It's like a wet February day out there at the moment. It's chilly and belting down with rain. I don't think there'll be respite for a good while judging by the weather maps. Looks like the pooch may not get a walk today, he hates wet weather! :)

Barely a cloud in the sky here, been the same all weekend.

Admittedly that is a rare occurrence here in the moorlands.

I pass a flooded patch of land while driving every week and we've had so little rain here the last few weeks that's it's dropped from around 70m by 30m and about 1m deep wide to virtually nothing.

This is the worst start to the year that we have had in the last 9 years.
Some of the flooding just down the lane from us:

This is usually a dry grass field

Just come back from a couple of weeks driving around Andalucia, where it was a balmy 27degC.

Drinking during the daytime? - of course: a beer or two lunchtime is not uncommon. However the weather here is not good enough for a chilled Chablis or Pouilly-Fuissé (or even a Pouilly-Fumé), it's so cold I have had to put the central heating on!

Let's hope we have one of our usual 'Indian 'Summers.

Marco
03-06-2016, 14:23
Never drink during day.

When I can, I much prefer doing that, including having my main meal at lunch time, and then something lighter at night.

Firstly, it's healthier that way (and generally what Europeans do), secondly, it's more fun and better for the soul to eat and drink outside in the fresh air, whilst it's still light, enjoying a proper lunch (especially when Del is off), than stuck inside at night when it's dark, nursing a Pot Noodle and a can of Stella! ;)

Anyway, here are some shots earlier I took of the garden... The poppies are coming up nicely:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/mntO1a.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plmntO1aj)

You can also see the old gates to our lodge.

Overview of the main section of the lawn (the size of a bloody small park, which certainly keeps me busy cutting the grass!):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/uZzERU.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmuZzERUj)

You can see the summerhouse and the sign for the pub next door in the background. Yes, *that's* how close the pub is! Good job we're not alchies... :eyebrows:

Oh, and the Pouilly-Fuissé won! This is before it was slurped:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/uHTkwA.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pnuHTkwAj)

One of our cats, Abella, enjoying some shade in the undergrowth:

Nah, I enjoy the exercise. Feels great coming in after cutting it, sweating like a bastard, and downing an ice-cold beer! Bear in mind, to keep the grass that short in this weather (sunny then rainy sometimes at night), means I have to do the whole lawn just over once a week - then there's weeding the whole garden, including our 30-yard driveway and its borders!

Tim
03-06-2016, 16:44
The humidity can be a bitch, but you do build up a tolerence for it after awhile, but when it gets thundery and 100% on the index, then you really need to be indoors with the A/C turned up.

Having said that, it's a blissful experience to go for a long walk, get sweaty as a pig and then have a cool shower, you feel invigorated afterwards.

Everyone knows 2009 was an outstanding year for Bordeaux, but 2010 and 2011 seem to be continuing the good fortune.

It's at least 25 degC here: too hot not to be sat in the shade!

Our house, like Macca's house, stays cool however hot it is outside. It's like a fridge in winter, but stays nicely cool even when the sun's cracking the flags outside.

Marco
06-06-2016, 13:52
That's ok, up to a point, but is your house still nice and cosy in winter, when it's freezing outside? Otherwise, the benefit you're getting now will be short lived.

Our house is a little bit the same, as we have an original tiled floor in the lounge (as the tiles look too nice to cover up), with just a large antique rug in the middle, so no carpet, and as a result lovely and cool in the summer. There is central heating, but it's very rarely used as we detest the 'dry', rather stuffy heat it gives.

Therefore, normally the only form of heating during the winter months comes from the log fire, which makes the room lovely and warm, but minus the 'stuffy effect' of central hearing systems and/or gas or electric fires, plus it doubles as a great waste disposal unit - the perfect recycler! :)

No, like I said it's like a fridge in winter. We just bung another layer of clothes on. The people in the house opposite had loads of insulation work done a few years back; underfloor insulation, double glazing etc etc. It's nice and cosy there. We're just too tight-fisted to pay for it.

Marco
06-06-2016, 14:02
Are you serious, or was that an example of your renowned witty repartee?

No disrespect, but no WAY could I live in a house like that, if it was so cold. Bit of a false self-economy, Joe, if you ask me. Why be so mean?

Ignore this, of course, if what you wrote was a piss take.

It was quite serious. Well, OK maybe slightly exaggerated; some rooms in the house stay cosy, but this one, with the French windows, does get quite nippy, so we tend not to use it much in the winter months.

It's not just meanness that has stopped us getting the insulation done. At first, we simply couldn't afford it. Then, we kept meaning to do it and not getting round to it. Then, we thought quite seriously about down-sizing and didn't think we'd be living here much longer, so didn't bother. Plus, I'm a hardy Northerner, and grew up in a house with no central heating and no carpets in the bedrooms. Compared to my parents' house, it's like the Bahamas here.

Marco, enjoyed the photos of your garden, it's a credit to you, beautiful.

Cheers, John. There's a lot more still to be done, and as its a large garden (and grounds) it takes a while to get things the way you want them :)

I think it's important, if you can, to create a relaxed zone, in the open air, out with of the interior of your home: somewhere that looks nice, where you can chill out in the company of friends and family, or even just by yourself, when you need some 'head space', in total peace and tranquility.

Hi-fi (and music listening) tends to be a rather stuffy and solitary indoor hobby, so it's beneficial to have other interests, and get out and take in the joys of nature. It's defo good for your soul!

More overcast here today, but still warm. No signs of rain. Yesterday was gorgeous, and one of my old neighbours from Glasgow was down visiting my dad, so we all went for lunch at one of our favourite places in the beautiful nearby town of Llangollen:

http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/cornmill/

Sitting outside on the decks (as shown below), sipping chilled Prosecco and enjoying some lovely fresh sea bass, whilst taking in the stunning surrounding scenery, in beautiful sunshine, certainly made you feel that life was good:

Yup, cooler here too, as it rained last night - and we're bloody glad of it!

Still nice enough to leave all the windows open in the lounge, and let a pleasant breeze in, but cold enough to ensure that it'll be both more comfortable in the house and indeed sleeping tonight :)

Our bedroom is upstairs, and of course heat rises, and when it's continually been 25-28°C, for the last 5 days, the walls (especially the thickness of the ones here) retain all that heat and our bedroom gets like a bloody oven!!

Don't know about you guys, but one thing I can stand is a warm and stuffy bedroom. I much prefer it cool.

We have large 3 speed, nearly silent ceiling fans controlled by a bedside remote in all bedrooms here. But the bedrooms are on the east side of the house, so cool down in the afternoon. We also, nearly always get at least a bit of a breeze, and the thick walls and shutters keep the house really cool. It was 35 degrees on the beach on Wednesday but we didn't even have the fan on at night. I'm starting to wonder whether I really need air con for my office, but I think I will get it installed - its a hut in the garden - very different to the house, and I need to be able to work every day I choose to.

But - cool bedrooms

struth
10-06-2016, 11:04
Ive a nice shed too and tbh its easier to keep warm than cool ... It is well insulated but the heat can get stifling and a large fan only moves air around not cool it... You will need air con

Ive a ceiling fan over bed that helps a lot Marco.

Third crap year in a row but nothing's gonna change until the Jetstream gets back to it's normal position, above the UK.

There are ripples in the Jetstream which occur every few days and this allows the rubbish weather from up't North to affect the UK. We have a few OK days, followed by a week or two of crap and that's the way it's gonna be for the foreseeable.

Lol - sorry for the late reply, John. We actually went to a new place this time.

