View Full Version : The "MYSTERY CABLE" - revisited.
The "MYSTERY CABLE" - revisited.
A lot of things can happen in a few months . . . . . .
David Brook has finally created the production version of the prototype cable he sent me way back in November of 2013. He has also set a price now for people to consider, which takes away the hot controversies the last time this cable appeared via me. It also has a name now, so watch out for the "SLIC Innovations Eclipse" because presumably it is firmly aimed at eclipsing it's rivals. In that intervening period too I have changed my CD player which meant I couldn't EXACTLY match the system I had when the prototype cable was sent to me for evaluation.
My current resident CD player doesn't have the same bass depth and definition the aforesaid Parasound player had, nor has it the beguiling treble and midrange either for that matter, so my second liaison with this cable has been difficult to say the least with a CD player that varies by a fair degree from the trusty old Parasound player I had previously. This has been remedied by having to hand another superb CD player, which I will also do a reviewette of very soon.
David tells me that improvements and enhancements have been made to this latest version by the inventor and there is no disputing that from what I can hear. It has the ability to dig even deeper into the music than the prototype could, so there has been quite a few more "blimey, not heard that before" moments which the prototype cable didn't give me, even though that one was a truly stunning cable in it's own right, which is no mean feat given how much the original cable wowed me right from the outset.
This cable has a better treble resolution than the previous incarnation and best of all, a unique trait I have never heard before from any other cable. With this cable is situ, the system just BEGS to be cranked up and to let the handbrake off. The more you turn the volume up, the LESS the distortion appears to be, so an increase in sound pressure levels has no commensurate perception of the sound being at all "louder". Sorry if I have confused anyone by the statement, but I believe that too many folks think that high volume levels should also sound "loud", so one can attribute this to the extremely low noise floor this cable has. It really does draw you into the music and more than once I have been shocked at how the time has simply flown by just enjoying the music.
Construction and appearance has improved too; this one has well defined shape and tautness to it in the construction, although it doesn't have any sooper dooper high grade audiophile plugs attached to the sample I have been given, although I am told the cable available for purchase will have, so I would expect this cable to yield even more performance with high quality plugs attached.
I did say that I would want one of the cables no matter what the final price was, so I will conclude this brief second review with a follow-up statement that I have one on order from MCRU, because the sub-£500 asking price is well within the price/performance envelope I can justify spending on because I have spent a lot more money and got far less performance on interconnects in the past. And no, I am not getting a few quid knocked off the price either
Hi Frank. Out of interest, have you ever tried the cables made by Mark Grant or RFC prior to this?
Hi Frank. Out of interest, have you ever tried the cables made by Mark Grant or RFC prior to this?
I have dropped a couple of subtle hints for Paul at RFC to send me one of his Plutos to play with but no joy. Haven't tried one of Mark's either for that matter, but I can say the same of a very long list of cables that I haven't heard either, but the list I have heard is rather esoteric and dare I say, expensive.
My favourite interconnects for a long time have been the Lessloss "Anchorwave" which are another awesome sounding cable that nobody has heard of :eyebrows: The SLIC Eclipse easily beats those.

Sorry Drew, only just made the connection between your name and your Italian location. How remiss of me. Bad Frank
No problem Frank :-) The reason I asked is that on this and other forums it may be fair to say they are held by many as the tacit 'benchmark' cables for performance and price. How the new one compares would be interesting..

I couldn't agree more Drew and as we well know, the cables market is as dense as a forest with as many leaves to match the sheer number available, so none of us can wade through all of them to produce a meaningful ranking of what's good, bad, or indifferent. I simply ask that folks have no arguments with my hearing acuity and musical tastes, coupled with that long list of the cables that I have tried.

Frank do you know what the exact price will be? I'm guessing if it's "sub-£500" that probably means it's £450'ish or so
The thing I can't get my head round is if the cable is 'near' to £450 it makes your system very one sided... your speakers are worth maybe £100 your amp maybe £800, CD player £800'ish and speaker cable £80'ish... if my brain is working right that equates to about 36% for amp and cd, speakers about 4%, speaker cable about 4% and interconnect about 20%
Am I missing something? :scratch::scratch:
your better at maths then me Nina :)

I have just looked on the MCRU website and "sub-£500" is £492 in cold hard cash for a cable up to and including 1 metre.
Thank you for the generous estimates of my system's value Bev, because the actual value is a lot less than your thumbnail sketching  Speakers = £100, Amp = £125, CD player around £250, speaker cable = £90
I am then asking you to accept my word alone that my truly humble system sounds like a £3k+ one, JUST by the addition of this cable. I took it all to a bakeoff last weekend and it saw off a system costing considerably more with some famous names on the fronts. I seem to recall in my previous tome about this cable that I would equate going from a £1k amp to a £3k amp because the amp hierarchy has to contend with the laws of diminishing returns, but I don't see this cable being saddled with that problem. It is what it is and rather than read the garbage I may write about it, you should ask Mr MRCU if you can have a play with one too.

That is very interesting Frank.....I might just get one in to try... :):)
you have got your system Frank at a great price and for my eyes.
you have a very good looking system, the cd player is tank like build and the amp looks so lush.
i did read somewhere before,i think on this forum that the cd player is best used with a dac.
or at least that is what the poster did

So if it all works in proportion, this cable makes your £125 amp sound like a £375 one :champagne:

So this cable is like an upscaling dvd player??
But how does this work, when according to the MCRU website,
'MCRU are the exclusive dealer for an interconnect that can only be described as the nearest thing to having no cable in your system.'
Most confusing. Specifications are unsurprisingly not forthcoming.
I like it...... :lol::lol:

Virtual Dynamics Nite 2 - The SLIC has a much firmer bass and sweeter treble
Nordost Frey - Not too hard to see off really, as the bass isn't the Frey's strong point anyway
A 4 x 9's silver litz cable made by me and a Krystal Kables Sterling 2
A couple of pure OFC copper interconnects of indeterminate parentage

Frank...knows cables.
I've known him to go against popularity (talking back in the day late Hifichoice/early Wigwam days..) back when doing so wasn't so trendy as it is nowadays...so I'm convinced there's no agenda here.
In my experience He says what he thinks, fashionable or not.
Those are the kind of guys you listen to.
Not heard the cable and not advocating it either, just my take on the the guys opinion.
I did say "subtle"
Yes. It must have been exceptionally subtle.
If you wanted to try one, all you had to do was ask.

I wouldn't have the cheek to ask directly Paul.
When people like Jerry and others have only positive things to say about your products, then the time to ask is long past anyway.
However, if you want a second opinion on any new products you introduce then I will be happy to lend you my ears :)

100% spot on chief, that is why I have sent Frank many many cables over the last 2 years for his opinions before I launched them (and other people of course) 90% were rejected has having a failing somewhere!

Frank May know his cables but previous experience of what Frank hears and what I hear is different. Therefore I can safely assume if Franks hears something there is a strong chance I will not. So the amazement Frank has experienced and relates is something I shall not persue.
Generally I find superlatives put me off. I have never been amazed by anything in HiFi except perhaps peoples descriptions of their experiences.
Thanks Frank for telling us how it was for you.
Just playing devils advocate here I guess but if Frank has been "reviewing" cables so long I'd have to wonder how old he is as this might affect his hearing.
Heavens above Alan, your post is I think the first I have agreed with totally with what you have written below.
I doff my cap to you Sir, because it is a truly good post :exactly:

How old do you think I am? I certainly don't suffer from Presbycusis because my hearing has always been very good and still is.
Even someone well into their 70's can still hear perfectly well with the exception of the upper frequencies, say above 15khz or 16khz.
I was a bit alarmed that you haven't yet tried the MG or RFC cables Frank. PLEASE at the very least, try to find a 1m HD1000 or 1500 - they do come up fairly regularly for not much money and since most of 'us' know them and rate them highly, I think you should have a set as a reference... The RFC £100 model isn't established enough for any to be available on the used market, but the same applies here too whenever.

So please may I ask what it is that makes this cable cost ~£500?
Is it only the fact that, in the estimation of the seller, that's a price that can be achieved, or is there some other reason?

I am completely in the dark as much as you are Chris. I know nothing at all about the metallurgy being used, or the dielectric, or how it's assembled, because it's wrapped in a black woven outer mesh and several layers of heatshrink over the plug/cable interface. I had a bit of a fumble with the prototype and that felt like is was a plaited weave construction inside the sleeving, but this latest one is put together much better so it's almost a tight tube. I would not dream of taking a Stanley knife to it to peek inside because it has been sent to me on trust, so it hasn't ever entered my head.
The entire sum of my knowledge is that it's like no other cable on the market because it's a new/recent invention and has patented feature(s).
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Latest cable from Atlas.............................
Atlas stunned the industry with the introduction of what is almost certainly the highest performance interconnect and speaker cable available at its price; a cable researched, designed and developed in Scotland by Atlas (Scotland) Ltd. The Atlas Mavros.
That was just the beginning, we're now proud to reveal the extraordinary Atlas Asimisymmetrical interconnect. Building on the work that led to the Mavros design, the Asimi adopts the same World-leading construction, but with the added benefits of pure silver conductors, manufactured using the highest-quality technique for drawing pure silver. "Ohno Continuous Cast" or OCC, used in the manufacture of high quality Atlas copper cables, increases conductivity of the material, in this case pure silver, by ensuring that there is less than one grain or signal deleting crystal boundary in about 700 feet of conductor! OCC silver allows the signal to travel through a continuous conductor instead of traversing repeated grain boundaries - in other words, the signal has a faster, cleaner and more direct path to follow.
Our attention was once again focussed on the coating that insulates and protects the silver. The Asimi has these conductors enveloped in our new microporous Teflon dielectric. This new air spaced foam improves on the performance of the best solid teflon or PTFE insulators, by providing a 30% greater signal velocity and better integrity, particularly in the area of high frequency delivery. This VOP (velocity of propagation) is achieved because the new material has a dielectric constant of around 1.3 - significantly better than the 2.1 achieved by the more typical PTFE insulators which up to now were the best available in Hi Fi or audio visual applications.
The Asimi interconnect is supplied terminated with the patented Atlas direct silver plated non compressing, solder free, double screened, self cleaning, RCA plugs which are formed from OCC copper thus ensuring a consistent signal path. High quality, exclusive, solder free Atlas XLR connectors are available as an alternative.
The construction of the Asimi silver interconnect cable consists of a pair of conductors, each made up from six bundles of 12 mult conductor wires plus a thicker wire in the centre. Each bundle of conductors is insulated with a layer of microporous Teflon and surrounded by a FPE (Mylar) jacket which in turn is covered by a continuous Copper-Mylar electrostatic screen and a silver plated copper close weave shielding braid ensuring the minimal pick up of RF interference and noise. The outer sheath is made from hard wearing PVC covered by a decorative silver/white woven cotton.
The Asimi interconnect cable is designed to be 'invisible' - delivering performance comparable to no direct connection of the signal. The Asimi is an outstanding product, designed by Atlas to reveal the entire content of the recording. In listening tests, the results are surprising; the Asimi introduces an air and ambience of sound hitherto hidden. Visit an Atlas stockist, listen and prepare to be amazed!
You can keep all the above nonsense for me as its £2700 for a 1 metre interconnect, who says people like to know what they are buying, we need to be able to afford it first! Me included!
Maybe all the marketing waffle is used in conjunction with the price, more waffle higher price maybe?
I am sure the cable is excellent by the way.

