My local boot sale runs all year and I set the alarm for 7am the weekend before last as Mrs. B was away. I woke up and peered out of the window to see a very pleasant morning.

And then I thought "stuff that" and went back to bed....

Came away from the boot this morning with a huge grin on my face.

Akai AP-206C '70's TT for £25.00. It has the lid which is a bit scratched up. a quick look on the engine says it could be a goodie tho not with the awful and very flat sounding RS-100 cart it comes with.. ::eyebrows:

It's been a fun day, as well as todays haul I've also been playing with a Sony badged pair of B&W DM1's which cost me £15, the very first boot of this year.. I've had them hooked up for a month but only today got them hooked up with a new pair of interconnects so that I can simply switch between them and my Spendor S6e's.I'll be keeping them They're sitting on top of my S6e's and staying there.. midrange and top of the DM1's is very nice indeed, (so they should, its the same pairing as was in the BC1) they seem a little breathy, and whilst they do bass they don't do it as well as the S6e's, which is a good thing in that I can relax a little bit in the evenings knowing I shouldn't be up setting the neighbours.. :D

Delighted to say that all of todays haul is working fine... :yay:

I'm keeping the Sony Tuner, as I don't currently have one, also love the retro look of it and the green indicator lights/glow... it also sounds fine and will be perfect for the limited use I'll be giving it..

The Sony cassette deck is a very nice piece of kit, works with no issues, could probably use a head clean, but still sounds good.. I'll pass that on as I don't do cassettes..

The Philips CDP is a pleasure to listen to.. with to my ears a warm but not over bright and very detailed presentation to it, again I'll be passing this on (probably to a friend in town)..

The big question mark is the 401, the "plinth" is a total mess, & the arm geometry is a disaster (though the arm itself is fine...) Its working well and the speeds are stable, but it obviously needs an overhaul (it's a late production item serial number in the 71'000s) but for me to even make judgement on it, I need to source a workable plinth.

I really want to do it, but I know that I haven't the time or dedication so I guess that answers that question..

Makes it worth getting up at 0345 though, the haul came from a house clearance guy.. and I was putting it into my car by 0530..... :eyebrows:

I had one of those until a few years ago. It contained the most sure-footed transport I've ever owned. It would play anything, which made it great as the source for taking (digital) copies.

Jeez, you did well there, dude! Respect... The Sony tuner is a cracker, btw. I use the same one, and is sounds stunning (on the end of a proper outdoor aerial), blowing any DAB piece of pish into the weeds on sound quality. Enjoy!

Speech is fab (and accurate) in the 'BBC tradition'. Essentially, broadcast quality permitting, the Sony is 'voiced' to make the human voice and instruments sound rich, full and 'real', as opposed to the bleached-out, tinny sounding entities, as reproduced by many of today's DAB tuners - yet another area in audio where unfortunately no genuine progress has been made!

If you want to hear what the Sony is really capable of, say with high-quality live music broadcasts, then you'll need to feed it with a proper multi-element outdoor aerial, strapped to your chimney, fitted by a professional aerial installation company. I use a Ron Smith Galaxie.

Right now, muchacho, you're probably only hearing 50% of your tuner's true sonic potential.

Can't argue with any of that ^^^ but we may be moving next year so the outside aerial is a no no..

Records , I have a cull of the damaged ones they go straight in the bin , anything decent gets cleaned and files in my record storage rack for listening

I fire up the hifi every day and do some box swapping / speaker swapping etc , it keeps me amused :)

:stalks:

What consitutes damaged in your book? I hope you're not fussy? Sometimes a really bad skip can be cured by locating the point and digging out a tough bit of dirt by hand.

Some rare records are still worth loads when badlyscratched, mouldy ones still play well after a good clean. Better actually to clean records regardless before deciding if they're beyond repair or not - be surprised what a good clean can do.

Dont throw away music - pass it on for free if you must get rid of it quick. Then again, when I've looked at some of these boot sale threads before, some of the records you keep I'd be tempted to bin myself

First car boot of the year for me today, not a bad pick:

14444

My third pair of car boot 15XR's (these just need 1 new binding post :)), a pitiful 3 records, 10 CD's and the 405 box in the background contains a 405 I picked up yesterday which only outputs on one channel, all in less than £100 for everything, a good start to the season, long may it continue.

I was doing it every week, Mon - Thurs for a while. These days it's every other week. I've actually got a lie in tomorrow as I'm just in Newcastle then doing a round trip London, Bristol, Leeds before getting home sometime before the end of the week.

I won't travel anywhere on a Friday and work from home so I religiously switch off early as I've usually done more than my fair share by then.

Just hope all that commuting doesn't end up burning you out, mate.... S'ok when you're still relatively young, but I'd be looking to reign-in the 'air miles' in a few years time :)

For me, having some free time is always worth more than any amount of money. Think 'work/life balance'.

I think I'm rewarded commensurate with my efforts. The travel can be wearying at times but I take my time back in other ways... long train journeys give me an opportunity to catch up on emails, do the crossword, listen to new albums downloaded from Spotify and of course post rubbish on this forum ;-)

They look very similar to a pair of LS6a/2's I had which were listed here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?33068-FS-Rogers-LS6a-2-speakers-amp-matching-open-frame-stands) a while back but just in a fancy finish...

