I think I'm going to keep out of this whole discussion as I think it's getting too personal and a bit nasty and I don't do nasty...!!

I have shelled out nearly £500 for my own SLIC cable and I will be testing it out over my alloted 30 day trial and making my OWN mind up about it and it matters zero to me what anyone else thinks about the cable or my expenditure ;)

Shame you feel that way as you're one of the few who actually own the cable but I understand.

I'd be interested in your thoughts. Especially as I also have Mark Grant's with WBTs. Would like to hear your take on how they compare.

PM me if you don't want to share your opinions on the thread.

I have read a lot of this thread and looked at MCRU site, but I have not seen what this cable is made of, or have I missed the point that this is a secret?
Is it copper, silver plated copper, silver, screened, un-screened, double screened? What is it's capacitance, inductance?

I have no idea at all what it's construction and materials area.

There are patents filed for both the cable itself and the formers/dies that are required to make the cable and this patent refers only to the cable itself.
https://data.epo.org/publication-server/rest/v1.0/publication-dates/20090107/patents/EP1509932NWB1/document.html

That pretty clearly shows its construction, no idea on materials but the cynic in me suspects the current one is copper with a "much improved" silver version around the corner...

It's more complex than you might think James if I read the blurb correctly, because my understanding of reading the patent is that it wasn't designed that way by any accident. What's missing from the diagrams of course is the metallurgy and gauge of wire, the dielectric used, the twists per inch/centimetre, is there any infill material, the relationship between the various wires and why they are there in the configuration they are set in. I cannot answer those questions I'm afraid  What we see there is a sample a mere few inches long and I would like to see anyone mimic that exactly to make up a 100 metre reel of it, if it's that easy judging by your comment about it's complexity :eyebrows:

It has a great sound but how it derives that is still an unknown to me.

Hi Michael
Other people have contacted me by PM about the SLIC cable and thats fine by me, no problem at all. I have reported back, via PM, to those people about my current views on the SLIC cable.. If you want Michael I can send you the exact PM that I sent to someone else on the subject.... let me know if you'd like me to do that ;)

What I will do is report back once I have decided about the SLIC cable and whether it will be a keeper or not and I will, at that point, do a comparison against my current cable ;)

I trust that will be helpful to everyone

I've never seen such a stretched out no-show fest as this. Can no-one report in simple English what they hear with this cable? I've reported on several cables in the past and I'm not a walking voodoo doll. We're now 268 posts in and I've still no clue how it sounds or compares with a well-known baseline reference. Just tell it like you hear it and we can each decide on whether it's worth pursuing.

Please bare in mind I have shelled out nearly £500 for this cable and I for one want to make sure it is better than my current cable.... ;)

With that in mind do you all want me to give you my 'initial' thoughts about the SLIC cable? This report will be EXACTLY the same as I have written to those that have contacted me via PM...

Also bare in mind that any reporting I do will bare no comparison whatsoever to my current cable, or any other cable I have tried, it will be just what I think about the SLIC cable as a cable in it's own right... I hope that makes sense

Sorry if I came across a tad brusque James but in my shoes I am sure you would be equally as frazzled as I am right now.

No it isn't deadly serious to me James, at least it wasn't to begin with but after a mountain of negative remarks being posted on the thread my humour pot is getting a bit empty now to be honest, especially so at the moment when I crave a sensible post from someone who actually has dabbled with the cable and can report their findings. Ok now this is EXACTLY the report I gave those that contacted me via PM, nothing added and nothing taken away:

"The SLIC cable arrived a couple of days ago and they are the thickest pair of interconnects I have ever seen, they really are little snakes...

I am still getting used to their presentation as it is definitely different than my Oyaide's, now that doesn't mean better or worse just different at the moment

I will keep the new SLIC cable in for a while, and only swap back to the Oyaide cable once I am sure I have a handle on the SLIC sound

The following are my initial thoughts on the new SLIC cable...this bares no comparison to my current cable just simply what I think of the SLIC as a cable in it's own right:

It is silky, what I mean by that is that it seems to have no rough edges
It is a very musical cable... it draws you into the music very easily, and it's very easy to follow a thread in the music
It's got some of the best voicing i've heard... now by that I mean that certain words, for instance the word 'heart' has a very definite ending to it... i mean the 't' is easily heard in 'hearT' when I know some cables seem to leave the 't' off and don't finish it off perfectly... god I hope that makes sense.... it's tricky to explain
There seems nothing to dislike about the cable; it does nothing offensive
It has quite an addictive sound, you can listen for hours and hours

Now do I think it is worth the asking price? at the moment I have absolutely no idea. I need to put the Oyaide cable back into the system in a while to see how it compares. I think you very quickly forget how your own cable sounds

You have nothing to loose in trying it as it's on a 30 day trial so no risk"

That is EXACTLY as I reported my thoughts to those that contacted me by PM, and I hope it helps some to get a handle on this SLIC cable

I've had a look at the patent and it isn't that difficult to interpret - I'm surprised some feel it is. Essentially it boils down to spacing the conductors or spacing twisted pairs of conductors. Not uncommonly it appears confusing because it attempts to cover a wide range of spacing options under the same umbrella. To be honest, I would be extremely surprised if prior art could not be shown for this and many 'hi-fi' cables claim unique geometries.

That pretty clearly shows its construction, no idea on materials but the cynic in me suspects the current one is copper with a "much improved" silver version around the corner...

Some years ago I had an Audioquest prototype that used a similar approach, save that the outer conductor instead of being wound was a lattice effect. Sounded alright as I remember.

I have read the patent document and seen the diagrams the same as anyone else here has, beyond that I know nothing further. I don't know what the wires are made from, I don't know what the dialectric is either, but I do know from looking at the patent wording that the twist and conductor lay is no accident, it is very precise.

