Don't think I even heard it right but the gist was: when giving your postcode over the 'phone for example and using (or not in this case) the phonetic alphabet. A guy said 'BN..' to which the reply was 'DN'..as in Delta November? Feeling under pressure and not knowing his P Alphabet, his rushed reply was - no "BN' as in errrr Barry Noggins! This tickled me - we have all been there I think and especially as my postcode ends in JT - the tempatation to say John Thomas is very strong!! Being interested in my family history (genealogy) I decided to have my DNA tested, expecting the results to reflect the Irish lineage on my father's side. I was totally surprised when my "group" was linked to the Bosnia/Croatia area since I had no known ancestors from that region.

I emailed a fellow who's the guru of the "I" group and after he investigated my results and his database he discovered a small sub-group with Scottish and Irish roots which, in terms of genealogical age - fit between two existing but disparate groups; one in Bosnia/Croatia (Dinaric), the other in the British Isles (Isles).

He named the new group "Disles" and since I feel I was the first to ask about it; I've claimed the title of Disles1.

Kind of old-school here; when I first used the Arpanet at Tektronix in 1985, using a screen name was considered pretty uncool, the kind of thing BBS'ers and the hacker community did. So I've always posted as "lynno" - my account on the VAX 11/780 machines in Building 58 of the Beaverton Tek campus - or my real name.

The Internet retained its Arpanet character, limited to university sites and companies like Tek and Boeing, until it was opened to the public by the advent of privately owned ISP's in the early Nineties. The BBS'ers shut off their sites and poured into the rapidly growing net, taking their on-line etiquette - if I can call it that - with them. The net changed its character pretty rapidly after that, kind of like the difference between licensed ham radio operators and the CB radio crowd.

I wasn't a fan of the shift in character, and was *very* glad when moderated groups like "rec.audio.high-end" finally appeared. Man, I really date myself with that reference ... oh well.

Those were the pre-Internet days, when it was called the Arpanet. I first experienced it around 1983 or so, when I had access to the mainframe computer in Building 58 of the main Tektronix campus in Beaverton, Oregon. Tek was very large back then, with 22,000 employees, and Building 58 had two Business Units in it: the Spectrum Analyzer group, where I worked, and Television Products, across the hall.

I started as a technical writer, and we were in the word processing era, but did not use PC's. We needed access to the same machines as the engineers, since we worked in parallel on the same projects as they did, and shared documents with them on a daily basis, including e-mails. Unlike them, we needed to generate documents that could be translated into finished manuals, so we took advantage of the early typesetting tools offered by Unix. I was the writer that got our little five-person writing team on to the Emacs screen editor on the Berkeley Unix (BSD) operating system on the DEC Vax 11/780, which I quickly discovered was networked to all the other Vaxen on the Tek campus, as well as the other Tek campuses at Wilsonville and Vancouver, Washington. Better yet, if you jumped through the main machine in Building 50 (the R&D building), you could leave Tek and explore the Arpanet!

Back then, the whole thing only had about 20 nodes, mostly on the West Coast. The primary nodes were Stanford, Berkeley, the nuclear weapons lab at Lawrence Livermore (in Berkeley), Los Alamos, Tektronix in Oregon, Boeing in Washington, MIT in Boston, and a few other sites. The sites were a mix of academic, extending the scope of the Unix backbone of the system, and military and military-contractor sites, since DARPA was/is the prime advanced R&D lab for the Pentagon, and was the sponsor of the Arpanet.

There was no public access to the Arpanet, and not everyone at Tek or Boeing had access. But anyone using Unix could pretty easily get on, and we writers naturally needed access to the same tools as the engineers. So after using the system for a few months, I realized I could send an e-mail to my sister down in Berkeley, since she worked there, and had access to the main Berkeley system. It wasn't the modern e-mail system - it used the "bang" address system that required you to know the routing path for the message - and the transmission was overnight, since the computers only called each at night using very expensive leased lines through the Bell System.

Since this was a limited-access system almost entirely used by researchers and engineers, there was none of the anonymity foolishness that later developed with the public Internet. You did something stupid, and your boss would know in a matter of hours, or even minutes. The saying among the engineers was: "Never post anything you wouldn't mind showing next manager five years from now" - since there never was any way of knowing if messages were *really* deleted.

The freestanding, non-academic BBS community, running on 8086 PCs and even older C/PM Z80 machines, was completely different. These were dial-up connections to isolated BBS's that were only sometimes interconnected thanks to a maze of incompatible protocols - just getting a pair of modems to talk to each other could take an hour or more of puzzling out weird modem lingo (no standards, of course). Most BBS's were focussed on social and technical interests, but a minority became notorious for hacking tips and warez. Since I was almost entirely a mainframe user, I wasn't all that interested in PCs and older C/PM machines. (Linux didn't arrive until the Intel 386 had enough power to support Unix - that was about eight years later.)

Anyway, the habits I developed in the early Arpanet and Internet days stayed with me - keeping my posts clean, and staying as far away from the flamers as possible. Since their only intent was to destroy communication by underming social groups, as a professional writer dedicated to clear communication, I thought it was especially repellent and antisocial behavior.

It took aggressive moderation - which is very time-consuming on the part of the moderator - to keep a group clear of these thugs. With anyone able to post anything, a moderator, or even a team of moderators, could be easily overwhelmed with posts, especially when an skillful flame thread was started. ABX or cable flames was an especially fruitful area for starting arguments that would never end, which was the goal of the flamers. They did this just for kicks. And this tiny minority succeeded; one audio group after another was destroyed by a handful of anonymous sociopaths. The experienced posters would leave for good, leaving behind a small pool of novices who would be preyed on by flamers. I don't need to name names here, but experienced readers will recall the wreckage. The modern forum system, with registered users, keeps the antisocial types away, thank goodness.

The early days of the Arpanet were different; any post could be traced by the system operators (mainframes, remember, and on corporate and academic sites) and reported to the appropriate manager. Make enough offensive posts, and you'd be out the door with a can tied to your tail for the rest of your professional career. That's why folks from the Arpanet days have good posting manners - you didn't have a choice, unless you wanted to buy a $150,000 mainframe, and even that wouldn't get you access to the Arpanet. (Neither IBM or Microsoft were on the Arpanet.)

That's really fascinating, Lynn. I worked on the other side, setting up NEC's first BBS for support of our products. You're right about modem lingo, I learned a lot back then. It was satisfying writing PostScript utilities for our printers in C, posting them on the 'NEC Connection' BBS and watching hundreds of customers come online and download them. psprint.exe made a bit of a name for itself back then.

"Heroes", Side A, Track 2 - db, et al '77.

My handle tips the hat to the incomparable genius, talent and vision of the Bowie/Eno/Fripp axis ... and to the brilliantly skillful Visconti.

I've long used it; however, I've latterly noticed quite a few others do too. There seems to be a jtl fraternity, including a band. Googling turns up very interesting stuff. I'd be delighted to hear from all able to afford greater insight. I recall db's comments in one of the Bio's shed much more light - but I've long forgotten which/what ...

From what I've researched currently, however, there's no greater consideration on-line than Chris O'leary's "Pushing Ahead of the Dame" ... the best fan blog I've ever encountered ... by a very long mile. IMO some of his writing's as great as his subject.

It's a most remarkable work for posterity ... an astonishingly perceptive, exceptionally well-informed, truly enlightening, sophisticated, thoroughly enjoyable read and comprehensive mine of information and analysis. Check it out ... even if you're not a db fan.

The track itself is viewed in the context of the so-called 'Berlin Trilogy' (which never was, literally) and O'Leary's account further opened my mind to the wonderful creative processes of such extraordinary geniuses.

