Hmm, before taking a punt on these I would first make sure I can indeed get audio cables from B&Q. I already have plenty of speakers with no audio cable, I won't get fooled again.

I wasn't going to do that and I couldn't be arsed to go elsewhere so I hung about and after ten minutes or so some girl did turn up and, acting like it was some huge imposition, started scanning stuff through at breakneck pace.
I thought my bill was a bit light, when I got back and looked at the receipt there was a couple of things that weren't on there.
She must have run them across so fast they didn't register.

I usually do ok at B&Q, because years ago my brother did some work for one of their regional managers, who in return set us up with 'Trade Point' cards with their best discount rate (apparently not all Trade Point cards are created equal). Twelve years on and the card still works, they scan it and knock money off :)

They also sell colour-matched cable lifters. And quite a bit cheaper than Future Shop :) At the risk of blinding folk with science I will say these ones are designed to offer a choice of seven different floor proximities.

When I had that experience it was before they had self service. It was when I had an allotment so would be about 2007 or 2008.
One job I'd hate is being the bloke who has to stand around the self service tills and sort out the problems and clear the baskets away. The time must really drag.

Is your space at the back of your house not big enough to use? Smallish greenhouses aren't super-expensive, and I'd come over to help you chuck one up.

While there'd be excellent "forensic opportunities" (even our worse than useless CSIs couldn't bugger that one up), you'd be expected to provide field dressings and maybe a blood transfusion (duty of care and all that). And a nice cup of tea while waiting for the ambulance.

Or you can plug an Echo Dot into that aux port and have free access to more radio stations then you knew existed. I use mine this way :)

Seems good to my ears but I don't think my ears are particularly sensitive. There are some very positive reviews with measurements and I've linked a couple below. I picked it up so I could utilise a subwoofer with the pre-outs from an integrated going into the sub and then the sub outs going in to the Aiyima.

I think they chuck in the last bit for the benefit of the teenyboppers who don't remember the world before Bluetooth and might expect the speakers to 'recognise' their iPhone and just start playing.

Some days bargains can be found at BHF on eBay, but this is not one of them, I can only assume that those bidding on this can see that this cartridge has a super transparent presentation.
I have had some bargains from BHF, but be aware their packaging skills are abysmal.

Yeah, ditto. I had an absolutely mint Thorens TD126 MkII delivered to me in sub-component form because they'd just put it in a loose box. And that despite me giving them packing instructions.

Interesting. If I'm reading it right, they're not Wilson but DIY and he's selling the cabs and just some of the drivers, and if you want everything he's selling it's £130 not £100.

So my current winning bid is £30, but if successful it will be plus £6 VAT & then postage. It's a UK sale, secondhand, so not sure why they want to add VAT?

I just spotted this, though - my first ever "hi-fi" was this exact model. Midi sized, with a turntable that could play both sides of the record, twin cassette, and speakers with square drivers! At 16 I was in love, and had to get it - I had started work, so my Dad got in "on tick" from Rumbelows, and I paid him about 3 quid a week for what seamed a decade. I was still paying it off when I realised how crap it actually sounded and started looking at "proper" hi-fi in secondhand shops.
I'm guessing I'm not the only one that has "nostalgia" for that crappy little Sharp system, as there are 4 bidders and 20+ watchers. I.m not going to bid... No, never...

I just spotted this, though - my first ever "hi-fi" was this exact model. Midi sized, with a turntable that could play both sides of the record, twin cassette, and speakers with square drivers! At 16 I was in love, and had to get it - I had started work, so my Dad got in "on tick" from Rumbelows, and I paid him about 3 quid a week for what seamed a decade. I was still paying it off when I realised how crap it actually sounded and started looking at "proper" hi-fi in secondhand shops.

I got a similar Aiwa in 1986 for £175 which would be a staggering £512.92 today. The turntable was a separate unit though. Took about a year for me to accept that I had to have something better.

Yep, linear tracking, then went all the way across the record, round a "U" bend, and played the other side of the record from underneath! It was like science fiction in 1985! Of course with the record only being supported by a label sized "platter" it wasn't the most stable or best sounding thing, but I thought it was cool until I knew different! (My best mate's Uncle Tim, a resolute bachelor (who I imagine spent all his money on hi-fi and records) was my hi-fi Mr. Miyagi! My Garrard 401/SME combo was one of his cast offs!)

