View Full Version : NEBO 6 set for November 2015
No takers yet Steve?
If no one else offers we can use my turntable.
The cable is delicate though as I have continuous lengths of solid Silver wire from the cartridge tags, to the RCA plugs that go into the phono stage and they are very thin and easily break. I've snapped them twice myself fiddling behind my Pre-Amp in the rack, but with a bit of care I'm sure we will manage.
Di i need to provide a turntable for the phono stage bake off or is someone taking one we can use?
I would like to come. I can bring a turntable too. Ok?
Hi Norman,
Could you do me a favour, please, and put a proper geographical location on your profile? Cheers! :)
Marco.

Steve, just a wee suggestion, might be an idea to put up the location and postcode of the venue again, to save folk trawling back through the thread, and times for folk to turn up maybe?

Any thoughts on me bringing a deck to try?
Hey Colonel. Whatcha got?
I wasn't going to bring a turntable as I'd thought plenty people were bringing theirs.
I can bring my modified sl1210 if someone wants to bring an MC cartridge/headshell as I only have MM/HOMC.
She ain't pretty but she did the Kessel run in 12 parsecs.

Bring what ya got... there nebo meetings are friendly get togethers of enthusiasts and I'm sure new members will be welcome.
BTW I just want to say a "big up" (lol arn't I all "Street") for Steve, Floyddroid for organising this... how you manage to do this on top of being an NHS slave I don't know (I had an ex who was a "modern matron-community" so i know what it is to work for the NHS, I got the stress second hand... ;)
Yup, looking forward to the day, good music and plenty of toys to play with. :)
I could bring an SME 30/V ?

As suggested here is a reminder of the venue etc for NEBO6.............

Actually, thinking about it, the SME 30 is in the loft and will be a bit of a pita to get out, given the wealth of crap in there at the moment. Maybe I'll just bring a Technics SL-1000 with an SME 12R and a few cartridges to play with?
What SUT's and phonostages are goin to be there?

I expect there'll be plenty of choices there with phono stages from Croft, Firebottle and NVA being played out. Last time Nick Gorham (lurcher) brought one of his creations and I think Jez Arkless is bringing one too.
There will also be the valve MM phono stage built into my Croft, and I could bring my Paul Hynes SUT/PSU if you like? :)
Just to outline the kit I'll defo be bringing:
Heavily-modified Croft Charisma-X preamp.
Goldpoint SA4M-47 passive preamp.
LDR passive preamp (in some DIY casing).
Some cables.

Nice choice of kit Marco. Look forward to hearing it. I know you'll always have a soft spot for the Croft but which is your current favourite of that bunch?
Ha - well it's interesting that you ask, Rich... I'm currently listening to the Croft again, after many weeks of my ears being 'attuned' to the sound of passives, so that's rather interesting and informative, to say the least. The differences really hit you (especially between active and passive) when you return to a 'known reference'!
I'm also in the process of doing a write-up of my experiences with the passives in question, and what I've heard from the Croft, in comparison (along with NVA SSC/Belden 1800F and Klotz MC5000s), so all will be revealed on the Goldpoint thread in Blank Canvas in due course :)
Marco.
Be nice to hear your passives Marco with my 300B SET and Steven's Edingdales...?
Look forward to the write up Marco. Mind you I might be able to write the listening comparison myself if you bring all that gear along next saturday:)

Will bring the Slagle AVC passive, two box Firebottle phono stage and Denon HA1000 head amp.
If vinyljunky Steve brings the Icon Audio passive and Macca brings his NVA we'll have a plethora of passive preamps lol.
Be nice to hear your passives Marco with my 300B SET and Steven's Edingdales...?
We'll defo do that, dude. The Goldpoint is still somewhat 'work in progress', but still sounds excellent (at least it does here, and in Ian and Duncan's system). However, ultimately I want to have it fitted with Z-Foils throughout. I suspect when that's done it will be stunning! :)
Marco.
Look forward to the write up Marco. Mind you I might be able to write the listening comparison myself if you bring all that gear along next saturday:)
Indeed, Jim. Please do that anyway, as it's always useful reading things from someone else's perspective, especially as you'll be evaluating everything in a totally different system.
Marco.

Yup - I always viewed this forthcoming NEBO as a being a 'Preamp Special' :)

Yes, it looks that way. Great line up for the day in store. All corners of this crazy pastime will be represented. We can also add to the list my Benchmark DAC1 HDR which will be handling pre duties in my rig.

No, Norman is my second name :)
Should mention I am bringing the NVA P90SA passive pre and the Firebottle AIR power amp.
Good job it is a big room - if it was still in the old place upstairs once we got all the gear in there would be no room for us.

Chaps, which turntable shall we use for the phono stage bake off?
Chaps, which turntable shall we use for the phono stage bake off?
More importantly, which cartridge are you going to use?
It would be surprising if one cartridge would suit all of the phono-stages and changing cartridges nullifies any direct comparison between them.

The one I'm bringing is MC only...
Floyddroid
08-11-2015, 20:45
And which speakers?
Well, my view about this is that organisation is good but more often than not spontaneity can be better. Maybe the phono bake off needs to happen with the tools available at the time with the best of what we have. My vote would have been March's 1210 beast cos it is flipping lovely and the Edingdale speakers. From a speaker point of view though there will be no shortage of choice or quality. I'm starting to get rather excited about it. Keeping things flowing will be the success of the day methinks.

Not sure at the moment but all of the phono stages are set for mc. Probably Marco's Decca. What are you bringing along Norman?
See how things pan out and maybe take a straw poll on the system for the phono bake off?

Most likely a Technics SL-1000 (SP-10 mkII in an Obsidian plinth) with an SME M12R and a couple of cartridges, probably a Fidelity Research FR-7 and not sure about the other, but perhaps a Koetsu Rosewood Signature. The Koetsu has 0.4mV output, but the FR-7 is only around 0.15mV, so may need a SUT (I can bring a SUT, if neccessary)

Not sure how much time there will be to play the SL-1000, but I could bring a couple more cartridges (already set up for alignment in headshells) if you think there would be time to try them? I would only have to adjust VTF, which would take 30 seconds or so.