Well, I was going to give you all my review (2 actually). Something with a bit of body and substance to them. Something you could really get your teeth in to. No nebulous airy-fairness leaving you in doubt. No. SOLID, DETAILED, FACTUAL IMPARTIAL INFORMATION was going to be the name of the game with my Ovaltine reviews - you deserve nothing less. I even - I even stayed up till 4 AM this morning hoping to get the drop on everyone when you were all safely tucked up in your beds. Sadly, when I came type the links and using the underline character on my mobile, all following lettering also had it. So, I was thwarted. Thwarted! So I'll have to make do with this.

Frank, looks like you're the new Number 6 and James is Number 2. He wants INFORMATION. INFORMATION. BY HOOK OR BY CROOK. And he'll get it Frank. He'll get it. Iv'e seen him operate Frank and it's not a pretty sight Frank. It's not a pretty sight. You'll crack. You'll crack in the end. So you might as well just tell him what he wants to know now. It's not me you lot should all be badgering for information, I was just sent the cables to evaluate and hear what they did, not to get the Stanley knife out and do an autopsy or relay what the designers intentions are, nor to justify in any shape or form how they should be priced for the marketplace.

I have written up all my blurb about what they sound like, so in reality that is my small task over and done with and if you need any more information you should contact the chap who is selling them because I can help you no more I'm afraid.

Tried to add to the last posting but it would't load.

What I wanted to know was if it had any effect on the likes of soundstaging and imagery. Were instruments more grounded, focused and palpable now? And if so, was there now a greater sense of architecture to the sound? Did it do anything with timing? Was there a greater sense of interplay between players? For £500 that's the sort of thing I'd be looking for.

, but of course it's impossible to tell anyway without blind testing, and who can be arsed with that?

Amen to that! Life's too short and Id rather spend the time listening to the music than working out whether I can really hear a difference. Got to be fairly obvious else it doesnt hold my interest.

Then that tiny difference might not actually be an improvement but simply a refreshing difference as the brain naturally pays more attention to something new - the new sound could be important to our survival, whilst familiar ones need to take up less processing else we'll be overwhelmed. Some with very unusual brain conditions or injuries have helped confirm this to neurologists.

Hmmm, £500.00 for a cable that takes sometime to consider and evaluate as to whether its any better than the 20-30 quid cable you already have - lets have a think

That's 8 years worth of Spotify Unlimited to discover new music, nearly 400 CDs if you went looking for the £1.27 Amazon bargains, around 20 live shows at the prices I pay, maybe 40~50 LP records, around 5 years of record store day purchasing if you don't go mad like I did, a pair of vintage Spendor or Harbeth speakers on eBay (now they will sound 'smooth' and 'silky' - whatever that is and you won't have to wait to hear the difference), some room treatment that again you will be able to hear and even measure if that's your thing, a Brio-R amplifier, two mono Bantam Golds with a Tisbury passive pre and a SLA battery, a second-hand valve amp, a Garrard 401 turntable in good nick, a trip to Paris, a long weekend flight to New York with change for a hotel and beers at O'Lunney's in Times Square (highly recommended), a new mid-priced fender guitar amp or a 1997 Fender USA California Stratocaster with case (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Fender-USA-California-Stratocaster-with-Case-/291127886148?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c8930144) and change for a few beers and a meal . . .

Hmmm, £500.00 for a cable that takes sometime to consider and evaluate as to whether its any better than the 20-30 quid cable you already have - lets have a think

That's 8 years worth of Spotify Unlimited to discover new music, nearly 400 CDs if you went looking for the £1.27 Amazon bargains, around 20 live shows at the prices I pay, maybe 40~50 LP records, around 5 years of record store day purchasing if you don't go mad like I did, a pair of vintage Spendor or Harbeth speakers on eBay (now they will sound 'smooth' and 'silky' - whatever that is and you won't have to wait to hear the difference), some room treatment that again you will be able to hear and even measure if that's your thing, a Brio-R amplifier, two mono Bantam Golds with a Tisbury passive pre and a SLA battery, a second-hand valve amp, a Garrard 401 turntable in good nick, a trip to Paris, a long weekend flight to New York with change for a hotel and beers at O'Lunney's in Times Square (highly recommended), a new mid-priced fender guitar amp or a 1997 Fender USA California Stratocaster with case (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Fender-USA-California-Stratocaster-with-Case-/291127886148?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c8930144) and change for a few beers and a meal . . .

.

Still got the tagger on it. Never been played. Don't touch it! Don't even look at it!

Good points there Tim. For £500 it should be obvious from the off that it is 'better'. My golden rule - If you find yourself pondering 'is it better?' then it isn't. Incidentally for £500 you can get a week all inclusive in Tobago, with the flights thrown in. Got to go in hurricane season though...

I have a question - how does passing a low voltage signal down a cable "run it in?"
Is this not a HiFi myth?

I'm intrigued by the notion of "running a cable in", and would like to hear peoples opinion.
I'm pretty sure that it is my ear that "runs in" as I get accustomed to the new things I am hearing.

From my experience a new pure silver interconnect can sound really awful when you first plug it in. After a few hours of use it settles down. I'm not talking here of subtle differences.

In my experience it sounds the same when you plug it in as when you take it out - as with any other interconnect.

From my experience every cable I've had seems to sound better after a week or so of use. However I'm willing to entertain the idea that nat8808 proposed that it's actually our brain that gets used to the new sound. However I've never found the difference 'tiny' with break in but quite an improvement overall. Regardless of the reason be it neurological or not I never make a decision about a cable until I've clocked up some hours on it. Just my two pence worth anyway. :)

With me, it's either a big difference (for better or worse) that I notice immediately, or no discernable difference. Which is convenient, as it enables me to return any cables that don't 'work' for me well within the trial period!

a new mid-priced fender guitar amp or a 1997 Fender USA California Stratocaster with case and change for a few beers and a meal . . .

You can buy a brand new Mex for that sort of money....

