Saw them live about the time they released this, supported by The Skids (remember them?) who were showered by spit from the kids at the front.

When the Stranglers came on, Hugh threatened to batter anyone who tried to spit on them... which worked, they played a dry set :) I think they were a tough lot, and I reckon JJ Burnell would be handy in a scrap ;)

Strangely, his excellent (imo) version of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" from back in 1973 is not included. If it were, it would definitely be the highlight of this collection.

I am rather impressed with this re-release/remix, musically it has always been a favourite of mine but I always found the original release both on vinyl and CD somewhat bland and in paces muddled, just as if the mix was masking aspects of the recording. This new release on vinyl completely changes that, to use the old cliche as if a veil has been lifted from in front of the speakers, a match more open soundstage and more engaging. There have been some mixed reviews about the pressing quality but mine is near perfect.

2018 remix? 2022 release? They took their time! Should be good, they've had it long enough. If the changes are enough to warrant changing the sleeve art, they should be significant. I'll put this on my Christmas wish list - I bought the 2016 reissue, and I'm not a fan of the SQ.

I did fancy getting it on vinyl some time ago, but pressing quality was widely panned at the time, and being out of print, prices were through the roof. Couple of months ago at a record fair I saw an early pressing with a 300 quid price tag :eek:

I already have it on CD, which is perfectly good, but I could be persuaded towards the vinyl if SQ was right.

SQ is excellent IMO as is pressing quality, they are about for £75 but becoming hard to get.

I have never been quite sure why this is one of my favourite Yes albums, apart from the fact I had it on cassette in the day and used to listen to it a lot when in my room as a teenager. One thing I do like is that each song, one per side being pure Prog, is complete and well constructed in its own right, and each has typical Yes highlights with sweeping keyboard and guitar sequences.

Well worth a good listen IMHO.

I had a bit of a brain fart a few months ago and inadvertently pre-ordered Animals 2018 Vinyl from two different suppliers, the first one which I expected showed up over a week ago which is the purely Vinyl version, then today this boxed set arrived. I was going to send it back, but as I already paid for it several months ago and I am a big PF fan I have decided to keep it. I am going to have to get the Blu-ray player out to see how good that version is, the CD version I'm playing right now is rather stunning.

A note on this particular remix, IMHO it may be the best version available. I have an early 1977 Vinyl copy, a 2000 CD release, and this version. The original vinyl mix is OK but it does somehow sound somewhat dead in places and I think aspects of the detail are lost in the mix, the 2000 CD version not much different, it still has that underlying dullness. This 2018 remix is somewhat different, the soundstage is far more expansive and open, and it is much easier to pinpoint instruments and hear detailed aspects, I have heard some do not like this remix but I think for once a remix has improved the end result.

The 192khz 24bit version is available on Qobuz and a master version on TIDAL so presumable the same version, if you like Animals and stream on either then it would be worth a listen.

Following on from my earlier post, I decided to do some digital comparisons of this, I listened earlier to PF - Animals(2018 remix) on CD and greatly enjoyed it. I dug out and connected up my Panosonic Blu-Ray player (not a cheap one, but a 3D Blu-ray player with loads of features and Hi SQ), this was connected to my Audiolab 8300CDQ DAC using Optical, so PCM output from the player. My streaming is via microRendu to the same Audiolab 8300CDQ DAC but via USB.

I found Animals(2018 remix) on Qobuz. Both the Blu-Ray and Stream versions should be identical as both the 192hz/24bit.

I started with them in sync and could easily flip from one to the other with a press of a button. Initially I thought both sounded very much the same, but after only a few minutes of switching between the Blu-Ray and the Streamed Qobuz it became apparent that the Blu-Ray sounded better, there is slightly more depth to it, better defined bass, and the sound stage is better. If you had only heard the streamed version then you would have been more than happy, but the Blu-ray definitely has the edge.

So this raises several questions, it all could be down to my kit, presumably with a better streamer/DAC I would be able to obtain the same detail and depth as the Blu-ray, or would I? A difficult question and probably expensive to investigate and answer!

One thing is clear to me though the 192hz/24 bit version sounds better to me than the standard CD version.

I think I now need to very quickly just get back to listening to the Music:lol:
