View Full Version : Help me choose some new wheels for my Brabus Mercedes....
Yeah, I know where you're coming from... It was just some 'disposable TV' from back in the day. Interestingly, I don't recall it having been repeated in recent times, so perhaps it wasn't that popular in the first place?
One thing, for me, it had in its favour, as indeed was the case with many shows back then, was decent actors, which sadly doesn't always happen now.
Michael Landon was a case in point, as Bonanza aside, where he also excelled, I remember him being in a few films, and where the parts he played were always well acted.

Yeah, she liked dark-haired men, lol. Ronald Allen, yeah that was the bloke. It was Benny and Miss Diane I remember most, though! They were just some of the programmes that I remember being on regularly when I was a kid/teenager.
Marco.
I remember in Crossroads when somebody opened a door the whole wall moved :D
my sister was keen on little house. sure she had them on dvd. bonanza, in the day was good, although i preferred high chapporal

Lol, indeed.... All part of its charm! The same was the case, back then, with Dr Who, where I believe the use of bubble wrap was rather popular:eyebrows:

The props were certainly more animated than the actors.
If I remember correctly, Crossroads got only one 'take' with their scenes, to keep costs down. If it didn't go right, tough tit, it went out like that. Probably their biggest ever outlay was having Paul McCartney do a version of their theme tune. Sir Paul must have been really proud of that one, as he saw fit to put it on his "Venus and Mars" album. That should have earned him a slap.
Crossroads...remember it well as a kid.
Wheres Benny nowadays, did he ever get his own farm?
Keeping the Crossroads spirit alive, I give you...Acorn Antiques. :)

In fairness you'd never get tired of slapping McCartney. That was probably why he split up with that bird with the one pin. His face must have been red raw by the end.

Victoria Wood sketch on her show Marco, not a show in itself. :)
Ah, soz, didn't bother playing the video... Just done now, and it's not really my type of humour. Plus, I don't really get what it's got to do with Crossroads?

What has three legs and doesn't talk? Paul and Heather.
My brother got chatting to Heather Mills while on a night out in Philadelphia a few years ago. Apparently she was lovely, with a wicked sense of humour. But not once did she badmouth Paul. I know she got a lot of bad publicity, but I'm more inclined to believe my brother's take on her character than that of the tabloids.

Crossroads - wow ! The current generation wont have a clue how big that one used to be back in the day. (And now we have a generation brought up on Eastenders :( )
Benny and Miss Diane
Heaven knows what ever happened to the cast - Might have to have a check on line...

I see... Well, from watching that clip you wouldn't think it! ;)
How did you know that - were you a fan of Victoria Wood? You see, I wasn't particularly.
What you've mentioned aside, maybe Gaz could explain what exactly was 'Crossroads-y' about the vid he posted?:)
Marco.
it was written, based on crossroads
That pretty much covers it - the scripting and the 'filmcraft' mimic Crossroads and others of the same type. You've really got to watch more than one YouTube clip to get it.
Indeed... I always feel if you're going to make a point, by posting a YouTube clip, it has to be 100% obvious (to everyone) what that point, or the connection, is. I've never seen the clip before (or those connected with it), and wasn't a fan of VW, so had no idea about any Crossroads connection.
Anyway, not to worry!

Shut it, diesel-disser! :ner:
I think you'll find I've given Gaz some good tips about various things automotive;)
Marco.
Acorn Antique parodies Crossroads, specifically:
Wobbly scenery and backdrops
Actors missing their cues or coming in too early
Actors forgetting their lines
Sound boom and/or camera crew occasionally in shot
Terrible acting
Major issues with blocking
Ridiculous script and plotlines
Thank you. I feel suitably enriched now knowing that:)
Marco.
It was the best thing she ever did. That and 'Kitty'.
Not heard of that either. As I said earlier, her humour was ok, but not really to my taste. Give me fonejacker, any day - now *that* is funny!
Marco.

Watched it. Like I said it's ok, but not really my thing.
Quite a few of the references she made, which were supposed to be funny, I didn't understand because I didn't know what they were, or didn't get the context in which they were supposed to be funny. That type of humour is a trifle too 'English intellectual' for me.
I quite enjoyed Patricia Routledge, as Hyacinth Bucket, in Keeping up Appearances, which for me was funnier.
Still not a patch on something like The League of Gentlemen, though. Now *that* is right up my street!
Marco.
It is very English humour, that is true.
I never really got League Of Gentlemen, just weird rather than funny - for me anyway. But we don't get to choose what makes us laugh.
Absolutely... I'm just not really into, as you say 'very English humour', probably because I'm not English (and don't really relate to an overtly English mentality). For that reason, I wasn't really into Dad's Army, which so many other folks love.
Give me a good Scottish comedy, any day, like Chewin' the Fat! Now *that* I can relate to!:D

I think that is funny, and Rab C Nesbitt, but I'm not Scottish. I think there might be more to it than nationality/culture, but it is certainly a factor.
Yup, defo...
Aside from the nationality/culture thing, I'm just not into comedy that, in order to 'get' the joke, presumes a certain level of academic (and/or perhaps political) knowledge, as I find it rather snooty and elitist.
'Funny comedy', for me, is something that makes you laugh at real-life situations, and where the joke in question doesn't require 'intellectualising' over. Otherwise, for me, it becomes too much like hard work!