My dad did drive me to Apollo to get the Aiwa but he didn't have any interest beyond suggesting that I buy the Mitsubishi system with the vertical turntable instead:

It was massively discounted down to the price of the Aiwa and came with the stand and some quite large speakers. But I thought a vertical turntable was a daft idea (I guess so did most hence the 50 percent discount) so I got the Aiwa.
My father was right though the Mitsubishi would have been better and would still be of interest today when all the rest are in landfill.
Those Mitsubishi upright turntables are definitely very cool, and I guess makes sense to sit on a bookshelf if space is tight. And yes, would still be of interest today - can only find non-working ones on eBay in the US - even then, $300.

I think the other thing that put me off it was the single tape deck and the Aiwa had two. All that copying I planned to do with those dual decks! Which never happened.
I think the only tape copying I ever did on the Sharp was Sinclair ZX Spectrum games! I did make lots of compilation tapes for the car, though, recording records to cassette. Happy Hour by the Housemartins was on several of them - at just over 2 mins it was perfect to fill that final bit of tape left at the end! Nowadays most singles are that short, although I don't think my phone has the same capacity problems!

There was a reported case of a reviewer for The Absolute Sound magazine finding that an item of equipment sounded better when used upside-down. I think it was a (separate) power supply for use with a preamp, the latter of which would be sitting on top, but the reason turned out to be easily explained: the top cover of the case was made of aluminium, whereas the bottom was made of steel; which offered better screening of any mains generated hum.

I'm a fan of these for desktop duty while I'm working. Warm tone, some would find them a bit rolled off on the highs for studio cans but for me that makes them a relaxing listen. No concession to style, the wiring adds a touch of Cyberman chic. Usually go for no more than £30 which in these days of pimped up headphones is a bargain.
Sennheiser make some good headphones. I had a pair (forget the model, but from memory they looked almost identical to those shown), however like most headphones the foam earpads started to disintegrate.
They look good - I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 560S to try "open back" headphones, but not used them a great deal so far. Interesting that those on eBay have a "curly cord" - headphones always used to have that, but seems to have gone by the wayside these days.
Only thing I use headphones for is Teams meetings. Can't abide them for listening to music.
Agree with you regarding the use of headphones to listen to music. I don't like the "in your head" effect, or when you turn your head the whole perceived sound stage moves as well - it's unnatural.
However I do sometimes use headphones with my computer, but only for short periods of time.

It feels to me that there's always an unwelcome 'creep' between the converted pound equivalent of an item's price and postage that is shown on the advert screen and what you see on the payment details screen after you've clicked Buy It Now. Yesterday I carefully double-checked something that was showing as £62-odd before proceeding, and lo and behold it became £65-odd at the end. This seems to happen every time with a purchase from another country and while I understand that the advert screen may only show an estimate the movement from one to the other is always adverse, funnily enough.
The number of things that I buy from eBay has fallen off a cliff in recent years, a decade ago it was a bit of fun and good value.

They do voices very well, perhaps a little light bass wise but that might be the source. Will try them on the end of the Luxman later for shits and giggles.

They were about £700 new around 25 years ago or maybe a bit longer ago than that. Not a cheap speaker.
I got some for £130 about 20 years ago from some rich bloke in Manchester (TT Turbo and an M5 in the driveway) who was selling up prior to emigrating.
This made me smile, not the optimistic price, but the vision of one extremely frustrated person, hands dripping with glue, attacking the speaker with a Dremel.

Isn't there a UK satellite signal any more now everyone's got cable or are they just based on an obsolete technology? I see our local Turkish cafes all have dishes so I presume there's still Turkish language channels available.
I wouldn't mind the air rifle with the telescopic sight but I wouldn't want to have to take away all the electronic dross with it.

I think there are still satellite channels available but those receivers look properly old.
The Italian tailor that used to be down the street from me, he had Italian telly via satellite, in his back room. The dish is still there although the shop closed more than ten years ago now.