I don't want to be responsible for infringements of peoples civil liberties and some folks simply don't like to be photographed. Snapping the gear is not a problem, fill yer boots. :D

Yeah, as said, get some pics up on the forums of your gear if you have them, we can all keep our eyes peeled.
I'm also on a few local buy/sell music gear Facebook groups and I'll put the word on them too.
Good to get the word out, Social Media/word of mouth is a good thing in cases like this.
Burly feckers mind to have half inched the Eddies.
Not may of them about so as has been said, watch them on classifieds.

There's some strong competition there but I'm hoping they'll give a good account of themselves.
Colin's speakers are going to be special if the last time I heard them is anything to go by. As for Ken's Yamahas, well we've all seen how much love and attention he gives his kit so it's anyone's guess what we'll all prefer in the day.
Although they're fighting in a different class the NVA Cubettes will be a plucky little bantam amongst some of the heavyweights too.

Would certainly be contacting c convertors in case it appears at one of their outlets. Much of the stuff is either fairly rare to bespoke so not everyday items for any shop. If its been stolen to order you alas may never see it for years...have you had any workmen or visitors around lately?

Bloody hell, I wouldn't want to be him if he was the culprit. Vigilante justice audiophile style, we'd tie him to a chair and conduct a double blind cable comparison on him using only Diana Krall music.
He'd confess anything after a few hours of that.

I believe that the mobile number, as shown on the ad banner, is Floydie's. Look forward to seeing you all there - should be a good one!

It's here now. Hail and torrential rain earlier. Wind is up and temperature plummeting.
Its calmed down up here now..still cold though. Winds right down rain n snow stopped.. Forcadt up here is to be better tomorrow so it must be moving south.
We had a lovely sunny day in Wrexham, but it was (still is) bitterly cold!
Nice now, snuggling up in front of a roaring log fire, just about to pour myself a glass of The Balvenie Double Wood, 12 year-old malt, courtesy of an early Xmas pressie from Snapper :)

Pic should show unless your comp has an aversion to Imageshack ;)
Yes, the water has to be mouldy, of course, with 'bits in' :eyebrows:

Sorry to hear of the burglary and illness :steam:
Also sorry to add that I've returned home from the Midlands this evening and my wife has taken ill. Going to have to miss out tomorrow :-(
I was bringing a turntable, so hopefully someone else can step in to cover that. Apologies for the late notice. If I can get there for a couple of hours later in the day, I will, but it's dependant on how my wife is.

Disappointed not to be getting to this, as domestic arrangements have intervened.
Good luck with the event, and post lots of reports, please :D
Enjoy the day guys, and don't forget the write up and photos for those of us who cannot make it.
Just got home and unloaded my gear, think we all had a great day. Excellent banter, fabulous sounds and worth the effort for Steve's air guitar alone! Nice mix of new faces and regulars. Great to meet you all.
Hope all travelling have a safe journey home and there'll be pics tomorrow. Now to bed.

Truly horrendous bike ride home in torrential rain... can you claim under the trades description act for "water proofs"?
Great day though and nice to put faces to forum aliases and to meet Marco and the Scottish Mafia!
Problems ensued through the mains being 228V on the day! I'll let others add to that..
Highlight? Sorry can't remember who owned them but the Linkwitz open baffle speakers with (AFAIK) digital active crossovers pretty much trounced everything else... My own contribution in the form of my new prototype phono stage unfortunately didn't seem overly synergistic with the only system it was tried in and there was only one turntable with a MC present... It sounded stunning here the night before so not sure if it was the very low mains or just an unfortunate matching of equipment...
Lovely to see some old faces and meet some new ones and a HUGE thanks to Steve (Progmiester) for organising the event... even enjoyed the "special interest" music ;)
I had a wee continuation of events at my friends place (the one who wouldn't come along to nebo even though he lives 1/2 a mile away... bit agoraphobic). Anyone heard of an Australian valve amp maker called Melody Audio? Very nice indeed! Built like a brick shit house and sounded really nice. speakers were interesting to. He had finally built something with the Goodmans Axiom drivers he had in storage from new for the last 45 years... I was surprised to say the least at the sound of these. I expected them to be total crap but they were actually most impressive! They really need a tweeter, even though they are full range drivers, and we sorted out some ex Castle Acoustics tweeters and discussed crossover requirements. He's going to add them on an open baffle above the main cab. Went away with pockets full of valves and nice binding posts ;)

There was a NEBO mug as a prize on the day which Steve forgot to mention. So right at the 11th hour it was quickly determined that Gordon won this for the sheer scale and effort behind his contribution to the day. I don't think anyone would argue with that.
A few pics of Gordon's amazing rig. I'll second all of Alan's comments on this. Fabulous bass and scale.

I am also in the recovery stage. Only had a bottle of wine, must be getting old.
Best NEBO yet. Massive thanks again to Steve 'Progmeister' Petch for organising this and doing the whole 'Jools Holland' thing. If you imagine these events as solemn and sombre affairs you couldn't be more wrong. It is more like a really good stag night with great music and hi-fi. Good to see everyone again and to meet Brian, Gaz, Jezz and Colin for the first time.
Not sure I can recall everything at the moment but I agree with Jezz the highlight was the open baffle active system using no less then 4 Benchmark DACS and 2 massive Nakamichi 7 channel power amps.
'You can never get a hi-fi system to approach the dynamics of a live performance' is something you often hear said. (You'll have to imagine the adenoid-laden voice). Well, think again! Add on to that a truly holographic soundstage (which would probably have been even better given a more optimal set up than the room allowed). You recall the Hair Bair Bunch and their invisible motorcycle? This was like an invisible band playing right in front of you.
Absolutely not pipe and slippers, though, This was a very uncompromising system. If you heard some of the crappy-sounding but mega-expensive systems at the Cranage Hall show in the summer well this system is what they should have sounded like - but at a fraction of the cost.
Colin Topps showed his new Norge stand mount speakers with a system comprising A Nick Gorham transformer passive, Conrad Johnson valve power amp and one of those Dutch valve cd players. Y'all know I am not keen on small speakers or valves being in CD players but it was a quality and involving sound. We also had a listen to the same system with his much larger Edingdale speakers which had no problems filling the very large room with excellent sounds, although I think that was later.
Ken (Qwin) showed a work in progress which is his active Yamaha NS1000M system, again powered by one of the big Nakamichi 7 channel amps. No-one told me that the Nakamichi logo on these things lights up white and red when powered up or I would have bought one when they were knocking them out at 400 quid. It is so cool. I thought Ken was getting a really good sound but he is even fussier than me and reckons more tweaking is needed.
Rich B brought along his beautifully restored JBL monitors - the cabs on these speakers are so well restored it is breathtaking. We just couldn't get these speakers to sound like they should, I suspect due to a variety of contributing factors, but we did not really have time to do the extensive hands-on work with them that I think would have sorted it. He also brought along the NVA Cubettes (?) which are little semi-omnis about the size of a Wharfedale Diamond. These were pretty impressive even playing some sort of K-Tel 'All Our Yesterdays' compilation (no-one seemed to know who put that on). Out of the box sound and very easy to listen to.
Passive pre-amp bake off = this sort of got going spontaneously (it is that sort of event) using the Edingdale Speakers and the Conrad-Johnson power amp - I think the source was a Squeezebox Touch. I'd rather we had used a more neutral power amp than the CJ which although it is lovely sounding is a touch 'valvey'. There were so many passives involved I'm not sure I can recall all of them but none of them failed to impress nor did any suffer from the lack of 'attack' 'slam' 'drive' 'balls' 'grip' (perm any 3 from 5) but for me the power amp made it impossible to spot any differences that existed, as they were subtle at best.
Gaz had brought along his enormous Nick Gorham single ended valve power amp but we had issues with it motorboating = apparently due to the mains which at tea-time had dipped down to 180 volts. Someone at National Grid obviously needs a kick up the arse. When it was briefly working (through the Edingdales and with a Densen active pre) - it sounded amazing - we tried it much later when the mains had recovered and it again proved its worth although it could not drive the speakers loud enough in the huge room for some of the crowd - I thought it was fine but obviously I listen at whisper levels compared to these folk - no names! ;)
The best part of these events is late on when the all star system gets assembled (after a little trial and error) and the vinyl comes out. Turntable was Steve's Pioneer PL71 with I think a Denon DL103 MC, Ali's 2 box Firebottle Phono and Denon head amp and Slagle transformer passive pre into the Radford STA15 and the Edingdales. I've heard the Radford before and this only confirmed my opinion that it has to be the best sounding power amp on the planet, albeit a little power-limited at 15 wpc. Loads of good music got played including Steve's 'special interest' selection.
That is all I can recall for now, I'm going for a lie down :) - Absolutely top-draw day out.

How about the phono pre bake-off? Was there a winner?
How about the phono pre bake-off? Was there a winner?
Not really fair to say a winner as such but for me, Ali's Firebottle with all his mods had it.
Sadly the NVA stage didn't get an outing as there was an unidentified issue which led to the loss of the right channel output. I won't say anymore on this other than I tried various preamps and cables and couldn't figure it out. The owner will be speaking to its maker to get to the bottom of it.

You should have rigged a direct line from Hartlepool nuclear power station :D
When I worked in the industry years ago, the government had a strict policy of siting nuclear stations in very remote locations, in case of catastrophic accidents. For some reason, they made an exception for Teesside ...
They probably figured that even if there was a catastrophic accident no-one would notice the difference....

228V not 180V. Still the lowest I've seen it!
Good write-up, Martin. I concur with many of your observations, so will quote from your post, in order to add mine:
Best NEBO yet. Massive thanks again to Steve 'Progmeister' Petch for organising this and doing the whole 'Jools Holland' thing. +1. A big thanks again to Steve, Rich and all who made this NEBO possible. It's always fun and educational not only to listen to new kit, but assess your own in a totally different context! Great meeting all the lads again, and for the first time Jez and rossman (Paul), plus the two local lads, the names of whom I forget, who popped along too for a while.
'You can never get a hi-fi system to approach the dynamics of a live performance' is something you often hear said. (You'll have to imagine the adenoid-laden voice). Well, think again! I agree about Gordon's system. I mentioned on his Gallery thread that I rated the design of the speakers, and again my gut feeling was proven correct. They produce a very 'live' and believable, musical sound, which was right up my street. However, there was much more to the success of his system than just the speakers, which clearly represented a culmination (although still work in progress) of a fundamental understanding of what he wanted to achieve, and how to achieve it - and the superb sound we all heard and enjoyed, ably demonstrated that!
Well done, mate :)
Absolutely not pipe and slippers, though, This was a very uncompromising system. If you heard some of the crappy-sounding but mega-expensive systems at the Cranage Hall show in the summer well this system is what they should have sounded like - but at a fraction of the cost.
Totally agree - and it highlights the difference between mega-expensive (commercial) systems, which are expensive for mostly the wrong reasons, and a carefully thought out and assembled one, by someone with a passion for reproducing recorded music to the highest standard, and a desire to get the biggest bang for his buck. That is precisely why we advocate that approach on AoS - simply because it works!
As you said, the Eddies were the one constant, throughout the day, and no-one really said much about them, but more often than not were chosen to accompany the equipment demonstrated, which for me, says it all: they simply did their job, without any fuss or fanfare. I have to say, however, that at £1500 these speakers are an unmitigated BARGAIN, and do things sonically and musically, that most £5k commercial speakers don't, so keep up the good work, Colin!
Ken (Qwin) showed a work in progress which is his active Yamaha NS1000M system, again powered by one of the big Nakamichi 7 channel amps. I thought Ken was getting a really good sound but he is even fussier than me and reckons more tweaking is needed.
Yes, and he's right. I enjoyed Ken's system, but for me is definitely still 'work in progress', on a number of levels. Ken and I discussed that over lunch, and he agrees. The potential for his system to create a superb sound is definitely there, but in terms of the Yammies, and their respective external crossovers, he's got a bit to do yet until he gets them singing, as he eventually managed with his 66s. However, Ken has good ears, and like Gordon, a fundamental understanding of what he wants, so I'm sure he'll get there soon.
Rich B brought along his beautifully restored JBL monitors - the cabs on these speakers are so well restored it is breathtaking.
+1. Paul's done a totally outstanding job on them, carefully matching up the grain on the wood, etc, and the net result is stunning!
We just couldn't get these speakers to sound like they should, I suspect due to a variety of contributing factors, but we did not really have time to do the extensive hands-on work with them that I think would have sorted it.
Yeah, you could hear their potential, but something was causing a midrange 'suck out', such that vocals sounded as if they were being sung through a blanket - very weird indeed. I don't know enough about the system concerned, or how the JBLs have been modified internally, to comment properly on what the issue might have been. The room acoustics may also have had an effect.
However, with my apologies to Rich, it's the first time I've ever heard a pair of JBLs sound dull and boring - almost as if their inherent 'fun factor' had been sucked out of them. Fairly early on in the demo, it was suggested that they might sound better inverted, on the partnering stands, so that the tweeters and midrange units were on top of the bass drivers. That certainly helped in creating more treble energy and midrange clarity, but there was still something amiss that I couldn't pinpoint, but which I'm sure could be easily fixed.
The rest of Rich's system was excellent, in particular his Pioneer PL-71, fitted with a stock DL-103. The Pioneer always impresses me whenever I hear it, and later in the evening, once the JBLs had been replaced for the Eddingdales, and the amplification/MM phono stage changed to the Croft (which I'd brought), and combined with Ali's modded Denon HA-1000 head amp, along with the truly excellent Radford power amp, went on to produce some stunning sounds, showing just how good a T/T it is.
It's really quite obvious to anyone with a good pair of ears how much better the PL-71 is, compared with a stock SL-1200/1210. Used in that context, where its abilities were fully showcased, quite frankly, it's in a different league. Apologies to my fellow Techie fans, but it's simply the truth, and only by spending a reasonable sum modifying the Technics, in key areas, is it capable of rivalling, or outperforming, the Pioneer. Rich, I wouldn't touch that T/T, if I were you.
There, I'd have to disagree, as I thought there were quite marked differences between all of the passives demonstrated - although I would agree that none were 'broken', but all had their strengths and weaknesses.
For me, in the context of the test system (belonging to Colin), Ali's (TVC?) edged it overall, producing a lovely big '3D sound', with superb 'air and space' surrounding voices and instruments, and tonally, pretty much spot on. Perhaps just a touch of excess bass and midrange warmth, but overall a very addictive and musical listen - and most of all a STUPIDLY cheap bargain!
Next for me was the Goldpoint, which IMO, produced the tightest and most textured bass, and had superior 'attack', leading edge definition and overall detail retrieval, compared with the TVC, however in the test system, with Colin's smaller stand-mount speakers on demo, was a little bass-light. This wasn't a surprise, however, as I'd just spent the last month, or so, 'voicing' it for use in my system, with huge 15" Tannoys, which of course have a somewhat different presentation from Colin's little stand-mounts...
I certainly don't need more bass in my system, so (after recent resistor experiments) had deliberately chosen the Z-foils, for their crisp and detailed sound, married with their 'snappy' low-end, although one that in the wrong set-up could contribute to a slightly anaemic presentation. I suspect, had the warmer and fuller sounding AN Tants been left in, they would've suited the sonic signature of the test system much better.
However, all of that was still very useful and interesting to hear, as it fully demonstrates the advantages of fine-tuning the sonic presentation of equipment, via internal component 'rolling'. Here at home, the Goldpoint sounds spot on, as indeed was demonstrated when I put it back into the system again today.
Next best, for me, in the context of the test system, was Macca's NVA, which produced a very solid and purposeful, musical sound - one which couldn't really be faulted in any major way (perhaps a slight opaqueness to vocals, purely in comparison, though, with the best here), but to some others and my ears, lacked the finesse and addictive 'hear through' quality of the Slagle and Goldpoint. We're splitting hairs here, however, and in most other contexts, especially when the NVA is used in its manufacturer's intended one, I'm sure that such things wouldn't be noticed, or perhaps not even present.
Last for me, but not by much, was the LDR, which sounded good, but for me didn't really gel in the test system. I get better results with this at home, but yesterday it sounded somewhat 'fuzzy' and unnatural, at the top end, although the midrange was beautifully lucid and communicative. Bass was tight, punchy and extended. Having listened for a while now to the LDR, my thoughts are that in many ways it is excellent, but undoubtedly a little coloured sounding, although in a pleasantly addictive and inoffensive way.
As ever, however, with all these passives, results obtained are massively system dependent.
Gaz had brought along his enormous Nick Gorham single ended valve power amp but we had issues with it motorboating = apparently due to the mains which at tea-time had dipped down to 180 volts. Someone at National Grid obviously needs a kick up the arse. When it was briefly working (through the Edingdales and with a Densen active pre) - it sounded amazing - we tried it much later when the mains had recovered and it again proved its worth although it could not drive the speakers loud enough in the huge room for some of the crowd - I thought it was fine but obviously I listen at whisper levels compared to these folk - no names! ;)
Lol - no idea who you could possibly mean
Agreed, though. Gaz's amp, which Nick designed, sounded utterly sublime for the few minutes it worked, as a result of the mains problems described, and you could clearly hear its talents, making (sorry Colin) the Conrad Johnson sound contrived and rather synthetic, in comparison. From the brief bit I heard, in conjunction with Gaz's Densen preamp, it was obvious this is a truly top-notch valve amp, emanating in no small part, I suspect, from the talents of the superb (and huge) hand-wound transformers.
I know from experience, with my copper amp, how much (when done well) that aspect of valve amp design matters!
Later, when the mains supply of the venue had come 'back up to speed', as it were, and I had a more extended listen to Gary's amp, my initial thoughts were simply reinforced. It has that 'effortless musicality', 'open-window' effect, and ability to draw you into the heart of the music, which only the best amplifiers out there of any description can deliver, and ably demonstrates once again, that it is impossible to produce truly great valve amplifiers on the cheap. Furthermore, this sounded like no other single-ended 300B amp I've heard before, possessing the tightest, most solid and extended bass I've heard from the best KT88/120 push-pulls.
The only comment I'd make, and it's purely a personal one, which I've always held in reference to the single-ended vs. push-pull debate, is that whilst 7.5W may be fine in most home environments, clearly it isn't outside of that, when much larger rooms are used. If it were my amp, I wouldn't want it running out of steam in any bake-off where I was demonstrating it to others. Not that that was a problem yesterday, as everyone understood and accepted the limitations involved, but just purely in my opinion, I'd always want a bit more power on tap, which is why I use what I do.
Oh, and one other thing, as far as Gary is concerned, in terms of his decision about whether to go with a passive preamp or not, in my view any answer to that, based on what was heard yesterday, was totally inconclusive. Therefore, my advice would be to hold onto his Densen for the time being (which undeniably works superbly well with his valve amp) and wait until I can visit and bring the Goldpoint and LDR round, and hopefully also Ali can bring his Slagle. Only by listening to the results of that in his own system will he be able to arrive at a proper conclusion.
The best part of these events is late on when the all star system gets assembled (after a little trial and error) and the vinyl comes out. Agreed, although as superb as the Radford was, showing just how good it is by today's standards (and I loved it), I'd hesitate to call it "the best sounding power amp on the planet" ;)
Also, I have to say (biased hat firmly off), I thought that when the Firebottle, as good as it was, went in after the Croft, it didn't quite scale the same heights, musically. However, that's only to be expected, given the huge difference in cost!
All in all, a superb event which, as ever, only serves to both strengthen and extend the AoS community. Thanks again, Steve - here's to the next one!
Marco.
Great to be able to attend another AOS NEBO event which I felt was up to the same standard as the previous one. A big thank you to Steve:cool: for organising this event again!
This will definitely become a firm fixture for me as it not only allows the opportunity to meet some really great people who are extremely knowledgeable but it also provides the perfect forum to listen to a wide range of equipment and music in one go.
The loose structure and amiable environment of the day really does make for both an informative and very relaxed event unlike some of the big professionally organised corporate shows. It has the feel of going round to your mates to listen to their stereo and as with all good events no one really wants to leave especially when the vinyl comes out and a suitably appropriate system is cobbled together by general consensus:) and then everyone just wants to listen to the music!
Martin and Marco have I feel captured the days equipment evaluation with very good write ups which I can identify very much with regarding the systems and equipment I heard so I won,t add any more thoughts other than I am always surprised at how good relatively humble and old kit can sound.
You just need the right combination and synergy!
Roll on NEBO 7!
Firebottle