Yes, I had some beautiful locally sourced trout (you couldn't get it much fresher, as the river where it was caught was running past us, where we were sitting outside of the restaurant on some nice decking), served in a light butter sauce with capers and fresh samphire, boiled new potatoes and french beans, all washed down with a few glasses of chilled Sauvignon Blanc :)

That was followed up with a superb double espresso (one of the best I've tasted) and some home-made chocolate fudge! Del (my wife) and my dad had a lovely meal, too

It's because Yorkshire's been disenfranchised from the sun :eyebrows:

 Just face it mate its as on & off as it is here :eyebrows:

Lol... Honestly, since I got up this morning at 7.30am, until around 3.30pm, it's been a beautiful summers's day here - enough to get lunch over and done with - and then it started clouding over, and now it's just gently spitting a bit, but nothing major.

For the majority of the day it's been great!

Wet here, but relatively mild... Very close too... You want to wear a jacket and coat to stay dry but just get soaked in sweat instead. Worst kind of weather.. Neither one ting nor t'other

Despite a forecast to the contrary, it's another gloomy day. When is Summer actually going to arrive? Obviously it won't happen yet with the Wimbledon tennis starting today. That always magically attracts bad weather.

Fresh and sunny here for now. Doubt it will last as wind is up a bit, so could go anywhere. Pleasant at moment though a!d certainly not so sticky

Sunny Wrexham delivers yet again this morning! :)

Currently 18°C, suns out along with a delightful coolish breeze, with no hint of humidity - just my type of weather

Usually a lot of moisture in air here due to the geography. its warm enough to draw it in, but not warm enough to dry it up. its a narrow corridor, so winds can get pretty strong as well. Fairly quiet by English standards though so thats a bonus. You would likely trip out at the silence. A lot of folk do initially if they came from noisy areas and run away.lol

Macca
30-06-2016, 18:20
Where I live is usually very quite after about 1800.

Different out in the countryside though. Stayed in a place out on the Welsh Marches one time. Right out in the bushes up a tiny lane. The silence was unnerving at first. And at night when you put the light out you couldn't see your own hand waving right in front of your eyes. That was especially weird as I had just spent 2 years living next to a factory that was going day and night, on a busy main road.

struth
30-06-2016, 18:24
Like that here at night and early morning........... at night you can hear a pin drop .A number of folk have moved here, and left after a year or less unnerved by it. Not as quiet as it was, or as friendly. Modern folk seem to just want to shut the door on neighbours these days. very sad

Macca
30-06-2016, 18:30
You say that but then some people like to be private. I bet they would still come out and help if there was a fire or something.

It's like that at my brother's place. The only sound at night is the odd owl hoot or fox bark and faint lapping of waves from the beach a quarter of a mile away. And you can clearly see The Milky Way in the sky.

Suits me just fine.

Yes we used to have two for the whole (quite long) street. One at either end. And one was always out. I don't know if it is the scouser in me or what but I've always preferred the enveloping cloak of darkness.

They did that here, put a street lamp just outside a bedroom window. Got them to move it. Not easy, but it's much better.

Well, after a couple of days of rain, it's another lovely sunny day here in Wrexham! :)

Just about to enjoy today's repast (Sunday lunch), outside on the patio, consisting of, to start, some locally-sourced smoked salmon, served with home-made mustard and dill sauce and a side salad of watercress and lollo rosso leaves, lightly dressed with Del's home-made vinaigrette.

That will be followed by pot-roasted silverside of beef (again locally sourced from our butcher), with a red wine and French onion gravy, home-made Yorkshire puddings, horseradish mash, roasted new potatoes, infused with fresh garlic and rosemary, leeks and caramelised baby carrots and fresh spinach.

Today's vino is a 2011 Chateau Vieux-Garrouilh Saint- Emilion. Espresso coffee and petit fours will follow.

Lol... The Tea vs. Coffee thing is a classic. Brits just LOVE their cups of tea!

I can't think of the last time I had a cup of tea... I enjoy the occasional one, but much prefer a good cup of coffee/cappuccino or espresso, such as Grant has illustrated - the latter, for me, always finishes off a nice meal :)

Anyway, it's absolutely gorgeous weather-wise here today, and Del's off now for her 6 weeks summer hols, so we'll be enjoying it to the full!
