So would the Robin Trower (orange cover) lurking in the middle, which looks like 'For Earth Below'. A truly superb blues album, especially the track 'Bridge of Sighs', which on a good system sounds mindblowingly good! :cool:

Alan I only purchased this for the ohms / volts / continuity tests , thought it was worth £10 , it also has all the leads case and instructions , Just seen you can still buy these at $599 bucks :eek:

You've inspired me to buy a jar when I'm out with the missus today so I'll be able to see one in the flesh , so don't need a piccie this time :) . I thought you had bought more than that . I really enjoy this thread on a Sunday morning . Unfortunately the only car bootie near me has almost turned into a market so no bargains to be had here :rolleyes:
As a side note I was walking past a local charity shop yesterday when I spied a pair of immaculate Wharfedale Lintons in the window for £19.99 . When I went in to have a better look at them they had a reserved sticker on the back :rolleyes:

My colleague Alan and my (then young) self were called in to fault find, We would appear carrying 500V Megger, Avometer and digital (expensive then) multimeter.
Most connections and electronics were contained in what we will call the boot, that is what my head was in, having disconnected the traction control electronics, I then did some Megger tests, little knowing that Alan had his head under the bonnet inspecting something else.
Suddenly, there was a loud yell and then a bang as Alan jumped and hit his head on the bonnet. It was not intentional that I gave him a 500V shock.

- Take a bit of hi-fi.
- Link the Live and Neutral pins of the plug together.
- Connect the positive lead from your megger to this linked live and neutral connection.
- Connect the Negative lead of the megger to the earth pin of the plug (or somewhere metal on the casing).
- Put the power switch of the item to 'on'
- Set the megger to the 500V setting (or the 250V setting if you're testing a US 120V or Japanese 100V item) and hit the button. Hold for 10-20 seconds.
- You should get a reading of a couple of MOhms at least if all is well.
- If you get a low reading then you have an insulation problem somewhere in the item and shouldn't really use it until this is checked out.
- If you get a small bang and some smoke from inside the item then it's probably got suppression capacitors from Live to Earth which you've just killed. ;)
When I make up mains cables I test them with a modern (digital) Megger. Insulation resistance between any two of the three pins/wires is 1 - 2GOhm.
i once crept under a engineers workbench armed with a camera flashgun as he diagnosed a fault on a big orange CLARE flashtester.....the sort armed with a VERY high voltage probe.
as he stuck his head deep inside the generous casework...i made my move and fired the gun near his wedding tackle.
to say he left his chair is putting it mildly...
to say i left the workshop rapidly is also putting it mildly!!!

I got one of those Clare testers. I stand well clear when using it :).
First visit to a 'booty' this year was made on Sunday.
Bugger all of interest - it's so depressing to see piles of poorly treated 'easy listening' LPs for sale: badly stored with tatty sleeves, and the vinyl itself covered with fine scratches. :doh:
The only purchases made were Duracell AA batteries and a copy of the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (3rd ed.) in excellent condition for 50p.

Putting a bit of fuse wire across the commutator of an electric motor from brush to brush can have interesting results for the bloke testing a batch of them. And it leaves no evidence, as the wire vanishes! Did this at work in my teens. The results were impressive. The whole workshop power went down. :eek:

So can watching someone take a swig of tea from a mug that has been sitting on a metal workbench, not knowing the tea has been charged up to a couple of hundred volts.
Less physical pain, more emotional; set of VCR drum motor coils wired to the bench ac supply and strapped under victims workbench, wired back to a switch on my workbench. Wait for complete focus of victim on measuring something- apply power for just a little magic smoke. Watch victim remove power and scratch head while trying to find what he'd done. Hours of fun to be had :) Of course, my penalty was to learn first hand of the charged capacitor catching game when one victim delivered on his, "I'll get you for that" statement...

I went late and surprisingly still managed to find quite a few goodies this morning.
It did help that a Luton van full to the brim arrived late as well and set up well away from the melee. l was lucky to be in the right place and had first pickings :)
They had about 20 boxes of vinyl and a lot of Victorian / Edwardian bits and bobs that were perfect for the house.

