+1 - absolute legend - check out the Bran Van 3000 track "Astounded" from Discosis which I posted recently, one of my favourite tracks ever.

The album I have was cut and mastered by Kevin Grey and sounds fantastic, although not on this album People get Ready is one my favourite songs.

It could be any of the other five: The Beatles, because you don't like them; 'Animals', because the lyrics are depressing; FSOL, because you don't like ambient, etc. etc. etc.

Firebottle(Alan) has waived his magic wand and tweakery over my phono stage, and the vinyl reproduction has never sounded so good. So much more ambience, depth and detail from this album and others, great bass, drums tight and controlled, superb transients and decay. Thanks Alan!:)

Cheers Ade, it was you got me into it :)

Something I've noticed - some releases are on Parlophone (as is mine), and some say Bluenote on the sleeve... All I can think is that maybe Bluenote did the original press, and Parlophone the re-releases. All I know is that I cannot fault this Parlophone one - vinyl roar completely absent, and the overall sound balance is spot on to my ears :)

I think I read somewhere that his other albums have had a rather more lukewarm reception - what are your views?

I think the latest, just called 'St Germain', https://www.discogs.com/release/7564034-St-Germain-St-Germain stands on its own merits, Ludovic Navarre used musicians from Mali, it was predominantly recorded at Bamako, Mali and calls upon traditional Mali style music, with other samples and style from Jazz. It still has the flavour of St Germain but with a different feel, it is very good IMHO and very well recorded/produced. Well worth getting a copy, in fact I think I will give it a spin next.

I have 'Tourist' on CD; so I'm not at all worried about vinyl roar! ;)

Regarding the Blue Note/EMI confusion, this is what my copy says: "(P)&(C) 2000 Primary Society. The copyright in this recording is owned by PRIMARY SOCIETY under exclusive license to BLUE NOTE/EMI France."

I have another of St Germain's recordings: 'Boulevard, the complete series' (1995) and don't think much of it.

Steve, I should have said that St Germain - Boulevard (the first album) is perhaps what you could describe as more drum/bass and dance driven, but not in a bad way, I personally like it a lot so is also worth a listen. It sort leads into Tourist.

And if it was a reissue with video tracks you may hear nothing at all :ner: sorry, I shouldn't be making light of your ML issue... Vinyl 'roar' might not be the best description, I mean it doesn't sound like the MGM lion, rather like distant motorway traffic. And it seems to be more of a thing on modern pressings than my old recordings.

Manufacturers and retailers seem bent on putting me off buying new vinyl, and they are now having a degree of success...

Vinyl ROAR, as Loz would put it, it is definitely not an issue with any of the St Germain albums, far from it.

Normally I value Barry's judgement, but then I do like a bit of drum'n'bass, so I've just ordered a copy :) But on CD (which is less than 3 quid from Music Magpie). My days of chucking ten times that amount on a vinyl 'unknown' are behind me I'm afraid

No worries - I'm just relieved I found out the cause of the problem. From now on I'll just have to be vigilant, and play any discs which have a video track on another player (I have four others).

Anyway back to St.Germain. I saw 'Tourist' in a charity shop and thought I would take a punt because:
(a) I had seen mention of it here (thanks Adrian! :) ), and
(b) it was on the Blue Note label.

There was another St.Germain disc there: 'Boulevard', also going for quid, so I bought that as well.

I'm playing it now, and haven't changed my opinion of it: boring ambient music, with annoyingly repetitive and unimaginative bass lines. Sorry!

But should I see any more recent recordings I would check them out. The recording Adrian cites with musicians from Mali looks interesting. I have visited Mali and love the music there; to the point there are many CDs by Malian musicians in my collection.

I think he put a band together in 2018 after 16 years, and then has a 2024 world tour - the Norwich gig is one of a few extra “warm up” dates added which were offered to newsletter subscribers - which luckily for me was one of my mates who got me the ticket. [emoji846]. I guess it’s a practice gig but will still be good to see.

