First of the Christmas pressy music...

LP is interesting being 3 sided, with the fourth side having a sort of flower pattern etched in to an otherwise blank disc. Not seen that before.

Well, my Christmas wish list of records has been derailed a bit...

Mrs. P thinks it's a good idea for us to pool our Amazon gift cards to buy an air purifier she's spotted for the bedroom (who spends their Boxing Day seeking out air purifier bargains?) I'll have to go along with it I suppose, but then that's what they call "playing the long game" - if said item is placed correctly and is effective against my bed farts, this will earn me some brownie points to be redeemed in the coming weeks :)

In the meantime I have just enough gift card to buy either The Cure's "Mixed Up" album or Cowboy Junkies' "Trinity Session". Cowboy Junkies have won by a whisker.

So, onto the first of the four albums I did receive:

https://img.discogs.com/tIqvDZT4NKN2mHWeELnfsIimIkU=/fit-in/599x602/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-8162088-1470774255-2944.jpeg.jpg
And I have followed it with this:

https://img.discogs.com/_jUGELjy5HMO-369_cIDKjhv_Hc=/fit-in/600x591/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-1949857-1409730882-9422.jpeg.jpg
I hadn't expected much from this SQ-wise, and am pleasantly surprised. Remains to be heard what it'll be like with the wick turned up tho.

How do they compare with the Nuraphones comfort-wise? And the SQ? Probably price comparable with RRP, but there are plenty of bargains about with the Bose.

More comfortable by a fair bit. Sound is on par with my sonys; noise reduction is better than both. wife could hold up chalk boards and you wouldnt hear them:D

My hearing is helped by the nuras tho. ive a set of the smaller nuras too

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71HeOqJ+AUL._AC_SL1500_.jpg they are not as good as i hoped.. not bad either and can sound good if you get the fit right.

For comfort these Bose are best. Nuraphones have best sound tho

I thought that might be the case, but comfort is a big deal when you use them a lot. Which I'm betting you do. Do you ever use 'phones when watching films? I once tried mine (AKG K550) into my Sony AV amp to watch "Inglourious Basterds", and the sheer detail of the sound was startling.

I actually listened to this on Spotify in bed last night and enjoyed it enough to give it another listen first thing this morning.

The Heliocentrics – Telemetric Sounds

Madlib Invazion – MMS 039
2020

Lots of releases to go back through with this lot so that will give me some fun auditioning when I'm back at work.

It is described as Jazz/Rock Fusion but makes me think of early Hawkwind so I'll still it here rather than on the Jazz listening thread.

That's half the price it was. Having seen Sting perform this on TV just before Christmas, I immediately went onto Amazon to buy a copy, but was put off by the price at £14. Not any more, so the disc will be delivered tomorrow. :yay:

Thanks for the news Steve. Nice one! :thumbsup:

On now - Xmas present from the Mrs eldest son.... funny as I was caning this on Spotify when it first came out so much so that it became my most listened to album of 2021 on my Spotify phone account. Despite this I chose not to buy it at the time; lucky I didn't as I didn't know he'd bought this :)

Thought I'd finished with new Maiden releases but for me it is their best overall offering since 'Seventh Son..' although I have enjoyed a couple of albums including 'A Matter of Life and Death' during the intervening years, it seemed like they finally found a use for three guitars without it sounding like there is always one too many trying to find something to do.

Funny how the time flies isn't it :)

Still remember catching the bus into Bedford after getting home from school to buy 'Live After Death' on the day it was released, bought with the money I earned doing an early morning milk round :rolleyes:

Took the Mrs' eldest to see Maiden in 2006 18 years after I'd first seen them at Donny '88 when I was 18 :eek:

Finishing the night with some ambient electronica on CD.

Mine too, but I can only get away with it when I have the house to myself :(

Funny how computer generated visuals have moved on compared to audio - "Lifeforms" sounds just as fresh now as when it was first produced (:eek: 27 years ago!), but the VHS video of this (which I used to have) is of a similar standard to Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" vid.

Sure I hadn't listened to it before but some sounded familiar so I may have heard bits in the past.... that said I did enjoy it (the last track maybe not so much but it is a first listen), 'Super Stupid' is epic and I will give it further listens and maybe even get a copy.

Thing with 1970's albums is they seem short compared to modern stuff so now that is finished I'm listening to this on Spotify now :)

After reading the previous posts thought that I should check this album out as I'd never heard of it before.

On Spotify.

https://img.discogs.com/hMKGPod2VCIy0ABCyBy-m1bFEl4=/fit-in/600x592/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-1267887-1577037674-1215.jpeg.jpg

After a first listen I found it to be a strange album with and interesting concept and recording story - I quite enjoyed it and will very likely listen to it again.

Now listening to this on Spotify.

I was never particularly a Smiths fan but always admired Marr as a guitarist, that said I do have 'The Messenger' on vinyl which I bought upon release and in fact almost spun it a couple of days ago after seeing it looking for something else.

https://img.discogs.com/2U6kN6U3mhwpyGrMXlXPxPE463I=/fit-in/600x586/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-21397801-1640442404-2918.jpeg.jpg

I actually miss the days of Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly. What am I saying, no I don’t! But my kids still think Daddy Pig was modelled on me...

Anyway, great album that, not played it for years.

I Have my “songs I have obsessed about” Spotify playlist going at the moment. Just had Blur with Coffee & TV, now on to Toyah and Thunder in the Mountains, from the first album I ever bought, Anthem. A proper eclectic mix it is. Family are playing board games in the dining room, I’m in the study pretending I’ve still got urgent work to finish!

I realise that my initial comment was blunt to the point of being rude. I have never been impressed by Yes, despite seeing them live back in 1970 (?), and don't like the sound of Jon Anderson's voice. So why did I acquire this particular disc? Well, for some strange reason I do like the works of Jon and Vangelis, so I though I would take a punt on it when I saw it in a charity shop for 50p.

Played it again this afternoon and whilst I like some of the instrumental parts, overall the album failed to impress me and I found myself not really listening to it. Back to the charity shop then, for a 're-churn'. :rolleyes:

I heard a BBC radio 2 interview with this chap yesterday, he came across as a lovely un-assuming sincere man. If you don't know who he is then you probably should, several Billboard Top Ten hits, including his #1 multi‑platinum smash “Escape” aka “The Pina Colada Song”. This is insignificant to his other achievements in music, writing, theatre, film and TV. he certainly knows how to pen a song, lyrically and musically.

Have a read of his bloghttps://www.rupertholmes.com/about/,

Genre: Rock, Classical
Style: Prog Rock, Classical, Symphonic Rock

I recently posted I had this LP and liked it (or thought I did). I hadn't played it in ages, so I though I ought to listen to it again.

Hmmm - sounds very dated now; a typical effort by a rocker who wants to gain kudos by dabbling with classical idioms. In this case some of them are not original, and in no way sum up the character of each of the six wives. 5/10 from me (with a possible charity shop donation in mind).

Picked this NM record up last week in a local charity shop for £5, only just got round to having a listen, what a great album. A bit different from their more well known later stuff, it's rock verging on a big band sound with the horns, and superbly recorded. this will become a favourite player I think.

First day back and rather than stream Spotify I chucked this CD on in the jalopy on the way to work.

This is my original CD before the reissue with extra tracks and like a few other similar doubles it lives in the motor.

Possibly my most listened to Hawkwind album and I think the only one that I didn't buy on vinyl back in the 1980's when I first got into HW - must look to change that someday ;)

Picked this one up for £1 in charity shop today, a USA 1st pressing and NM+/NM.

Probably not everyones flavour this one, but from a recording point of view it's a stunner, amazing dynamics, punch and production, you just sit back and get blasted away with the big band, the vocals are recorded beautifully. The engineer certainly knew his stuff and did a great job.

You should be chuffed - that's quite a rare album now!! Not many good examples (usually scratched etc) of it are around - I think there were only a few hundred made of it :). I prefer the vinyl version of it because you can really hear the songs mix into each other really well but the CD version doesn't quite deliver that mixing quite as well. I prefer the sound quality of CD though (I dont want to start the debate of which sounds better, CD or Vinyl (although I'm always biased toward CD even though the odd album sometimes does come across better on Vinyl).

I'll leave the debate to the purists !!!!!!!! :rolleyes:

Not sure why this album appeals to me, it just does. So I've put in an offer on one on Ebay which claims the vinyl to be NM. I'll find out later if my offer's been accepted (they usually are). Nothing like the bargains you and Lawrence got though.

Glad I did. Great voice, great production. And Blue Bayou, just superb. This'll get played a lot :)

But all my CDs are stored alphabetically. Not sure how Roy would feel about being sandwiched between my CDs of The Orb and Orbital...

