I just cannot put my finger on why I like my new speakers, Rega RS3's... :doh:
It's strange indeed...
Do they have the best bass? err no not really... do they have the best midrange? again not particularly or even the best highs to be honest...
However what they have in spades is musicality which to be honest is a tricky one to explain but they certainly get the feet tapping somehow
I have not swapped back to the Tannoy's to compare as yet probably because I am enjoying the RS3's so much, but I will at some point I guess

I've often judged things by how they get my feet tapping, it's a funny thing and hard to describe sometimes. Musicality is an overused term, as is "boogie like a bastard", but some stuff just has it..
You like them because they are new - they have strengths in places your others were weak and you haven't yet become acclimatised to the weaknesses of the new.
Perhaps.

Same with my gennexa RS5 Pros i cant describe it but i love them...:) whisky taking effect....

Not really i have a feeling i might live to regret this in the morning...:doh:

I'm with Ali on this one, musicality is it or 'boogie', they do.
'Boogie factor' can cover a multitude of sins, no doubt about it.

Yeh, I can buy "Boogie factor", but "Foot tapping"? ...er no. I've seen too many dodgy Hi-Fi salesmen do the foot tapping routine.
(usually a hoot though when it isn't even in time with the music.:lol:)
Anyway, enjoy your new speakers. :thumbsup:

I've had RS3's now for the past 18 months and they have taken everything I've thrown at them and they are more than enough for my smallish man cave!!!! Just got my new Creek Destiny amp a couple of days ago and they love it :eek: :eek: not thinking of changing them anytime soon !! Enjoy :) :)

The curse of the box swapper. That or the Rega speakers and the Tannoys couldn't sound more different. Your just enjoying the difference (for now). Until the curse strikes again...:eyebrows: :)

Bev, if I'm honest, I have never heard a Rega product that has really done it for me. I don't care for their voicing, I find their arm grey and lifeless, even the RB1000 I had for quite a while and their speakers strike me as best, average. The whole range sounds like hifi to me, not music. Also, the OTO is in my opinion, no where near man enough to drive them, but hey, if you like them, enjoy.

Well it's strange isn't it as the very last thing I would call the RS3's is grey and lifeless. I would actually describe them as one bit of equipment that actually doesn't sound 'like hifi' as you suggest, quite the opposite in fact, just very musical indeed ;)
As far as the Oto is concerned it seems to be very happy indeed with them, I know it's only 10w but that doesn't seem to be a problem at all with the Rega's
I guess it just comes down to personal choice but I am very happy with them and the Oto combination and I cannot imagine them sounding any better with a more powerful amp to be honest
Happy is what happy does ;) its a small room and they are relatively easy load so should sound fine; after that its down to personal choice. Ive not heard them so wouldnt know.

You are quite right Grant, I am very happy with them. Maybe it's to do with the small'ish room that makes them work with the Oto and maybe a bit to do with them being an easy load I don't know but they certainly work lovely :D

Yes, I replaced the RB1000 that was on my Art Audio Composer 1 with my SME IV.V, which is the IV as supplied to Sumiko in the USA ie with damping trough and Cardas wiring. I did an A/B and found the SME superior in every way.
Bev, as opposed to some here letting their voices be heard I do know what you're talking about - for I also own a pair of RS3s. though I wasn't as lucky as you in that my pair came with overloaded drivers, hence I've as yet just heard them say at 70% of their real capabilities I must say they're one of the very best speakers I've ever owned - consisting quite a number with AN-Ks and Js included. but in MY room and system, and to MY ears what they do is nothing but amazement both in terms of 'general hi-fi attributes' (i.e. space, resolution, transparency, etc.) and musical involvement (i.e. tone, timbre, etc.). just keep listening and care nothing about what others say of - if not praising ;) - your speakers

I wouldn't worry. As long as the Regas pass the 'tootsie test', as seems to be the case....

Declarations of rival superiority are nothing more than opinion's of ones preference when it come's to the type of equipment that often gets discussed within similar price point's, so who's right then? I would suggest it's the listener, not the distant armchair critic ;)
Yes it's an odd one that - I've toyed with replacing my Dali's with RS3s or 5s, to see if the 'Rega synergy' works in my room. My friend has a pair of RS3s, and even though they're plonked in the room with a chest between them, sofa on one side etc. etc. they manage to portray a soundstage with real 3D depth even sitting alongside one speaker. There's just something very unforced and beguiling about their presentation that draws you in, even when they're only on background listening duties. I'm wondering if the 5 has the same quality or if it's just the 3s that really are special in that way.

Hi Attila, I'm glad you think the same as me about the RS3's but sorry that yours have driver problems. Are they repairable? I would have thought Rega would hold some stock of the drivers. I also have owned loads of different speakers over the years, including some AN's but I can't remember if they were J's or K's and although I loved them in the room I heard them in they did not work in my room at all and I sold them very quickly indeed
As you say in MY room with my system the RS3's seem very happy and what they really excel at is musical involvement so I'm a happy bunny :)

Yes Tim I also feel that the Rega's represent very good value for money, the RS3's are one of the least expensive speakers I have owned and they are none the worse for it ;)

Jason I have only heard one pair of Dali's but cannot remember which model they were but I thought they were very good indeed but that wasn't in my system in my room
I have to say that my RS3's have also kind of been 'plonked' down in the room without trying different positions or toe-in etc as I like them just as they are. 'Unforced' is a very good description of them and being so musical they definitely draw you in. I haven't heard the 5's so cannot comment but on reading it seems that the 5's are physically larger and have more bass and the side firing bass driver is larger than the 3's however I believe the other drivers are the same
I have read good things about the 'Rega synergy' and I see you already own the dac, cd player and amp..... ;)

That's kind of what I've been thinking Geoff even if some people think the Oto is impossible of driving the RS3's well..
At the levels you are playing them at I doubt a rega amp would improve it much but guess you wont know for sure til you try.

Yeah, just enjoy them. The Rega's I heard at Scalford sounded really good in the smallish room they were in. They obviously don't seem too fussy about those things.

Know EXACTLY what you mean about them sounding "just right"...they just play music and (to me) are very much NOT hifi sounding, in fact kinda the opposite.
They just play music in an open, engaging and honest way.
If your a bass freak and have a room the size of the Albert Hall I'd look elsewhere, but in an average living room they are superb.
Their big brothers the 5's have a similar sound, just a bit more bass.
Would have happily lived with the RS3's, and had to go quite a bit higher up the spendy tree to get a noticable improvement.

I guess I should put the Tannoy's back in the system and then report back on my thoughts... :D ... I will do this sometime....

hi Bev, I'm a bit late in responding but thanks for your sympathy anyway - and I'm, at the same time, happy to announce that my RS3s work as they should again with an array of a complete new drivers set by the help of TAD, Rega's German partner company :)