Post 6 in this thread tells it the way it is http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=86777&hilit=amxn+serial

The guitar is a collaborative effort between the Corona (USA) and Ensenada (Mexico) factories, necks and bodies being made in the USA, shipped to Mexico for finishing, then parts shipped back to the USA for final assembly.
All AMXN serial guitars carry the "Made In USA" legend.

I have a confession to make . I trust other human beings . Yes I know it's a character defect , but I made a decision years ago that I lived in a friendly universe and all human beings are inherently good . Yes I can do cynical and I'm very good at it when I want to be . I've lived long enough on this earth to see some rather nasty things , so I CAN do cynical . Just ask the wife  So we have established that I choose to see the better side of people whenever I can :) I also believe that everyones opinion is valid , even when I don't agree with them. Don't get me wrong there are times when peoples outlook is so obviously askew that I have to just walk away and let them get on with it.
I've been into hifi for over 30 years and for the most part been running round in circles , at huge expense may I add. A couple of years ago I joined this forum and learned more in that time than I had in the previous 25 years or so. My system has totally changed and I really enjoy my music . Mostly due to the advice I've received on here and other forums.
Now to this new cable we're ' not ' discussing any more . Frank tells us that this new cable is fantastic. That's Franks opinion and I believe him , until I buy one and prove this to be the case ( or not ) You see I trust Frank and value his opinion as expressed on this forum . I've benefited from Franks opinion ( forum posts ) before , so why wouldn't I believe him now. Let's get something straight here . I don't think Frank , or anyone else here for that matter , are shilling anything . I believe that they are fulfilling their obligations to the members of this forum by letting the members know about a new product . As far as that new product is concerned , I can make up my own mind about it . I've bought houses , cars and other expensive items over the years and haven't made too many mistakes :) I don't need someone here , on any other forums , or anywhere else to make up my mind for me . Anyway most things hifi have a ' money back if not happy ' guarantee so very little chance of making a mistake . Unfortunately our most expensive purchase ( buying a house ) doesn't work that way.
So back to the ' mystery cable ' we're not discussing on the ' mystery cable ' thread . I trust and value the opinion of the people who post here ( my decision remember :) ) and would appreciate it if those who have been lucky enough to be able to purchase and demo one of these cables could find the time to post their thoughts on this cable , as I would like to know more .
If SWMBO wasn't dragging me to Majorca next week ( I only go for her . Honest :eyebrows: ) I may have purchased one myself to find out if the claims are true . I can't afford it just now , so I take the second best option and log on here to see what others ( I trust ) think about this cable . Not what others , people who haven't actually heard the cable , think it might do ( or not do ) , but the opinion of actual owners of this new cable.
I look forward to ( and value ) your opinions. This is , after all , a hifi discussion forum :)

Kind thoughts Brian, thank you for that.

I have had a couple of PMs from Bev to say that she is on the whole pleased with the results thus far from the SLIC, without being definitive and conclusive about it, because she still wants to swap back and forth from her other resident cable to compare. Doing my level best not to prompt her, I have asked her to give the volume pot a good fistful to the right beyond her normal listening level and to report what she hears by doing that and also to listen to how a live audience sounds, both of these in comparison to her other cable of course. Before anyone gets all uppity about that, I have done the same on this thread openly and noted my thoughts about these same actions in my reviews, so all I am looking for is to see if others agree, fine by me if not. She has noted just like me that it's a real job switching the system off after a listening sesh :eyebrows: From what i gather, Bev isn't all that comfortable expressing herself in "audiophile" terminology, but she knows very well what she likes and doesn't like. This is coupled with a sense of fear being "attacked" on her views positive or negative on the open forum, hence why it appears she is prevaricating or not very forthcoming.

The last I heard from Martin (Realysm42) was that he only had one of the SLICs in his system and the second one is still in the postal system after receiving the "red card of death" through his letter box on Saturday. Hopefully he will get hold of it today and make some progress with his listening. Martin has said that he has cranked the volume round beyond what he would normally have and if I am correct he mirrors my findings.

Stephen (cyclopse) is still waiting for his to arrive. The easter break hasn't helped there either.

So you lot, just hold yer cactus and with a bit of luck the opinions of other folks who have a SLIC will be revealed soon.

I've always struggled with the distinction, but my understanding is that reviews go on SoG whereas discussion goes in Artists Pallete. So, suppose I'd ordered one of these mystery cables, I might announce the fact on Artists Palette, and maybe put up some brief initial thoughts ('it sounds smooth', 'I'm liking it so far'), then when the cable had bedded in, and/or I'd got the second set in place, or whatever, I'd post a full report on my findings in SoG. At that point, I'd expect not to be challenged on my opinions/findings, whether favourable or unfavourable, given the AoS Ethos, whereas my initial thoughts might provoke discussion ('what do you mean by smooth?' 'How does the cable compare to what you were previously using'? etc.

I am not at all in lower spirits and I did like your post #36, because to me it was a refreshing change for you to be realistic, buoyant and positive for once. Shame that Marco saw fit to write what he did afterwards, but that had nothing to do with me.

You noticing it too Craig?

AoS was just about the only place you could discuss wanky wires intelligently in peace and harmony without a fuss, but this thread shows that there is an insidious creep away from that idyll.

Part of the problem is it appears to me that too many members here on AoS are also members of other forums and spend too much time hopping back and forth, changing like chameleons in their persona, saying one thing on here and another thing elsewhere, so the people I thought I could trust are rapidly being ticked off the list of people to converse with. I am also finding out other little undercurrents from people that I thought I had respected and trusted which now saddens me. Do I care? Nope, because I can easily sign out and not come back if that's the case and I can clearly see now why Andre gets into such a tizz over it all when people are not what they appear to be.

Let's be clear that most of this thread isn't even about the cable...

As for realysm42's comments that they were good "out of the box" this hints to me that it's a neutral cable, Tellurium Q stuff certainly isn't...!