That is interesting. I knew of Rollo and his work with Sister Bliss, as founder and a big part of Faithless, but having a quick read up shows that he also had a hand in several of the big tunes we listened to, even tried to dance to, in the clubs of the early/mid nineties :)

So I've ordered a copy of this CD (only £2.67 off Music Magpie), as I just know it will be something I'll like :)

Picked this up in a charity shop for 50p, 'on spec'. The only group I know with the name "A"; and easy to file away in my collection - it would be the very first!

Sadly however, it's not really to my taste, so back to the charity shop it goes.

So for a complete change:

And finally a recording which, IMO, a copy should reside in everyone's collection:

Air - Le voyage dans la lune (2012)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ca/Air_-_Le_voyage_dans_la_lune.png

Interesting back story to this one - a soundtrack to an originally silent movie from 1905- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_voyage_dans_la_lune_(album) - but equally great as an album in its own right. I think it's going to become an Air evening... :)

Nice - I bought "Desire" when it first came out in the mid-70s, and really liked it. It has been on my to-buy list for ages now, I really need to get round to it. But it might have to be vinyl, for nostalgia reasons.

"Joshua Tree" on the other hand - I've never been a fan of U2 really, but thought this album might be an exception. Turns out I only liked "Bullet the Blue Sky". So I tried without success to sell it at a car boot sale. Fortunately it was one of the albums that disappeared from my collection in the early 90s.

Bono reminded me of the "Zed" character from the Police Academy films, sort of put me off U2.

It's a re-release of 'Piper at the gates of dawn' and 'Saucerfull of secrets' packaged up as a double album. I bought it back in the early eighties or thereabouts.

Yes, I was in two minds about the programme, good to hear the music snippets though, I have Syd's two albums (also paired up as a double set) which I've played fairly recently, but haven't played the two Floyd ones for donkeys years, so it was a good prompt to fish them out for a hearing.

Yes, yours is the later, censored version, the difference being the top right, which originally depicted the shop front of a dentist's surgery, the dentist being called W.R. Phang. (Genuine business in Hammersmith). Mr Phang objected to its inclusion as NHS dentists were not allowed to advertise, so It had to go.

That looks interesting Steve, is it something that I might like IYO?

I think you might Adrian. Recorded at Real World studios, which is something to do with Peter Gabriel.

I'll be honest, I picked this and three other CDs (including the one pictured below) for pennies at a car boot a couple of years ago. Never got round to playing them. Then yesterday I had a bit of a CD cull, as I'm running out of storage space, and having them piled up on the floor would drive me mad.
But before getting rid I thought I'd give them a go. So glad I did :)

I'd describe them both as having a definite 'Indian' flavour, some great rhythms and excellent production. Don't expect to understand a word he's saying, and don't feel bad about it - according to the sleevenotes the sound engineers didn't either, and their editing chopped bits off his lyrics, effectively making them nonsense! So he had to set them straight :)

I always hesitate to recommend anything to others, as my tastes can be a bit ropey at times (according to Mrs. P), but when albums can be had on CD for a couple of quid it's always worth a punt ;)

Now something a bit more obscure, in fact it's not on Discogs:

Tarek Abdullah and Adel Shams El-Din - 'Wasala, Suites Musicales Egyptiennes'

https://www.budamusique.com/files/product_thumbnail_1030.jpg

Wasla is the name of a particular expression of the musical suite developed by different Arab traditions such as the nuba in North Africa and fasl in Syria. Wasla is a creation developed by Tarek Abdallah proposing to revive the golden age of this musical tradition through a personal approach to the Egyptian musical suite in terms of composition, interpretation and improvisation. Tarek is accompanied by the Egyptian percussionist Adel Shams el Din on the classical Arab tambourine known as riqq.

Born in Alexandria in 1975, Tarek Abdallah is a composer and interpretor who draws his inspiration from the golden age of Egyptian art of solo oud (1910-1930) – which is also the main focus of his musicology research work at the University of Lyon. He devotes much of his time to broadcasting knowledge of the Arab lute through courses, masterclasses and workshops, as well as numerous musical creations with various artists. Adel Shams el-Din has been acknowledged as one of the best riqq players of the moment, mastering the most complex Arab rhythms. A founding member of the Ensemble Al-Kindi, he has also played alongside such musicians as Loutfi Bouchnak, Hussein Al Azemy, Saοd Chraοbi, Zakir Hussein, Renauld Garcia Fons, Magali Imbert, Jean-Luc Fillon etc.