Right, watch Limmy on YouTube. Proper Scottish humour.
Can you post a video, as an example? I've not heard of him.

Not bad, but a wee bit stupid... All that pointing stuff at the beginning nearly made me switch it off. WTF was that about??
The funniest sketch for me was the Versace one, with the cross-dresser!
Marco.
It's hilarious, and with a lot of drug reference it is perfect for Scottish viewers!
'Give a man a fish (embedded video or link) and the lazy guy can eat for a day, give him the means to fish (the name Limmy) and he can eat forever.' - Me
Thats a odd thing to remark.. Scots are no more drug orientated than any other culture. Possibly less so.
It's hilarious, and with a lot of drug reference it is perfect for Scottish viewers!
Well, "hilarious" is of course subjective. I chuckled a few times at the content, but that was it. Most of it was daft, in fact my wife was listening to it (as I had it playing on the computer), and she came over to watch it, and arrived at the same conclusion.
Why is anything with a drug reference "perfect for Scottish viewers"? Are you ignorantly stereotyping people, or implying that there's only a drug culture/problem in Scotland?
'Give a man a fish (embedded video or link) and the lazy guy can eat for a day, give him the means to fish (the name Limmy) and he can eat forever.' - Me
Was that meant as a dig? I could equally accuse you of being 'lazy' for simply posting a link, and not embedding the video! :ner:
Marco.
Well, the rate of drug deaths in Scotland is over 2.5 times that of the national average.
I honestly suggest you give up this line of discussion, as it's a little offensive. In fact, your style of posting here at times. out with of hi-fi discussions, does comes across that way (verging on troll-like), and if that carries on, it's not something that bodes well for your continued presence here.
Marco.
Right; Limmy is like a window on life - especially in Scotland. There is a sadness behind his comedy, most of which reflects the drug issues in Scotland.
If you take me as offensive, I'm really sorry about that - however that is not the intention. People really are too easily offended these days.

death rates dont have to mirror usage.

I have no issue with that, but I'd argue that there's just as big a drug problem elsewhere in the UK, in many major English (and Welsh) towns and cities, regardless of what the 'official statistics' say, which like anything else, are 'massaged' by the government, in order to portray a false (or not entirely accurate) picture that suits their agenda.
If you believe what the statistics say (especially that they tell the WHOLE story), your argument is fatally flawed from the off.
You have to remember that huge chunks of Scotland are remote and sparsely populated, whereas most of England isn't - and so, in that respect, the drug culture/problems in the likes of Glasgow and Edinburgh, which simply don't exist to the same extent elsewhere in Scotland, will significantly skew the Scottish figures.
If you take me as offensive, I'm really sorry about that - however that is not the intention. People really are too easily offended these days.
I take the ignorant stereotyping of anyone as being offensive.
How would you feel if, based on image portrayed or 'statistics', I branded the English as 'racist, nationalistic, beer-swilling football hooligans'? Would that be any more of an accurate reflection of reality than the Scots being branded as 'kilted, drugged up drunks'?
Marco.
Trainspotting didn't do us Scots much good perception wise I'd imagine...

There you go - Eddie Jones isn't even English! Beer, nationalism....just need the racism (although English isn't a race).
Regarding the statistic, the Scottish parliament commissioned the paper that outlines Scotland's far higher drug issue than the rest of the UK combined. If it wasn't an issue then there would be no requirement for the paper.

Lol, the difference is that we can laugh at ourselves [and often do], whereas some other's can't, as they're way too 'up themselves' [having a grossly-inflated sense of self-importance] ;)

Absolutely. As they say, there are many ways to skin a cat. However, I'm sure you'll agree that any advice I've given you on car or hi-fi stuff, which you've implemented, has been successful. In terms of hi-fi, I'm thinking of your mains set-up in particular.

Absolutely, Penelope. It's happened too often in the past, so now we operate a 'zero tolerance' policy on irritants. Therefore, as soon as we feel that someone has earned that title, it's hasta la vista! :door:

they did a paper that said scots drink more than rest of uk as well, but it wasnt true. they say we die more, but the actual reason was withheld as it didnt fit with mizz sturgeon's crusade on alcohol. one of the main reasons alcohol affects scots more health wise is scotlands soft water with doesnt add prottection to liver etc. when this was pointed out the part of the paper responsible was added to the huge pile of...dont print.
this is usual by all uk political parties of course. agendas.. blame the poor, blame europe, blame scots, blame irish...whatever suits.