.....Not to mention Joni Mitchell and Kenny Rogers.....nice haul (especially like the cats)

I've been hoping to drop on some Joni Mitchell albums for a while, apart from Yellow Taxi and Canada (which I don't really like) I'm not familiar with her work. I have a copy of Blue which I can't get on with but I hope there's something here I do? As for Kenny Rogers, these are the first KR albums I've ever bought but I've heard him enough on the radio to know most of the lyrics from his big hits, possibly the perfect accompaniment to cold beers and lazy sunny afternoons? All I need now is the time for some lazy sunny afternoons.

The cat's must love the car boot hauls too as they spend the rest of the day sniffing everything that comes home. The black guy on the left is Walι the black and white gal is Dre. Wale's a recent arrival and the first Tom I've ever had, I've previously had 2 other Moly's (Tyler and Buster :deceased:) but wanted a Tom as a minder for Dre. Dre's 11(ish), quite small and doesn't like other cats, about 18 months ago a new cat rocked up across the road and was giving Dre some grief and taking ownership of our garden (our garden borders are well worked and mulched with bark so make lovely cat toilets). Dre and Wale (after a bit of initial animosity from Dre who dislikes other cats even more if they dare to enter her home) worked well as a team in the early days to see off any trespassers, now Wale's confident and big enough to own the garden which makes Dre far more comfortable. I wasn't sure how they'd get along but they're getting on well, Wale's very sociable (he likes other cat's, is best mates with next doors dog, has the old ladies round here swooning and loves playing with kids) and is wearing down Dre's gruff (fearful) demeanor, it's great to get home and see them both sunbathing side by side on the drive. Dre would never admit it but she's far happier with Wale around, check out her body language, chilling out, belly exposed, a good sign of trust :).

I wholeheartedly agree Andy. New York City passed me by when it was released and I've been meaning to pick up a copy for a while, it would seem that I have all the tracks from it on disc B, are there just 7 tracks on the album (one of which being the radio edit of New York City) / does it exist on vinyl? Sorry, it won't be going anywhere.

LA Woman seems to be cropping up in a few snaps recently. What a great haul. And cats.

Unfortunately LA Woman's not a keeper, it's roached, one of the downsides to buying vinyl before the sun's fully up, however I'd take a 50p punt on it every Sunday morning if I could.

Hi Darren,

Yes, there was only 7 songs on it and they are all good,it shows what Norah can do if she would just open up a bit,
another person i'd like to see ''upping it'' is Katie Melua, her stuff is just .....Zzzz, don't blame you for hanging on to it, :) no vinyl i know of,
the thing with Hong Kong and Jap pressings are they tend to bundle in tracks/hits from previous albums and not fillers either, enjoy.

Don't laugh but i like the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack too. :D

DarrenHW
20-04-2015, 10:10
I know what you're saying about Melua, I had hopes for her escaping the shackles of Mike (middle of the road) Batt and becoming the next Kate Bush but I've long given up on that pipe dream. I'm really happy with the HDCDs, I have Come Away With Me on SACD and I think the tracks on HDCD may sound better, my amp's undergoing some mods at the moment so can't really say but looking forward to a bake off once they're back in the rack.

I like the soundtrack too (that's why I bought it), it's a great sounding film but I don't like the film, I thought the sequal Staying Alive was far better but then I also like Neil Diamond's Jazz Singer (there's one of his LP's in that pile too :o) so that says a lot about my taste in music and film :).

wiicrackpot
20-04-2015, 10:22
Aye, the HDCD can sound rather good, if in your travels and you come across discs mastered with JVC K2-XRCD,
grab it !!, they are general top notch and equal of good SACD if not better.

Hee...hee...i see bits poking outta there, is that Pink Floyd 'final cut' i see the corner poking out, i see Joni's 'hissing of the summer lawns too,
and there's dire straits, nik kershaw....etc, don't want to go on but i recognise just about 90% of your haul. :)

It's the La Radiotechnique ones that interested me as these are the first GZ34's I've found / seen with 7 notches in the plates. Usually they have 4 or none at all.

It's also nice to find all 3 have the same codes f32 B2A2 which I think means made in the Mullard Factory in Blackburn during the 2nd week of January 1962.

I think the E88CC's are keepers for the time being.;)

Codes are the same on both 7L1 D91 which I think is made in the Hamburg Factory in January 1959 although I might be wrong as I'm not good with the earlier codes. Both are Red label D getters with gold pins.

The speakers seem to be the bargain here, there are some up on eBay for £165 at the mo!! The CD player has the magic Phillips chip apparently. Its all playing and the only casualty of time is the cassette deck which probably just needs a new belt, I'll have a look later.

It sounds not bad at all. The speakers need to be up on stands as they are a little muddy at the mo but surprisingly smooth and non sharp for Japanese speakers.

Rather chuffed.

Not a boot fair but the misses went to visit a friend who lives in a small Kent village and came back with three big boxes of records from a garage sale. There's about 130 clasical records, mainly early stereo SXL, ASD, SAX, SABL, SAL etc but a few mono's as well. She asked me if they were any good and was £10 she paid was too much. :D

I find buying vinyl out here very frustrating. There are plenty of stalls but they all have the same stuff and it is usually in poor condition. Mind you, if you could see what passes for the typical record player out here, it's a miracle that there is any vinyl left at all. The ADC cart I got that tracked at 5 grammes seems to be the lower end of the weight scale.

Some of the early French microgroove recordings of Violin, Cello and some piano and chamber music are amongst the most sought after classical recordings. The performances are often quite magical. Look out for works on the Discophiles Francais, Lumen, Ducratet Thompson, Valois, Pathe Marconi and Erato labels.

Absolutely but it makes me cry when I take the record out of its cover and see that state of the damn things. This year I have found just two recordings that I am prepared to put on a turntable.

Erato are reasonably numerous but I'll keep my eyes open for the others, thanks.

I did a car boot sale for the first time in ages yesterday. The sum total of audio excitement was a pair of JBL E30 loudspeakers (tatty) and an Akai AM-35 amplifier (filthy and bass knob missing). I passed on both and merely came home with LPs by Alan Parsons, Chris Rea and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

However, on Saturday in Winchester it was a different story. Wandering past the 'indoor market' shop, my eye alighted on two large and ugly teak boxes just inside the door. Further investigation, a bit of haggling and £55 later, a pair of Goodmans Magisters were in my boot. :eyebrows:

They're generally in quite good condition although have the usual issue of the woofer coating parting company with the driver - one dust cap has actually 'slid' halfway down the cone! Just hope the tweeters work; unlike on the last pair I owned...

I've largely given up with looking at vinyl at boot fairs - most of it is in very poor condition. Now I only consider vinyl from audiophile friends (for want of a better term), at least it has usually been looked after.

I've not been to a car boot in a long long time.

Last time though, maybe 2 years ago, I did at least come home with some JBL Caberet for £20 speakers kind of like this, but in their viny wrap form and needing a refoam:

http://img.audiofanzine.com/image.php?lang=en&identifier=id&size=thumb2&module=product&product_id=179617

and a JVC direct to disc recording of flamenco dancing! Like this one (think an extortionate £3):

Kind of wish I'd picked up the 16" MOD overseas news broadcast records too but what would I do with them?

First one I've been to in years, one stall had some interesting vinyl (Hawkwind, Tull, Grounhogs etc.) but she wanted ebay type prices for them. Everybody else had the usual Johnny Mathis/Perry Como/Cliff Richard type selection.

Amazing so many stalls just seemed to be a couple of paste tables with a few black bags full of old clothes emptied on them, how they hoped to sell anything I don't know, I mean at least make the effort to lay out what you're selling neatly!

Nice breakfast in Brentwood Wetherspoons after though.

I went to the huge boot sale at Denham, West London.

I've never seen such a load if useless tat in my life, It seems to get worse each time I go. Nothing that could seriously be called even budget Hi-Fi. Vast numbers of very ugly, stupid people though. One or two of them even spoke English.

Picked up a couple of decent milling tools and some pulley wheels for £4, so almost worth going.

They wanted £1 a piece, but got the lot for £40, which is 25p each!

Well, two little ones anyway. On the way back from collecting my croissants this morning I called in to our local vide grenier just as the whole six stalls were being set up. One was selling a few Lps so I got two for €5. Both Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan and the Berlin Phil. Beethoven 5th and Mozart Requiem. Neither look as if they have ever been out of the sleeves. Not a mark on them. Busy day today so I will see what they are like this evening.

€5 for two is really cheap out here. Most of them ask between €10 and €15 for ONE LP!! French second hand prices tend to be stratospheric. They seem to think that old stuff still has value:mental:

Found these at the boot sale  The TT is faulty and needs some TLC but the speakers work OK

Oh, very nice indeed - I am suitably envious!

Thank you Adam, I hope I get it working. If not it still looks pretty cool :)

Not strictly car boot territory but for any members near to Petersfield, Hants, there is a better than normal selection of vinyl in the High Street Sue Ryder charity shop. Plenty of Jackson Browne among other offerings.

Heathkit tuner amplifier, some large and heavy heathkit speakers. Fair to good condition.

Get them home, whip the grilles off and they seem to be something like Kefkit 3's but with a mesh covered tweeter that I dont think Kefs had. Fired up they're pretty good and work perfectly but not in Urei/Tannoy league so are currently attic dwelling until I think what to do with them...Haven't tried the receiver yet. Ages since I scored any nice kit at the car boot, but I really must post some pics of the mystery stereo valve pre and power which was last years best find. With the huge body of expertise here on AOS someone will surely know what it is....

Speakers seem to be AS-9530 or thereabouts.

Found a few nice vinyls today

I've never seen the Decca pressed Wand label before but I found these three, all first pressings from 1971/2 in absolute mint condition

Bit of a washout this morning. I was going to be selling but the rain in the North has quashed that idea