, I thought that when the Firebottle, as good as it was, went in after the Croft, it didn't quite scale the same heights, musically. However, that's only to be expected, given the huge difference in cost!
Ah but you weren't comparing it to my best offering, the phono section of the KIN preamp. That is rather better than Ali's two box.
Must get it up to you for a personal bake off :)
Marco, as much as I wish the Pioneer PL-71 were mine. Steve is actually the owner. Took a while for it to come on song but it did eventually.
I totally get what you mean wrt to the JBLs. There was something about that room seemed to suck the mid out of them whatever we tried and it certainly wasn't the amps, the A40s do this exceedingly well.
Ken's system was also a bit restrained in a similar way. Hindsight being what it, I wish I'd moved mine to the dancefloor where we had those missions rocking with the zz top later on.
Good write up though.

Yup, Alan, noted. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to listen to the KIN - not sure if anyone did? If so, perhaps they could comment? You'd be welcome anytime to visit. Always happy to host the company of good folks and hear some superb kit, whilst listening to quality choons!
Incidentally, something else worth mentioning is that it was completely impossible to assess the gear Jez had brought with him (phono stage and head amp, I think), as they were put into Rich's system to demonstrate, when the JBLs were being used, and so nothing of note could be concluded from that.
Bit of a shame that, as I was looking forward to hearing what his stuff could do!
Marco.
Hi Rich,
Marco, as much as I wish the Pioneer PL-71 were mine. Steve is actually the owner. Took a while for it to come on song but it did eventually.
Ah - cheers for the clarification! Well then, Steve has an excellent turntable on his hands, and one I would leave alone now and simply enjoy :)

Fair enough, and agree that Ken's system, housed in the same part of the room, was similarly 'challenged'. Like I said, I don't know enough about all the different bits in question to surmise what the problem was. Like you say though, I suspect much of it was the room. That system playing ZZ Top boogied like a bastard!
Who's was it?

I admire you guys... I don't think I could judge differences with such a difference in kit/room in comparison to your own personal space.
I certainly couldn't make a decision between which bit of kit was best but more like have an overall opinion that 'it sounded good/different'
Coming out of your comfort zone needs to be handled carefully with huge amount of discipline.
Great write up btw, Marco..

