance. :D

He's in the "Disabled" spot there. Hope he's displaying his blue badge, those Touareg traffic wardens are pretty ruthless.

I've drunk tea with them in Mali, they seemed pleasant enough despite the weaponry they sport.

That would all change if you parked across their driveway.
Always wondered if they got royalties off of Volkswagen.
Maybe so since they never used another tribal name. I mean there was no Volkswagen Brummie or Volkswagen Scouser was there? Which is a shame in a way.

Not if they drive VW Touaregs - they would just push my Audi out of the way! Though the only time I have driven abroad was in Kenya - they drive on the left there. :)

I've visited Timbuktu, didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.
There's a lovely mosque there, built from mud bricks. You can go inside, unlike the more famous one at Djenne.
But sadly Mali is off-limits at the moment; it's just too dangerous. A shame, because the Festival of the Desert used to be held in Timbuktu.

Why, what did you say to them when having tea with them? You didn't insist on PG Tips did you, I can see how that might upset them

yes not a safe place to go sadly !! tunisia seems off limits too now
I've visited 75 countries, and sad to say, a good many of them are now off-limits: in some cases just after a visit from me!
I wonder if there is a connection? My colleagues used to suspect I was employed by the government as some sort of agent provocateur!

That's a lot. I counted up and I've only been to 13. And one of those I never left the airport.

All terribly amusing! The nearest tribe were Himba, who are nomadic and if they’d come across this car park, they’d probably have made use of the barriers for firewood. Given the lack of wood, some of the barrier was whale bones.
As it happens, we took our chances and escaped the clutches of the local parking attendant. I suspect they may have been trying to fill the vacancy at the time. The only person we saw on the road for about 500 miles was a chap walking from nowhere to nowhere. We stopped and offered him a lift. It turned out he was the ticket attendant, general manager and general dogsbody and quite possibly sole permanent employee of a sea lion sanctuary. I’m sure Roy has been to see the seals at Blakeney in Norfolk, as have I. I’ve even been to the Icelandic Seal reserve in Northern Iceland, in winter. I remember it was 20 March because it was my son‘s birthday. He was in Paris at the time. Rather than just wish him happy birthday birthday by text, I rounded up the only people I could find, who happened to be four Chinese diplomats from New York, got them to sing him happy birthday and posted it on YouTube. He liked that.
Anyway, having given the ticket attendant a lift, I then gave him some money, and we went to say hello to about 150,000 sealions. The smell was something else. If they had that many sealions at Blakeney, no one would go to Norfolk.
I'm guessing it was Cape Cross.
