It's that time of year again. Every night for about a week now we've had loud firework bangs through the evenings. This will carry on and get worse until the end of the first week of November, then it tails off. It's a real nuisance and for a few days at the beginning of next month it will be unbearable!!

It will be a right royal pain in the arse until the new year around here. I hate the bloody things with a passion.
Apart from the noise nuisance, I have seen first-hand the damage they can do to people when things go wrong, I just wish they'd ban them.
Unfortunately, one of our dogs gets really stressed by them, so we've got the DAP diffusers on in three rooms.

Given your location Geoff I assume the Diwali celebrations must be quite something and then followed by the traditional burning of an effigy of Synsei with the associated pyrotechnics lighting the night sky and producing crescendo's of cannon shots.

Time to put on the 1812 Overture :D

Absolutely out of control every year. I thought the sale of deafeningly loud fireworks was banned, but it seems that around here the main object is to make as many huge bangs as you can for as long as you can!!:steam:

Fireworks being used in the street and on every street. Totally illegal, I wish the coppers would go in with the dogs and sort it all out once and for all.

Its not been bad here ...YET; hardly any this year. I'd ban them apart from organised events. you cant have a gun, but hey you can have as much black powder as you can buy:doh:

Yup , I would ban the sale of fireworks to the public . Why on earth do we allow the sale of explosives every year . These things are dangerous and getting more powerful every year .

There's somebody who lives near me who I refer to as the 'Firework Nutter' who must spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds each year on the damn things. It usually starts in late October and goes on regularly until the end of November. Also at Christmas and the New Year festivities. Some of his sessions would rival a small professional display and at times there are loud bangs quite late in the evening. :steam:

Yup , I would ban the sale of fireworks to the public . Why on earth do we allow the sale of explosives every year . These things are dangerous and getting more powerful every year .

When we lived in Manchester a local car thief tried to terrorise us (long story), and at one point an "industrial" firework, probably an illegal Chinese one, was put into our camper van. Blew all the windows across the neighbour's garden, punched a big crater in the van floor, and completely wrote it off. Actually we made a profit on the insurance, quite legitimately before you ask, but the effect on my wife was devastating; partly why we now live in Devon. The police were useless, but totalling his house and car by several big blokes with iron bars put a stop to it eventually.
So I would definitely like a bit more policing of street fireworks

Sorry about that I don't know what happened there...should be back to original

Thank fook we don’t get that pish up here, otherwise they’d get a bloody rocket rammed up their Jap’s eye! :trust:

In all seriousness though, in general, you tend to find that folk are less considerate of others in and around big cities than out in the sticks, or in towns and villages. Never in a month of Sundays would you get folk around here being so rudely inconsiderate with fireworks. It’s just not in their nature.

You have my sympathy, Geoff. Ear plugs for Xmas - will that do ya? ;)

Don't tempt me. The same rabble responsible for the fireworks have also been riding stolen motorbikes with no silencers up and down the road for the past few weekends, I've reported this to the police but they don't seem to give a toss. Must buy a Weihrauch Hw100 sometime.

There have been continuous loud explosions since this afternoon. It's building up in intensity steadily. Some of the bangs are ridiculously loud.

It's just beginning to rain a bit. Hope it pours on the noisy gits.

Ah yes. A man on my wavelength! :)

By the way. it's been mayhem here for hours. Indoors with the telly turned up and the racket still intrudes badly. Bastards! :steam:

The dog likes it though, daft bugger. Keeps begging to go in the garden to look and listen to it all. Trots up and down and bounces about with his tail in the air when there's a big bang. He definitely enjoys it. (he's a rescued, re-homed pooch who's history I don't know. But I've a feeling he could be used to gunfire, maybe)

Have you tried Zylkene (http://www.zylkenepet.co.uk)? We have just started to dose up our 4-year-old Samoyed bitch and it does appear to help. It works on cats too by all accounts.
We also use a DAP diffuser. DAP stands for Dog Appeasing Pheremone and it's supposed to mimic the pheromones given off by lactating bitches which calms puppies.
There is, I believe ,an equivalent for cats. Also have a look at http://www.vetuk.co.uk or http://www.dorwest.co.uk

On Dorwest's home page, they have Firework Combi packs which may be worth a look.

