This is a copy of an email I just sent to my car insurance company and the name has been disguised to protect the guilty:

I am truly disgusted with Ch*****ll.

I rang on Tuesday the 27th in the morning to arrange cover for a car I was about to purchase. I was told the call centre was "too busy" to deal with me and they would call me back at 8.00pm. That call never happened, but it's not the end of the world.

Wednesday morning I rang again and this time I did manage to arrange cover for the new car, but I forgot to ask about a Certificate of Insurance so I could tax the car as it runs out on the 31st August.

Thursday morning I rang to ask for proof of insurance so I could tax the car and was told I could either have an "acknowledgement of cover" at no cost, or if I paid £9.56 I could have a copy of the Certificate faxed to me. I don't have a fax machine (who does these days?) but luckily my previous employer does, but that meant a 35 mile round trip for me just for that purpose. I made the journey at 3.00pm only to find no fax, which meant I had to ring again. I received the fax around 20 minutes later.

The "acknowledgement of cover" is utterly useless for car tax purposes and it doesn't help when Churchill print very clearly on the page in big letters that it isn't suitable for taxing a car, so my journey was a complete waste of my time and money.

The core of my complaint therefore is that I am deeply offended and upset that my insurer will happily ask for £9.56 for a copy of a document I am entitled to have because I pay a premium already for it and see no reason to pay yet again, when Ch*****ll know full well I MUST have it by law to tax a car. Given that it took no more time/effort/money to fax a useless document than it would have done for the correct document, I find it bizarre that Ch*****ll could even remotely justify asking £9.56 except for lining it's own pockets and profiteering when in a position to do so.

I was hoping that the post this morning would have the Certificate so I could tax the car today, but nothing came in the post either so after today I cannot use the car. Thanks, Ch*****ll.

I was in two minds whether to take my business elsewhere and after this treatment I will certainly do so come renewal time.

Disgusted,

Etc.

Car insurers appear to be a law unto themselves, the only slight advantage that my company has is that I have online access to my documents which means that the certificate is viewable and printable within 24 hours, provided of course the operator presses the right buttons!!!!

But get this, my car has manufacturer metallic mica paint, I was told by different people at the insurer that because this isn't a flat colour it is classed as a modification, that is despite leaving the factory this way. My insurance documents apparently have to show the car as being resprayed, why, it has never seen a bodyshop, despite protestations they say it is the only way they can cover this manufacturer colour, suffice to say I will not renew with this company.

I had heard that most insurance companies now make your policy available to download online but I had to pick the shower of shit that don't do that for their customers :steam:

You appeared to slip with the name in one of your middle paragraphs :eyebrows: but I think most people could have worked it out.

I used to use a broker over in King's Lynn called Adrian Flux. He always came up with a competitive quote and when I had to make a claim couldn't have been more helpful.
You don't always have to use the big guns....

Bloody insurance companies, when I renewed my insurance recently the quote I received was for £470 which was nearly £200 more than I'd paid the year before... Using tinternet, I put all of my details into the same company's system and low and behold, it comes back in £250 cheaper than the quote I had received in the post! they're all con-artists as far as I am concerned!

So much for those nodding dog adverts. Always viewed them as a cheapo cheapskate insurance brand.

They are probably trying to recoup the squillions they have paid Dawn French to do their silly adverts ...

Another vote for Adrian Flux. They specialise in insuring classic, modified and kit cars. My daughter's boyfriend has recently finished a five-year restoration of a Mk1 Toyota MR2, and wanted to tax and insure it. He called Adrian Flux, and was able to print off the certificate of insurance within an hour. The cost to insure a 25year old fully comp on a 1600cc 120bhp mid-engine two seater with no no-claims bonus (it's a second car)?

£160!

Pretty good, I thought, especially since he's paying twice that for a beat-up old Citroen Xsara with a major on-line insurance company.

All insurance companies are little more than con artists in my opinion. The company I had house and contents cover with for several years (name has two syllables; first syllable - a place of worship, second - a small mountain) sent me a renewal notice with a large price-hike over last year‘s premium. I have ten+ years without a claim and hadn't added anything to the cover, so I called them to ask why. I was told that it was standard practice to quote an inflated renewal price which would be lowered if the customer queried it and was then offered renewal at a similar price to last year.

I told them to shove it as I don't give my business to fraudsters.

You can only do that when the V5 has your name and address on it, registered with the DVLA