In any case we need to come back down to earth as to what interconnects can and can't do to a system. They are like subtle filters or tone controls, might help with sibilants etc., but not "game changing", "wow my system was transformed" etc. I think if I reverted back to standard cables I might lose 5% of my overall system sound characteristics... of course that final 5% is important to me. ;)

I think it's inaccurate to talk about 'other forums' in this respect. Such forums have a habit of slamming any cable discussion as nonsense, whereas this thread hasn't sat well with people from a perceived marketing perspective with the most vocal people citing "shilling". I wouldn't go that far, I believe Frank genuinely liked the cable and doesn't have an agenda to promote David (MCRU) products, but given David's occasionally over-promotional methods (but excellent products & service might I add!) this has probably added some fuel to the fire...

If I had posted that I had found a cable that had a different mix of "sonic flavours" then I would agree with you Neil, because the overwhelming majority of cables are little more than tone controls because of their inherent flaws and it is more a case of sheer pot luck that you can find a cable with the right mixture of flaws that "synergises" with your system. That's not the way it should be.

I really wouldn't bother going through page after page after page of grief that I have got over this particular cable unless it was outstanding. Note I don't now and never have done, used the words "game changing" in my reviews about this cable. I have though said that other manufacturers should begin perspiring now because this cable offers some serious competition to their products.

I agree Neil that it is more the man than the cable that folks have problems with. But be fair, neither I nor this cable had any choice over who should be the person behind it and neither of us should be pilloried over it

My understanding through contact with one of the mods by PM is that Mr MCRU has been told to rein his "enthusiasm" in and behave and I too have advised him likewise, because people are getting the mistaken perception that I am shilling for the man when I can assure you all that is not the case. Never met or spoken to him in fact, although people have said to me that his products and service are excellent.

Frank, why wouldn't you consider this cable 'game changing'? If it has transformed your 'humble' system in the way you have previously described, they are effectively acting more like components to have that kind of effect, rather than just doing the 'tone-control' thing you mention - it would be fair to call that game-changing wouldn't it?

No, because that is the very term that Mr MCRU used to describe the cable, so it would not be my words or wording, even though I did state that the cable has transformed my system's sound. I take that stance because firstly, someone recently used words that I have not said and used them out of context and secondly, if I repeated anything that Mr MCRU has said then the cynics form incorrect conclusions over my usage of the same words. What a tragic state of affairs are we coming to when people deliberately see fit to misinterpret things?

The real test is when others can say similar things that they are experiencing from first hand hearing of the cables and not just me.

Hi Frank am getting a bit confused now as in your post here: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?29207-Review-coming-soon-about-a-stunning-cable-I-am-playing-with&p=502551#post502551 you mentioned:

Agreed Gaz, but how would they find it in the first place and KNOW that it's a good cable to buy it?

You and me have both read endless threads and threads with polls on forums that 1) The hi-fi magazine audience is shrinking fast and B) An awful lot of people take little credence from magazine reviews anyway nowadays.

This used to be THE source for people to read up about the latest wonder products and if it intrigued you enough you would scuttle along to the dealers for a demo. Dealers too are rapidly shrinking in numbers as well, so where the heck will you get the info from if NOBODY is brave enough to buy new components entirely blind? Are there a host of erstwhile excellent new products out there that are well below the radar of popularity from publicity?

So, to carry that argument through to it's logical conclusion, if it wasn't me (or anyone else) that was singing this cable's praises, how would anyone know it even existed?

Its interesting with these cables, they actually sound really good out of the box, normally I feel like they (or me) need some burn in time.

I collected my second pair today and couldn't resist having a quick go with them at lunch time. I'll get some thoughts written up later.

Very interested to hear your thoughts on your two Slics in combination.

Agreed Frank, too many people happy to shoot the messenger.
Its £500 for a bit of wire, which is VERY salty in anyone's language.
In my experience a "bit of wire" CAN substantially change the sound (and enjoyment) of your system so these things are worth exploring and not be written off without actually hearing it.

If it were my product and I was confident it was good I'd trust people to hear what I hear, get a few loan units out there and see how things go.
The minute you try to hoodwink folk and your caught, that's when it goes bad.
And shit sticks.

Have to admit, a £500 interconnect is a big ask for most folk, and diminishing returns may kick in, but in certain systems to certain people it might be the thing that makes it all come together.

You need to try it in your own system using your own ears.
This hobby is completely subjective but can cost £££'s, but good guys like Dave Brook, Paul at RFC, Keith at Purite Audio and others (as opposed to the old dealer network) are what we need to evaluate if it works for us.

Can I say something Frank? 95% of the time I'm an unusually tolerant and somewhat placid individual. Really. Honestly. Life for me is varying shades of grey rather than black or white. I can also see both sides of an argument. Early on in the thread Mr MCRU commented and on the one hand I thought it really wasn't the place for him to do so - but then again ( and being generous) I thought it could be seen as him wanting to share his enthusiasm, as you youself had.

What somewhat aggitated me (for some reason) was the one or two word blanket descriptions, which to my mind served no-one any good. That's not an attack on anyone. It's just how I saw it. I wanted to know what was so special about it to warrant the asking price. It didn't look like that was going to happen and so I responded as I did.

Mr MCRU seems to like to offer offers. Why does he not do a one-off simple 60 day moneyback offer on the cable for say 10 members who each put in their £50 and who each have a few days to try it out before posting it on. There will 10 peoples' views and it will ony have cost them the price of postage if none want to buy it.

I'm sorry, but the question of value-for-money cannot be escaped from, and I just don't see how it can be seen to offer it.

An idea: why not put your source and amp back-to-back and fabricate short leads. You should get away with say 4". Surely 4" of whatever you want to try will be less of a hindrance than a metre of exotica.

Have to say I've not really thought of cables as the equivalent of tone controls. I'd say their effect is somewhat more complex. I once made some interconnects and the overriding effect they had was to give an obvious sense of grip and control. I was rather surprised by it. A secondary effect was a sense of honing and paring down of the sound in general. When I've experimented with cables it's always been the small-scale stuff where differences have been the most noticable.

How on earth can you say that without actually trying the cable for yourself??..... I didn't want to get involved with the discussion of this thread but sorry you are talking totally out of kilter if you haven't actually tried the SLIC cable for yourself

That's about as strong a response as I'll ever give as you all know I'm trying to keep out of all this silly discussion.. I for one have shelled out the money to try this cable and just because some of you haven't does not mean the cable is crap or bad value for money now does it?? If you think that then you are blinkered in your thoughts

I haven't 100% decided on keeping the cable as I've not yet swapped back my current cable to make sure what I am hearing but at least I was prepared to 'give it a go' unlike most of you on this thread :D

It's really VERY EASY for me to say that it does not represent VFM. For ME £500 is a LOT OF MONEY. It represents 1/26th of my annual income. And so, I don't need to hear it to be able to say as such. For ME that amount would be better spent on a digital room treatment set-up - or in a non-hi-fi context, sponsering a young 'un in the third world.

I promise I will try to do my comparison report in the next couple of days with the SLIC against my present cable, but my current thoughts about the SLIC cable are:

I am finding it extremely difficult to switch the toons off; I just keep grabbing cd after cd, some I forgot I had, and keep on playing them

Now whether this is the new SLIC cable making the difference or just how I am at the moment I just don't know yet

However whatever the reason I am currently listening to loads of toons and enjoying it very much indeed

Please don't attack me for my comments, and remember they are just that.. They are neither recommending the SLIC or dissing it ..... i'm just saying it as it is at the moment with my music enjoyment as it is at the moment ok..... :D

I have a hunch that the SLIC may well be adding to my enjoyment of my toons at the moment but until I've swapped back to the previous cable I can't be 100% sure on that...

I will soon report my final descision about the newfangled SLIC cable

VALUE = QUALITY / PRICE

The above is a marketing maxim but also holds true whatever your spending ability. Only you can know whether you can afford an item depending on the range of values you can withstand.
There is also another rough rule to be observed: cable spend should be proportionate to the equipment - up to the limit where you can hear no further gains.

With these in mind, everyone can make their own minds up - once they have listened so that they have assessed the QUALITY aspect of the equation.

Put said cable next to a £500 amp or a £500 pair of speakers - and I'll tell you which one would represent VFM to MY mind.

Value for money is different things to different people. The average judge for VFM for many audiophiles is about some kind of arbitrary value rating compared to other costs and sonic improvements, so loose in definition that Martin Collom's scoring system is positively accurate and factual in comparison..

Thing is, if you don't spend full wack on produdcts anyway like me - cos I buy secondhand gear normally at least 15 years old - then that VFM judgement is meaningless. In that world, good things and bad things can cost exactly the same money - what matters more is how much others want that thing, how much it's been hyped etc.

How does, for example the cable VFM compare to say a Bushmaster II VFM judgment or VFM judgment of some excellent speakers for £15,000 compared to clones which sound equally amazing but built for £2000 by a DIYer?

For me, VFM judgement is all about material cost. Discoveries of good sound made at a low cost should be passed on and so make good sound cheaper for all if good sound for all is your aim - it's called technological progress in the bigger scheme of things. You can still make profits in that. Some however will see good sound with cheaper manufacturing costs as an opportunity for making loads more profit instead, because of the amount they know some people will pay for that sonic improvement.

Really depends how each person judges value in this field.. But then again value needn't include financial value at all

Rare for me I know, but I looked at the question of "directionality" from a logical standpoint.

If a cable is directional, there would have to be an obscure "diode effect" going on which means that if it is fed with an AC signal, one half of the waveform would be shagged (subjective mode=ON) so even then, no matter WHICH way round the cable was it would still sound 'orrible. As the LCR parameters clearly tells us, there are no "diode effects" latent in any cable - at least none that known science is aware of. In other words, I can't be arsed to fuss over such notion and dismiss it accordingly.

And for me it begs the question why do they put arrows on? They will know there is no directionality so surely they are creating a deception? And if that is one deception/known untruth the cable vending crew create what others.

Better not get too logical eh?

There are some people who still subscribe to the idea that arrows on cables are important though and they insist on having them. Ask any cable vendor who is contacted about arrows on cables and the lack thereof. The directional thing was conjured up many moons ago by some crackpot reviewer who had obviously been on the old "home brew" during a review and it has stuck ever since. What we really need is another stone cold sober review that formally says "Directionality is a myth" and we can all get back to the important things instead.

No Kevin, the signal is always alternating current which means it is flowing both ways down the cable.

The once instance which directionality is important, is when an additional outer shield/screen is grounded at one end only - usually the source end, or a twisted pair conductor configuration with an outer screen. The reason the arrows are there in that instance is because the entire cable is wrapped in sleeving so you cannot physically see the terminations.

I have noticed minute differences from doing that in the past Martin, but can we attribute that to the cable forming it's own direction path over time through usage, or is it simply the scrape of the unplug/plug action cleaning the contacts? I suppose to test for that you could then reverse the other cable as well, and put the first cable back to the original direction and listen again.

Some screen-connected-at-both-ends cables do sound directional WHEN NEW, but I have enough properly designed cables which don't and that's just how I like it. The signal is certainly travelling down a cable from one end to another. Give 'em a fair amount of use and it doesn't seem to matter so much for some reason..

Obviously because the electrons gain a better sense of direction over time. When the cables's new, they need the arrows so they know which direction to go in.

Okay here goes.

First of all, think I should explain the principles behind my systems build quickly (they might sound like common sense or foo, depending on where you stand) and why these cables appealed to me:

1. I've found with experimenting, that removing vibration from all components as much as possible has helped, probably mostly so from my speakers and the valves in my DAC.

2. Removing noise from the electricity and signal at every point has helped lower the noise floor of my system to a significant degree (mains conditioner, power amp with linear PSU, PC with no moving parts and linear PSU, passive tvc line stage, filtered USB via ifi with lin... You get the idea)

The cables I've used in my system have usually been tq (most recently black diamond RCA's). My first experience of this company was its ultra black speaker cable, which I still use and they initially interested me with their phase distortion combating idea. Now is it marketing bs, or is there something to it? I've always liked what I've heard.

So it was with some curiosity I heard about Dave's new cable and (based on previous experience) the idea of noise being removed from the signal, I was intrigued so I thought I'd check them out.

I've put some hours on them now (as previously mentioned they sounded good out of the box, something I've not really experienced with any cable before) but these are still initial impressions, they might transform in time (my passive pre really came into its own at about the 300 hour mark!).

Starting at the top, treble is very clean and articulate but not bright at all. High hats and cymbals in Jo bonamassa's Man of many words are crisp, with a clear definition.

In the mids, I've listened to lots of vocal stuff, Kathryn Williams voice in Crown Electric album is sweet and a really nice earthy undertone has been revealed, it's fleshed her out nicely. Stringed instruments and horn in Christoph Bergs Paraphrases sound fantastic (this is a great album, check it out if you like newer classical music). It sounds nuanced and natural, everything has its own space to work in.

Bass is interesting because its different presentation than what I've grown accustomed to. Its very tight, articulate and deep; it's very good. I listen to a lot of Jungle / Drum and Bass, some guys go real low with their production and I really like what I get with these cables.

Sound staging is bigger than what I'm used to and when the recording is right, you get good horizontal placement with realistic heights of singers.

One thing that really struck me with these cables aren't necessarily new details I've got from lowering the noise floor in my system, but the new nuances I've got (microdynamics?) on what I've always known was there, which I really like (inflections in a singers voice for example). Checking out my favourite recordings made me smile as you're bought a little nearer to the event.

They seem to sound quieter than any other cable in my system; I don't mean they're not dynamic because they don't seem to have changed from my other cable (which I would rate as very good) but as Frank said, I've noticed I listen to everything usually about 25% louder (at least) and can turn my system up louder than I ever have done before without feeling uncomfortable, which is really good fun. I suppose it's like doing 120 in an older car compared to something much newer, they can both do it, but it's a lot more comfortable in the newer.

Final point, they are extremely neutral sounding and coherent - music flows through effortlessly, never sound congested or strained and no part of the frequency range is highlighted to my ears.

I hope this review conveys my happiness with the product without sounding too preachy/shilley; I'm at a point where I can't improve my system without considerable outlay/moving sideways instead of forward, they will be replacing the Black Diamonds - for just over half the price (1k for 2, rather that 1.7k for 2) they represent very good VFM in my eyes, they are at least as good (if not better in some areas) than the TQs. Not cheap but they punch far above their weight.

In many ways it's not flowing at all! It's mainly about voltage differentials and therefore about the amount of push and pull. Then of course the signal alternates so fast (sub-bass of 40Hz is still 40 times per second) that flow over even a short amount of time would equal to zero on average. There is always a very slow electron flow but it's not really part of the signal as such.

Im kind of winging it here so please correct me if Im wrong anyone.

Thank you for your thoughts on the cable Martin, which pretty much mirrors my own findings.

Given that the peeps on here rate the SLIC as "just another cable" or yet another flavour of the month which will be here today and gone tomorrow, it's a shame that there is such a loud roar of silence from all the people baying for more than one report about how the cable performs, even when someone like yourself posts their findings. If it was "just another cable" then I would suggest there would be some stiff competition put up from the TQ Black Diamonds, which are no slouch in performance terms either, so your decision to replace the TQ's with the SLICS is testimony enough that we are talking about a rather special cable. If it wasn't, I sure as heck wouldn't be owning one as little else has wowed me to such a high degree from the instant I first heard it and still giving me many pleasant surprises.

Let's see if this evenings sessions move some of those trialling SLIC to post their opinions. I may not be in the market to buy but I am curious what people find.

I am guessing here, but I think Mr MCRU was getting just as frustrated as the rest of us are with the lack of reporting back from people other than myself and jumped the gun - as he so often does I'm afraid.

I think that Chris's response in post #407 was the right thing to do in this instance.

Quite

That was the second trader disregard of conditions placed/asked of them yesterday.

I was wondering last night - my CD player -> amp IC is 30 cm long on the principle that as little as possible is best and least likely to affect signals. This SLIC is sold as 1m but for the same price one can buy 0.5 m I wonder what justification there can be for the same price for less? Pay more for more I agree especially if the cable has high production costs but same for less. I wouldn't want to buy more than I needed to do the job, at these heady costs I would have like a more customisable service rather than thats the product take it or leave it having a laugh.

It does seem strange that the price is the same for any length at or below 1m, but it increases for longer lengths.
Logically it should be £50 less for a half metre pair as the 1.5m pair is £50 more. Maybe that's an error on the MCRU website?
Or maybe just a marketing decision to discourage having to make up fiddly small lengths?

For the cost involved I would expect a more customer focused attitude.

0.5 m is hardley fiddley unless one is very ham fisted and in which case one would not me messing up such an expensive product. If it were 0.25m long (or my 0.3m) maybe, just maybe.

Sorry excusing them is not appreciated. As I said the shorter the cable length the less chance it has to mess up/degrade your signal. I'll get Mr Kenny on to you lot - he is a great advocate of minimal interconnection.

As the man himself is not permitted to post in this thread to answer that question, I took the liberty of sending him an email asking the same question because to be honest I was also puzzling over why a shorter length still costs the same as the full 1 metre does

The reply I have got back says that is a labour intensive business building a SLIC interconnect and it takes just as much time to build a 1 metre as it would take to build a cable of any shorter length. The length of time spent on building a cable greater than 1 metre is just the same, but of course more materials is being used in a longer length cable.

Don't shoot me, I am only the messenger :guns:

Bang.

Begs a question is Mr MCRU making these up himself or reselling SLIC's efforts?