I paid £5 for 14 classical records. They were 50p each but the seller counted them and said give me a fiver for those and the 5 jazz one he wanted a£1 each so a tenner for the records
The valves were £1 each for the big ones and 50p for the small ones so the two ECC81's for £1 and £2 for the magic eyes. All the other valves were Radio and TV types
It all came from one guy who clears houses. Apparently he occasionally does a boot fair when storage space becomes tight.
That's a bit of a result, Andy. Nice one :thumbsup:

I went to a boot sale on a Thursday as I was driving past and had some free time - picked up a nice 80s "sports jacket" for a £1 ! Passed on some slides of topless 80s models on a beach though (felt embarressed to buy them in front of my female friend I was with..).
On the hifi front, I picked up some cassettes for free! Seems at the end of this car boot, people just dump stuff like the field is some kind of rubbish tip. The Cure "The Singles" cassette and "Pat, Me and Dave - don't erase!" which I'm looking forward to listening to and a still sealed Yoko Ono album. Were some CDs dumped too but I had them all already and see them often enough in charity shops... A strange car boot, Romford somewhere on the side of the A12 going north.
Oh well, well pleased with the trendy jacket though.

The house clearance guy was at the boot fair again and brought along some more valves as "he sold some last week" (to me actually, but he didn't remember).
Picked up four Mullard EF86's, a Mullard GZ34 and a military KB marked box anode CV4004 made by Mullard. £3 for the lot!
Also bought 2 pairs of 19C shepherds crook type French gilt bronze curtain tiebacks. Ok not hifi but a bargain at £6 a pair :)
He also had a still sealed stereo copy of Sinatra at the Sands on Reprise. He wanted a tenner for it, a fair price considering its a double album but I'm not a big fan of Sinatra so passed on it.
Should of picked that sands album up.. Worth more than that....plenty sinatra fans here:)
You don't need to be a Sinatra fan to like Live At The Sands. The band alone is tremendous.
Odd that the bloke didn't remember you from just a week ago.

Very true to you and I but probably perfectly normal to someone who does house clearances. Apparently he did very well last week which is why he's back again today. Whether "very well" means he made a lot of money or shifted a load of crap or any permutation of the aforementioned I do not know. :lol:

I nearly bought a fairly crap copy in a charity shop for the same price but thought better of it, given I've got it on CD anyway.
I think Basie really helps, plus the banter with the crowd .. I'm not a huge Sinatra fan either - prefer Dino - but it's his best, IMHO, especially because I love the Count.

The house clearance guy was at the boot fair again and brought along some more valves as "he sold some last week" (to me actually, but he didn't remember).
Picked up four Mullard EF86's, a Mullard GZ34 and a military KB marked box anode CV4004 made by Mullard. £3 for the lot!
Also bought 2 pairs of 19C shepherds crook type French gilt bronze curtain tiebacks. Ok not hifi but a bargain at £6 a pair :)

Yep Cassettes :) I have hundreds and about 10 players my best one is a Teac Z5000 with a wired remote , I serviced it and fitted new belts ;)
got a big akai deck and one of those front loading denons. both sound remarkably good considering

Only found one decent record this morning, ALP 1060 - Furtwangler Beethoven 3 for £1 but I'm quite pleased with the old enamel sign I got for £5. It measures 38" x 36" and I'm glad I hadn't found any more records as it's not light.
It's a bit battered and someone had used the reverse side to mix cement on in the past but I quite like the look of it so the the rest of the morning has been spent cleaning it off and washing and waxing it.
I now have to decide where to put it. The vestibule between kitchen and patio looks to be favourite.

My local greengrocer can sell you (new) enamelled signs depicting various fruits, done in a French 1920's or '30s style. They are about 10" square and not too expensive.
May buy a couple for when we redecorate the kitchen.
What I would really like would be the Colman's mustard advert showing a polar bear with a cold, his head wrapped in a towel and soaking his feet in a hole in the ice, into which presumably he has added the mustard.

thats the main thing that no one was hurt its one of those if i didn't have my foot on the break i would of hit the car in front of me without a doubt...people in to much of a rush to get in not concentrating i didn't get time to look around....

The Z3 had damage to the bonnet , front bumper , cracked radiator was leaking water onto the road.....mine in minimal ding on the bumper needs a minor repair cant thing how much its going to cost the Z3 owner....:eek: its a 1999 modal so parts im guessing are not cheap where as mine is a Daewoo matiz millions of spares about for these cheap car but i love it took the brunt well i think...

No music or hifi this week but I did buy a Dirt Devil 240 volt mains hand held vacuum , still boxed and with a box of accessories ) Unused ) for £2 , I asked if it worked and had the " It did last time I used it " reply
I was sceptical , Plugged it and and to my amazement :eek: it works a treat , I now have a dedicated vac for my boat :D

The Garrard AP76 was introduced as a replacement for the AP75 about 1969 I believe. The Castles are around ten years later if I recall.

