I have my own theory on this but I'm not sure that it would withstand close technical scrutiny, and that is that the more mid or even lo-fi the set up is the more room there is for Mike's cable to improve things.

Hi Dave,

Quite simply, the best cable is the one that you cannot 'hear', or perhaps hear the least. This is how I evaluate cables in my system. I'm not sure how terribly helpful that is in the context of the discussion, though, but there you are :)

As an aside, I'm glad that you guys are delighted with Mikey's cables - he's a most helpful and skilled chappie. This thread epitomises the camaraderie and willingness to help each other, through sharing mutual experiences and expertise, which sums up what AOS is about

Marco.

Nah then Wazuk, (don't know what it means, my wife calls me by it occassionally :) ),
My bloody system's not particularly 'High End' either, in fact it's several rungs down the ladder from yours, so that fact alone shouldn't prevent you from noticing the improvement - 'perceived' is not a word that has any place in describing the improvement bestowed by the use of Mike's cable, IMHO.
I have my own theory on this but I'm not sure that it would withstand close technical scrutiny, and that is that the more mid or even lo-fi the set up is the more room there is for Mike's cable to improve things.
Enjoy the experience anyway and book your appointment with your local Audiologist if you're not bowled over by Mike'scable.

There again, maybe you weren't joking when you said you'd make mine extra special

There's a small refinement to the way the screen side of the cable is connected to the plugs which all but a couple of the very first have. I'm not sure if it's brought about any sonic benefits though.

It's better than I remember, which MAY be due to the fact that I asked Mike to make the new ones 1.54m in length (after your earlier comments) rather than the previous 1m one.
Cheers,

Possibly!

I'd like to read more about this if anyone can point me in the right direction? :)

Sorry, very sorry, please forgive! :eyebrows: . To quote someone else on a different thread, I was using the Elizabethan spelling :ner: :ner: .
Seriously though, until Ali enlightened me (both of us ??), I thought it was a word that she or one of her ex-work colleagues had 'made up'. Thinking aloud, there were a couple of Scottish lassies working with her, that's probably where she picked it up from.

Actually, it's Wassock.

The origin in English is from 'Wiseacre' - a smart arse.
It's roots lie in the old Dutch for a soothsayer or prophet - 'Wijssegger'

Mike, I read a bit on another thread but don't know how to link you to it. Type THORSTEN in 'search' or THORSTEN LOESCH in Google.

The only time that I've ever heard of cable being better for being a longer length is in the case of braided power chords for RF rejection.

Back to Digital Cables for a moment. ;)

I can also supply these with BNC connectors for £15 should anyone have equipment that uses them.

These would be a much better connector for this application. Why so few transports and DAC's are available thus equipped is beyond me, TBH! :trust:

Also... I've already missed posting one cable, sorry Jim, so is there anyone else still waiting for cables to arrive? Especially those of you who've already paid!!!

I just got home and I found a (trying to) delivery notice of TNT on my door mat. Something from England can be picked up tomorrow at the post office so it might be your cable.

Don't make any critical decisions based on my cloth ears  .
Seriously, my perception was that it was better, and it certainly wasn't any worse, so, if the price is the same, why not go for it - nothing to lose and you might gain - problem is, you'll never be aware of it.

Demo cables received from Jerry (Jandl100) today.

DaveK

Oh, but we do trust you, you're our real-world reference, our reality check!

You said that maybe a 'lesser' system has the potential to show greater improvements from upgrades. Sometimes you need a revealing system to show the potential benefits of an upgrade. But as always it's a balance that's the optimum result; an extreme in any area or direction is never the best result. Put a cheap, dedicated mains cable on a boombox and you'll get 100% improvement, put the same cable on a revealing system and it will more than likely have more negative effect than positive. But add power cables with the potential to match the system components and the improvement could be of a magnitude far greater than the boombox, even at 10% improvement.

Valerie says "that sounds awesome - now leave the bloody thing alone!". But I can't. Not because I'm unimpressed with the sound or dissatisfied.
Mike's cable will be the same; an improvement in it's own right, but then I'll have to try changing other variables that were optimised before because that improvement will allow a different balancing act and ultimately that cable change will allow other changes that achieve a new balance to the system which can be even greater than that attributed to the cable itself.
An improvement from the upgrade component and a further system upgrade by optimising the potential.

Excited or what!!! :champagne:

Put it in between the Monarchy and the 7520, replacing a Mark Grant one.

First impressions are that the sound is certainly different. Only been plugged in a hour or two but I will say it's a more natural sound and realistic. But digital is digital isn't it?

Sorry to sicken folks, but I got mine fairly quick I think.I'd asked Mike for two,one with the "normal" plugs, and one with the "economy" version.Being a nice chap,he said "No problem" and I received them a couple of days ago.I've just plugged the cheapo :) plugged version in about an hour ago,and having listened for about an hour so far,all I can say is "Damn!" This really has improved matters considerably.I'll post a more considered opinion later, but my initial thoughs are-how much of the improvement is down to the lockable plugs? I do have a couple of cheapie ebay leads that use Belden cable, but not the WBT plugs,so perhaps it's these that make the difference?

Cable received OK, the black sheath with the WBT plugs is the way forward, looks a real class act. The way the white inner cable shows through the material gives a high-tech graphite look, makes the posh white cloth sleeve look like a 50's electric fire cable.

I've had three cables together for comparison: the 1.0m WBT plugs (Mk1), the 1.0m ProFi plugs (Mk2) and my 1.5m with WBT plugs (Mk3). The demo pair will be off to you tomorrow. Connection is between a Consonance CD120 Linear and MF Trivista 21.