Of course it's an issue, there's no argument about that - and it's bad; just that, in reality (out with of misleading statistics), which you'll ably see if you've lived and/or worked in different parts of the UK, it's not necessarily any more of a Scottish problem than it is an English or Welsh one.
Btw, what nationality are you? 'My' is an unusual name :)

You're not seriously suggesting that brainless louts, misbehaving at sporting events, is a uniquely Scottish problem, when English fans (particularly of the football variety) have a worse reputation, worldwide, than anyone?
Marco.
I don't see much benefit from carrying on too much longer, but I was just perpetuating the myth of stereotypes. Take the Scottish independence thing.....that is driven by nationalistic motives. Still, we will agree to disagree.
I don't see much benefit from carrying on too much longer, but I was just perpetuating the myth of stereotypes.
Fair enough, but I think your view of Scotland, and Scottish people, is being inaccurately influenced (and biased) by misleading statistics, government propaganda, and also how both are often portrayed in public by the English media.
Take the Scottish independence thing.....that is driven by nationalistic motives. Still, we will agree to disagree.
Absolutely, and it's entirely understandable and justifiable when you've essentially been under English rule, and treated for decades as second-class citizens by successive Westminster controlled, English governments!;)
You still haven't told me you nationality, so what is it? :)
Just to be clear, so I'm not asking you for any info I wouldn't give, I was born in Glasgow, from Italian parents. Therefore, my ethnicity is Italian and my nationality is Scottish.
Marco.
British. As per my passport.
So what you are telling me is that you can tell my opinion on Scottish people now? I'll have you know that I am pretty well travelled due to my job, and that is living not visiting. I also work with a pretty diverse bunch of people so pointing any stereotyping my way won't wash.
What I don't understand is if Scots are so hard done by, why was the independence vote not a resounding yes?
British. As per my passport.
Nicely avoided.. I'll presume that you're English, unless you tell me otherwise. So where does the name "My" originate from? That, for me, doesn't seem likely as British in origin. FYI, I have an interest in usual names and where they come from:)
So what you are telling me is that you can tell my opinion on Scottish people now?
Well, we've been here before with the car thing. I can only judge you on what you write (and from that, form an impression accordingly), and so what you've written here so far on that subject forms the basis upon which my replies are based.
I'll have you know that I am pretty well travelled due to my job, and that is living not visiting. I also work with a pretty diverse bunch of people so pointing any stereotyping my way won't wash.
Well, I'm sorry, but based on what you've written so far on the subject, I'm afraid that doesn't show. From that, you seemingly have a rather jaundiced view of the Scots.
In any case, we clearly don't agree on a number of matters [and I suspect are very different people], so let's just end this now, by 'agreeing to disagree', and try and get the thread back on-topic, which if I remember correctly was supposed to be about car wheels!
Marco.
What I don't understand is if Scots are so hard done by, why was the independence vote not a resounding yes?
See above. I'm certainly not turning this into a political debate.
Marco.
Honestly, you should offer your skills to the highest bidder - 'jaundiced view of the Scots'? Wow, that's pretty special to make an assumption like that.
My name by the way is one I'd binned as a child, and adopted My as given to me by my childhood friends. I doubt there is any historical significance in it.
Honestly, you should offer your skills to the highest bidder - 'jaundiced view of the Scots'? Wow, that's pretty special to make an assumption like that.
You don't seem to get it. I'm judging you (or as you say "making an assumption") based on what you've written on the subject, and therefore how you're coming across. It would be interesting to ask others here what they think about that, and how you've conducted yourself in that respect, but we won't go there.
If that's not the REAL you, then it's not my fault. I can only judge you on the evidence you present. You may wish to consider the notion of 'we rarely see ourselves as we really are'.......
My name by the way is one I'd binned as a child, and adopted My as given to me by my childhood friends. I doubt there is any historical significance in it.
Thanks for that - and noted. Now, let's leave it there and move on; in fact I *insist* on it, and therefore any further off-topic reply from you on this thread will be deleted.
Marco.
Let it go Marco... :)
No harm done, it doesn't really matter...does it?
I don't think My is here to troll, and I'm sure he's adult enough to see both sides.
Maybe the guy doesn't want to give information, he doesn't have to after all surely?
I know several folk (some on here) who because of their job keep information sharing to a minimum.
Lets not go down this road, keep things friendly and on topic mibbay?

No problem with that, Gaz. However, 'My' hasn't withheld any information, having given me a perfectly acceptable explanation for the origins of his Christian name:)