Went to a large boot fair at Pedham just off junction 3 of the M25 today
Not a great day for hifi or records but did find an absolute mint copy of Pink Floyd's Animals and a single JBL D140F 15" bass driver so can't complain
Had a much better day with collectables / antiques and found quite a bit of the sort of stuff you see on that programme with Drew Pritchard including a large 1920's 3 piece Holophane light and a Lucas SLR 576 fog lamp for just £5 each. The weirdest thing I found was an unused 1933 F Goddard and Co Ltd collapsible pet bed. The company later became more famous for fishing equipment. Just had to buy it.

The quality of items one finds in car boot sales is often directly proportional to the 'quality'/wealth (or otherwise) of the local people and the houses that they live in, and thus there contents, and what, in that respect, is brought to be sold at car boots sales in the area ;)
That fact is clearly reflected in the results that Andy gets, and the quality of the items he regularly procures....

Most of the stuff at the boot fairs I go to is crap but there are often hidden gems. The JBL I got the other day was by no mean pristine but it was cheap and works perfectly well. It was passed over by many before me at it was hiding in an ugly looking cabinet.

Just a few swing / Jazz records from sunday. Not that much of a big band swing guy but for 50p a record I buy what I can where I can, if i dont like it it can always go off to the charity shops. Alot of the time with swing Im buying because of sidemen I do like on the recording. The paul desmond is really nice and melodic and a double album, and the shelly manne is awesome :)

It was only a flying visit so I didn't have time to peruse any records, as I had to head off to collect my latest eBay audio purchase. It is one of these if anyone's interested!

That is a cracking looking amp, I did media in collage back in the early 90s, Svhs edit suite, everything had those square light up buttons. :)

That Shelly Manne record is great - now you need the other 3. I love the Contemporary record label. They are some of the best sounding pressings I have so I always get them when I see them ;)

It is a Mitsubishi DA-L70 all-in-one tuner/amp/cassette deck and matching LT-70 drawer loading linear tracking turntable for £10. The casseiver is interesting as it has a 7 cassette auto-changer in it and I know someone who will love it!

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but the seller said it worked. Then again, the tuning knob won't move and there are cassettes left inside it. The cynic in me says the only reason for the latter is that everything is jammed and they won't come out.
Still, I know that the intended recipient likes a challenge!

For the second time in the space of a month I have done something I have never done before. The first was having to change the wheel of our hire car in Spain.
The second, and pertinent to this thread, was being the 'other side' of the table at a boot sale today. Did quite well: doubled our investment, and when I took a break and could be a 'buyer', bought three early ZZ Top CDs for £1.50. The CDs are in immaculate condition.
I thought, with some amusement, that my car might be the oldest one there, but it wasn't. It was beaten by a trader's 'white van'.
Nice one. So are you going to use the profit to put down a deposit on a new one? :D :eyebrows:

Funny, I went to a car boot sale as a seller last month and had three people ask if my car was for sale! :D
Given that it went into the garage the next day, stayed there two weeks and came out having relieved me of nearly £2k, maybe I should have considered this option... :(
Not quite so successful today. But managed to pick up some J.J. Cale, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison and Jerry Lee Lewis discs in immaculate condition for very little.

The local boot sale here was disrupted and not too busy due to a couple of heavy showers. Only went as a buyer, not as a seller (just as well given the weather), but picked up some CDs in mint condition for 50p each:

That Joe Cocker recording is a classic.
If you used a machine that conforms to the Philips Blue Book specification, you will be surprised how good pre-recorded cassettes can sound.

Today’s boot sale (well two of them actually):
A couple of CDs: Eric Satie piano pieces on Decca, for 50p and U2, ‘All That You Can Leave Behind’ for 25p (since there were two copies in the jewelcase !?). And the complete ‘Hobbit’ DVDs, for £3.
Also saw, but did not buy, a Leak Stereo 70 integrated amp in reasonable cosmetic condition. Didn’t ask the price, as I wasn’t interested, but I hope it went for somewhat less than the going eBay rate of £150.

This is the first time I have seen some genuine British built audio gear for sale at my local boot sales. Most of it is indifferent Japanese stuff, usually mini or micro systems in poor condition. (Apart from a 1930’s Marconigram pickup arm with 78rpm head, which I reported on a few weeks ago.)