No contest at all Bev.
As I said in my original write-up back in November, virtually all cables have a flaw somewhere in their sound envelope, which manifests itself as maybe having a stunning treble performance with a lacklustre bass, a midrange suckout effect yet great treble and bass, great bass and not quite so great treble, so on and so forth, with combinations/permutations thereof and in various degrees of severity. In other words a whole series of compromises, so little wonder that many if not most are being used as "tone controls" or their flaws are conveniently swept under the carpet under the guise of "synergy mismatch", or "not to someone's taste". That is why for so many years I have been banging on about that there is no such thing as a PERFECT cable, but some are being created with less FLAWS than others. When you look at it from that perspective, suddenly the whole cables thing begins to make a modicum of sense - at least I think so.
I am not saying that the SLIC Eclipse interconnect is perfect by any means because it too has it's flaws, but I reckon those flaws are so small and so insignificant they do not impede at all on the listening experience, nor are they in my opinion the limiting factor in a system's performance, so the true underlying character of the system shines clearly through. There is then of course the danger of using a cable like this that can lift the metaphoric veil by it's introduction that another cable with a different set of flaws has been obfuscating and some folks may not like what results when that is removed. That of course is well outside my sphere of influence in this and I can only relate as best as I can to you folks what I have here on my own system with my own hearing acuity.
I was playing around with my new wonder discovery (the £1.99 Lidl pucks!) last night under various parts of my system and was astonished how much more detail was being retrieved by the lumps of rubbery stuff shoved under the feet. Stunning microdynamics heard so clearly you could almost reach out and touch them. But then it struck me that if I didn't have the SLIC cable in situ, would I be hearing that same level of improvement from small rubber puck thingies? Hmmmmmm. So, that is my next job today . . . . .

I have been in touch with MCRU.
I intend to trial this cable soon in the context of a high end system and competing against Nordost Valhalla £4K per metre.
I did try the top of the range from another manufacturer mentioned in this thread and it couldn't touch Valhalla.

I maybe one of the first peeps to order the SLIC Interconnect from David, at MCRU, on his 30 day trial
As soon as I have placed it into the system I will let you all know what I think of it, and I hope you know by now that I will be very honest about my findings !!
It's quite an expensive cable so it will have to be VERY good against my current cable for me to keep it
If anyone is wanting to try this new SLIC cable why don't you "put your money where your mouth is" and order a set.... don't keep expecting dealers to send you a free set of cables for you to try....
Take the manufacturer's up on their offer's.. this time of a "30 day Money back Guarentee"
I will let you all know what I think of this cable as soon as I receive it.... I can't wait ;)

Rest assured the price is a bit "salty" for me too
However I will report back, honestly, about the cable's performance once I receive it and plumb it into the system
If it's a load of rubbish I will say so but if it's an upgrade to my present cable then I will also "spill-the-beans"... trust me

I'll write up some thoughts shortly; I'm intruiged to say the least.
I ploughed through the Patent document to discover what the magic in the cable might be.
I would be amazed if a significant difference emerged. It is down to the way the wires are not tightly twisted bundles or just single wire conductors and the separation between the conductor sets. I don't think the patent office take any interest in a patent details (check validity).
If anyone is interested to see here is the patent document https://data.epo.org/publication-server/rest/v1.0/publication-dates/20090107/patents/EP1509932NWB1/document.html
Best of luck to those willing to spend £500. Buying Tellurium Q taught me not to flash out on different cable techologies.

Ye gods, you feel like opening a vein after just a few minutes of reading that lot
Like I said in an earlier post, I'm not bothered if the major constituent of this cable is dog poo, what I do care very deeply about is how it conveys music to me and in that respect it excels.
I had real trouble last night after a 4 hour listening sesh to switch the system off and go to bed and if the missus hadn't given me some :donk: then I probably would have carried on until dawn, it was that good.
I played several live albums and it was totally surreal getting the feeling that you were right there in the audience and I swear I could hear the annoying prat behind rustling his sweet papers and slurping his drink, it was that tangible and real sounding. Given that over the past 40-odd years the best I have heard from a live recording is a homogenised mush with the clapping and cheering rolled into a huge ball of rushing/shushing type of noise rather than countless individuals expressing their pleasure with their hands, pulled into razor sharp focus.
If anyone has bought and/or heard the London Grammar album "If you wait" then you will know the particular way it has been recorded. The depth and reverb I can hear is thrown out in all directions and extends a lot further/higher/wider and goes on for longer too. The second track has the guitarist drawing his fingers along the strings on the fret and and it has such a crisp rasp as the fingers encounter the individual ridges on the strings, one by one.
It really does scour out the tiniest little nuances in the music with recordings you must have heard countless thousands of times before and yet, they were coming thick and fast every second. I played a couple of CDs a few times over just to confirm that this was no accident.
The noise floor is just not there; you can turn, turn, and turn some more on that volume control and it never sounds "loud" or distorted.
You might then think that this is a "bright" sounding cable but it certainly isn't, because the midrange and bass are there in perfect proportion and accuracy.
I don't have an esoteric or expensive system by any means and the value of the cable probably outstrips the rest of the system put together by a comfortable margin for what I paid for it, but it does tell me that all the other cables that I have used before have all masked it's full potential, so why now should I go spending thousands of pounds "upgrading" everything else and reverting to those other cables JUST to achieve the sound quality I have right now???
Thought David left the shopping to the maid and the chauffeur ?

Well, while the smilies were tongue-in-cheek (a form of humour that appears to escape you), I agreed with the point that Martin (realysm42) was making. There was no insult intended.
I was simply stating facts, based on what I've observed to date, which is that whenever there is a cable thread, you can almost guarantee you'll pop up to pooh-pooh/discredit/undermine anything except that which endorses your audio ideology, and proceed to needle those of an opposite mindset, however thinly disguised that may be. In that respect, you are Pinky MKII :)
However, like others, I also applaud this remark:
We are a forum of diverse persons, equipment, musical tastes and equipment preferences (I hope) enjoy the wire and enthuse away.
Perhaps in future then, rather than introduce negative vibes into a thread relating to a product, which as you say you have no interest in buying, you could just leave it alone, and allow those who are interested in the product being discussed to "enthuse away" in peace? ;)
What do you think about the wire?
It's not something that interests me, as I'm more than happy with the cables I've got. That is why, as I'm not in the market to buy the cables concerned, I've largely stayed out of the discussion.
You might want to have a think about that, in terms of your own contributions to this thread and others like it in future.

Of course Dave, that is a given and has always been so. But it would be wrong for anyone to pre-judge on that basis alone, because for me it's what falls out of the end in music terms that is important so how it gets there isn't really for me to speculate upon and that is the sole criteria I will use when listening to these cables in question.
The real question therefore is "If component A is XXX times the price of component B, does the absolute sound quality of component A justify the additional expense over component B or not?" Sadly, many of us have muttered those immortal words to ourselves many times before emptying our wallets
Of course, it 'helps' if you don't know whether cable A costs 20x cable B, or vice-versa, because then it's solely your ears that are making the judgment as to which is better*
* Assuming a difference exists, usual disclaimers apply, money back if not satisfied, no animals were hurt during the making of this post, may contain traces of nuts.

