Went to my local booty for the first time in ages yesterday. Came home £7 lighter and with a Cambridge Azur 540D DVD player under one arm and an Aiwa DX-M45 CD player under the other.

The Cambridge was in an absolutely disgusting state but cleaned up well and appears to work and the Aiwa is in lovely condition and works a treat. It's an intriguing product as it is ostensibly Japanese but contains a Philips CDM-4 mechanism and TDA1541 DAC but, strangest of all, has a "Made in UK" sticker on it.

Sounds intriguing. Sony own Aiwa (or did) and they used to assemble some Sony kit in the UK. So maybe that is the connection? Assembled in UK seems to be the same as made in UK as far as stickers are concerned.

Don't be fooled by appearance - the Aiwa is light and the Cambridge is the heavier of the two!

Also, don't be put off by the Cambridge being a DVD player - it's a very good CD player. I was working at Audio Partnership when these were launched and the design team put a great deal of effort into the unit's 2 channel audio performance.

As an aside, a 640D DVD player got as far as prototype stage but was never put into production. This was a truly stellar sonic performer and I think it's a shame it never saw the light of day.

This weekend’s boot sales

Yesterday was diabolical – only bought one LP: Les Swingle Singers - ‘Jazz Sebastien Bach’. French Philips BL 7572 (1963)

(The sleeve of my LP looks quite different, though the track listing is identical.)

Bach aficionados will no doubt turn their nose up at this (as, no doubt, they do with the Jacques Loussier’s ‘jazz’ transcriptions). But I don’t care, and anyway I’m sure that Johann Sebastian Bach would have wholeheartedly approved. In perfect condition, for £1.



Today was hardly better, despite visiting the largest boot sale in Essex.

I saw a pair of Mission 760 speakers in perfect condition for £25.

I'm calling today the end of the worst year I've ever had car booting and looking back through this thread it seems it's been a pretty poor year for everyone :(.

Today has been the best haul I've had this year, 14 minty BD's for £25.

Record fares are worse. Everything is top book plus. Fortunately I rarely buy records now, in fact I'm more inclined to sell them these days. But, back in the days when I did, it was knowledge that found you the bargain

It is indeed the 2008 "re-boot", I've not seen the original but I enjoyed the 2008 version, Keanu Reeves playing to his strengths in a monosyllabic role. I would also add Children of Men to the list of credible films among the bubblegum, well worth watching if you've not seen it.

Yes, and that's why I don't come away with records spoilt by "snap, crackle and pop", or have torn, stained or dog-eared sleeves. The appearence and condition of the sleeve is a good indication of the likely state of the vinyl inside. So too is the way they are displayed - if they are simply dumped down on the ground with no care, then I won't even look at them. I doubt very much if I have missed a bargain in doing so.

Classical records sold by private sellers at boot sales are usually very good, as they have been well looked after and often just need a clean. Even so, I always check the surface of each side carefully before I buy. I have posted here the records I have bought (many of them are boxed sets), and in all cases the condition of the records have been very, very good to excellent (I won't use the term 'mint' or 'minty-mint' (ugh!) as the records are not new and have been played, so cannot be mint); the worst cases only requiring a clean on an RCM.

I should also add I'm a bit choosey about the record label, recording and the reputation of the performers: so no Reader's Digest, Music for Pleasure or Record Club pressings for me. Call me a snob if you like, but I can quite easily pick this stuff up (and better) at my local charity shops.