The one under it with the wooden stock is a BSA Airsporter underlever. That's a classic that one.

It's just to much aggro to ship speakers. Cost aside it's easy for them to get damaged. I suppose if they're really small it isn't too bad but otherwise the heroic levels of packing required make it a no-go for me. In fact I won't ship speakers even if I have all the original packing, which I often do.

According to the listing, the saving would actually be nearly £33,000 :eek: With that kind of saving I could also build a dedicated listening room to put my complete system in to... with enough left for carpets and curtains. Just have to save up for some Nordost interconnects then.
The price for these cables new is £37,350. The selling price on the eBay site you quote is £26,750. You do the sums! ;)
(The new price I quoted seems to have disappeared, but a HiFi+ review quotes £43,399 for a 4 metre pair, whereas the pair for sale are 3 metre long. The new price for a 3 metre pair will be greater than 3/4 x £43.399 = £32,549, so the figure of £37,350 seems realistic.}

But however you look at it, it's a ridiculous price to pay. It is suggested you spend 10% of the system cost on cables, so goodness knows how much the seller spent on his system.

Despite admiring the elegant aesthetics, and undoubted fine sound quality, I try to eschew anything that requires the use of a remote control. Can't do anything about TVs and DVD players, but I can and do with audio equipment.
My Levinson CDP has a remote, but it is not necessary to use it to operate the player.

I do have remotes for the amp and the CD player. After trying them once I took the batteries out, and they're now in a drawer somewhere. I don't mind getting up to do the work myself, the exercise is good for me.

I hate it when driver sizes are in metric, it means nothing to me. I have to convert them in my head and I don't like using brainpower for that, it's limited!

I vividly remember the transition to decimal currency. As a child I was struggling to get a grip on the Anglo-Saxon base 12 counting (or whatever it was) with old money, so decimal made perfect sense.
But years later I struggled with the transition from paper files to viewing them as scanned images on computer.
I guess it's just a case of what you're used to.

As for miles vs. kilometres - when driving in Europe, I mentally convert road signs in order to understand distances.

Despite the speedometer in most cars having dual scales: miles/hour and km/hour (the latter being a bit of a 'bastard' unit), all odometers display the total mileage done by the car in miles. Perhaps it is different in the EU and elsewhere, except for the US.
I heard that when the US were considering going metric they looked to see how easy it would be to convert. There were two reasons why it didn't happen: the general public didn't like the idea, but more importantly it would have cost too much for the US manufacturing .industry to convert.
The UK should have converted after the war: there were so many changes going on at the time, one more wouldn't have made much difference. We didn't metrify(?) our currency until the '70s, and that was achieved with little fuss. However to alter all the signage on roads and motorways would cost a fortune, so that is not going to happen anytime soon.
I'm 1.7m in height; it says so in my old-style black British passport. :)

I was doing my apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery when we finally 'went metric' in UK - so I can work and think in either Imperial or metric, or, as I often do, a mix of both together depending on what fits best :lol:

The reason I look through those listings is I've been looking for a particular mid '80s Akai system the neighbour had but never seen one in all these years. Very few from any of the big Japanese brands ever come up from that period, it's mostly 1990 onwards (if you exclude the cheapo ones). Not sure why that is.

That's nice but it's a pity about the damage to the knobs. Never seen one with front outputs, can't remember if I've seen an Accuphase with front inputs either. Also rare to see a rumble filter in the power amp.
Now that I like, but I would need two of them so I could switch them to monoblock amplifiers. I also like the option to use balanced line inputting. Not keen on the awful US style mains sockets, but they wouldn't be used.
Shame about the damage to the knobs: it looks like the paint finish has worn away. No doubt they could be resprayed, but any equipment of the perceived high quality of Accuphase should use solid metal knobs, not painted plastic ones. :(

The damping factor of 500 is largely theoretical, suggesting the amplifier output impedance is 0.016 Ohm. However that ignores the loop impedance of the cable connecting the amplifier to the speaker. Thus the true damping factor will be somewhat less than the quoted value.
But all of this is academic: a damping factor of 50 is more than sufficient.