Did you have any windows left at the end of the night Mark
Seriously though all they seem to want these days is money . If you give them fruit they either throw it away , throw it at peoples windows or at buses and cars up this way . I used to be a bus driver and at this time of year we were pelted with fruit , fireworks and snowballs . Not necessarily in that order  The little darlings put a bottle sideways , put the rocket inside , lit the fuse , and pointed it towards the bus. One of my colleagues had his eyes damaged by a laser pen and had to retire through ill health :(

Another lot that came around were given a treat - I told them to close their eyes and then popped raw chillis in their mouths and told them to chew
All good, harmless fun...Can you still get laxative chocolate?

I know here I'd put a bottle sideways...The laser pen is well beyond the pale. I hope the oiks were caught and punished (but I doubt it).

You can be fined up to £5,000 and/or imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally. You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am. The exceptions are:

Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight
New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am

. ...I wonder if it has been used?

I bought a fairly terrifying evil clown wrestlers mask in Mexico a couple of years ago. Last time I answered the door wearing it the kids ran like hell.

BTW the cat peheromone stuff is feliway...I've not used it and probably won't as I'll just make sure they have my nap and a favourite blanket to hide in. Also the TV at decent volume drowns most of it out on the night. The problem is the random unexpected booms when they are outside doing their thing which send them fleeing indoors to cower.

The fireworks are quiet at the moment, but the whole area is in 'lockdown', due to some religious shindig. Access through much of the town is totally blocked by traffic due to the bulk of the population driving around tooting their horns, all as part of the 'fun'. Main roads are unusable and there are road closures and diversions in place.

No doubt the fireworks will kick off again later. Looks like it could rain though, with luck!

It was a bit like the battle of the Somme at around here last night, with some flipping' big bangs at 10:30PM. No consideration at all for parents with wee (and not so wee) ones. Our youngest dog wasn't at all happy, though much better for being on Skullcap and Valerian plus Zylkene.
I don't have a problem with people wanting to celebrate Guy Fawkes' day, but I detest the constant random explosions between the middle of October until new year.
I would love to see the sale of fireworks banned to the general public and only allow properly organised professional displays.

Oddly enough yesterday evening was quieter than many of the days leading up to it. Apart from the window shaking reports from the hefty mortars employed in our local organised display, which began at 7:15pm and lasted for just 15 minutes, the rest of the evening was only punctuated by minor skirmishes and these were all done and dusted by about 9pm :)

The area is covered by CCTV, but as it happens at night and they turn up on foot carrying their crap, there's no way of seeing exactly who they are or which house they've come from (they all live in the adjacent road).

There are constant problems with these arseholes coming onto the private estate here and parking anywhere they like. All over the residential footway for instance. I've had no end of confrontations and the landowner is a waste of time. Sooner or later there'll be big trouble. Just give me one excuse!

The UK always seems to protect those that do the wrong thing and the innocent people get a rough deal, as is usual in our country at the moment.. it's all wrong and the vermin always get away with their antics... this country has lost it's way somewhere don't you think?? makes me mad...:mental:

I dare say the weekend will 'bring it all on' unfortunately. Hope it pisses down! :D

Oh garrulous you! Me, I'm struggling to reach 12,000 posts. When I do, I'll resign from AoS!

Apropos November 5th - well in past years it has started the Saturday before, and continued each night until the weekend after. This year most of the celebration was done on the Friday and Saturday (6th and 7th).

And despite all the Halloween junk for sale in the shops, this year there seemed to be very little activity: I didn't see any 'trick or treating' around here (thank goodness - awful American import!).

