Don't know if this is the right place to put this, but I certainly think it should be a sticky somewhere.

I'm often intrigued as to the stories behind people's user names - and there's nearly always a story behind every one.
So, why don't you tell us about the origin of the name you've chosen to be identified with on the Art of Sound?

Your enormously self-depricating starter for ten:

The Grand Wazoo - The Big Arse...............also the name of one of my favourite Frank Zappa albums.

Steve Toy

My name on my birth certificate (ok it's Steven, but Steve for short cos only folks pissed off with me call me Steven :D) minus my middle name.

I know most feel they can't be quite so up-front as is the fashion on the 'net, but we do everything here to discourage folks being totally anonymous to the point that they don't think they have to engage with others here as real human beings taking responsibility along the way for what they write.

Monikers can be creative and identify us as we mean to proceed - which is no bad thing.

I like this OP Chris. :)

Mine's from a once legendary Pink Floyd number called 'In The Beechwoods'. A few years ago now, a recording of the track appeared (sometime after I first started using the name) and I got to hear it at last! Pretty funky number in parts to be honest :)

It is not, in fact, because I'm am distantly related to famous tribe of Native American Indians.

No, it comes simply from something that friend of a friend said once which has stuck for some reason. However the explainantion as to what caused them to say it is the first place is the long(ish) story.

Several years ago when my 1st marriage ended (now considering No.3, that's and even LONGER story) when I was in my late 20's, I felt the need to get a quite sizable tattoo on my left shoulder and immediately (i.e. straight after having it done) went out for post-work beers with a mate. While at the pub, the girl who is responsible for my name spotted the fresh tattoo, asked briefly about it and that was that, except that....

She bumped into me the following week and noticed that I had another fresh tattoo on the OTHER shoulder. This cause slightly more amusement but not as much as when we ran into each other a further two weeks later and she discovered from my mate that I'd now had another huge tattoo done right across my back which joined the first two up.

It was at this point that she declaired that I was "as mad as twelve bears" and for some reason, it's stuck ever since.

i used to go under the internet name of "pissartist" when i was about 16 but at some point in time i got banned from a forum for haveing a rude word in my name
i then changed it to "redefined" partly because i had been and partly because of a song called redefine by incubus
i then joined a photography forum under that name but eventually changed it as i decided it sounded a touch pretentious under the circumstances
i was also trying to get a name for my self as a photographer and figured having my actual name "hamish gill" relating to photography in as many places as possible wouldnt be a bad thing
try searching for "hamish gil"l on google.co.uk now... the entire first page are links to something to do with me... :gig:

Whether 'Sand Dancing Donkey Walker' is a Bowdlerisation of his true username or not, reminds me of the former occupation of a fellow work collegue.

His previous work was in the poultry business, specifically he was involved in the artificial insemination of turkeys. In fact his job was to extract the source material - a sort of semen extraction facilitator. No easy task as you can imagine; turkeys are big birds and don't take kindly to enforced onanism!

This was in the days of the old black UK passport, which required a description of ones profession. I always meant to ask him if under 'Profession', he had entered 'Turkey Wanker'!

I have wondered at the exact meaning of the word "wanker", but no longer.

Hi Mazeppa

I would have questioned your misunderstanding, however I have noticed your location, so realise that 'wanker' is a unique British euphemism and as a term not necessarily known to you. Not only is it a euphemism, it is also a term of disrespect for someone who is perceived as being a bit of a 'loser'.

Clearly this has nothing to do with matters audio, but we hope that AoS as a forum educates, informs and entertains.

Back in the 70s I worked for a civil engineering company on the admin side of things. One day the (Scottish) Site Agent came in looking most perturbed. One of the foremen had occasion to tell him that a particular job was simply not feasible and he was not prepared to spend anymore time attempting to complete the task which in his opinion was just a complete waste of time and effort. So what, well this being in Liverpool the foreman didn't quite put it in those terms, what he actually said was "...you can fook that, I've seen me arse with it..." only being Scottish he was unfamiliar with the local phraseology and was visibly upset at the very thought:lol::lol:

So there... I got two first names, one of which is Alex, but that of course was taken by a few million peeps, so I extended it to Alexus (from Ms Winston see below) but that was not enough either.