Comparing the two plugs we immediately and repeatedly heard quite a difference. Maybe that's due to the excellent contact that the WBT plugs provide but the Mk2 seemed quite constrained, lacking air, definition and seperation. Not a fan.
In contrast the Mk1 was a complete revelation. From the first few bars we just looked to each other in amazement, the sound was so different. The next words were 20 minutes later - "What next? Play this. Try that." Val said "That's not going anywhere". One of those messy upgrades where discs get roughly discarded in the haste to get the next one on.
To describe the sound I would agree with previous comments. The soundstage grew in size and spaciousness, bass gained definition (I love grumbly bass). I had an issue that the tweeters were a bit hot and harsh when driven into the Nohr's powerband; now the top end became pure and sparkling clean.

But these were only desciptions of the physical sound; the real real change was fundamental. I thought at first that everything had slowed down, even though the dynamics were striking, then began to realise that every musician seemed to have all the time in the world to put expression into every note. To hear the decay, or it's absence, in an effortless, open acoustic brought more musicianship and more of an instrument's character. More music and far greater access to it.
The 1.5 metre version, whether due to reduced jitter reflections or Mike's improved production methods to reduce contamination from Snake Oil, gave an information stream rich in tonal cues, enhancing the instrument character further and consequently sounding even more natural.

Just what the doctor ordered Mike, for my system you've given me something quite special. It's ironic that you don't need a digital connection to have and hear the benefit for yourself!

I would just like to thank Mike for replacing my 1 metre cable with a 1.5m one. After listening to this cable for a week I think its an improvement-more of an 'airy' feel around instruments.
I wouldn't argue the with the comments that 1.5m is the best length to reduce jitter.

It's just a theory that works well depending on the dac. Pat said once that :

The receivers are not perfect; all contribute a significant amount of reflections.

Cables are not exactly 75 ohms. Really, really good ones are spec'ed at +/- 0.75 ohms. Average ones are spec'ed at +/- 3.0 ohms.

So, the length is important.
Unless you think that a.) jitter is nonsense, and/or b.) you don't care.

Some DACs handle jitter better than others. So, what may make a world of difference on one may be barely discernible on others.
In other words, it depends. But in any case, although you can get it right for less than 16feet, 0.5m is not a good length. But 1m5 is ok. ;)

Which Soniqs cable are you using?... I use the ICT myself for analogue but I've never used it for digital.

I can do you digital I/C on a 'sale or return' basis if you like? Then you can tell us how it compares! :)

Due to increasing hassle over getting hold of reasonably priced WBT phono sockets (I have to buy several sets to make it worthwhile), I'm making a change to how I do things.

Price will be £20 inc. P&P

Hi,
would better specs 75 ohms coaxial cable, for instance, which is rated to 3Gbps be better than the cable you are using ?

It's possible, yes.

However, if you look at the 'spec' of the cable I use you'll notice that the data rates it is normally used for are way beyond the speeds of a SPDIF signal. I've made cables with 3GHz & 4.5GHz bandwidths and been unable to detect any improvements myself. Others may find differently, so feel free to try it and let us know.

Ah those! Actually, WBT claim 75ohm impedance (at least in some adverts) but I have doubts. It's a phono plug after all!

With the WBT-0110 they've messed about with the capacitance so that the plug and socket 'behave' like a proper 75ohm connector. But only when you use them together!... I read something about it somewhere or other, I'll see if I can dig it out.

My own preference would be for the 0110cu plugs as the coax is all copper. I've made plenty with the silver version for others and everyone seems to like them, but it just makes more sense to me to save a few quid and use the copper plugs on a copper cable! :) Bear in mind the bit about the matching sockets though!

There's a theory bouncing around that I've seen where 1.2m or above is recommended, it's said to reduce reflections IIRC. I've tried different lengths but couldn't really hear any difference, in my system at least.
I prefer to use as little cable as possible, personally speaking, as it helps to keep things tidy! :)

Alternatively, as you know your cables better than anyone else, are there any other connectors in the same price range that you think might be better ( or cheaper and as good? ;) )
TIA,
Dave

Yeah... the plugs that are fitted to the cable Marco has! :)

You can give it a go if Marco ever gets his lazy arse in gear and sends it back!

They're the same as those fitted to the cables here: http://www.theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18260

Nae worries... Still waiting on those cables to arrive from Mark, btw, before any meaningful comparisons can be done. The delay is in getting the Eichmann plugs from his supplier.

Regardless of that, however, I'd still rate your digi-cable as one of the best I've heard :)

I've got some spare (used) Eichmann plugs if they're any use? Copper ones though...

Having said that... they're probably the last plugs I'd choose for a digital cable, I must admit!

Guys,
Can I jump in and suggest Marco sends the cable(s) direct to me?
Dave.

Nice one, Mikey. I'll bear it in mind, and see how Mark gets on. They could probably go somewhere :)

Okies, I'll just swing what I've got as your addy, Dave, by PM, to make sure it's the right one :)

C'mon Mike, be reasonable ;) Scottish and Italian mixture there so English might be expecting a bit much  ;)

Impressive... Most impressive...

/Darth Vader

Radically changes the stereo imaging, instrument / vocal placement and bass.

I wouldn't say the low level detail retrieval is that much more improved than my home brew Belden 89259 with crap phonos on, the cable does reveal a tad more but it's not a like OMZ type of event, but the vocals and rest of the mix are so much more expansive, this is where it shines.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the feedback! ;)