I agree, that is a real hindrance in such comparisons, but not insurmountable.
I cannot guarantee there is no traces of nuts though
One of the more unpalatable aspects of inhabiting hifi forums (or any forum dedicated to equipment of various sorts for that matter) is that they tend to contain a minority who seem to take great delight in criticising members purchase and listening choices, or even where they have purchased their beloved item, for whatever reason. WTF it has to do with them is beyond me, you'd think it was their own money being spent by some of the reactions. Us humans are a diverse lot, individually we have our own likes and dislikes however that doesn't mean these will necessarily be shared by others. Try to keep this in mind when discussing peoples kit and in the immortal words of Bill & Ted, "Be excellent to one another..." ;)
Some of us though, have many years of doing just that and possibly coming out the other end rather poorer, older and hopefully wiser in the long run. FFS, I used to swap fuses round in mains plugs, turn LP12 belts upside down and inside out and similar with the bloody felt mat. I thought the differences were 'huge' and worthwhile - and then I heard a Spacedeck, which trounced a late 80's spec LP12 in all the areas an LP12 supposedly beat everything else. All this faff just didn't seem useful any more. I then heard a Croft preamp at a then £750 at least equal an ARC at £2500, had some race-tuned valve power amps that ate their over-stressed output tubes in a year (should have bought a pair of EAR509's when they cost £2500 or less) and so on with some Epos 14's that could sound so magical in the midrange if used right.. You can guess the rest regarding interconnect cables costing over a ton where I'm concerned.
The patent application is interesting. However, it does seem rather like what XLO were doing 20 years ago.

Have you considered the difference between a blog and a forum? Blogs are personal comments and what you are deprecating is valid for a persons blog, bad show old chap on a mans blog. Forums have existed for thousands of years and people disagree with each other in them. Some even try to use formal debating ways and argue just for the skill of it. But people disagree and it is expected that they will do lest we all become nodding blogers. If you want to discuss small groups there are many, moderators for example are one. Idea how about a blog room to accommodate the need you speak of and leave the forum to be a forum?
http://theartofsound.net/forum
So is it 'unpalatable' to discuss the merits of perhaps somebody getting ripped off? Its only an opinion anyway, which is open to discussion surely - isn't that the purpose of an open forum?
Maybe a refresh of the AoS ethos is due Dave, but of late that seems to be going down the toilet somewhat as the financial 'spin' of must have products rises to the top rather more than it used to (IMHO).

AFAIK, no-one on AoS apart from Effem has yet reviewed this cable; a few others have bought on a trial basis but have yet to report their findings. In any case I would argue that it's perfectly in order to express doubts about the vfm of an item, whether one person or a thousand people have bought it. Indeed Marco has done just that on several occasions, and if it's OK for him to do it, then surely it's OK for anyone else to do so.

I used to buy hi-end cables, not anymore. Something like a Yannis Tome, Mark Grant or a RFC product is more my domain nowadays. I used to be a Nordost lover, now a just think about VFM. If I think I'm getting VFM and I like the price, I purchase. No VFM, no purchase, regardless even if sonically there is an improvement. This simple rule keeps my bank account happy and myself happy in the knowledge I've spent the least amount of money crafting my current systems.

From what I gather the term "ripped off" has a much broader spread of meaning than ever it used to have.
One of my favourite sayings of late is that people these days know the PRICE of everything, yet they know the VALUE of nothing.
People buy cheap, not because it is good, but because it is cheap and has "saved" them money, then bemoan when it breaks or stops working then grizzle about it endlessly afterwards, so they then buy better for more money which then works and lasts longer, BUT, that has cost more than buying using sense not thrift in the original purchasing choice and done the right thing first time around.
Tools are a very good example and anyone who has a busted socket or spanner set malingering unused in the shed because it has broken will attest if they are entirely honest that VALUE should have taken precedent over PRICE.

So I've plumbed one in (replacing a tq black diamond) and still await the second to replace yet another black diamond.
I don't want to say too much right now because its not a fair test. If you believe cables take time to settle (I do) it hasn't and of course having another cable in tars the end result. Having said that, I'm very impressed with the sound of the system right now and am excited to try it properly.
I'm predicting good things from initial experience.
Its interesting to see how differently people define vfm.

Hi Stephen,
I think I should start by saying the TQ black diamonds are excellent cables, they really compliment the ultra black speaker cables I use. I was worried (and must admit still do, until I've got the whole loom in) that something would be lost.
These cables are very thick and feel substantial, but not at all stiff, which is handy. After listening to some familiar tracks I started to hear low level details revealed that I hadn't known of before, small inflections in singers (I think I remember reading someone mentioning London Grammar sounding fantastic, I can agree with this). One thing I love about the tqs is their lucidity and relaxed presentation of music and thankfully this remained, so combined with extra detail is a win for me.
I would say that I've got a pretty revealing system and Usher speakers are known to like being fed quality, I was sat smiling for a good few hours this afternoon.
Going back to the point of value, consider the price of this cable vs the tq (£495 / £850) and I think people with the budget should be excited.
I'm at my Grandparents right now but am looking forward to getting some more hours on them and of course the other set in, then I'll make some more definite and dare I say fair comparisons.

Martin, I am keen to hear from you what happens when you give the old volume control a good twist beyond the level you would normally listen at, then read my first post on this thread again and see if we have agreement on that aspect of the sound.

Frank swears blind that he's not working in cahoots with you (which I happen to believe) and lots of members feel that he's generally an all round good egg, so they pay attention to what he writes. But now you trip up in a non-trade thread, saying stuff that you hope will get you some sales.
Serious question to Frank: Has it crossed your mind that you're being played?
(no malice intended to you at all Frank)

Oddly enough I can easily relate to what David Brook says above because if it wasn't my missus giving me earache I would probably be listening to silly o`clock too. If there is one thing he should not do is bust in on these threads and let his enthusiasm run away with him because it DOES create the perception that I am being led along - which I certainly am not.
As for being used or manipulated by the man I would firstly let him know what my feelings were in no uncertain terms and if I was not genuinely enthused by what I am hearing and believe sincerely that it might, just might, stimulate people to follow in my footsteps and at least TRY one of the damn things themselves.
Since my first outpourings about this cable back in November and this thread too, I have been both ever mindful and TERRIFIED too that others may not find it all that I say it is and trust me I did an awful lot of soul searching before I opened my big gob. I could easily have kept quiet and there have been times when being accused of being a shill, patsy, stooge, hurt quite a bit personally, but I refer you all back to the very last line in my first post way back in
November.
We are mercifully reaching the point where you all will no longer have to rely on my words alone because I gather
that others have taken up the trial offer to see for themselves what the fuss is about. Martin has shown some pleasure in what he has heard thus far which means I will have the burden taken off my shoulders and can stop chewing my fingernails lol

Frank,
I'm glad that you realise that my distaste is not directed at you. Nor is it, in fact, about the cable or it's maker. I also can only wish well to those who, in the future, stump up the 500 smackaroos to be the proud owner of a set - good luck to them, I say.
Indeed, I am fully prepared to believe that this is a good cable. Conversely (and not just in my capacity as a consumer), I'd argue over whether it's a good product because I believe that a well judged price is part and parcel of the things that make a product good. Well judged prices suit both seller and all potential buyers rather than a mercenarily chosen sector of the market. If it were able to deliver all that the claims being made for it say, then it should sell at a much lower price point. Any product that truly sweeps all others away will sell in relative volume and will, therefore, earn its keep. Unfortunately though, greed usually puts paid to that concept.
What I strongly object to, is the cynical way that this saga has been engineered to play out. I'm not so naive as to imagine that it is a retailer's duty to provide me with goods at a loss to themselves, but I do expect to be accorded with some intelligence. And, actually, a little respect, if that's OK with everyone. I didn't become a member of this forum to be a 'mark' for a queue of salesmen and, as a moderator, I like to think that I do my best to treat everyone fairly, according to the rules. Unfortunately, there is some grey area in those rules where people are put on trust to behave in the spirit of the rules, and it makes me angry when I see it being exploited by those who ought to know better - not least because they have been repeatedly told when they have crossed the line of what is acceptable.
Now, I'll shut up!
Maybe we need a reciprocal rule to go with the one preventing non-trade posters criticising products in trade threads, whereby trade posters are prevented from commenting on their own products in non-trade threads (other than to correct factual errors).
Surely the neighbour of The Beast would be at 664 or 668 - 667 would be on the other side of the road.

Fair points Chris, but as you will also appreciate I have played no part whatsoever in the pricing of the cable and much as I would have personally liked to have paid less (who wouldn't?) for this cable I can also see the value in the product.
Let's be honest, there are countless other cables at much higher prices than this one (£15k Odin anyone?) and I have stated more than once that it has given me a better performance than a good many others previously have at a much higher cost, so there is a very good likelihood that I will keep this one and not concern myself with searching for something to best it. For me personally then it has good value rather than just focussing on it's price alone.
Arguably too, you could accuse me of hyping up other cables like TQ and Belkin, yet nobody accused me then of being a shill/patsy or whatever for those marques.
I think the big issue here is not the cable itself, it is not me gushing enthusiastically about what it can and can't do, it's not about it's position in the marketplace, nor it's price, but the fact that Mr Brook has to polish up his PR skills a tad and not appear to be peddling his wares at every opportunity. I was very mindful of that when I occupied the same position and there were a couple of times that I was more errrrrm "enthusiastic" than perhaps I should have been, but I did learn the correct etiquette. In his defence though, if HE doesn't get enthusiastic about the products and services he offers, then who the heck can? As I understand it too, those that are questioning his motives have also had dealings with the man and found the products he sells to be good quality and the service exemplary, so let's give the man some credit where it's due.
I personally don't have issues with dealers participating on the forum, PROVIDED THAT they divest their knowledge in all areas of the forum offering advice to folks that is not directly within their sphere of commercial activity. I think also part of the problem with David Brook is that he is a man of few words with little embellishment, so it might appear he is promoting, whereas others might jump in and provide worthwhile advice based upon their knowledge in other areas too, which as far as I can tell causes no controversy.
Paul at RFC has kindly sent me his Pluto Mk2 to evaluate and am currently doing so. Will my findings also be construed as being a shill/patsy for this cable too? I am doing it because folks have said it is a damn good cable and also to satisfy my own curiosity, given that our Jerry enthuses much about it's performance and others have also asked how does it stack up against the SLIC cable, as a benchmark to compare my findings. This is causing me far more grief than the mystery cable has because both vendors are resident here and both have commercial interest in what I type, so it is a bit like walking on eggshells. I rise to the challenge though.
Indeed, no more comments from me in this particular thread, bye bye!:)
BTW thanks to the many people who have e-mailed me privately wishing us luck with this product, thanks to you all :)
Maybe we need a reciprocal rule to go with the one preventing non-trade posters criticising products in trade threads, whereby trade posters are prevented from commenting on their own products in non-trade threads (other than to correct factual errors).
That does assume that thee are some members who are too dumb to see sales patter for what it is and I dislike making rules so that everything is brought down to the lowest common denominator where it is assumed that everyone is a gullible fool who needs to be protected however it would put an end to the tedious accusations of self-promotion so should perhaps be considered.
On another point you cannot justify a very high price by saying that there are cable that are priced even higher (Nordost Odin at £15K was mentioned) there is no logic whatsoever in that argument.
On another point you cannot justify a very high price by saying that there are cable that are priced even higher (Nordost Odin at £15K was mentioned) there is no logic whatsoever in that argument.
Yes there is some logic there Martin.
I only used the ODIN figure to put the argument into context because as distasteful as the subject obviously is, the SLIC isn't the most expensive on the market, it's not too far off the average price these days in reality, so do a search on ebay for secondhand cables arranging the listing as "highest price first" and be prepared to be shocked - I was. Ebay is one of the few places where you can get a broad sample of what's available because I had a hard job doing a google search listing all cables on the market in price order. Given that in my humble opinion this particular cable would piddle all over any of them on ebay even at those secondhand prices then the SLIC price isn't as stratospheric as most of you are thinking.
The REAL underlying problem here is not the cable and it's claimed attributes, or it's actual price, it's more a case of "affordability" for most people so they wrap it in a package of disparagement. I can't afford a Ferrari but I would love to own one, but I don't criticise or abuse people who can, or show any envy because I don't have the money. I don't want one, just using another apparently irrelevant example.
If this cable only cost a fiver would there be such a furore over it? :hmm:
Frank
I don't think anyone is criticising the price because they can't afford them. I could afford them but I am still critical of the price because you have to balance the benefit against the cost. Audio cables in general will make either no difference or a very small difference to the sound of a system. It is even less common that they will make an improvement to the sound and if they do make an improvement it will be subtle. In the context of my system for example (total cost under £2K) spending a grand on 2 cables to gain a subtle improvement makes little sense when that grand could be spend making a much larger improvement elsewhere.
That's is why I won't be buying them. Or trying them since if they do make an improvement I then have to talk myself out of spending that grand, an exercise that would probably fail ;)
For me the argument about cost vs selling price and the 'rip off' factor is irrelevant. I am currently wearing a T shirt that cost ten pounds and would have cost the manufacturer maybe fifty pence landed and that doesn't concern me in the slightest. I wanted it so I paid the tenner. Presumably the owners of the Nordost Odin cables used the same reasoning.