IMO JTL is one of db's greatest songs and performances, affording a magnificent overture to the title track; now widely acknowledged the greatest all-time db/eno et al achievement. "Heroes", Side A, is my all-time fave vinyl HiFi experience, very closely followed by "Scary Monsters", Side 2, which kicks off with the heart-rending "Teenage Wildlife" in which IMO Fripp makes his most inspired contribution ever. These works also showcase the pinnacle of analogue recording and production.

Probably my favourite stroke of production genius is the JTL interlude:

For years I've failed to get anywhere near reproducing the effect of those near-spoken words being projected from nowhere, with such stunning emotive impact.

I'd be interested in threads founded in such as this if there's any interest out there.

I guess it's just because I can't be doing with ambiguity. An awful lot of people seem to assume that you know what they mean when they say something. I usually find that, when you actually get to the root of what somebody says, it is far removed from the original comment.

The opening post on this thread for example. At first glance it seemed that it was from somebody called The Great Wazoo to somebody called Sticky, enquiring as to the origin of his username...I formed my own conclusion and passed by the thread.

I now realise that a 'Sticky' must be some sort of displayed notice that are pinned, or simply stuck onto notice boards.:)

Chose my name when I joined a forum for the first time back in '99. Twas a computer forum and I was having trouble installing a new motherboard and understanding the RAID setup. Received good advice and needed forum name.

Being a fan of the good Captain and seeing two computer references in the name I chose, that's the one I went with and it's been me ever since. Sometimes regret the choice, it seems silly to serious folk, but I guess that's who I am.

I did my first piece at the age of 13 in some underpass and the age of 16 starting using the name of "Lacey" - i'll use Lacey or Lace'd Taste on various forums now. Had a good run and had a few articles in the local papers before police came over whilst me mum was having a party (not the best of memories), Lacey became legal and i ended up studying fine art at Uni. 'The Diceman' is an all time classic, there's nothing else quite like it. I still have a couple of copies knocking about. An absolutely essential read if you've not heard of it!!!



By the way, I always feel sorry for people sucked in by the VW camper thing. It's all about image (not one I'd want. 'Fake Cool? Not for me) and generally the people who buy them don't have a clue that the poor old things have the dynamics of a shed. Unless you spend a fortune, it'll be desperately slow, full of rust and handle (wrong word) like an overloaded pram!

Whilst not being a VW man i am a fan of the Austin Minis and whilst it might not be the most practical of cars generally full of rust and i'd probably spend the rest of my days doing it up i think there's still that appeal to own something iconic/fun without going down the whole "look at how retro and different i am" route.

I'm not sure I agree with you entirely Geoff - I think for some people, yes it fits into an image to which they aspire to, whatever that is ... But for others, who might have lived through the era, it may bring back good memories, and they really don't care about all the performance stuff - they'll see all that as part of the 'charm' ...

I recently replaced a fairly new bike with a bright yellow 70's BSA racing bike in a fit of vintage lust - technically it may be wanting on many fronts compared to bikes today, but I actually find its 5 gears better than the 21 I had before and I just love riding it! It makes me feel good. :)

I agree on the seventies (and earlier) racing bikes, they're great to ride, so light too. I always get rid of the drop bars though and fit flats.

Oh, and I grew up with Campers and other old VWs, nobody thought they had any particular image back then. The 'Lads' all wanted Transits!

I had thirteen BL Minis of all types. Many were well tuned too (by me) and there's no job I've not done on a Mini. I've replaced engines, gearboxes, wiring looms, floors, door skins, roof linings, subframes, etc., etc. Done several engine rebuilds and resprays. Those were the days. Still got a fully equipped workshop though.

Don't know how this will go down in the forums but as a kid i loved bubble writing and quickly got into letter forms and then eventually "graffiti." I did my first piece at the age of 13 in some underpass and the age of 16 starting using the name of "Lacey" - i'll use Lacey or Lace'd Taste on various forums now. Had a good run and had a few articles in the local papers before police came over whilst me mum was having a party (not the best of memories), Lacey became legal and i ended up studying fine art at Uni. I'll post some examples scattered around my home town of Barnstaple.