I guess whoever it is has too much business to care about being logical and credible. Whilst a 1m cable might be more resaleable (would one ever want to sell one?) I wouldn't want acres of cable to make tidy behind my kit when I can buy something just as enjoyable after the novelty has worn off/burned in.

Thanks for asking Frank

Edit: I don't see why he cannot make factual/informational posts surely it is the advertising promotional stuff that he must avoid. Perhaps that distinction is something he cannot make or control himself over.

My understanding (If I am correct) is that Mr MCRU does the cable builds himself, as in fitting the plugs and whatnot to make the finished product. He then runs them on the "cooker" for a while prior to dispatch, hence why I believe people like Stephen have had to wait a while.

I can understand your bemusement and frustration of not being able to buy a custom length at the price you wish to pay, but I have no say in that whatsoever. If you or anyone else is GENUINELY interested in the cable, then my best advice is to discuss it with Mr MCRU directly.

With regards to your "EDIT:" Alan, I think it's a case of the distinctions between factual and promotional being a bit blurred at times for either party.

This is my own cable being cooked on the machine before being sent. It was my recommendation that all cables were put on the machine prior to dispatch because the prototype cable sounded different to the pre-production one I was sent. I discovered that the prototype had some running hours on it and the later one didn't. I also think this is why Martin's cables sounded the way they did fresh out of the box as he points out in his review.

Obviously because the electrons gain a better sense of direction over time. When the cables's new, they need the arrows so they know which direction to go in.

Backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards - that's all the little electron probability clouds do with an AC signal. (It's all quantum, you know). Over a quite short distance, too!

Still, I guess they need to know the direction they should start with. Backwards and forwards, or forwards and backwards? It makes all the difference. ;)

Odin is the topmost cable in Nordost's range with a frightening price tag. I didn't buy it I hasten to add (I'm not that rich LOL) but acquired it in a swap deal. True to the rest of the Nordost family it has a shyness to recreate accurate bass which I find odd to say the least. Top end is crisp and clear mind.

Hi everyone,

Fresh out of the listening session. Boy this little snake is good. Been into audio for 30 years so I have well trained ears.

Audiophile friend comments. Yes its a very musical cable. Its well balanced across the whole frequency spectrum.

Time after time material I know well would reveal something new in the mix. Yes the bass is better than Valhalla more of it and tighter. Yes you can pick something in the mix and follow it through the track. As Frank says it does all frequencies exceedingly well and not having any weak areas.

Its early days yet but I haven't come across such an improvement and from a wire.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Stephen

What kind of magnitude differences are we talking here? Like moving from a mid range integrated from the 90s to a proper audiophile system? Or something more subtle like changing CD transport or changing volume pot?

'I was blown away' = 'It was slightly better'

'Game-changing' = 'slightly better'

'Jaw-dropping' = 'slightly better'

'Even my wife, who doesn't normally notice these things, was impressed' = 'She said it was slightly better, just to humour me'

'It trounced the <whatever>' = 'It was slightly better than the <whatever>'

Had a faulty one once. Never got it to work.

"It was like BEING THERE" = I HAVE been certified Dellusional.

The benefits of this cable, and any other, should be able to be heard when used between a cd and recorder of some type, cassette/md, and the effects recorded.

Improvements I tend to note are nearly always by "A factor of wadds".

Well all those responses and craig's wife's one too are all pretty good!

So I guess this mystery cable has a new strap line! (David are you reading this?)

Can any of the SLIC users tell me about the RCA connectors? I gather they use the KLE Innovations Harmony RCA Plugs.

How do they grip the socket? Do they lock in any way? Good solid contact or fairly loose fitting?

I don't know about KLE but they are based on the older Eichmann Bullet plugs (the KLE person invented them, probably lost the exclusive rights somewhere along the line) - on the whole I find the Eichmann Bullet plugs to be a nice tight fit but due to having a lot less metal involved (the contact area is deliberately small) they remove and connect easily, unlike some horribly tight RCAs.

I imagine that the price of these super-dooper interconnects will go up when the all silver KLE plugs come out and are used instead?

Best described as a "firm" fit so you don't have to push and shove to get them in, nor are they sloppy like a willy in a Wellington boot. A perfect fit in fact.

....

Final point, they are extremely neutral sounding and coherent - music flows through effortlessly, never sound congested or strained and no part of the frequency range is highlighted to my ears.
........

Good to read a second opinion to Franks. Given that you have spent £1000 for these 2 cables and would only give your findings when both were in place which boxes were connected by them?

If I were to become amazed by them then £2000 would be required to transform all analogue connections before the amp and that is almost as much as my DAC. The cost of just one would be more than all the cables currently in my system put together. No matter what the performance is for others who have tried them that cost is one I would not enter into lightly.

Enjoy Australia.

Thanks Alan.

I connected my dac to my pre, and then pre to power amp. I only use a single source (PC). I appreciate the cost isn't a minor consideration for you, needing 4 for a full loom. If you are interested would it be possible to place on where every source/component would run through it (perhaps pre to power).

When I had one slic in and one tq in, it still improved the sound, albeit not as fully as a full loom.

From what I am reading on the forum, this thread is being termed a "soap opera" or "divisive" and various other insidious snide remarks, so it's time for me to leave it entirely and the forum too for that matter, because I cannot stand the schoolboys sniggering behind the bike sheds mentality. I truly am disappointed that there are so many closed minds on here from people I thought were far better than that.

This cable is all that I have said about it and more, so if you all want to carry on using your coloured and flawed cables I couldn't care less to be honest, because I am enjoying superb sounds here while I read the crap you lot write about it - NEVER HAVING HEARD IT. Calling me a shill and patsy merely serves you show that is just about as "open" as your minds really are. Other independent people are starting to say exactly the same complimentary comments about what they hear from this cable, but does that make any difference at all? No, it turns into a sort of "shill conspiracy" in your minds. Pathetic.

It will no doubt gain it's own popularity and momentum anyway without me saying another word and I hope it does acquire a well deserved reputation for being a damn good cable in it's own right.

