View Full Version : Tablet PC woes . . . .
My missus has a Prestigio tablet with Jellybean 4 on it.
Today it is having a right old wobbler saying endlessly that this that and the other app has stopped working. In the meanwhile it is trying to download apps that she hasn't even asked for like Lego Star Wars. I can just about get into the settings page to look at what's running but soon after it just locks up. Tried poking the reset button but when it fire up again it starts the stream of stopped working app messages all over again - back to square one.
She lurks a lot on Facebook despite my dire warnings about picking up computing diseases on places like that :steam:
Had a look on t'internet for info to get it into SAFE MODE but pressing the power button and the POWER OFF option on screen doesn't put it into safe mode either, so I can't then delete the apps one by one until it stops this nonsense.
I am loathe to attempt a factory reset because she has a lot of sentimental photos on it and I recall the grief I got when I did a format on her old desktop PC :eek: Does anyone think though that a factory reset will get rid of this problem?

The first thing to establish is whether the photos etc. are backed up. It's very hard getting out of a situation like this if you are hampered by the worry of losing data.
If you can Frank, install an app called Advanced Mobile Care. It is a cracking, easy to use utility which shuts down stuff that shouldn't be running in the background and then sweeps the system to get rid of any nasties. Believe me mate it just works. It's free too ;)

I would be truly surprised if any of the photos are backed up. It doesn't help when the tablet doesn't have an SD card slot either and I think it is the Achilles Heel of these devices when there is total reliance on the internet for interfacing with no means of "manually" adding to or subtracting data as you can with a desktop.
If the photos are lost then so be it, because it's pretty useless in the state that it's currently in, so the question still remains if I do resort to a hard factory reset will it also clear out this nasty gremlin it has acquired?

I wish I could Dave, it would solve a lot of problems. It is a frenetic flurry of messages and downloading activity from boot up, then I have around 20 seconds of access before it locks up completely :rolleyes:

Can you ssh in to it and retrieve the photos to remote location that way? Generally it much easier to admin these sort of devices remotely.

I found an SD card well and truly hidden away round the back. Took it out and put it into my tablet but it said the available space on it was the same as was still free and I couldn't view any pictures on it at all.
So, with my wife's blessings I did a hard factory reset and the nasty virus has now been cleared.
Put the SD card back into her tablet again and the pictures are all there.
Massive sigh of relief here :eyebrows:
Do yourself a favour and download that app I recommended Frank, it will keep the gremlins at bay. We use it on our phones here and the Windows version, Advanced System Care, is installed on all the Windows PC's in the house. I've been using it and its associate suite of utilities for years to very good effect ;)

I don't think 'turning it off and turning it back on again' (or a close approximation of) will ever be beaten as a problem solving tool for IT issues!
Glad to hear you've got it sorted. Make sure you back up those pictures right now...
Nice one. Now set her up with off-tablet backup, either cloud or to USB.
Well I have now downloaded and installed Advanced Mobile Care onto it, so thanks Dave.
I have also transferred all her photos onto a CD ROM so they are stored away safely.
Had time to do it too as some silly old sod fell down the garden steps earlier today and done something nasty to my ankle :rolleyes:
Phew! Nice save. I wish more domestic consumers would give a little more consideration to what happens to their 'priceless' photos when their device fails.
They do say that everyone learns to back up their data the hard way. Fortunately, I don't have any data to back up.

I don't have a tablet, but I rather like using as small a hard drive as I can conveniently get away with (Win 7 Pro/64 bit on an 80Gb drive) on my PC, as I keep virtually no permanent files and need little spare space over what is taken up by the O/S and a few useful applications/programs. So I don't have much to back-up either. I have plug in drives if I need off PC storage.
At least you have a system, Geoff. When I'm approached by friends to fix their crashed/dead/broken device and they give me a blank look when I ask them if they've backed it up, I despair.

How long can it take to burn off a few DVD/CDs to save important stuff on?
