Re the 110v deck you would need a step down transformer, Maplin do one that worked well on a cassette deck I once owned

PL-50 or PL-50L ?

Register at the vinylengine and download the manual. On the PL-50 (none L) The voltage is switchable and the deck apparently came with two motor pulleys, one for 50Hz and the other 60Hz....I never knew this but the main frequency is different in the east of Japan to the West!

Hang on a second Peeps the domestic mains voltage in Japan is 100v not 120 and the they have two mains frequencies it's 50Hz in Tokyo, Yokohama etc and 60 in Kyoto and other places depends whether they East or West. Military bases are 120v/60Hz. This makes no bloody sense at all, but feeding a domestic Japanese market deck with 120v will shorten it's life and depending on how well it's made and with what tolerances, blow it out altogether.

I have no knowledge of the deck posted but I would go for a good second hand one such as these :eyebrows:

I cant see one now but the PL-71 is a well sort after deck

As mentioned, if it's a Japanese deck you're importing that you need to step down to 100V and NOT 120V - as Paul rightly says, a Jap deck won't like 120V up it for too long!

Do not be tempted by the small plug-top type units - they generally use a thyristor-based switching circuit rather than a transformer and can put all sorts of electrical nasties onto the mains being fed to the deck. My second Japanese 100V unit actually came with one of these but sounds far better through the transformer-based unit linked to above.

Finally, as the PL-50L is quartz locked, mains frequency will not be an issue.

The 1st deck on your list of suggestions Alan is the one I am looking at.Seems like the description is misleading as he says the voltage is 120 whereas you guys are saying the japs run on 100v.Quite a good few excellent alternatives suggested by you Alan I am like a kid in a sweet shop.

Whoops just read his small print he does say it is 100v got to go to specsavers pronto.:doh:
