I always wanted a pair of LS5/1A's but didnt want the price that goes with them so I bought a pair of JR149's.

They work but the cross over's needed recapping. A quick call to Falcon Accoustics and several days later a package of new caps arrive.

The old cross over (which was a bugger to removed) looked like this 12266 before repair. I had to use a small hacksaw to remove the threaded bar which lives in the speaker and gives the cabinet some rigidity, this will be refabricated later.

Try telling that to my speakers, the nut's (pardon the expression) were jammed solid. I have some threaded steel so it's not going to be difficult to replace. I might do a little rewiring ( I can always store things), and move the X-O further away from the speaker and implement some proper female RCA sockets. I'm just taking my time and enjoying the tinkering!

Well its raining in Wakefield, so what better way to spend 15 minutes than updating this thread.

I have now removed all the old caps from both the X-O on the 149's, here's a picture of, these will be stored as spares.

Here's a pic of the BASS driver verifying the type I own, this and the tweeter will be measured at some point to see how healthy they are :)

Lots of crappy old glue from the original foam coverings. I'll clean this off at some stage.

Final verification of the X-O I've been working on. Check out the pink tacky stuff that was used to hold the X-O in place, which needs removing.

You'll find that crappy old glue is from the adhesive around the hardboard top, id leave it.. I would not worry too much just new top & bottom circular boards, New Grill & rebuild/rewire crossover. I wouldnt spoil the bottom cans trying to apply Binding post..

I think someone used to sell a selection of different veneered boards for em..

There a 'JR149' sub for sale in the Netherlands if your interesturd?

The grill's (steel) are in perfect nick. I'll probably do a silver rewire and save the old cable. I was hoping to repair or re-veneer the top and bottoms. The very base of the speakers is scratched and has a little rust so this will need some attention. Maybe some pics tomorrow.

I didnt mean the aluminium grills that are stapled on to form the front.. i meant the foam grills that wrap around.

Time for another update. I have decided to clean one of the JR149's today and see what grime we can remove. I started by removing the bass driver and gently cleaning with cotton buds and some distilled water, this is the crud I removed from the perimeter of the speaker and the driver unit.

I also thought I'd check out the back of the driver to see if it needed a respray. Thankfully it was in great condition. I also gave the lead tags a quick go over with IPA.

I also decided to give one of the speakers a decent polish and again see what crap I could removed. Here is the result. This will probably need doing a few times to get the best results.

Tomorrow I will need to do some shopping as I can feel some restoration work is needed on some of the paint work and I will probably also spray the dampening material matt black. The screws will also be sprayed and the chrome screws cleaned so they are nice and shiny!! I will also need to buy some red dots to replace the dirty ones on the front of the speakers. Additional tasks include designing a new mounting bolt for the x-o. I have decided to get rid of the long run of thread which ran all the way through the speaker. I have listened with and without the thread and can hear no difference in how the speaker performs. I'm will be utilising non-magnetic aluminium when remounting the x-o. OK thats all for now.

To get that black plastic strip off the back you have to remove one of the boards then it will just slide off..

The panels are still very much firmly in place, the threaded bar holds the xo in place under the base of the speaker. I can see where your coming from but in my pair of speakers it appears that it's not needed to hold the panels in place.

Another night and another small update. I usually spend one hor a night working on the speakers. Things have progressed a little more. I spent a little more time working on the steel cabinet last night and stripped some of the glue away.

I intend to respray the whole base plate high gloss black. I applied the first coat about 15 minutes ago. It's touch dry in 45 minutes but ideally will need 3 hours. I'll probably apply another coat before I go to bed. I may apply a third but will see how things turn out. :) Thats's about it for tonight. Tomorrow I might start work on the veneer, this will needs filling in and sanding down. I then have to decide the finish I want and buy some decent oil.

They originally had small self adhesive pads on the base. You can buy something simular in a circular self adhesive Velour from Wilkinsons or if you want they sell them in cork or rubber..

Its been a mixed night tonight. I was going to do a silver rewire but after looking at how the tweeter is wired I decided against it! This also has implications for veneering the base of the speaker unit. Being a complete novice I would have liked to applied a single piece of veneer and have done with but due the fact that the speaker connection wires exist into the base of the unit means this cant be done. I have come to the conclusion that I may have to leave this section alone. I will have another think over the weekend. The good news is that I have ordered my veneer. I decided upon this http://www.thewoodveneerhub.co.uk/p113/American-Walnut-PSA-Peel-and-Stick-Veneer/product_info.html. Yep, OK, not very exotic but I'm in my comfort zone with this. I noticed that after a little googling the 149's had three or four small feet on the underside of the xo housing unit as can be seen in this link http://vintagetable.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/rogers-jr149-loudspeakers.html. I will fabricate x6 (three for each speaker) of these at work over the next few days and probably apply them on with some double sided contact tape. I also intend to fabricate some new foam speaker mounts, but this time in 1mm EVA which should last longer and not deform like the flinsy version Rogers supplied. OK, thats enough for now some pictures later tonight.

The steel xo housing plate has now finished drying out and it looks excellent. OK, its not perfect but its a hell of a lot better than last night, see previous post.

Say hello to the new XO locking bolts and nuts, they need cutting down and a decent sized washer but thats an easy 5 minutes work. :)

Both speaker drivers had a flimsy foam mounting. Completely crap. I will fabricate a new for the tweeter and the bass driver and then fixed them into
place with double sided adhesive tape. This should stop them moving around and generally be a more sturdy design.

If you look at the standard of the originals, I am quite sure that this job will at least equal them and very likely better them.

If you did the number of antiques restorations that I do and saw what was hidden under the immaculate surface you might have a different view.

It's the first time I've done any cabinet work. I'm hoping to "tidy" the speakers up not restore back to pristine mint condition, this is beyond my skill set. I'm hoping to learn some new skills so I can enjoy my hobby and hopefully keep some old clunkers going so that they bring many more years of enjoyment. There is still A LOT of prep work to do on those veneer's. More later... :D:eek:

Its nearly 8 o'clock so its time for another update. The veneer arrived today, it was lighter than I was expecting, but I likes what I sees.

After a little planning I applied the top veneer

I applied the underside veneer. I was going to leave this alone, I was scared to attempt it and then I manned up and planned how I was going to do it. :lol:

I'm very happy with how this turned out.

I also found some atacama speaker mounts and decided to use them on the underside of the XO cover. I have simply attached these with double sided tape. I did originally want some black ones but these were FREE!

The speaker connector got a good going over with IPA, my word some gunge came away from that.

I have begun cutting down the EVA speaker mounts, these can be applied anytime so Im in no rush to finish these.

Roughly 8 o clock again and another update. Not much doing tonight. I managed to get one half of one speaker fully veneered the inner lip was a right bugger! I need to come up with a simple way of applying the inner veneer. I need a rigid compass and I think I've cracked it. The XO nuts have been cut and sprayed gloss black to fit in with the rest of the metalwork. These are currently drying. One speaker is approx 80% finished. The veneer should be applied tomorrow and then its just a matter of treating the veneer and one of them is finished. I filled any dents, holes in the second speaker tonight. The XO is proving a bugger to remove so this will back cut out later. The second speaker shouldn't take as long as the first now I have an idea of what I'm doing! :eyebrows: Only one pick tonight.

The speakers are now coming along at a rapid rate. I have applied all the veneer to both speakers and I'm just in the process of doing the prep work to polish and then varnish them! I'm experimenting with which finish i like the most so its probably going to be the weekend when I even start to work on them. I still have a metal base plate to prep and paint but that wont take too long. I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far, lets just hope they scrub up nicely! :D I may even make a custom pair of speaker stands for them. :eek: No pics tonight but hopefully a big update over the weekend.

My first speakers as well, then some Epos ES14. Or was it the other way around.

I found people didn't realise they were speakers, just somewhere useful to put their coffee.

Been a while, managed to get one speaker finished and the other well on its way.

Here's the XO recapped and refitted. The underside of the speaker has been re-veneered, french polished and then varnished.

Have a look at post #12. This is my first go at something like this so I wasn't expecting too much;) They have come out better than I expected. I have made errors and they are not perfect but I at least have a better understanding of what I'm doing which hopefully wont translate into errors of the next pair I do. I'd like to try some exotic veneer's but I'd also like to stick to square edges!

Top thread chap, that woodwork's looking good ! I've just bought pair of these and am very grateful for your capacitor related advice. I've been lucky, the ones I've bought are in decent condition. You would not believe what difference was made to the woodwork with a light wire wool clean and some beeswax, came up like new. Of course you do realise to finish the job you are going to have to spend £28 on what is basically two rectangles of foam !

Anyway, bottom line is these speakers are a revelation, against a pair of Harbeth P3ESRs they are not making me unhappy, quite the contrary in fact, belting little cylinders - punchy little buggers and a tremendous listen. Stuff hasn't come on that much has it ?!

It's great to see the classic gear given a bit of time and effort and brought back to life. Far more satisfying than buying a new box and of course in the spirit of sustainability too.

I actually sold this pair and then realised I'd missed them. I did buy another of very early. My new pair has the Mk 1 cross over without the fuse. Some say they sound better, I can't the difference personally. I did also speak to Paul over at RFC with respects to have a new cross-over made and he seems to think that Jim Rogers went a bit skin-flint on the parts when designing the cross-over and there are supposed to be some errors with it's design so if you really want to get the very very last drop out of the 149's I'd suggest you mail Paul at RFC for further advice. Hope this helps and good luck with these excellent little speakers.

Before I knew anything about hifi (what...yesterday? shouts a voice from the back) i was given a pair of JR150s.
I used them on the end of a particularly dreadful system and as the foams and tweeters were shot they quickly ended up in a local skip.

Just to add, having now also had the caps replaced (Falcon), this is to my mind without doubt worth doing. In all the caps, cover foam, connectors, feet and a bit of Velcro cost me just under £60 and I in terms of looks and sound I'm convinced they could now stand proud next to any small speaker. They really are a revelation.

Great. Glad to hear they hit the spot. I think the only way you could get better is to have a word with Paul at RFC and discuss cross over tweaks. I did talk to him but ended up spending funds on another project!!!! They can be pushed a little further but this means experimenting with positioning, spikes, and stands.

I did exchange a couple of emails with Paul who was extremely helpful though in the end decided to just change the caps (one straightforward option as suggestion by him). I was happy to keep things original, simple and, I'll admit it, low cost !

Did you splash out on new foam covers Andrew ? These really do finish them off.
