As some of you will know, there's another show at Scalford Hall again next year, on the above date, as a follow-up from last year's successful event. Details of the venue: http://www.scalfordhall.co.uk/
AoS will be represented again there, and will be demonstrating the following system (comprising of gear from members of the management team):

If you'd like to bring some of your own kit and hear it on the AoS system, then let us know and we'll include it on the spreadsheet. We may also be doing some different types of demonstrations this time too, such as a phono stage 'shoot-out' and perhaps some blind cable testing, etc :)
There are also a few places left for people who wish to attend and exhibit their own system in a dedicated room. Could those who wish to do that please let us know A.S.A.P and we will inform the organiser; this includes any requests for rooms at the hotel on the evening before the event. These are very thin on the ground, so again, we need to know A.S.A.P and inform the organiser if anyone wishes to stay at the hotel the night before the show.
The show last year was great fun and well worth attending and/or taking part in, so we'll be doing our bit to make it even more of a success this time around... Therefore, let's try and get as large an AoS presence there as possible. It would be good to meet some 'faces behind the usernames', as it were, so if you can make it on this date then please do your best to attend and make the event a memorable one.
Therefore, could we please have a list of the names of those who intend to come as visitors and/or exhibitors? Also, if people have any comments or suggestions to make which they feel would help add something to the occasion then let's hear them! :cool:

It looks like a great venue but why are these things always held in the middle of nowhere? I will do my best to attend as would be great to meet everyone and listen to some 'high end'

Personally, I'd rather venues like that than ones in city centres, when parking can be an absolute nightmare - and then you've got to walk for bloody miles to get to where you're going!
At Scalford Hall, you can park your car right outside the hotel (if you get there early enough), or at worst very near it, and thus it's hassle-free.
It's a beautiful place inside too, and gives the show a very pleasant vibe :cool:

Yes. Yes I do. Except for me it will be a 'nice run' as I don't have a car or a driving licence (long story). Train to Nottingham, Train to Melton Mowbray and then walk I guess. Not impossible just means stopping over. I will see if I can get it sorted...
Yeah, I guess that I take a car for granted... I never use public transport.
If you're staying over the night before I'll be at the hotel, so nearer the time if you let me know when you're in Melton Mowbray station I'll pick you up and bring you to the hotel :)
Or... If I'm coming from Steve's place again (after picking up the gear he's going to demo at the show) I could meet you in Rugeley and we could go on together from there?

This really is a day not to be missed!
This years event was great, IMO much better than the Trade shows in alot of ways!! :) It's great to put faces to the forum names & then spend a little time listening to real world systems, owners pride & joys! :eyebrows: It's not often possible to hear this amount & variety (40-50 systems) of gear in one place. There was some stunning systems there!
The venue Scalford Hall is a bit of a rabbit warren, but being an old building was very well built. Meaning a lot of good brick walled rooms, so most of the systems sounded very good with only a few room issues, very different to modern built plasterboard box room hotels where most shows seem to be held!

I did the first show earlier this year and I had a really excellent time! - it's great fun showing off your own bits in public. :eyebrows: Thoroughly recommended. :)

This sounds like fun - I may well come along. Never been to a Hi-fi show before but the hotel looks good - worth a stay over.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I can't find anywhere (either here or on WAM) that actually says what the purpose of the Scalford Hall Show is.
Reading the threads and seeing the pics from last year, I would guess that it's not a "Hi-Fi show" in the traditional sense, but one where a load of enthusiasts get together to listen to each others systems.
I've got no problem with that, sounds great, real-life systems for a change rather than multi-million pound jewellery. However one problem does occur to me.
Say one of you has spend years fine tuning your system, the speakers are placed to the millimetre following tens of hours of tweeking. It sounds FAB. But stick the system in a hotel bedroom of a different shape and size (and acoustics) , and with little time for exact placement and little or no opportunity for acoustic treatment, and you have a less than ideal sound, with maybe the system owner apologising to everyone saying "I can assure you, it sounds better at home!"
As I say, if I've got the idea of the show right, then it's a FAB idea, I'm just a little worried that your systems will not be sounding anywhere near their best.
One other problem I've noticed after seeing the pics from last year - Where's all the Reel to Reel decks :scratch:

I'll be there again, probably with Dad (he got me into this Hifi mess after all!), as my 'experienced helper'.
It was a brilliant 'show' last time and I'm sure it'll be even better this time, can't wait.
I'm thinking of coming along. Google Maps says it's a 2' 50" trip for me so the best part of six hours in the car. However, I'm missing my usual hi-fi show fix and would like to meet everyone.
So is it red carnations by the bench or does everyone get a badge?!

That is partly the point. Quite a few forum users had complained about the quality of sound they heard at the normal shows and this was (& is) an opportunity to confront (& overcome) the same problems under similar circumstances. It can be quite educational. Some participants succeeded admirably, others didn't, but no-one minded. It was/is a social event first and foremost and you'll hear an array of components (& systems) that you simply won't hear elsewhere.

