View Full Version : NEBO 6 set for November 2015
Yup, be good to see you there, mate, as you're a mainstay and integral part of NEBO, as far as I'm concerned :)
Marco.
Btw, and this needs to be said [and I promise will simply be a one-off remark], in reference to comments 'over the road'.... I note that 'Daniel Quinn' seeks to laugh at pictures of everyone else, but doesn't have the BALLS to post one of himself!
Even RD and Jammy have done so. That says it all about you, Mr 'Quinn': you're nothing but a pathetic, spineless, waste of space keyboard warrior, whom one day we all hope to meet and ridicule accordingly ;)
<Over and out>
Marco.
P.S Go and change some nappies, as that's about all you're good for!

Well, I know that you too ain't best friends but I think your avatar has gone way over the top...
Hi Marco you not changing your name to Mr Hilter and standing in the North Minehead by-election by any chance:) apologies to Monty Python

And have you read some of the stuff 'over there' others and him have written about me? OTT hardly scratches the surface... You reap what you sow.
I'll change my avatar back when I consider that enough piss taking has been done to Captain Chrome-Dome, who's very good at dishing it out, but not so good at taking it back ;)

Just don't think that anyone deserves Nazi symbolism used towards him/her. I don’t find it funny at all..
I can shed some light on why the Yammies didn't sound their best.
Bothe the Croft and KIN Pre Amps reverse phase and in the scramble to assemble the system, which took well over an hour, I forgot to reverse the speaker cables.
They still wouldn't have been perfect as I know there is still work to be done, but they defo would have sounded better than they did.
I know Jimbo did the same thing at NEBO5 and forgot to reverse the leads for his Croft.
Lesson learnt, will do better next time. :sorry:
Hi Ken, appreciate your knowledge on that bit of local history[asked you about at nebo6].Internet searches didn't help very much,no substitute for local knowledge, much appreciated, cheers again

You're a bad boy Ken :spank: Go and sit in the corner and write 100 times I must do better next time
Well at least you found the problem mate and it's unlikely that you'll make the same mistake twice . I'll hopefully get to hear the Yamahas in all their glory at NEBO 7 .:D
Good to meet you BTW and get a look at your fantastic system :)

It is generally accepted that absolute phase is not audible....
Indeed, Jez. However, in my experience (with the Croft) it appears to alter its sound in a weird and unnatural way, why I've no idea, but I know where Ken's coming from.
Ken, don't worry, mate, I've done that plenty of times myself when connecting and disconnecting equipment! :eyebrows:
The interesting thing is, I *always* notice eventually that something is up (but without knowing what it is) and that my system's off colour/not sounding right... You know that feeling, when you can't pinpoint anything majorly wrong, but you're just not enjoying the music?
Then I think, hang on a minute, did I reverse the speaker cables on the power amp... I go and check, and BINGO, find out that I hadn't. Then fix it, and instantly normal service is resumed! :)

Absolute phase on recordings is completely random.... so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one ;)
Sure. I can only report what I hear - and have heard repeatedly on numerous occasions :)
Marco.
Marco/Jez - I think they sound different when I swap the speaker wires round and better when reversed. I don't think I'm kidding myself about that but couldn't back it up in any way, just what me lug holes are telling me.
Mik Rik - Had a look at the site this morning Mick when I walked the dog, just to refresh my memory. It came down and straddled the stream. Engines were on full throttle and went 25 feet underground smashing through the main sewer. Wreckage and the fire ball crossed the stream and killed the horses in the field on the South bank. This field now has houses with Gardens backing on to the stream.
In case anyone is wondering,in Jan 1971,an R.A.F. Vulcan crashed in Wingate[Station Town] Co.Durham.I was in school in nearby Peterlee - Ken was a helluva lot closer and was an eye witness.I have always wondered exactly where the crash site was [turned out to be a few hundred yds away from where I thought. Thanks to Ken for helping, just goes to show it's not only boring to some electronics you get to learn at these meetings.Sorry to divert the thread

Ditto (with my Croft). It's an effect you're aware of existing, but can't quite pin down the reason for :)
Marco.
second thoughts,is OOPS just 1 channel?

Yup , thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was great to meet some of the troops :)

That and the Raspberry Pi! :)
Just imagine a nice cheap system: RPi > Slagle > [some good little active speakers]. All for, what, less than £500?
Thought the Goldpoint also did well (both it and the Slagle had their respective strengths), but in the context of the test system, the Slagle undoubtedly edged it.
As I said in my review, that wasn't too surprising, as I'd spent some weeks, leading up to the event, 'voicing' the Goldpoint specifically to suit my system, which has a rather different balance from that of the test system at NEBO
Marco.
I thought that too. I found it impossible to spot any subtleties but in the overall presentation Ali's effort 'grabbed' you from the off and the Goldpoint was a bit more 'airy fairy'.
None of the contenders were sufficiently 'better' than what I've got already though, which was comforting ;)
Lol - I like "airy fairy", in my system ;)
For me, it was more the mid and bottom end, where the obvious differences were: the Slagle was a bit warmer and fuller sounding (but in a good way), and the Goldpoint, a little colder and leaner. However, in my system, with big vintage Tannoys, it just sounds right! :)
Marco.
Reading this thread, I've been thinking about the (sonic) difficulties of demo'ing kit in a big function room. From the pics, it seems that everyone set up their systems around the boundary of the room, where the electric sockets. I was wondering if there would be any benefits to going into the middle of the room, and firing back towards the walls? Sort of create an oblong 'island' of kit. You'd need to safely supply electricity of course, but using that layout, it should be possible for each set-up to be firing at a wall (say) 15 feet away. With seats in the correct place, perhaps this would better replicate domestic conditions? Anyone any experience of doing it that way?

Peter, that sir is an excellent suggestion. Should i use the same venue for NEBO 7 i will give that a go. Many thanks to you for that.

Can I just ask if the majority of people were happy with the venue at Nebo 6? I have been looking at some alternatives though up to now I am a little unsure of things.
I can't help thinking we got too ambitious with having four systems at a time set up last time and I think we could have set up a little differently. Your thoughts please. It is very important.
A better room from an acoustics point of view would be good but not a deal breaker. I think we did have some problems with the raised floor area not showing speakers at their best.
The downstairs room at the Windmill was better, solid floor and the dimensions large enough that any potential room issues were pretty much banished.

Can't fault the actual venue in terms of drinks , food etc . Steve . However I do think a more conventional type of room ( oblong or square ) would show the systems , particularly the speakers at their best .
Happy New Year to everyone.
Yes, I have to agree about the room shape.
The split floor wasted a lot of space, we could have done what we did in a far smaller conventional rectangular room, with the benefit of better acoustics in the smaller space, at least more like those in a home environment, which is what we tend to voice the gear in.
As for the number of set ups, the more the better as far as I'm concerned. Makes for less down time, allways someone ready to play. My system and Gordons as well, took over an hour to set up. That wouldn't work if there were say just two set ups, Steve, remember how well things worked at Owston with about eight set ups on the go?
The Venue for Nebo6 served its purpose, but I think it could be bettered in terms of showing the gear at its best. It did however score well for good parking, nearby accomodation and on-site food and drink.

Agree the room could be better, but you'll never find one of sufficient size that allows the systems to sound how they do at home. If only for the fact that SPL levels are far higher. Bear in mind we've been trying for years at the Owston do's to do just that. Can't be done, so I would just worry about sufficient room for all those that turn up, and enjoy the day!
An alternative, could be several interconnecting smaller rooms.
Accoustically, the two smaller rooms we used upstairs at the Windmill were not bad, the stairs were a pain for lugging gear up though. We have lost that venue but something similar on the ground floor might be good, two set ups in each room could be enough to keep things flowing.
I will keep my eyes and ears open for anything we might want to consider. I know of a church Hall, but alcohol would be a no no and accomodation is no where near. like Ali points out, it's not an easy set of criterion to match, so some compramise may have to be made.
Steve - The Rugby club below where "Steetleys" used to be has a poster up saying "Free function room" and I believe the other Rugby club on the main coast road north of Hartlepool General Hospital does the same. Could be worth checking these out.

Yep, we've also tried that, but for me it takes something away from the the social aspect of the day IMHO.
I could suggest any number of potential venues in the Gateshead/Newcastle area ranging from working men's club function rooms, an arts centre, or for a small/medium do a professional recording studio owned by a friend (bring our own refreshments obviously). Of course that might mean relocating NEBO from its Teesside roots which might not be popular, but may make it more accessible for those coming via train etc.
If you want me to explore these, let me know.
Personally, I don't think there was anything much wrong with the last venue, if next time the space allocated was used, shall we say, rather more 'productively'... Remember how good that system sounded by the dance floor! ;)

I wasnt that impressed with the Schooner, but it was ok as a stop gap.
The electrickery supply voltage was well down and I managed to trip the supply when I first powered up, a couple of the mains outlets behind the stuff for sale were dead and of course the roof leaked and needed a bucket 2 feet from my right speaker if folks hadn't noticed.
I thought the split level did us no favours and think a smaller flat room would be better. We could rotate maybe four set ups, one in each corner, or maybe as was suggested, set up as an island in the middle with speakers firing outwards towards the walls or corners and us moving round the island to each set up?
This arangement might give a bit of bass reinforcement and make up for trying to fill a larger space than our gear is designed for. There were several large boxes/drivers at the last session which struggled, mine included. I would like to think that the venue would allow people with smaller stand mounts not be put off from bringing their gear and being able to put on a good show.
Its very challenging but I still think its worth having a look at what else is available. :)
The blue bell at aklam have a good size rear downstairs function room and some decent smaller ones upstairs, i know they charge but i dont think its much.. They have hotel rooms too.. I bet a good deal could be done
Cheers
Steve
Which Aklam is that Steve?
There are several including one in Middlesbrough and one near York.