Good riposte well put Martin.
But I also suggest that is your point of view alone which I respect by the way, whereas to me that difference IS worth the expenditure, the cost of which will be mostly recouped by the big box of cables I can now sell that i have no need for. So does that make you right and me wrong, or is it more complex than that?
Move on one step more to recount Martin T's experience when I mentioned the TQ range and he says he SAVED money by moving over to that brand and I am also encouraged by the other Martin's post last night on this thread that he thought at first hearing the SLIC bests his top of the rage TQ Diamonds at less cost, so it's not all doom and gloom for everyone.
If the cable was only a fiver, there would be a bigger fuss over it, as everybody could justify the expenditure. I can afford it, but not the divorce that would follow when she found out how much I spent on a cable. Unfortunately, other priorities are on her list.
It might be the best cable in the world, and I hope it is for the people lucky enough to enjoy it.
David offered me the opportunity to listen to it in my system, but I declined as there was no way I would be buying one. May be once my deck is finished, I have upgraded my amps and speakers, bought a new car, finished the house and had a good holiday, I can contemplate some.
If they are as good as people say, one set will not be enough.
.

It is much more complex than that. You have heard the cable, you like what it does it has massively improved your enjoyment of your system. Are you really going to sacrifice that for the sake of £500 quid? To paraphrase Freewheelin' Franklin: 'A good hi-fi will get you through times of no money more than money will get you through times of bad hi-fi' :)

Love it :)
I'm not sure I understand what all the fuss is about here? Is it about the cost of the cable? I'm not personally interested in spending £500 on a metre of interconnect but in the greater scheme of things there are loads of interconnects priced significantly higher. The concept of value for money is actually a very personal subjective quality and there is no accepted norm. At the end of the day nobody is obliged to buy this cable and it's available on a try before you buy basis. I don't see the issue, if you think it is poor value don't buy it, it's as simple as that; but others may disagree, that's their right and they can spend their money as they see fit.

Superb and spot on !
I too cannot see what the fuss is about either.
Up until now you have had no other choice than to either accept what I say or reject it, because I have the cable here and I am reporting only what I am hearing.
Someone mentioned a while back that my hearing my not be be up to scratch, thinking that might sway the argument, but I thought a little while later that if my hearing was up the creek, then by heck it would take one hell of a cable to overcome any hearing disability I may have, in which case everyone who has perfect hearing would be truly knocked for six by the sound of this cable. Think about it.
Some have said "Ah well, cables only make a tiny subtle difference" and that may well be true because to be honest 99.99% of cables are flawed by their very nature of materials and construction and only some have less flaws than others in their designs, so the real differences from top to bottom are never going to be huge in any event because of those limitations. But hold on a minute, who can say with hand on heart that the same rule also applies to OTHER components in their systems and who again can say that the difference between a £5000 amplifier is 10 times better than a £500 amplifier, CD player, DAC, etc., etc., because each and every one is still bound by technological constraints? Liars, because it is simply not true. The entire world of audiophilia is rife with tiny subtleties that we sometimes pay exhorbitant prices for not much tangible gains and your are truly kidding yourself if you believe otherwise. Arguably, under the guise of "synergy" you CAN make the whole greater than the sum of it's parts, but that too can be a long and expensive road to travel down as well. Been there, done that, read the book, seen the bloody fillum too :ner:
who again can say that the difference between a £5000 amplifier is 10 times better than a £500 amplifier, CD player, DAC, etc., etc., :
Read the forums and you notice that there are a lot of people out there who assume that proposition is self-evident. It never ceases to amaze me.

My VERY first thoughts are........
VERY musical.....
and secondly
VERY smooth......
Nothing more as yet as my tube amp takes a little while to sound it's best and I also believe that cables take a little while to settle down.. and for my ears to get used to the difference... and there is certainly a difference.. !! that much I know at the moment....!!!
So..... watch this space... and I will report back a bit later on when I've 'given-it-some-stick'... ;)

Be interested to know what you make of them Nina.
I'm getting my second pair on Saturday, quite excited tohear what they're actually capable of.
Effem - I did have it turned up pretty blinking loud and it all hung together nicely. I'll comment more when its all in place.