Mines very boring and goes back to the time I first got 56K dialup connection. I wanted an email address with Primordialsoup which was accepted but due to a connection glitch when I tried to complete the process it then said that the name was taken. I then tried Primalsoup but the same bloody thing happened again!

Eventually I managed to get Primalsea and it stuck.

Mine is from a series of books called The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. So far 8 books written and two to go. A bit like Lord of the Rings in its setting except the main character has leprosy and is despised by people around him.
About 1.2 million words so far and I have read it three times so I must like it.

My apologies - my somewhat weird sense of humour can get me into awkward situations.

I don't have Alzheimer's - its just something of a standing joke between my wife and I - each accusing the other on a regular basis (or using it as an excuse for forgetting a birthday, anniversary, etc.)

The last series is fine-centering around Linden Avery (at least at the beginning) and the dubious return of Covenant to the Land. To say anymore might spoil things. I think it might be a couple of years before the third and forth are released.
The Gap series is excellent-some people say its too long but I enjoyed them all and am part way through the series again (I must try and read something other than science fiction/fantasy)
Didn't enjoy Mordants Dream.

My username comes from two of my favorite audio (electronics) companies: Threshold, and Spectral. IMO if somebody wants to get serious about sound on some type of budget, used high-end gear (of many diferent companies) is the way to go. I use a Spectral DMC-6 preamp, because it has the quietest phono stage that I have ever used. It is really noticeable, when you start turning the volume up, and the lower volume passages come up. It is something that they did differently in their design, but I can't remember what it was. I found a discussion about it on the net, but now I can't find it. (I'm not trying to brag or anything here) It was $2,800 new, and I got it years ago used for $1,350 U.S.D. Now when they rarely come up, they can be had for about $600-$700 U.S.D.

I use Threshold S-300 amps, because they can drive any load all day long. I also think that like so much other high end gear, they are beautiful! I have three of them, but I don't have the third hooked up yet.

Your enormously self-depricating starter for ten:

The Grand Wazoo - The Big Arse...............also the name of one of my favourite Frank Zappa albums.

The first time I've ever truly, really experienced high quality sound reproduction in my house was when I replaced my Castle Inversion speakers with a pair of Magneplanar MG1 IMP planar speakers. There was something about the music coming out of these enormously huge speakers (they look like the monoliths from the Space Odyssey 2001) that made everything sound and feel (and look) as big as a house! The drum kit suddenly appeared before me as big as the real life drum kit, and all the other instruments in the mix gained their life size dimensions. On top of that, the vocalists suddenly gained in stature, as I could plainly see Janis Joplin standing in front of me in her full 5 feet something height!

Depending on the mix/mastering, some instruments even gained larger-than-life dimensions (this is especially true with synthesized instruments). Also, the instruments were now distributed not along the boring familiar toy-sized left-to-right squishy soundstage, but were well extended up, up, almost touching the ceiling, all the way down touching the floor, and beyond the left and right edges of the speakers. Plus, they were now layered in depth, extending all the way to the back of the house (and, on a very quiet night, even beyond).

All that produced such a vivid, palpable illusion of witnessing a breathtaking music performance, that I felt as if I've been taken on a magic carpet ride. Hence my moniker:)

No significance at all. I still regularly watch the Smokey films and to be honest without Buford T. Justice they simply wouldn't be worth watching at all. Some cracking old school one liners that still make me laugh:-

Jerrykan
28-08-2010, 19:35
My name 'Jerrykan' comes from my childhood love of making models of German WWII armour. The jerrycan is the ubiquitous metal 20 litre container for fuel and water. Designed in Germany in the '30s for the Wehrmacht it is now used worldwide. A white cross painted on the side denoted it is carrying drinking water.

Jerrykan is my online gamer tag, I like shooting people with an M16 from a distance, online of course.

My interest in hi-fi started when I was about 20 and bought my first system, a JVC ghetto blaster that had a phono input for a Sony deck. When I got my first job I got a NAD 3020, a Dual 505 TT and a pair of secondhand DIY Tannoy loudspeakers ( gert big things with a 12" woofer ). I still love vinyl but find the durability of CD very useful.

My digital system now approaches that vinyl sound I love - an Audio Synthesis DAX Decade DAC, Tri-Chord modded TEAC VRDS 25 CD player / transport, a Primare SPA21 amp ( the only 5.1 amp that sounds good in 2 channel) and a pair of Usher 6371 Compass speakers.

Interconnects are a Chris Venhaus design home-brew ( I AB'd against Nordost, Chord Co and Kimber and they stand up very well ).

I like listening to modern jazz, ( ECM, Coltrane and Davis, Mehldau, Metheny ) also Four Tet, Radiohead and folksy stuff ( Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Laura Marling and Creedence Clearwater Revival ).

Looking to get another valve amp now my kids are a little older, I still make models and have my stereo on nearly all evening most evenings whilst I work on my next 'masterpiece'.

My much younger wife accepts my need for an awesome sounding rig, she also has a penchant for jazz and can hear the difference between Black Ravioli and Aurios Media Isolation Bearings, a quality I find highly attractive.

Thanks for reading this, I always like reading other people's bios, hope you liked mine.

Ok well i guess user name like many others is a bit obscure, I use it for all my user names from XBOX live to my email address, anyway it all started a few years ago.......
My girlfriend and I were into this online game, I can't remember what it was, but to regester you needed to create an I.D. and password so to start with I tried variations of my real name Mike Davis, but seen as it is as common as muck no decent name was left, but as i was on the PC I was also watching Talladega Nights a movie with will farrell, anyway i was in the midst of pissing myself laughing when a part of the film came on about them advertising different products anyway will farrell was brandishing this huge hunting knife called the Jack Hawk 9000 so i typed that in and the rest is history so they say.........

My user name is a reference to my days as an aspiring bedroom DJ:

XPHADA = CROSSFADER

The crossfader is the fader located at the very bottom of a DJ mixer.

I no longer have those DJ aspirations but I'm still an avid record collector who became a bit of an audiophile along the way.

It would also explain why I have 4 Technics turntables ('decks' in DJ-language ;)):

Hi guys,
Great to know that analogue still rocks. Simple rational behind my ID, not difficult guess to guess which is my favourite sports car....911 is a clue.

Many years ago I was a mad hifi fanatic, but somehow lost my way and sold my beloved Rega II deck in a rash moment and regretted it ever since. Imaging my surprise and absolute delight when I found a brand new, boxed SME 3009 Improved tonearm in my dads loft:). Also found a part completed Dual turntable, well I think it is. It sparked my dormant hi-fi DNA and decided to build a deck an add a analogue source back into my system, which luckely is a Quad 33 pre amp and 405 power amp. Both were serviced last month by Quad who completely overalled the electronic plus converted the speaker terminal to wired for just 100 quid. What an amazing company.

Glad to have joined a bunch of true believers.

Welcome, Steven. My mate is a 911 fan (and ex 911 racer) and a real petrolhead. He calls me a dieselhead now, but of the performance variety.

The SME 3009 was my very first proper hi-fi purchase, from Laskys. Great arm, fab build quality.

Welcome to AoS, Steven. Got a 3009 but never a 911 - at one point about 10 years ago my 4 best mates all Porkers - one had a 944 Turbo, one a late 928, another a Boxster S and the last one a 911 Carrera 4... I felt very much the poor relation at the time in my company Mondeo!

Anyway, good luck with the hifi kit, should be able to put together a great system based on what you've got I suspect. Enjoy the forum.

Awesome classic.I've had some cartridges fitted to em that were technically insaine compatibility wise but worked perfect! I loved the 3010R, i've been considering buying an old Garrard '401' with vintage SME just as an ornament, a testiment to such marvelous British engineering of years past.

I have at the same time put my integrated Audiomat Opera Signature integrated on a sound mechanics rather cheap chinese platform and the amp has relaxed a lot since then and sound far more natural and almost as detailed and fast.

Hi, handle is from an past girl friend that maintained a long distant email relationship (she was in Dubai and I was located in West Coast of Canada). Kinda stuck.

After reading many articles on this website and having a hoot watching the friendly discord take place amongst the regulars, I surmised this is the place to be for all that's right!

So, I have joined initially to garner some insight and wisdom from the inmates on a current problem, and will hopefully be able to share in what little I know or understand in the future.

Thank you,

Hi Jim,

Not sure if I have welcomed you in person, if not then I apologise.

Looks like you've got a 'handle' on what a friendly forum this is: populated by (mostly) harmless nutters who (again mostly) love to chat about music and the best means by which to hear it.