Started the day with a bit of electro pop:

https://img.discogs.com/pta7ACKNsU7JPrdmddA3bztr55Y=/fit-in/600x594/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-510258-1352028602-3568.jpeg.jpg

Could have been a bit full-on for 7am, but Alison's fantastic breathy vocals made everything alright.

Pigmy Pony

And following with this, their debut, and their finest imo:

Surreal, startling, cinematic, it's all of those things. And Alison's voice makes my hairs stand on end at times. Makes the top twenty of my favourite albums, but I ration myself so I don't get sick of it.

My set up really favours these 80's recordings - I suspect the 2M Black with its super-critical Shibata stylus. Thicker 180g pressings can often sound a bit thick and slow, thinner discs a bit 'faster on their feet'.

About 500 hours on cart now, so saving for replacement stylus. Maybe I should try some thing a little less critical :scratch:

This arrived yesterday, purchased from the bands website, I had not heard of them and noticed someone else posted it on a listening thread, so based on the comments took a chance. This is my second listen and I have to say it is superb, if you have a read of the bands biog on their web site it will give you and idea of what to expect. https://thiswintermachine.uk/about/

By the way the album is very well recorded and mixed, great dynamics and presentation, vinyl is near silent apart from the music.

A must have for any Prog Rocker!

Ah, the good old days when the local church jumble sale was worth the walk - these days the vicar's helpers would more likely take out anything of interest and stick it on Ebay.

Last jumble sale I went to, I was probably looking for Famous Five books I hadn't yet read. Wouldn't happen now - such racist muck would be intercepted and burned by those who want us to disown our past :rolleyes:

So I'm not a huge Fan of Pink Floyd's stuff post 'Animals', but I saw this for a quid in the charity shop and thought I'd give it a go. Very self-derivative, but quite a nice ambient + listen.

When I were a mere snip of a lad (7 - 10 years old), I used to like to read the Famous Five books. Terribly dated now and very 'middle class': the 'baddies' were always foreign or from the 'lower classes'. :doh: But - was "George" (the 'tom boy' girl) the first candidate for a potential trans-gender character in childrens literature?

Regarding vicarage jumble sale helpers picking out 'plums' for sale on eBay - I have no problem with that; the purpose is to raise as much cash as possible. After all it's what Oxfam do (as I'm sure so do other charities).

(I'm not sure my parents ever looked at the books I bought.) I've still got quite a few and going back to read them years later I was shocked how graphic they were!

I can still remember one story about 2 boys who liked to take radios and stuff apart in their shed to see how they worked. Then they decided they wanted to know how the little girl next door worked. Fortunately I had the sense not to copy the things I read [emoji23]

Around the age of 12 I became 'hooked' on the DC and Marvel comics. I was given a pile by a friend and my father definitely looked through them to make sure they were 'suitable' and, I suppose, non-corrupting. Looking back it might have seen to be very old fashioned, but I'm glad they did have my best interests at heart.

I remember bagging handfuls of Marvel comics from the church fete at a similar age. Generally random issues, it was always a treat if you got two or three concurrent ones. Happy days.

Never had this back in the day though it was often on when the Mrs kids were over as they liked the wide range of music that we listened to and I introduced them to beats of the heavier and more metallic kind.

For some unknown reason I listened to it more than a few times on Spotify last year, so much so that certain tracks made it onto my most listened to list on my Spotify phone account.

I think it was also because I was struggling lots late 2020 through to early 2021 and the deaths of both Chris Cornell & Chester Bennington, or more particularly the sad loss of them after all too brief lives struggling with depression and then taking their own lives touched me in a way that I never expected.

Two decades later still sounds good.

Whilst I did buy the 7" of 'Fields of Fire' on release as a 12 year old, I never really pursued Big Country through their career.
Flicking through the 2nd hand vinyl at 'David's' in Letchworth a few years back I picked up a mint copy of 'Steeltown' and always had it in my mind to pick this up sometime most likely CD which I nearly ordered on the big A earlier in the week.

I've stuck 'Fields of Fire' on the jukebox at my local a few times recently so when I saw this very tidy copy of 'The Crossing' in 'Slide Record Shop' today it was as if it was waiting for me :)

Sadly Stuart Adamson went the same way as the guys in my previous post but just like those the music lives on as timeless reminder of what they did achieve.

This qualifies as one of those, "I wish I had just stuck with the soundtrack and never tried watching the movie."