To answer your first question, yes, the show is on the Sunday only. The only reason people are going on the Saturday is to set-up in advance for the show the next day - that's what we're doing.
As for AoS people going to the show, a few have stated their intentions at the beginning of the thread, so scroll back to find out, dude :)

For them that's interested, as well as taking my tt rig to be part of Roy's ('oldfogey') demo room I'll also be taking along my cassette playback kit (Teac V5000 deck and Behringer digital equalizer). There's been a lot of 'cassette is crap' posting on the Wigwam forum recently - so I plan to demonstrate that it can be a very musically rewarding source - even with pre-recorded tapes. :)

:) - it's the best way I have to play Dolby B pre-recorded tapes - dial in the equalization to suit the tape - Dolby B playback usually sounds way too dull.
Digital equalization of an analogue source - that's the way to do it! :lol:

Due to the logistical nightmare of moving 1/4 of a tonne of speakers, I'll be visiting Scalford but sans-equipment.
Unfortunately I've limited options at home for help getting the speakers in the car and my usual beer-hired muscle (i.e. Susy's brother) has chosen this week to visit a friend in Deutschland.
Bit of a bugger but at least I'll still get to go

I'm 5'10; need a haircut and a shave; glasses, will be wearing a blue 'ANC Express' driver's jacket. My pal (Rooster) looks a bit like Ronnie Wood (if you squint). Come and say hello, neither of us will bite, but Rooster is a bass player so don't expect anything he says to make much sense (unless you also play bass:)

The NVA room with Richard Dunn in attendance ' when i 1st walked in and listened i thought it was a bit bright and brash ' but its actually pretty good with some amazing dynamics and bass slam from those Cube's ! .

I'm not sure if you got a chance to hear the Techy or not...
Were we introduced to each other? If so, I apologise, as I can't remember - everything was just a blur yesterday! I only managed to get out my room once, so missed most of the rest of the show.
Anyway, I'm just up and still shattered from yesterday, so will comment more later - suffice to say though that it was nice meeting everyone and I thought we did pretty well with our system.
Andre, sorry I never got a chance to buy you a beer - things were just so hectic, but perhaps I can make up for that if your good lady and you would like to come and visit sometime in North Wales? :cool:

Congrats to the guys in the AOS room. Really great sounding system that made for compelling listening - hence why the room was always full of people! There will be lots of comment and discussion I'm sure but just wanted to say Well Done!
Also want to make a special mention of Adam's (Beobloke) solo system and sample of his insane TT collection in the Cottesmore Room. His simple system of Marantz CD94/CDA94 with Naim Supernait driving his very interesting, moddified Ferrograph S1 speakers, sounded fab and did an amazing job of filling one of the biggest rooms with an excellent sound.

I rather enjoyed my time up at Scalford. There were a few highlights for me, but the art of Sound room did (and I honestly believe this) produce the best sound of the show. Those Tannoys are remarkable for something so old.
I didn't take notes, but there were few really bad sounds. Good ones inlcuded NVA, Gromit, Flatpopely, BrowellM, Dbcarney, Rockmeister/Joff. There were others, of course, including the room with the Quad 57s which sound have done with a bit more space, but surprised me with their depth of sound.
Anyway, congrats to Marco and Steve. It was nice to meet Anthony too.

Ah yes.... That would have to be the 'Least Appropriate Speaker to Room Size Award' That he actually managed to get them sounding half decent in a small bedroom (thankfully minus bed) was a tribute to both the speakers and owners determination. Well that and the piles of duvets and pillows in the corners behind the speakers....

Wow! It's fantastic that we're getting such positive feedback! There were loads of great systems at the show and it was excellent getting to chat with so many different people - many who weren't members of AOS (yet ;)) There was definitely lots about the show this year that beat last year. More visitors, more people bringing their systems (? - it sure felt like it!) and a great atmosphere too. We all felt that the AOS system sounded better this year than last. Marco's speakers better matched to the room, and the bass control was a lot better, giving us a far more cohesive sound. The combination of scale, and control, Steve's Bel Canto and Marco's Techie sounded amazing. It was great getting to hear some of my fave stuff (and my Pioneer reel to reel) on such a brilliant combination of kit.
The highlights for me were Beeroclocks' system, gobsmacking speakers (DIY Bastinis Prometheus) and wonderful sound from an Avid Actus turntable. Gazar's Focal 1027Be speakers sounded bloody fantastic as front-end to his Wadia CDP and PC system (I think it was streaming from a HD when I got to listen).
Jerry's (JANDL's) TEAC V5000 cassette deck was really impressive. I'd have been happy to have it in my system! I had an excellent chat with Valvebloke who'd bought along 6 different pairs of Quad II amps, all lovely, playing through a pair of diminutive Rogers JR-149s that made a lovely sound that for me was the best of the small speakers I heard.
I have to agree that Guy Sergeant's / I Should Coco's system was excellent. The horns looked and sounded amazing - wow! And Steve57's open baffles - completely different to the one's he bought last year - sounded brill. Whereas last year they were suited more the acoustic end of the musical spectrum, this year they f---in ROCKED!
Biggest revelations this year? Pluggin in my Nak to the mains distribution block completely spoilt the sound we were getting, til it went into the filtered supply. It certainly demonstrated the benefits of mains conditioning, and just goes to show that seemingly innocuous additions to a system can have a majourly profound affect. Then again... sticking everything through the conditioner was also detrimental! Isolating the sources (digital, mainly) from the amplification was the thing. There's science to it - impedance matching if I remember Anthony rightly - but I'm always surprised when my tin-ears pick up these things!

Yup, it was a Fun Day all round - exhausting though - even though I only contributed 'half a system' ! - Yamaha tt rig and the Teac cassette deck that Nick enjoyed. In fact, I had a fair few surprised and positive comments about the Teac - and some interesting chats on my use of a Behringer digital equaliser instead of Dolby-ed playback - a real conversation piece! :)
I liked the AOS room - impressive ability to move air those Lockwoods! - but, sorry, no - not for classical - the traditional Tannoy dual concentric wispy-treble and upper mids was still much in evidence on strings and affected the tonality of pretty much everything.
A pretty stunning system apart from that though.
Interestingly (I thought!) the Tannoy HPDs in sq's room in custom built polygonal cabs did manage to get rid of (most) of the wispy treble biz - so I think maybe it's (mostly) about the cabs rather than inherent to the drivers themselves? I didn't hear any classical on them though, so maybe I still wouldn't have liked them. Dunno, worthy of further investigation maybe.
But in terms of 'shock & awe' Marco's Lockwoods were pretty, errr ... shockingly awesome! :eek:
Well done the AOS team - I know a lot of work must have gone into that room - and there are many hugely positive comments about it on the Wigwam thread. :cool:
It really was a fun day out. As has been said, great atmosphere..and really nice people demonstrating their systems.
Great to meet and chat with Duncan, Anthony, Ian W and Steve T as well.... oh and that bloke Marco.
For me though, in my quest for small speakers that deliver was answered by discovering what the Proac 1SC's can do.
Especially in this system, which I just had to keep going back to hear.

Someone said that these have just been discontinued...however reading about them this morning seems that they have been replaced with amore efficient version. I'm guessing aimed at an audience more interested in putting them in a valve system maybe?
Anyway... great day and thanks to all.
The HPD drivers have a heavier bass/mid cone with a softer suspension, apparently to trade a little sensitivity for a bit more bass extension. I always preferred to turn the tweeter level down one notch and also the roll-off by one which minimised the sting..

These were actually one of the main reasons i attended. The Ferrograph 'S1'..They have been modified as i spotted the crossovers in black boxes, they sounded ok but the tweeter irritated me, they also sounded better through that Marantz CDP (which is absent in this pic :scratch: ) rater than the Garrard '301'!
All in all i wasnt that impressed with a lot of systems, what i liked, i found Tels sounded nice with Living Voice floor standers, Kuzma, Audionote, ARC...i thought Flatpopely andy had done a great job with the linn, i could actually hear the music playing for once, a great sound but a tad bright, reminded me a bit of The Roksan 'Xerxes', i do blame the size of the room for any problems Andy may have been encountering..One main system that everyone loved i wasnt entirely happy with was Marco's but hey everyones ears arnt the same.
I did manage to meet a few guys i wanted to me, who i missed was just down to the place been like a maze, besides i zoomed off early so full apologies for not saying goodbyes....

Putting names to faces is always good. Sometimes the way you imagine a person to be doesn't match the reality and sometimes it does - uncannily so.
Andre looks more a lot more human in the flesh than he did in that now infamous pic I saw of him just over two years ago.
DaveK was exactly as I imagined him to be...
Richard Dunn was as I imagined only even more so - he looked like the kind of bloke you wouldn't want to share a prison cell with. :eek:
If he were approaching my cab as a total stranger late at night I would probably not want to pick him up. In fact he bears an uncanny resemblance to a chap I did pick up a few years ago and wished I hadn't...

i agree, or even better do it somewhere in brum as its central ... the clue is in the name - "midlands" :)
or set up a AOS one in the midlands in september time so it doesnt conflict ... i could bring my kit then i would feel vaguely justified in doing so :)

Guys, having had a good sleep (I was absolutely done in!) I'm just off now to reassemble my system, so will post some comments on the show later...
Just one quick point, though:

Andre, it's not a problem mate, as no system (or room) is 'perfect' - so I'd appreciate your thoughts. What weren't you entirely happy with? :)

HUGE thanks to all that found and visited our room and to those of you who joined the fun and VOTED for your favourite.
We met some great people with some very discerning ears and comments, excellent stuff. We were kept VERY BUSY all day.
So which cartridge/turntable won the day?? It was surprisingly close!

I think we all agreed the Soul was very slightly better/more refined but i could happily live with either.

Ah yes! I heard this set up and thought it sounded really good. Really delicate with real 'air' Not bad considering that, by his own admission, the Leaks were in need if some repair to some of the components.
My vote for the best sound at the event goes to one young fellow with a venerable pair of Leak TL12s in apparently original condition, an ElectroCompaniet pre-amp and a pair of Epos(?) loudspeakers. Nearest thing to real music I've heard at a show for many a moon................
I used TL12's (rebuilt by Glenn Croft) with ES14's at home and would readily agree. An excellent match IMO.