All the more reason to post. It's by looking at "Spinning Today", that we learn what other Members are enjoying, and perhaps get introduced to something new. :)

Absolutely. "Spinning today..." has done more to introduce me to unfamiliar music than anything in recent years, and long may it continue to :) Though at the moment it's bringing more music to my attention than my pocket can cope with

This arrived yesterday afternoon, so I played it in the car on the way to my mates, and on the way back this morning.

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61NsgSc5odL._AC_SX679_.jpg

First impression: album kicked off with a plodding 4/4(?) time signature which merely caused something to vibrate in an out-or-reach door pocket. That bugged the shit out of me.

Overall I was left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. The kind of nineties house music you'd hear in the big room at Cream, played to the young & beautiful who cared less about the music than what they looked like whilst dancing to it :(

Oh well you try stuff, sometimes it works sometimes not.

So before we get to the who, first the how !

So you know those irritating emails offering the prize draw for an Amazon voucher if you complete thier survey, the ones you delete or spam or both ! Well for some strange reason I completed the survey and as I remember it was way more than the 5 minutes of my time they asked for ! Well suffice is to say I won a £100 Amazon voucher, so yes somebody does win !

Now the next part is even more strange, having dutifully let "she who must be obeyed' chose something first, a new kettle complete with blue neon illumination ! My aims were more straightforward so what music delights could I purchase.

So finally we get to the part you are all waiting for! Having put Rick Ashley's "Are We There Yet" in the basket and the remastered Gregson & Collister A Change In The Weather, what else could we add and for some bizarre reason I Googled, best female vocal albums and there in the top 20 was this artist and album, I vaguely recognised her name but the album rang no bells, so in true 80's record shop LP browsing tradition I looked at the cover and thought that looks interesting so let's take a punt ! Now I could have gone to Shazam or similar and checked out the tracks but what the hell let's live on the edge !

Well its Country/Folk/Rock/Blues, I guess, if labels are really a thing ! If you asked for someone who she has influenced I guess Sheryll Crow springs to mind although Crow is only eight years her junior so that doesn't really work !!

The album rolls along with a variety of genres clearlly influencing the songs ans there's not a bad track among them and I guess two of the stand outs are "Right On Time" and "Can't Let Go'

Given the album was number 98 in the 2020 Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of all Time and it won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1999 I have must have clearly been living in a cave at some point !

Thoroughly recommend to anyone who has nothing of this great artist ! To those who do, what should I get next of hers ?

Next, well it's Rick of course, who is enjoying somewhat of a rebirth of late and of course there was his initial return to prominence following the 2007 Rickrolling mene and being voted Best Act Ever by Internet users in the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008.

Well this his 9th studio album is a far cry from his Scott, Atkin, Waterman days and his first album of new music since 2018's soul inspired Beautiful Life.

The album features Rick playing all the drum, guitar and bass parts and of course singing lead vocals and backing vocals along with some additional help from:

Dawn Joseph - backing vocals (1–4, 6, 7, 9, 11)

Lauren Johnson – backing vocals (1–4, 6, 7, 9, 11)

Rob Taggart – keyboards (1, 3, 8)

Lene Bausager – choir (1)

Tom Ashpitel – choir (1)

Katie Owens – choir (1)

Simon Mattacks – choir (1)

Peter Neill – choir (1)

James Knight – brass, saxophone (9)

Barnaby Dickinson – trombone (9)

George Hogg – trumpet (9)

Katy Cox – cello (12)

So if you didn't like the Rick of the 80's "Never Gonna Give You Up" era, then this album is definitely for you and if you loved Rick of the 80's then your gonna love this album too, because this is Rick of the 2020's and he's come of age !