Quite a few here tonight. Less than last night though, but quite a few idiots driving around town blasting car horns for some reason. Next week will be worse. The Indians have their Doolally thing. It'll be noise every night until about a week after. No sense of proportion or consideration. There'll even be firework parties in the road and the racket will go on until about 2am. If anybody thinks I'm exaggerating, I'll be taking some video!

That's just like my dog Paul. He's a re-homed pooch who's past I don't know, but I reckon he was used to guns. When he hears fireworks, he prances at the back door wanting to be let out, then runs up and down the garden looking at the sky and enjoying the bangs.

Nah only kidding, Marco, I totally agree, having spent over 30 years ( on Operational side ) in the Fire Service and had to deal with Nov 5th and more so the run up to it, I can't believe they still sell explosives over the counter, get your weekly shop and add in a few bombs , great!

Marco
12-11-2015, 10:07
You'll have seen the carnage and horrendous injuries it can cause then, Mike, when fireworks are put into the wrong hands?

Sales of fireworks to the general public should've been banned YEARS ago. Back as early as the 60s and 70s, when my dad had his fish and chip restaurant in Glasgow, and also sold all manner of different things, including cigarettes and sweets, etc, he refused to sell fireworks, especially to the local community.

He was offered them numerous times by reps (from Astra, Standard, etc - remember them?) and would've made a significant profit from it, but declined on the grounds of not wanting someone potentially getting maimed for life on his conscience, having bought the fireworks responsible from his shop. Some things are rather more important than money....

Retail outlets these days selling them should take note!!

Geoff, all it would take is someone (such as you) to phone the Police whenever they heard/saw fireworks being used illegally (such as they would be if they were banned, as proposed). The Police then come out and fine/lock up those responsible, the same as they'd do with any other crime being committed.

And yes, I'd impose instant fines on those caught using fireworks illegally. They'd soon get the message then.

Simples! :)

Btw, I should state that I'm not against the SAFE and CONSIDERATE (that last word is very important) use of fireworks, at appropriate times, although I'd prefer to see more organised public professional displays taking place locally throughout the country, to replace the need for private ones, simply the INCONSIDERATE idiots, such as Geoff is having to deal with, who let these things off at 'silly o'clock' in the morning, for no good reason.

When you're living in a community *anywhere*, it's simply a matter of common courtesy to respect the right of other people living there to some peace and quiet (and sleep), and not just rather selfishly prioritising what it is YOU want to do!

The 'I'm all right, Jack, bugger you' attitude, prevalent these days, is one of the major reasons why our society is in the state that it's in!!

Btw, for 'alfer' (A.K.A Brian Hayter, of South Birmingham), 'elsewhere' (also known on pfm as 'whatsnext'), the Indians don't have to celebrate Diwali at 2am in the morning - they can do it up until a more sociable hour, and consider other people, not just themselves!

Although, I suspect it's not the Indians letting off fireworks at that time, but the brainless and idiotic chavs/oiks/losers with nothing else better to do, who should be spending their money instead on trying to find a job (and getting a life).

Marco.

I've often (mistakenly) done that (and also with the car) here, with no issues at all. In saying that, we've got CCTV installed around the full perimeter of our property, so no 'bad boys' would get away... :eyebrows:

Returning to fireworks, we've got families with young children living right across from us, all of which without exception celebrated Guy Fawkes night, on Guy Fawkes night (not days after the event), lit a few rockets, etc, and respectfully ensured that it was all over before 10pm: it's called being brought up to be civil, and having the courtesy not to just think about yourself.

Now if some Indian people lived across the road, and simply because it was Diwali, were letting fireworks off at 2am in the morning, then I can assure you it wouldn't just be me knocking on their door to complain, but the whole neighbourhood, and most likely the Police!! And they would soon stop, I can assure you ;)

Why can't such courtesy be shown towards others by people living in London? The problem is too many immigrants aren't integrating properly with British citizens, into our towns and cities, and in turn are creating ghettos, where 'mob mentality' rules, and the authorities are not willing enough to do something about it!

I lived in west London for 25 years so share the views above on the noise/selfishness issue. What I am challenging is the view that it is ok to sell those other things, particularly cigarettes, but not fireworks. In terms of human health, and cost to the NHS, that is simply not the case.

You made the point that your father was being noble and altruistic in not selling fireworks - on health/safety grounds - a view you are perfectly entitled to hold. I did not say/imply. he was a bad man, nor suggest that he wasn't entitled to sell whatever he liked so long as it was legal. There were no Asian mini markets round our way back then; it was the local post office/sweetshop that sold them. I guess they knew who I was and that the ciggies were for my dad. Though (or perhaps because) both my parents were heavy smokers, I never smoked myself.

Marco

Cool, and understood. We had such shops (asian mini markets) round our way from the early 70s, but we also had a local post office/sweet shop, like you. It was always the former, however, that tended to, shall we say, 'do anything they could for a sale'... ;)

Par for the course here Marco. Any excuse to make a racket.

By the end of September the 'locals' start letting fireworks off every night, building up steadily to the beginning of November, when it starts to decline. The law is totally ignored and certainly not enforced, with loud bangs into the small hours and fireworks used in the streets.

And it's not just a few individual. It's the whole fucking town at it!!

I'd love to declare 'open season' and do some enforcing of my own, but I guess that would be frowned upon.

La Chasse is the hunt. Loads of village locals with rifles and orange jackets standing around in the mountains shooting things. Boar today. The orange jackets are so they don't shoot each other. Apparently they discovered some while ago that boar are colour blind and so camouflage clothing was pretty pointless. :D

Surprised you should say that Marco. How would you feel if someone used the phrase "all that Lent shit"?

Yes, Barry, but the difference is when I'm celebrating Lent, I'm not setting fireworks off and causing a racket until 2am! And with it, forcing others to acknowledge my culture or religious beliefs. I do what I do in private, without bothering anyone. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn't live in somewhere like London if you paid me.

And you can bet your boots that the majority of those letting off all the fireworks aren't even Hindu, or have any real interest in Diwali - they just like making a noise for the sake of it! Honestly, I often wonder what's inside the heads of these people, other than stale air...

If Diwali happened in the same way as Catholics celebrate Lent, I'd have no issue with it whatsoever. We had the same thing here a few years back with Bastille Day, until the majority of the locals put an end to the fooking fireworks and noise going on until silly o'clock in the morning. It's a nonsense.

I've never believed in forcing others to take part in my culture, directly or indirectly. Either keep these celebrations private, or in a place SOLELY for the appreciation of the 'natives' and those who wish to join in, and well away from everyone else!

However, don't get me wrong, it's not Diwali itself that's "shit"; it's the intrusive and inconsiderate way that it's celebrated - as if nothing or no-one else matters. And you're just expected to put up with it

They celebrate Bastille Day in Wrexham?

Yeah, the French population here do/did... Surprisingly, there's a few of them.

I've always hated that 'we'll force what we consider as important on you, whether you like it or not' attitude. It happens in different ways all the time.

In a much smaller way, it happened a minute ago when 'Humans' was delayed by nearly 10 minutes on Ch4, because of waffle on the news about F1, again as if that's all that mattered to everyone.

On the same subject, look how 'Trooping of the Colour' dominates the BBC when it's on, or recently, the Olympics... I don't like being inconsiderately forced to experience that which I have almost no interest in, simply to appease the masses, or have the desires of the masses automatically imposed on me - in ANY aspect of life.

It's one of the reasons why I like to live as 'off grid' as possible, in order to minimise the likelihood of such.

I gather there's another large celebration of some sort next Sunday too and the whole town is likely to be subjected to a form of 'lockdown'. This kind of stuff happens about half a dozen times a year. Nobody can travel across town and even getting out can be virtually impossible. Parades and marches all over and the 'locals' all get in their cars to follow, jamming all the roads up. It goes on for hours. A total lack of consideration for anybody except themselves of course.