Cheers, matey. That's a very good point. I've never been afraid of that (or in being subjected to learning curves), as in reality, it's the only way of knowing how well your kit stands up to scrutiny in the real world - i.e one outside the confines of your own ears and room.
In that respect, it's easy to kid yourself on about how good the stuff you use actually is. However, quite often during these events, one can take something positive from them (even if things don't quite work out as planned), which perhaps you wouldn't have discovered, had you not stepped out of your comfort zone :)

Just want to say a big thanks to everyone for the kind words about the Linkwitz LX521.4 speakers and associated gear - credit goes to Siegfried Linkwitz for an excellent design that can be created for a reasonable cost. He's 80 next week and still contributing his knowledge to the hifi world.
I agree best NEBO yet, with some great gear - would have loved to have heard more from the 300B amp - the bit of jazz vocals before the mains voltage problem was discovered (thanks Jez) was just sublime. Have to agree with Marco - this was the most solid bass I've heard from a 300B amp.
As usual some great new music to go out and buy - Snark Puppy was right up my street - thanks Rich. And Ali - that direct to disc big band LP sounded wonderful.
Steve- thanks for the mug (will post a picture of your artwork). And thanks most of all for organising another great get together.
Gordon
I thoroughly enjoyed the few hours that I got to spend at NEBO and it was good to meet people and put faces to names. Vinyljunky didn't seem to be put off enjoying the day despite his troubles. I had a good chat with most people but particularly appreciated the discussion with Gordon about his experiences in Jamaica and as a Reggae DJ in the US. I have to agree that his system sounded wonderful, after the live Jeff Beck track I stopped short of applauding (although one person did).
I really enjoyed the Edingdales too and when it came to the passives my preference was for Colin's, whichever one that was, although all of them sounded excellent and I would have been happy to own any of them if I was in the market for one.
Yup, Alan, noted. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to listen to the KIN - not sure if anyone did? If so, perhaps they could comment?
Wasn't the KIN hooked up in Kens system? although I only think it was used for a short time while I was there so not long enough to assess it properly. I think it was used for the first play of the "specialist music" which I enjoyed btw, I didn't get the Hump with it anyway (thanks to Steve Vinyljunky for the pun). Listening to Ali's 2 box firebottle just confirmed to me that, if I had the money I would go for a Firebottle + as Alan's phono stages do seem produce a sound that I like.
I'll definitely be back in the future :)

Here's a couple of motley pics of that jumble table lash up which led to the air guitars and middle aged moshing we witnessed....
Ken's Sugden A21 CD player and Proton power amp with the luvverley big green VU meters, Steve's Mission 752 floor standard and a Firebottle KIN preamp. Dunno about the speaker cables but the interconnects were Macca's SSC.
That's what I love about NEBO, surprises like these!
The speaker cables in the lash up were Van Damme Blue 6mm.
The Firebottle KIN performed really well in the lash up, line stage used for CD, thrown together with a mixture of items for sale on the jumble table, it all just, worked, when used together! Got those little Mission floor standers rocking with a very respectable bottom end. Lots of smiley faces said it all about this set up.
I did the three track session on my system with a Croft Micro 25 Pre/Phono, but it is a zero gain model and it needed more. I swapped this out for the KIN which has higher gain and things improved a lot, Steves Camel track (vinyl) was on this set up and the following few tracks on the Stello CD transport, which I inserted into a couple of slots, while folks were swapping out gear on the main sytem being reviewed. I have the KIN on loan to assess it further in my system, so if anyone in the NE wants to audition it, drop me a PM and you can either hear it at mine, or I will bring it to your place and drop it into your system.
I will be voicing the Yammies using the KIN and hopefully have the speakers sorted, to my taste, for the next get together.
On the day, I did like those NVA monoblocks Rich and that Pioneer turntable Steve. Gordons system I know quite well, it allways hits the spot for me. Liked Ali's and Marcos passive Pre Amps, I thought the best sound from those stand mounters of Colins came using Ali's Transformer based Passive Pre, I liked that sound a lot, or was it the Eddingdales that were hooked up? Either way very nice.
There was really so much good stuff going on that it can't all get a mention.

It was good chatting to you too, Paul. I should point out that I wasn't a club DJ - don't have the skills for that - hosted a weekly reggae radio show on KUOR 89.1FM, in Redlands California. At that time it was a community radio station with an ecletic mix of music programmes all hosted by people who were passionate about the music they played. Technics turntables (of course) with flat wooden Grado tonearms and Stanton cartridges that could take the abuse from cueing. The late David Manley generously donated some gear to the studio which was funded by twice yearly fundraising events. A wonderful place - monthly meetings were held in a local bar - a good time had by all ......a bit like NEBO actually!
If you like American radio you might like to try KCRW out of Santa Monica - IMHO the best radio station in the US - has a companion online station called KCRW Eclectic 24.

Indeed! The *fun/boogie factor*, joie de vivre, that system produced is what Ken needs to inject into his own (main) system, and you need to get from your JBLs, presuming that the 'suck out' effect we heard wasn't mainly down to the room :)

+1 I even checked out my phono stage today after what I heard... I'm happy to report that it is ruler flat in frequency response from the 10Hz to 22KHz my Bruel & Kjear liner sweep oscillator can cover.. (via a high accuracy reverse RIAA network and buffer amps). Probably from less than a Hz to >100KHz but it seemed pointless to look any further outside the audio band! It's now connected to my hot-rodded Leak Stereo 20 which is back in action after GZ34 rectifiers donated by me marra after NEBO and it's all sounding simply sublime :eyebrows:

Well, what can i say? NEBO 6 was certainly one of the most interesting of all the events thus far. I am always humbled that informed and innovative enthusiasts, designers, engineers travel many many miles to attend a none commercial, small scale event such as NEBO. I am merely the organiser and pilot of NEBO it's the people who attend that make it what it has become and for that i doth my cap. Colin Topps got the ball rolling nicely i thought demonstrating his stand mounted Nordge speakers. I really enjoyed the Nils Lofgren track he played first. I have to admit to being a little impatient at this point as i was really wanting to revisit his Edingdale speakers i first heard at Owston Hall last year. Alas, i had to wait until a little later in the afternoon but when i did get to hear them i liked what i heard. As well as the systems mentioned in the Macca and Marco's reveiews i was impressed with the NVA A40 power amps. Highly musical devises to say the least.
The Pioneer PL71 really is a no nonsense design and i bask in it's simplicity. As pointed out i have a stock Denon DL103 in the sharp end as i now believe that all the bullshit written about the metal/onyx/ceramic cases for them is just that.
I was a little disappointed that we had to shelve the Phono stage bake off due to mine developing a fault in the right hand channel. However, watch this space!
I really enjoyed the final lash up with Mik Rik's lovely Radford power amp driving the Edingdales. I thought my specialist music sounded bloody great through it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day though as the evening drew to a close the Guiness and Caffrey's started to take it's toll on my middle aged liver made worse by the corned beef pie on the bar. This i fear may be the cause of a Sunday plagued by oesophagitis. A massive thanks to everyone who came. Fabulous to mix it up with the Scottish mafia, great blokes every one of them.

Glad everything went well for the event, it is a pity the mains power was not up to the task. in the case of the LDR although its
external supply is 12V AC dropping to what would be just 9VAC ( given mains was 180v vs 240 ) would result in its internal
regulator dropping out and current regulator stages similarly having very difficult and different values, and less than ideal performance.
I wish New Zealand had a similar event... one day. Glad everyone had lots of fun.
Cheers / Chris

Not 180, Jez and I measured it at 228. It recovered a little later on after peak demand time had passed to 233, which was enough for the regulated supplies in Nick's amp.

Marco.
My take would be that it was mainly due to the room, Marco. I've heard Ken's Yamaha's at his place and they can boogie - and going active should make them boogie even more. I think the same applies to Richie's JBLs which were set up next to Ken's. Both these speakers were facing out into that massive room which is going to take some driving. I think the bass for most of the speakers in that room was a bit ill-defined, including my own. Except for those Missions of course... the bass just boogied along with no effort... to paraphrase Alex Ferguson ...Hifi, bloody hell! :D
Gordon
Hi Gordon,
I get that, and it almost certainly was an issue.
However, it didn't seem to stop folk (including me) revelling in the superb sound produced in that area of the room later, when the JBLs were swapped for Colin's Eddingdales, and the amps replaced with a combination of either my Croft preamp/Ali's Slagle and Gary's valve amp, or the Radford.
That done, there were no 'suck out' issues whatsoever, and Steve's Pioneer PL-71 was thus allowed to show its true potential. IMO, after your superb system, the sounds produced there were the next best we'd heard on the day - and that wouldn't have been possible if the issues in that part of the room were as bad as suggested :)

Yeah I'd be a bit surprised if the Eddies turned up at my place...For me..They don't sound half as good as they look....waited most of the day to hear them..and a big anti-climax....The smaller stand mount Norge..were very nice with the less involved tracks..but as the busy stuff started..they were very muddled..could have been the room considering these are a very small enclosure...and the crossovers ain't in yet...perhaps in a much smaller room these might sing...but that big room did nothing for them..they are a bonny looking speaker too..with their Sonus Faber-ish type looks..

I would have to agree with you to a degree Alan. Having set the Edingdales up at home and farted around with positioning and source components I can tell you that the room they were played in did them no favours whatsoever. As Richie mooted earlier the best area was the dance floor. Something I will really have to consider in future. Hey how.

Having attended similar do's for many years, most gear won't sound anything like how it will sound in your living room. A main reason for this is the volume levels are way higher than would ever be used at home.
We've also found that OB's do much better at these types of do's than box speakers, part of the reason the active system sounded as good as it did.
Point well taken, Marco.

No worries. However, I'm not sure what point you're making with that last bit...
The point I was making was that if the acoustics of the room were so bad in the areas where both Rich's and Ken's system were, how were the Eddingdales, which were used later in Rich's system (in that same area), not as affected by room issues as the JBLs and Yammies appeared to be?
Marco.

Yes, Ali's point was what I was trying to say. The Eddingdales and Linkwitz speakers will have a much narrower polar response and therefore their interaction with the room was way less.
After playing around with Digital Room Correction for a couple of months now it's really made me realise how much we listen to our rooms.

Quick word to add to the thanks for Steve organising the event.
Well worth the trip and great to put faces to the names...a good bunch of guys too.
Thoroughly enjoyed myself, got to hear some great (and very different) kit, which is what its all about.
Shame about the few technical problems on the day, these things cant be factored in and it wouldn't be a hifi get together without SOMETHING happening. :)
That said I was a wee bit gutted when the mains issues stopped my 300B working properly.
There's a bit of magic goes on when its hooked up to the Edingdales and I was looking forward to letting you guys hear it.
That said, before the mains started it farting at two cycles per second it didn't sound too bad, room issues aside.
Agree with Ali that at these shows you wont get the sound you get at home, so the trick always for me is to go with the flow and just enjoy it.
On a personal note, I was interested to hear the various passive pre's with the Edingdales and compare to my Densen. I've heard the Slagel in my own system so looked forward to hearing the other passives.
Have to agree with Marco, pretty incolclusive and I didn't come away with any urge to change, so will be good to hear Marco's Goldpoint (with the Z-Foils?) next time he's back up in the Old Country.
Shame too about Rich's problems with the NVA gear?
Is good kit and not a lot of people have heard it, so would have been good for it to have got an airing all going well.
The Nebo gremlins had other plans though, but hey what can you do?
Loved Gordon's active system, the open baffles always do well at these events.
Highlight for me was unexpected, the Mission 752 speaker lash up!
Back in the day I always wanted a set but being a skint student I couldn't afford them. Great to hear them again, that system boogied really well...ZZ Top sounded great!
So heres to Nebo 7, well done guys.
Because the Yamahas and the Jbl's have huge fhooking bass drivers...perhaps...and the Eddies do not...
Yup, hadn't considered that :)
Marco.
Ken made some very valid comments about the stands they were on which, whilst attractive may not be the best design. He also remarked he got more bass from them standing at the other end of the room where they were transferring it all down through the raised floor section (presumably hollow box beneath where we were sitting) which makes me think if they'd been on the dancefloor with a couple of bits of granite under them they'd have been fine.
The one thing I can say for certain having messed around with them at home (concrete floors, close to a rear wall, listening from around 8ft away with 6ft between them) is that whatever was happening on the day isnt down to the amps, cables or indeed the speakers themselves.