Great song writing and superb vocals and if you get chance to go and see him live, you must, because he's a great performer and entertainer too !! "Never Gonna Stop" must surely be his mantra !

To end, no vinyl today, but the last of the three Amazon voucher purchases, this album, Mischief and the more commercially successful Love Is A Strange Hotel are a must have in any collection. Collister's awsome vocals and Gregson's great writing, arranging, playing and production are just superb !

Compilation of obscure Brit. 60s psych, most of them released as singles, all of them in fact. Great stuff. The Bam Caruso 'Rubbles' series, ran from the early to the mid 80s, I've got 1 to 10 on vinyl, and this one - 11-20 on cd, it was cheap, just as well, just half of it is shite, they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel after 14. I heartily recommend 1-14.

The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight (2003)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f8/CardigansLongGoneBeforeDaylight.jpg

"The album differs from much of the band's earlier work, eschewing the pop and electronic rock sound of previous material in favour of a sparser, alternative rock and country-influenced production. Its lyrical themes are also more mature, with subject matter inspired by domestic abuse, depression, love and fatalism"

So we start the day with a band fronted by a sadly missed Floridian singer, song writter and Wilbury.

This was their 2002 release and 11th studio album, the opening track is still a regular feature on radio but the whole album is a great exponent of AOR with every track somehow sounding familiar.

Title:

1."The Last DJ" 3:48
2."Money Becomes King" 5:10
3."Dreamville" 3:46
4."Joe" 3:15
5."When a Kid Goes Bad" 4:56
6."Like a Diamond" 4:32
7."Lost Children" 4:28
8."Blue Sunday" 2:56
9."You and Me" 2:58
10."The Man Who Loves Women" 2:53
11."Have Love Will Travel" 4:05

Best sounding DSOTM IMHO, I have compared a 1st press vinyl, later re-presses and 2016 vinyl remaster (probably from the 2011 CD re-masters issued then), most are good, probably because this was a well engineered and produced album in the first place. I have not heard the 50th Anniversary version so cannot say if it better to the same.

If you are into DSOTM CD/SACD then I would recommend you try a copy, there are a few on Discogs and a couple of very well priced ones on Ebay.

The best version I have is the 20th Anniversary Edition.

To my ears it's so good, I have no interest in investigating any later editions.

I used to have DSOTM MOFIi Gold Disc which was very good but IMHO the 40th SACD betters it and its rather cheaper.

It's rare for me to be listening on a Saturday morning, however, when the opportunity presented itself I reached for the recently acquired hybrid SACD 3CD 30th anniversary release of this iconic live recording. I have both LP and CD previously released versions including Jazz at the Pawnshop Vol 2 on LP and in all honesty they all sound great. This 3CD release does have the benefit of greater clarity overall and less obvious tape hiss and is a little less "warm" sounding than the original LP and I mean this in the most honest way, it's not to disparage the CD version as "digital" but more a representation of the difference of the two formats at thier best. Akin to auditioning the same audio system and swapping between valve amplifiers and solid-state. I have not as yet played it on my SACD equipped Pioneer DVD player as I am still looking for the best option to connect this to the Wadia 321"decoding computer" ! So it was played as any other CD using my Lyngdorf CD1in transport configuration upsampling to 192k and fed via coax connection to the Wadia.

Originally released in 1977 as a 2 LP 180gram album by Proprius Records. It is a multi-session recording made by Gert Palmcrantz on December 6–7, 1976, at Jazzpuben Stampen (Pawnshop) in Stockholm, Sweden and is regarded by many audiophiles as one of the best sounding jazz recordings of the 20th Century. Suffice to say these are some of the great Jazz standards played by five artists at the peak of thier prowess and working in complete unison.

Personel:

The recording features Arne Domnιrus, alto sax, clarinet; Bengt Hallberg, piano; Lars Erstrand, vibes; Georg Riedel, bass; and Egil Johansen, drums.

CD 1:

01 Limehouse Blue

02 I'm Confessin'

03 High Life

04 Jeep's Blues

05 Lady Be Good

06 Take Five

07 Everything Happens To Me

08 Barbados

09 Stuffy

CD 2:

01 Over The Rainbow

02 Now's The Time

03 Out Of Nowhere

05 Here Is That Rainy Day

06 Struttin With Some Barbeque

07 Poor Butterfly

08 Exactly Like You

09 Jeepers Creepers

10 How High The Moon

11 Things Ain't What They Used To Be

CD 3:

01 In A Mellow Tone

02 Gubben Och Kδllingen

03 Nancy With The Laughing Face

04 Struttin' With Some

05 It Don't Mean A Thing

06 Mood Indigo

07 Jeep's Blues

08 High Life (Take 2)

If you look at their catelogue you will ding they are very prolific. Juno records has most, they also go under the name Amorphous Androgenous’ when working with others. Their more recent series of albums are pretty good

It's called "Talkie Walkie" by French outfit Air. The name is on the cover there, though not obvious. I bought it earlier this year at a car boot, missing the front of the case. Unfortunately its shortcomings don't end there - halfway through it skips and stutters, buying itself a one-way ticket to the bin. Shame really, it was sounding pretty good.

A band's debut album is quite often their best, as it is a showcase for their work. Sadly in this case, I found Roxy's first offering disappointing, and only really like "Virginia Plain".

I had guessed, but what I wanted to know was what does it sound like.

I think I would have bought a copy, attracted by Einstein's equations from his theory of relativity. (Don't ask me to explain them - it would take too long; even though time is relative.)

Good one Robin. I have the original MCA release, and like them or not, Steely Dan took a lot of care in the recording studio, so I wouldn't expect an improvement only a difference.

Personally I think Ray of Light is the best of all Madonna's studio albums. Having William Orbit at the controls didn't hurt. He also produced most of her next album "Music", but by then Orbit's production style was everywhere and Madonna, looking for something more distinctive ditched it all and went instead with some French dude.

Think I'll give it a play now.

Totally agree. And Virginia Plain wasn't even on the original vinyl release, not UK pressings anyway. This debut is the only Roxy album I don't have on vinyl, and I'm in no hurry to remedy that... I think "For Your Pleasure" was a massive improvement, and is my favourite of all of Roxy's catalogue. Followed by "Stranded" (next one on) and "Avalon".

Good one Robin. I have the original MCA release, and like them or not, Steely Dan took a lot of care in the recording studio, so I wouldn't expect an improvement only a difference.

I’ve played my copy about six times in the last forty years. I taped it when I first bought it.

BTW I have used those polythene sleeves, but I don't like them because they slip when you put the record back in your collection. I much prefer the stiffer ones with a seam: they don't slip, but it makes reading the spine of the cover difficult.

I've still got mine, but they get little use these days. There are two reel-to-reel machines, and two cassette recorders.

One of the reel-to-reel machines is a "built like a tank" Ferrograph 632, whose idler wheels have now perished with age. I have a new set, but cannot see how to fit them.

The second is a Nagra IV-S, a portable machine and only used to play back tapes I made on the Ferrograph.

The two cassette machines are a Nakamichi BX-2 and a BX-200. Again I made many recordings, mostly off the radio, but don't listen to them any more.

Yes, that's the one. Not sure if I like it enough to keep it. Made with good intentions, but like a lot of mood or meditative music (whale song and the like), it is too repetitive and becomes boring after a while.

My dentist plays this sort of thing in his surgery, presumably to calm his patients, so maybe I'll pass it on to him.

Californication is the last RHCP album I bought, too - I love it, that’s going on now!

I stopped keeping up around 2013, once I went full on streaming and have rarely bought any CDs or records since - part of the reason I reactivated my Tidal subscription - I will have to check out some of the later [emoji2420] Chillies.

Actually that was a big fat lie - just checked and I do have By The Way and also from 2004, double CD Live in Hyde Park, and also went to one of the dates where it was recorded in June 2004. Christ, that was nearly 20 years ago, doesn’t feel like it!

I stopped buying music magazines in about 2003, I think that contributed to the lapse. Plus fifteen years not doing anything much except working, boozing and sleeping. It's worrying how fast the world passes you by!