All in excellent condition at £1.50 each.
I’m always amazed at some of the things that turn up at boot sales. This time it was a pair of 100V line to 4, 8, or 16Ohm transformers, enclosed in wooden cases, and probably made for the GPO. Another item was a laboratory dielectrometer; a beautifully made precision piece of equipment, which one would not expect to see outside of a research laboratory or a university.

only one HiFi item to be found and that was a low end Nad integrated amp , I lifted it up and it felt like a empty tin , very lightweight so I put it down again and walked away :)

Been a strange day today at the boot sale. Didn’t buy any records or CDs, nor did I see anything of note connected to hi-fi and audio, save for a 100m roll of twin-conductor flat copper ribbon speaker cable, designed to be run under the carpet.
The only thing I bought was a DVD of Spielberg’s film ‘The Color Purple’ and a whole bunch of LED light bulbs.

Unlike the low energy fluorescent bulbs you normally see, these look like the old pear-shaped pearl tungsten light bulbs, but use high efficiency white LEDs for illumination. A 7W LED ‘bulb’ has the same brightness as a 60W tungsten bulb. Not only that, these bulbs are unbreakable, run cold, and switch on immediately; without the annoying ‘warm up’ time of low energy fluorescent types.
They are made in America and the seller had bought up some bankrupt stock, so they had to be sold without their cartons. I bought the entire stock of bayonet fitting types he had, and have now replaced all the fluorescent type bulbs in the house with them. They normally cost £9 apiece; I bought them for £1.50 each.
Bargain! I got sent a free box full of the energy saving bulbs about ten years ago. Put about half of them in and none has failed so far. They do take time to get to full brightness though. LED is much better.
Not got any leds. A bit bright so go for the lowest ow energy ones. 7/8 watt if posssible. They use so little energy you can just leave them on..last longer i think

Been trying quite a few LED laps over the last couple of years, I don't think the ones I've tried are really the ultimate solution, some early failures, some not enough light output for the wattage, some horrible colour of light and so on.
Poundland have various types, some OK.
Another quiet day at yesterday’s boot sale – well, it is getting close to the end of the season.
The only things of a serious audio nature I spotted were a pair of Technics SL1200/II decks in DJ flight cases equipped with red-coloured Ortofon ‘Concorde’ cartridges. Also a lovely gold fascia three waveband Chapman valve radio tuner – mono, of course and in needing of a little TLC, and a lonely-looking Collaro R2R machine, which brought back memories of the one I had; picked up for a couple of quid and used with the Mullard tape head bias and drive circuit (valved and single channel).
The only software I bought was a couple of DVDs: ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Pretty Woman’; a couple of CDs:

The only things of a serious audio nature I spotted were a pair of Technics SL1200/II decks in DJ flight cases equipped with red-coloured Ortofon ‘Concorde’ cartridges. Also a lovely gold fascia three waveband Chapman valve radio tuner – mono, of course and in needing of a little TLC, and a lonely-looking Collaro R2R machine, which brought back memories of the one I had; picked up for a couple of quid and used with the Mullard tape head bias and drive circuit (valved and single channel).
The only software I bought was a couple of DVDs: ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Pretty Woman’; a couple of CDs:

Just back from the booty with 2 nice items
1st is a Yamaha CA800 amp , Has a couple of non std knobs and it did not power up , Had a look at the 2 external fuzes and they are both OK , Slid the case off and had a look at the 2 internal fuzes , both OK , so why does it not work :scratch:, Had a dig a bit further inside and found 2 wires not connected to anything :scratch:
Looked at the mains lead and thought , this is to modern , it has moulded on plug and it should have the older plug with a screw in it that you can take apart . Traced the power lead going inside the amp and someone has just pushed it inside to make it look like it works , its not connected to anything , Fingers crossed its another unit thats had the plug cut off flush with the back of the amp before it was sold as its not PAT tested . I have purchased amps like this before , replaced the power lead , switch on and all has been working , Fingers crossed this will be the same :)
Its a Class A amp with 3 phono stages options ,one MM 1 Adjustable MM and a MC , I do hope it works :please: Will get the soldering iron out later and see what happens , If Dagenham goes off grid you will know what happened :lol:
2nd is a Technics SA 200L in lovely condition and it powers up , Will hook it up later on today and see if it works :)

I've always liked the idea and look of Yamaha amplifiers, but never owned one. In the mid 70's I applied for a job with them, didn't get it though.
A quick search about your amp says it's 45 Watts per channel, so unless it has a switch for changing from class AB to A (at reduced power), I think it's unlikely to be class A.

I love the look of the silver-finish Yamaha kit. The CA800 will offer 10 watts when switched to Class A mode. Enjoy!