Yes it's a £500 cable, but more expensive exist. What's the problem with the cost?
If you can afford it, go for it. If you can't, then there are plenty if other cables out there.
At this moment in time, I can't justify that amount of cash on a cable. Too many other priorities in life, but when I can I will take the opportunity to listen to it, or the next best cable that comes along. Cables and theories evolve. Totally agree Jerry and Frank anything negative I have posted is most certainly not directed towards your good-self, I enjoy reading your posts immensely. My distaste is about the manipulation of people for profit and nothing to do with the cable itself - people can buy and do what they like, but if they 'appear' to have been manipulated, then you are clearly going to get divided opinions on an open forum. Even if everything is above board, not everyone will see it that way.

We can't all agree about everything, but we should be allowed to voice an opinion shouldn't we?

Well, this is an assumption that is easily made I suppose but I’m not sure its a proven fact. In any case, the question as to why cable threads arouse such feelings seems to relate to the evangelistic tone as much as anything else.

Those of us who are just a little cynical (thats me) about the whole thing, are accused of being deaf or that our systems are obviously not ‘high resolution’ enough for the obvious differences to show and the hackles rise. The sensible thing to do is stay out of the thread of course, but hey, we are only human and its our ‘subjective’ view that some let their enthusiasm carry them away.

Forums are about discussion after all and if it was only the believers who join in, where is the discussion?

Some of us have been through this sort of stuff many times over many years, see the ‘obvious’ ways to improve our systems come and go and just sit back and enjoy the show. Caveat emptor obviously applies to all things but I do think that the odd still small voice saying ‘take care not get carried away’ has a part to play.

Effem is, I feel, allowing things posted elsewhere to reinforce his feelings of being attacked. The anti posts here seem to me to be pretty lightweight and generally, in good humour. If he feels that strongly about it, fine, bog off and stop enjoying what is, in general, a fun place to inhabit. Otherwise, man up and accept that life doesn’t always offer sweetness and light and you may find you still have some relevant input to make here and there.

I appreciate that I am someone who ‘flounced off; from elsewhere because the tone finally wore me down so if that point has been reached, goodbye and good luck.

PS Just realised I didn't quote from Jerry's last post.

I generally try and avoid cable discussions now. I have a firm set of beliefs with regards cables. I think these could be easily found on AOS if someone chose to search. Nowadays I keep my gob firmly shut. I only make comments with regards cables that I *think* have made a positive impact in my system, or I will generally comment on cables if I feel another user has had similar experiences to myself with a specific cable. This is hopefully to help others make a decision about a cable. I have a view point that if many people hear and describe similar things and characteristics in a cable then its *probably* correct. At the end of the day, it is only a cable!

I don't agree with the shilling accusations made here and 'elsewhere' - anyone is free to discuss what's good or bad about something they have bought. It does not mean that they are somehow pressured into doing so by some evil marketeer.

That seems really unfair to me. He wasn't egging people on to be complimentary about it but rather to make some sort of comment as the thread was desending into pointlessness. The thread was after all about the cable yet after 40 or so pages seemed to have very little user opinion on the product.

I generally agree with your views Jerry but you could not be more wrong if you tried mate.

A "cunning marketeer"? Do me a favour!

Which "cunning marketeer" would barge into threads like this and post the inappropriate utter tosh that Mr MCRU does?

Which "cunning marketeer" would shoot THEMSELVES in the foot by having on the same page of his website statements like "Possibly the best interconnects on the planet" and "The MCRU Ultimate Interconnect" as well as the new wonder cable? It's obvious to me for sure that Mr MCRU hasn't ANY marketing skills as his strong points.

There is NO "cunning marketeer" about the man except for innate enthusiasm fuelled by sheer naivety, plus a heady mix of not knowing when to keep his trap shut.

I make no attempt to defend the man in any way shape or form, I am just putting into focus what you are all interpreting as FACT, wrapped in mythology.

Even so, what gives any of you the right to undermine me and my perceptions of this cable because you feel that Mr MCRU isn't quite "playing cricket" by the forum rules? There is a very good mod team on here that is perfectly capable of putting the man right for his misdeeds and me too if it comes to that. I have had one PM from a mod who expressed his concerns that I was being used or manipulated, which I put my own response to. There are others that are "playing cricket" on the surface but underneath that is far from the truth. "What the eye does not see . . . . . . . . "

I have also said before quite clearly that it is neither mine nor the cable's fault who the sole vendor of the cable happens to be and any issues you may have with that person should not spill over into my perceptions of the cable. That is what is making me so angry, is that you lot cannot do a simple task like that and bury your prejudices for once.

I am not flouncing off in a huff either, because I have had fearsome ding dongs on forums for more years than I would wish for, much much more heated than this ever has been, but this is the first time I have been hurt by prejudice, rumour, misinformation and someone else's "crimes".

BUT:
I have never accused, implied or had privately held views that Frank is doing such a thing, only that his goodwill and enthusiasm have been cynically taken advantage of by someone else.

I find it sad that a good man like Frank has decided to call it a day here.
We both did the same at another forum due to similar scenarios, finding ' comfort' here at AOS.
Sadly, possibly due to other former members of that un named place coming over here, the general tone of some threads has taken on a similar character to what we tried to escape from.
Maybe it isn't like that, but nevertheless a guy whose opinion I value has seen fit to leave.
I was also accused of 'shilling' at the other place, merely because I believed a certain brand of cable was really rather good, especially at a price point way below what is being discussed here.

It was comments elsewhere on this forum that has angered me so much, from people I thought were above such childishness.

Yes those comments elsewhere also do annoy me and that is because of the gross inaccuracies and lies being perpetrated just for their "amusement" and delusional views, sadly being migrated to here as well covertly. I did actually sign up and try to convince them that they should have no concerns and their accusations of my being a shill were entirely unfounded. I might as well have tried to teach a dog turd to jump through hoops backwards, than to discuss anything reasonably and sensibly with them.
