Where's your haul Allen ? :)

Im trying not 2 buy anything and have even managed 2 walk past boxes with records in them without side affects

I am enjoying what I have and now only buy if its something special ;)

I still go just incase and for the long walk on a lovely British morning ( Cold Wind Cloudy etc :D )

Being satisfied with what you've got is a good place to be mate although it is difficult sometimes to walk past something we perceive to be a bargain . I used to love raking around the Barras in Glasgow years ago . Bought some amount of junk though . Just making the effort to get up and go will help keep you fit mate :)

SONY EARTH ORBITER 9 band radio for 3 quid.
bit of a punt this one.
no battery cover or front dustcover, but as the front is just a cosmetic screen it looks better naked.
typically,it was gunked up with emulsion paint and dusty as hell.
a bit of TLC with solvent and half a box of cotton buds and now looking spangly!!
I'm currently knocking up a ahem. bespoke battery cover from 4mm hardboard to keep the EIGHT d cells in place.
luckily all functions work fine and all lights lit.
even the rotary display dial is straight....these warp when under mains power as the dial lights stay lit....under battery power the display is lit by a push switch.
listening last night with a 'long wire' to Chinese state radio was a treat.

p.s...the wife thinks I've gone "ALL RADIO HAMMY"

What does Chinese State Radio play?

Is it mainly Bryan Adams? I'm guessing it is.

The boot sale I attend has lots of traders in the first 15 or so isles all selling new household consumables its a bit like a market , so I always head for the far end of the field ( last public sellers area ) and work my way from the back of the field towards the start , that way you are in the homeowners area , I have more success this way ;)

This morning there were literally hundreds of good quality classical records about. I'm now quite selective and tend to go for the earlier recordings so came home with a few really nice recordings

Homeowners in these parts tend to sell utter sh*te and the mantra is: Sells for £10 on ebay butt.. answer is "so sell it on ebay then" and they reply.. "I did.. no one bought it...." :punch:

Most of my good hits come from the local house clearance boys, they simply have too much gear passing thru to check it out properly.

Hello all you good ppl, all these threads on boot finds inspired me to get out and look..

http://imageshack.com/a/img909/2219/JcMVfw.jpg

Kenwood dual tape deck, Possibly not something that will get loads of use, but my wife is a massive Manics st preachers fan and has loads of stuff on cassette, so happy wife happy life, outer case was a bit grubby, cleaned up alright, Gave the rollers and heads a good clean, seems to play with no problems :)

Also grabbed this as my record deck has 78 on it.

https://imageshack.com/i/ipy9Na79j

Not tried it yet, my deck came from my parents and hasn't been used in years, 78 needle seams pretty be really noisey so i'm going to get another from ebay before i play some of the 78s that came with it.

Huge Vide Grenier this morning. Lovely setting by a lake with all the tables amongst the trees. Terrific warm croissants and strong coffee to ease the trek around what seemed like hundreds of tables.

Being France there was no hi-fi in sight but lots and lots of crap:)

However, amongst the Johnny Halidays and Richard Claydermans (however they are spelt) there were just these five immaculate LPs. They are dead flat and looked unplayed. Three of them are B&O club records. Christopher Hogwood might just make me listen to Mozart!! Two of the B&O are on Decca and the Hogwood on L'Oiseau-Lyre.

I also managed to find a load of rubbish Chinese slot cars!! Great for spare parts though. We have a temporary small scale track to see us through until I can get the big track built in the barn.

PS: Listening to Karajan at the mo. Surprised at him!! He's playing Vivaldi like classical music and it is no such thing. We've just done the bouncing pony bit and it plods!! Ronnie just said how flat it is. With Hogwood, you can see the fat little ponies with their fat little riders bouncing happily as they bounce along. Where's the bounce Karajan? He's just going through the motions not trying to find the music. Shame.

PPS The LPs were one whole Euro each:)

I would agree Barry, it covers just about everything you need to know. Ownership should be mandatory for all valve amp owners and, in light of some products I've seen over the years, mandatory for manufacturers as well :eyebrows:

Funny, I just looked that up, correct. My Dad had the less sought after Morris Oxford, single carb. His previous car was a Wolseley 6/80 that he bought new at a cost of £1000, was a lota money then.

Blimey! Some excellent CDs there.

'In the Nude' by Eat Static is great, some Shpongle too and that 'Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' by Spirit is an absolute classic. 'Thick as a Brick' by Jethro Tull I see, nice. Some great Hawkind there. 'In Search of Space' has the incredible Master of the Universe on it, bung that on loud after a beer session and turn the lights down, it'll blow your socks off!!

Lucky guy. You got a real bargain.

The Zappa/Beefhearts are more in the way of refreshing the memory as neither are really artists that I'm comfortable with. Joe's Garage is the only vinyl album I have ever kept. and I simply don't get Trout Mask at all, though the later stuff is more accessable I know...

I'm like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment, dipping in and out. and there's a shed load of these to put on the Ipod, though that is getting towards full already.. of the 5 Hawkwinds tho I only don't have 2, the Search of Space has the Bonus material where as the one on my shelf doesn't... duplicates get put into my own carboot/horse trading box.It was a bit of a feeding frenzy, a friend got every Soft Machine album bar one, there was every Gong, I don't think I have ever seen so many Ozricks and they were still there when I left.. so maybe tomorrow..As I said it was a house clearance guy that had them, the original owner (probably deceased) had great taste...

Went late today 08.15 and still could this :eyebrows: again at the bottom of a pile of hifi , all the crap piles on top , asked how much for the bottom one ? Answer £10
Oo thats a bit steep , How about £5 as I can't see if it works , Counter offer £7 , I counter offer £6 and walk away with it :D

Just home and you can still see the dew on it and some grass and mud

Plugged it in and it powers up :) , It is filthy as you can see so a good clean up is in order

Its a Pioneer SX-450

Nice one, Al. Looks like a veritable bargain, if it works when you connect an aerial and hook it up to your system! :)

Nice one Al, have an SX 650 sitting on the shelf. Bit cleaner than that one though!

I bought an SX-450 nearly 40 years ago, having saved up over a summer hoeing cabbages on a market garden. In a bout of nostalgia a couple of years ago, I bought a nice restored example. It looks lovely, but as DSJR pointed out at the time, its sound is not exactly great. That boot sale example was a bargain at the price, though.

Marco

Sure, but you can bet your boots that as a standalone tuner, it would sound superb!

Therefore, those of an electronically minded bent could simply hoof out/disable all the superfluous amplifier gubbins, turn it into a tuner-only, and connect it up to a quality separate hi-fi amplifier... Bet it would then piss all over pretty much anything modern (especially DAB) ;)

It's the 'superfluous gubbins' inside that complicates the signal path and makes it sound crap.....

But then why would you mutilate a lovely old vintage receiver? I guess that you just enjoy it for what it is :)

Marco.

(Mine is better than this one, having Belling & Lee RF sockets, and a dB as well as a uV scale on the meter.)
