Don't get too excited Al. It'd cost you as much again to get that lot shipped over. :)

The seller says he may not ship to the UK, so you will have to go there in person Al to bring them back!

Probably had children they were unable or unwilling to control. Never ceases to amaze me what people are prepared to put up with from their little darlings. Anyway they're not too bad apart from that dust cap.

Marco
23-03-2016, 09:22
Indeed. Kids need to be properly disciplined and trained not to touch certain things - but most importantly, adults need to ensure that the things they care about are also adequately protected in the first place and/or kept out of harms way!

It's not difficult, if you use yer noggin.

Marco.

I've got friends with children in the 8 - 14 range who insist that they cannot have a decent system in the house as 'the kids will wreck it'.

So if they tell their 8 year old not to touch something they don't expect them to understand and/or obey that instruction?

Quite unbelievable.

Then why not cover up the kit in question when they're in the room, or if the gear in a separate room, prevent them from going in there? Honestly, it's not rocket science!

With a bit of vigilance and common sense, there's simply no excuse at all for kit getting trashed.

Thought thats what i did... Told them not to and they dont.....takes a few times to train em you know... You need to try kids out mate lol they do!t just comply at first time of asking.....covering stuff up aint really practicle and i was buggered if i was moving it. Barry
25-03-2016, 17:45
An unusual arrangement: not stacked as such, more simply doubled up. I'm not sure about the imaging with this arrangement; at best the sound will appear to come from midway between each speaker pair.

Even so I'm envious. I have tried stacked 57s and they are absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately I don't have room for them, so I have to make do with a single pair.

Oh it is Grant. Stacked Quads have one speaker stacked above a second. They present a large surface area which would block out too much light. They really are visually imposing.

I don't quite understand the having room bit... What have you got hanging over your single 57s to mean that there's no room above them ?

They will feel over bearing perhaps in a small room but they'd still fit.

EDIT: Oh oops, seems that's already been said and answered! Even so, sounds like it's more of a room arrangement problem than size, negotiation with others living in the house about whether the speakers are infront of windows or walls.

Not really relevant to the value of the speakers, but I did notice some typical seller nonsense in the returns policy.

Return policy details
only if the speakers does not work! All returns require a return authorization number and must be shipped within 72 hours of reciept. All shipping charges are the responsibility of the buyer and a 5% restocking fee will be applied to the refund based on the selling price of the item

This of course is bollocks. If the speakers 'does not work'(sic), then the shipping charges are the responsibility of the seller and the restocking fee bit is gibberish.

There's a well known paypal collection only scam where something high value is sold, paid for by paypal, and collected.
there follows a SNAD or paypal charge back and the buyer is always reimbursed because there is no proof of posting / tracking.
to be fair... any seller of a collection only item has to be soft in the head to accept paypal. despite what eBay might insist on.

I seem to remember Technics did one as well, I used to spend time admiring it in the dealers window on the Headrow in LEEDS about 38 years ago. I thought they used VHS cassettes, but I think looking at it that Elcaset was a format of its own so difficult to find now. First one I've seen in all that time.

EDIT: Jesus talk about being like buses, this SONY is about half the price and in better nick.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-EL5-Elcaset/322042331230?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D35308%26meid%3Dd0a7d0a87ef247c0b5120e6b2d13 d2e7%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D1721 55066792

There are a couple of blank tapes, still sealed in the packaging on the bay as well, so not as rare as I had thought.

This is the Technics I remembered: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Technics-RS-7500-Elcaset-/182073736784?hash=item2a6470be50:g:KbUAAOSwhcJWOmo O

Not for Hi-Fi. They are PA stage monitors and have very limited cabinet volume and a high driver resonance. The crossover is 2.5kHz in order to protect the tweeter from high inputs, but this does nothing for the normally lovely Tannoy midrange. The drive units can be used in bigger cabinets with the SRM-12X crossover or similar. I've had a pair of these by the way.

I see no rectangular cutout for the Tannoy terminal and tweeter control plates. In the case of the 111LZ there'd only be one. Most likely a pair of Wharfedale Super Tens or Goodmans Axiom 10 units.

Too may tiny floorstanders out there quoting response down to 40 Hz but they never say how far down they are in level - or they just lie. But as long as people continue to mistake lots of mid-bass for deep bass it will continue.

At that price I'd want to see photographs that show a bit more than some knackered grille cloth.

All they did with that Hilux was blow it up, set fire to it and immerse it in the sea for 12 hours - that Kenwood looks like it has had far worse treatment.

Sorry, but a huge number of Lockwood majors were ceiling mounted in saddles and you don't get much more free space than that. I have never heard this phenomenon with Tannoys and the joy of the Lockwood design, is that it can be used against the wall or in free space.

No - they look awful! Much as I am a fan of well designed big old 1970s loudspeakers, why manufacturers felt the need to come up with rubbish like this I have no idea. The "shove as many drive units on the baffle as you can" approach rarely pays dividends, in my experience.

I have to agree. Most speakers that look like this (not all I'm sure, but most) are from the dire days of inefficient speaker-monsters that needed hundreds of watts up them to make any sort of noise. People wittered on about 'prat' because finesse was a lost concept.

Indeed these were the very antithesis of the Tannoy or Quad approach (which was all about point source and phase coherence - not exactly a priority with 5-way, super-wide-baffle monsters) ... for the most part these were all about brute force, the few that weren't low-eff like the Cerwin Vegas (wasn't there a pair that looked identical to this?) were simply about loudness ... high-eff in these cases was not about subtletly and getting the most out of single ended amps, but about getting ear-splitting volume from cheap, high global NFB sand lumps.

Fine for disco fans dusting off the white jump suit, anyone looking for delicacy and emotion can forget it.

The Akais may well be an exception but I wouldn't touch these with a bargepole.

Yes. There were certainly some iffy designs about. The Technics series with stepped baffles for time/phase alignment spring to mind, I did not like those. Nor was I too impressed with the Pioneer HP range either.

The opposite, really. Most Kabuki designs have efficiency in the mid 90dB range and are easy loads so don't require a lot of power.

Very high efficiency speakers will show up partnering equipment so if the amp or source is a bit rough-sounding then you will have a poor sound. As for point source these speakers are more like ESL57 with a bit of slam in the way they present the sound. Not quite as 'boxless' as an ESL but you get the idea.

Once you get into the 1980s you get efforts like the Yams Adam linked to that are just a mug's eyeful and not worth more than £50 punt IMO

That is true. Efficiency is high. Check out the big and lovely old seventies Sansui SPs with the wood fret grilles. Mid nineties sensitivity and very musical. If I recall, they sourced drive units from Coral and speaker units don't come much better made than that.

Great speakers, especially with RFC X-overs but these have had the mids swapped for something else and no mention of X-over changes to suit new drivers.

A demo would be essential IMHO.

Love of captive nuts perhaps, I would have just used 3 self tappers, so maybe they've been converted properly as the original mid and tweeter aren't the greatest.