Although probably not in the same league as the SLICS a pair of Belkin IC's I had plugged into Jerry's Tisbury when it was here could relocate it on the the rack shelf with ease with just the slightest of nudges. I found the best way to operate the controls was to place a hand on top of the Tizzie to hold it firm first otherwise I'd end up chasing it all over the shop... :D

Whether I like the SLIC cable or not is for another time once it has settled down and once I am more used to it's presentation I will be in a better position to tell you all whether I actually like it or not
However, and possibly more importantly, is how I would describe the cable. The SLIC is as "SMOOTH AS SILK".... the SLIC has absolutely NO harshness at all... it's a bit like when I went from copper over to pure silver.... there is a smoothness to the sound which is very appealing to me; it seems effortless in that respect!
Like I say this is just how I would describe the SLIC, but whether I actually like the cable or not will be revealed once I have taken a much more in depth listen to it :)

I really love these late night sessions as it makes my system work at lower levels, as not to upset my lovely neighbours ....
It also shows that the new SLIC cable to be very good at low levels...which is essential as far as i'm concerned
I would like to add the following to describe the new SLIC cable..... "emotional"... a very familiar track had me quite teary eyed...and that's not happened before...
oooo I say.... ;)
More to follow.... :)

I can often fall asleep with these late night sessions; you know how it is, nice and relaxed and quite comfortable listening to some toons... but for some reason as well as being quite relaxed I havn't fallen asleep with the SLIC in place.... they do make you want to keep listening and that's a good thing
Yeah, but the Sound Cords do that too and they only cost twenty quid

No-one will ever know - it's MYSTERIOUS!
You need to plumb it in, apparently. Once it's plumbed in, you need to burn it in, presumably with the same blowtorch you used for the plumbing-in stage. Gone are the days when you could just stick one end of the cable into your CD player and the other into your amp.

man, was certain you guys where ALL making a horrible typo until I checked out what has happened to what was the 'official' national Swiss chocolat drink !! it has been bought up and renamed by a big multinational co.
i'll need a couple of days to get over this

Nah, don't be silly the Brits did it first....or was it the Russians....or maybe it was the yanks....

There was a time indeed that you could simply stick one end of the cable into your CD player and t'other end into the amp, but one day some wag discovered that if it wasn't "plumbed in" correctly and there was even the slightest leak, all them little electrizzicals would seep out and drip onto your carpet. True :D
well, actually the english name Ovaltine is because of a 'misspelling' of the original 'Ovomaltine' around 1909... so i guess you could call it a british drink too... sorry for being slightly pedantic about this issue of national importance

that sounds really cute.. all you gotta do is hold your mug underneath the dripping end .. when the mug is full, just add some Ovamaltine and enjoy

So, is it any good?
Ovaltine? Aye. I love it. You get a real malty taste with it. Much preferred to Horlicks, which tastes rather sweet and sickly, in my experience. Then again, didn't mind the Horlicks sweets you could get one time. Wouldn't like to compare it to hot chocolate as it's many, many a moon since I've partaken of that particular beveridge.

New users can we have an update later today after you have completed some more running in?
I have a question - how does passing a low voltage signal down a cable "run it in?"
Is this not a HiFi myth?
I'm intrigued by the notion of "running a cable in", and would like to hear peoples opinion.
I'm pretty sure that it is my ear that "runs in" as I get accustomed to the new things I am hearing.
This kind of highlights the weakness of the subjective approach to hifi. The line is, if you 'hear' a difference, then there is a difference, whether this instantly manifests itself or becomes apparent only after 'burn-in', and even if there's no scientific explanation for the difference over time.
IMO any non-instant differences (leaving aside the vexed issue of whether they're actually improvements rather than just differences) are quite likely to be the result of brain/ear adjustment, but of course it's impossible to tell anyway without blind testing, and who can be arsed with that?

Horlicks sweet??? Maybe they changed the recipe, I always add about three teaspoons of sugar:eek:
Hot chocolate we have regularly as the French version is proper dark bitter stuff.

I understand people have different stances on things like cables. Some have fun swapping them. Some think their grandparents bell wire will beat Nordosts best. Some get upset about others comments. And we all repeat the same old arguments, ad nauseam on forums (not excluding myself here btw, I think I've just had enough of them personally).
Why? Noones likely to change their stance, why do we waste our breath? Are you impressed I typed this with no eyes in my skull? :stalks:

I've heard differences between cables, but they've been obvious on a first listen, not something I've had to 'listen for', or have had to await some unspecified burn-in period to expire before the differences manifested themselves.

Fair enough. Actually, I should really keep out of cable threads. Having gone the 'integrated' route, I only really need a set between my main amp and my headphone amp, and I've got several spares should I ever feel the need to experiment.

Only because it's fashionable and everyone is waiting for the inevitable fallout to happen. Bit like half a playground full of kids forming a huge circle around two boys having a scrap.
Someone posts a thread about a shiny new amp or speakers and it's ooohs and ahhhhs as far as the eye can see and a mere handful of posts, but cables (to me just another COMPONENT after all) and all the 'experts' crawl out of the woodwork with their opinions - 99% of which are entirely wrong to start with and the dumb pointless comments from people who think all cables are voodoo anyway, therfore shouldn't be posting in the thread at all if that is what they think.
It would shock the living crap out of me if there ever appeared a thread on any forum where someone said "Just bought a new cable, like it a lot", a couple of oooohs and ahhhs from like-minded people and job done. No hackles raised, no dumb comments, no irrelevant suggestions, no personal abuse, nothing, thread closed. One can only dream I spose . . . . . .

Fine, I have no problems with that at all Stephen. I wasn't getting uppity over any one person in particular, but having posted on hi-fi forums some 10 years or more and participated in countless cable threads myself, I cannot comprehend why they attract so much interest from disinterested parties and what in reality should be a dispassionate discussion of 10 posts or so maximum, why they then turn into epic sagas with people falling out and hurling insults over such a trivial matter.

Can you then imagine how I feel waiting for some feedback to appear from other folks who have had a dabble with the SLIC?

Off on a bit of a tangent, but I have problems with the word "smooth" when it comes to hifi.
A few years back someone very kindly brought round an amp for me to audition with a view to me buying it.
We started off playing with my amp hooked up, just to give the guy a feel for the sound.
After a few minutes he said "Hmm. You'll really like my amp, I think. It's so smooth."
Alarm bells immediately started to go off in my mind - yup, we plumbed his amp into the system - it was all I could do to stay awake.
No sale! :nono: :eyebrows:
Actually, it was a bit embarrassing. :o - what he thought was great, I thought was a dire backward step. :(

That guy who brought his amp round thought it greatly improved my system due to its "smoother" sound while I most certainly did not!

Sorry Frank.
I have to say that if I'd been interested in the cable I would have got it said nothing until I had had a good and proper listen and knew exactly what it did or didn't do form an opinion on its absolute worth - and then shared that.
I have to say that the whole cables buisness aggravates me - or it used to when I still cared. It's a bandwaggon that's been rolling for the last 30 years and we're now at the point where you can pay £500 - £1000 - £4000 - or whatever for one metre of cable to connect a source to an amp. If that is how people want to spend their money fair enough; it's up to them. Some don't see a problem or see why it should be questioned. For me it all comes down to the perceived notion of Value For Money. I know this is personal but for me spending such an amout on a cable just doesn't represent value for money to me. Living in the past, as I tend to do, I think of a Nad 3020 costing £69 or a Rega RB300 arm at £90 as representing vfm. You looked at it, marvelled at what it could do and then thought about the excellent price you'd got it for. There's a great sense of contentment and happiness in owning such an item. And it will sell. People will want to buy it. And not for any status reason, but for what it manages to do. To my mind, you will never get that from a cable.
In the late '70s and early '80s when I had the energy and enthusiasm I used to make my own cables, which was quite educational. I know cables can make a difference and that you don't need top-notch high-end gear in order to hear differences - just an open mind. I know you have a great deal more experience of commercial cables than I will ever have and you seem a genuine bloke. You brought everyone's attention to the Belkin speaker cables which you were enthuiastic about, as were others who then tried them when available on eBay. And I think I can understand your enthusiasm expressed. Years ago I split the crossovers on my Castle Richmonds using QED 79 Strand for the bass and some single strand 0.6 silver plated kynar insulated for the tweeter. The most obvious difference was the reduction in top-end hash resulting in instruments sounding more pure and detailed. I then tried replacing the kynar with some plain single strand enamelled copper wire. The difference was really quite bizzare. The pace of everything slowed down and instruments appeared appeared to exist in their own time and space which allowed you to hear stuff not apparent before. It really was quite bizzare. So I do know cables can make a difference, but I still can't see them as COMPONENTS. And even if I had pots of money it wouldn't go on exotically-priced cables.
Well, that's my thoughts.

I think I'm going to keep out of this whole discussion as I think it's getting too personal and a bit nasty and I don't do nasty...!!
I have shelled out nearly £500 for my own SLIC cable and I will be testing it out over my alloted 30 day trial and making my OWN mind up about it and it matters zero to me what anyone else thinks about the cable or my expenditure ;)
You never really answered my question directly when I asked you if you thought you were being played Frank.
I'm sure I did Chris
It is no surprise to me that Mr MRCU has used my original November outpourings as a testimonial because it is just that and no more in essence. I don't have a problem with that per se, because I retract nothing I have written and if you look at countless other websites there are testimonials from happy users (or otherwise) and in that instance I see nothing sinister at all or that I am being "played". Sure, the man is in business and I can't knock him for milking what I have written to sell his wares, who wouldn't to be honest if they were in business?
What has surprised me is that A) He has used my full name and B) He has added the Art of Sound Forum, which could be construed by inference maybe that I am some sort of big cheese on AOS. Far from it, I am just a member here like anyone else. A bit noisier than most maybe
So Chris, the definitive and final answer from me is NO I don't believe I am being "played" and as I have said before, if I even suspected MR MCRU was playing me I would tell him in no uncertain terms to find someone else for that. Anyway, I can assure you that I am not getting any graces and favours for writing about what I am hearing from this cable - it is genuine. By the way, I have been asked to evaluate another cable which is very popular amongst some members on this forum and am finalising the write up now. It is not Mr MCRU I might add, so are there going to be yet more inferences that I am being "played" by another dealer? I hope not.
I think I'm going to keep out of this whole discussion as I think it's getting too personal and a bit nasty and I don't do nasty...!!

Where and how do you believe that Chris? In that case every positive testimonial ever written can be construed as being "manipulatively exploited" would you not agree?
Mr MCRU is no angel, but he is no rogue either, let's be perfectly clear about that and people can interpret for themselves to what degree how angel-like or whatever that he is. From what little contact I have had with David, he is indeed a man of few words and fewer embellishments to what he does say, but what does come shining through is his genuine enthusiasm and I might add he is not alone in that particular trait, because another dealer I have had recent contact with also has deep passions for his product. In fact, I would be far more concerned if they DIDN'T have that fire in their bellies for what they do.
I think you really are over complicating what needs no complications. Man sends me cable, I like cable, I post on AoS that I like cable, people think what I write is good or they think it's crap. As far as I am aware, every member is over the age of 18 and sufficiently intelligent to make of that what they like. I force nobody to try one, people ,may not hear in their own systems with their own tastes the SAME as I hear here, but I can live with that. They no likee, they send wanky wire back, get refund. How complex is that?
I think the cynic in you is far too strong Chris and given that I have answered your query twice now, I will comment no further. In fact, it is this constant carping that is wearing me and a lot of other folks out to be honest.

I am no fool Chris and of course without any doubt Mr MCRU is making some commercial capital from it, the same as any dealer or manufacturer does from any testimonials. As I said too someone else has asked me to do an evaluation which if I am permitted to, would be happy to post my findings once more about another good cable. We can then safely assume that this second person will also gain some commercial capital from that posting too. So then what is the difference between these two scenarios we have here?
The latter has been a member on this forum for some time, he has behaved as a gentleman, his products are well regarded and well reviewed already and he has members on AoS that already own his products and hold them in esteem. Now why on earth did this person send me a cable for my evaluation when it is already well established? Answers on a postcard please because I am Donald Ducked if I know. Maybe it's because I have a keen listening ear? Maybe it's because I know what's what in the world of cables and say it like it is. I really don't know and for the moment it doesn't matter but a point to be made.
Contrast that with Mr MCRU who has picked me out of all the members (here and elsewhere) he could have picked to trial his new "wonder product" and some other products before that, which I rejected. Was it for the same reasons, that I have golden lugholes, or that I know what's what in the world of cables and say it like it is? Am I a shining light and bursting full of wisdoms on AoS? Nope, and still no wiser.
The difference is that you believe Mr MCRU occasionally steps over the bounds of acceptability in how he conducts himself on the forum and your interpretation of "enthusiasm" may not be the same as his, or mine for that matter. Well I am afraid that is not within my sphere of influence, it is for "management" to have a word in his shell-like if that is the case, if he steps over the line of "acceptability". In any event, that disgruntlement you might about Mr MCRU's behaviour should not spill over into my perception of this cable, because neither I nor this cable can be held responsible for the actions of the man himself. Sorry, but no.