Those Freedoms are a semi-forgotten gem from Mission...still a very nice floor stander punching heavy weight..though long discontinued...one of the better budget speakers where Mission hit the nail right on the head...
Quick word to add to
the thanks for Steve organising the event.

Just like to add what a bake off,'twas my 3rd and they just get better. Nice to meet up with new and old friends alike. Gordon I thought your rig with the linkwitz speakers was something very special, masses of controlled low end.
Micks radford showing old doesn't always mean outdated just superb. Glad everybody got home ok aswell especially Jez
Well done bud you deserve a medal for biking in that sort of weather. Thanks to Steve (petchy) for been a host with the most and for allowing people like me the opportunity to not only listen to and admire great kit but to meet great people it really means a lot to me btw your a canny air guitarist to boot. I will keep my promise aswell Steve and bring the jvc next nebo(sorry)!!!!!!!
ROLL ON NEBO 7
I'll bring some power cables and mains conditioning to try with the various gear,if you like. As I said earlier, the next NEBO can't happen fast enough. Been reading comments and in my humble opinion is, I thought the Linkwitz with the 4 dacs sounded superb and didn't seem to suffer from any room interaction issuses. I thought the Yamaha NSM's with the Seasick Steve track was excellent but not quite as good with busier music, still nice though. Next up Rich B's JBL's, were a quite bass domineering sound, would be lovely if the balance could be sorted so the mids were more prominent. The Nordge speakers were lovely with the Derrin Norendorf, (I think), but were really messy with music that was busier. I would've loved to have heard the set ups with my Isotek Sigmas in situ as this has a habit of really letting you hear into a busy track. We'll find out next year, and thanks again for a lovely day.
I enjoyed our chat Vince. Look forward to seeing you next time.
I forgot to mention meeting Chris (Stratmangler) for the first time. Chris was already a member when I joined AOS years ago and he has helped me out a few times with some good advice so it was great to meet him in person.
I think we all learned things on the day, I know I did, not least, just how good the gear was that I was letting go!
The Yammies are a work in progress and I would be the first to admit they did some things well and others not so well. Getting folks opinions, good or bad, was all part of the fun of the day and I appreciated peoples comments and advice. Hearing other systems has helped me re-calibrate my ears for the continuing project.
I'll get them right for next time though, even if I've got to resort to sprinkling them in fairy dust and virgins water. :D

Hey Brian, great to meet you too and chew the cud a bit. Nice pics mate!
I can't take any credit for the NEBO, that all goes to Steve our erstwhile organiser.
You know back when Steve mooted the idea of the first NEBO and we chatted on the phone, he was worried nobody would be interested. Best I could say was you'll never know unless you have a go and so he did. 6 NEBOs later and here we are. Lots of new pals and connections made along the way, a great local network who help each other out and people coming from afar to attend.
All I can take credit for is nudging him to give it a go. The rest is down to him.:)

Thanks Richard :) Yup , great to meet you and have a chat . I really enjoyed chatting with you and quite a few of the others at NEBO . Lovely system you have there , particularly the JBLs which look absolutely beautiful .
I look forward to NEBO 7 , if it's as good as NEBO6 then we're in for a rare treat . Well worth the journey chaps .

Yup, I completely concur with all of that. Why else do you think Macca and I embark on a 400-mile round trip on the same day to get there, or Jimbo travels from Birmingham! It's always worth the effort and never disappoints :)
The great thing is the vibe: like someone (Macca, I think) said, it's almost like a good stag party with some hi-fi thrown in... And there is never a sense of it being a 'competition' - just a great chance for folk to hear kit they'd very likely never hear anywhere else, discover new music and meet others from AoS, all of which creates a bond between us and strengthens the AoS community.
Certainly far better than hiding behind a computer, posting bile on forums about people, like some sad failure. Folk like that of course, will never attend events such as NEBO, as that would mean having to show their faces, and with it, the removal of the creepy anonymity that they crave, which is vital in allowing them to behave as a troll ;)
Marco.

Yes, I also really enjoyed conversation with Chris - a fount of knowledge on musicians - guitarists and drummers alike - when he asked about the Hiromi track I played and I told him who the other members of the trio were he knew everything about them, who they had played with in the past, the exact instruments they played - impressive stuff!
By the way, if you liked Hiromi, the Trio Project Live in Marciac DVD is a cracker. There are a couple of good clips on her website here - my favourite is Move - these three musicians so obviously love playing together - http://www.hiromiuehara.com/en/video/ - she's curently on tour - one date only in the UK in London - grrr!

Thanks for putting that link up. I have downloaded Move from the Tube. Brilliant musicians but I admit to finding it a bit relentless and one dimensional. She seems to be the blues guitar goddess of keyboard players. Wonderful hands. She looks as if she had classical training. Yet another lost to the dark side.
I'll check out some of their other stuff. Never too old to discover something new.

I said the same to myself - I wish she would just play a few slower, less intense pieces - then came across the Duet album with Chick Corea - beautiful stuff - and yes, she is classically trained and playing quite a few gigs in France, I think.

If you like Hiromi's playing check out Stanley Clarke's 'Jazz in The Garden' and'The Stanley Clarke Band' CD's. Hiromi features on both these albums with blistering keyboard playing. These are terrific albums 'Jazz in The Garden' being my favorite!
Nah mate , he doesn't carry money . He thinks he's the queen
