No predictions.
Our new manager has promised fast flowing, attacking football, and that's what I believe he'll deliver.
And with Jesus in our side, what can I say :eyebrows:

I think very hard to predict The 3 top teams have all undergone radical changes and still not sure who is leaving and joining I think it be pretty tight and think Arsenal and Liverpool both have a decent chance of doing a lot better this season

1st.Man City
2nd.Chelsea
3rd.Man United
4th.Arsenal
5th.Liverpool or 6th
6th.Totenham or 5th
I'm a liverpool fan.
1. Chelsea
2. Man Utd
3. Man City
4. Liverpool
5. Arsenal
6. Tottenham
I predict that this season will be Wenger's last at Arsenal, and will follow Alex Ferguson out the door next year when the season ends. He's been at Arsenal WAY too long already! The club needs some fresh young blood.
I think that the biggest improved team this year, in the top half of the table, will be Liverpool. They've always been my second team (after Celtic) and I'd love them to slowly return to their glory days! :)

Interesting that you think a 4th spot is attainable for liverpool.I almost put them there, but have been a bit more realistic! Alot depends on who we bring in and if suarez stays (highly unlikely).
I've been impressed with what Brendan has done so far, especially after a dodgy start to last season.Actually looking forward to next season, which is something i've not done for a few years
Yup, totally agree on all points, especially the Suarez situation. However, I think that Brendan has the midas touch and my gut feeling says that he'll take Liverpool into 4th position. It's time the 'pool slowly got back to where they belong, Darren! :exactly:
I have very fond memories of Liverpool, from the 70s and 80s, dominating football all over Europe.... ;)

I think a few more decent buys like Sturridge and Coutinho and winning a few more games against the 'big' teams and we will be alot closer this season to getting a 4th spot.We just need consistency which has been lacking for years for one reason or another. At times we played teams completly off the pitch, then at other times you are just shaking your head the whole game
Anyway,Italy vs Japan is on,so i'm off to watch that.

I don't think United will find as easy as last season, but i still put them as favourites to retain the title. Certainly going to be more interesting this season.

Talking of decent buys, I think Kolo Touré will prove to be a good one for Liverpool.
He barely put a foot wrong for us last season on the occasions when he actually made the starting lineup.
I have been very impressed by the solidity of his performances, and he's going to prove himself capable of doing the business.
I just hope that he doesn't come back to hurt us (City, that is) :eyebrows:
Man U
Man c
Chelsea
Spurs
Italy were extremely lucky.
Japan were fantastic.
I got a few friends who are Arsenal fans Most would like to see Wenger move upwards, but as a outsider I think the club are only a few players short of challenging. The defence was the best last season something I was surprised about so I think its about scoring more goals so improving attack and midfield
I do believe Liverpool has a good manager it will just depend how well they do in the market
I always thought City would find hard last year but see them being more fresh. City always look good when they are more attacking so think they stand a real chance
Jose will make Chelsea a lot stronger they probably lose some of that flair but will be more consistent
Utd will be as strong as always but its going to be a difficult job replacing Ferguson
Spurs will challenge for 4th place
as a liverpool fan , i feel suarez has let the club down big time.:(
i wish the club had the balls to make him sit out the last 3 years of his contract on the bench.
possibly one of the worlds most talented players, but to use a "talksport" phrase, his "heads gone".

I don't give Man U much of a chance this year. Moyes replaced the whole of the backroom team with that from Everton. That means that the successful training methods that have stood the test of time have now been reduced to that of a 6th spot premier league position.
Mourinho doesn't need Rooney. He can get along just fine without that baggage. So I suspect that he is once again playing his mind games.
As for Suarez: let's not forget that Kenny lost his job primarily for backing Suarez. It was not such a welcome hit with the big boys at Liverpool when Kenny stood by his player. So am a bit surprised that Rodgers should try to pretend that Suarez should show loyalty to the club.
But Bale might turn out to be the talk of the town if he decides to pick the € over the £. It has been a very rocky road for high flying and gifted British players switching to the continent. Few have succeeded, and a lot more have failed. Alarmingly so even. And joining a team full of superstars will more than likely make him a bench filler.

agreed, in the prime of his life , terrible for his family
The Canaries are going to kick ass next year (maybe... ;)) I wasn't sure about Houghton to start with, but some canny transfers IMO - Hooper (sorry Marco...) and van Wolfswinkel bring some much needed fire-power, and Fer will cause problems - we've bolstered our defence too, and I genuinely think we will be up there with the "best of the rest" this season, looking to improve on last year's 11th place - and (please God!) not being involved in the relegation scrum at the end of the season...

Having watched all of the pre season "friendly" matches City have played so far I am quite optimistic about the incoming season.
The pre season has been good from our perspective.
We've Arsenal next weekend in Helsinki, and then it's the start of the (Premier League) season.
Monday 19th (and Newcastle Utd.) can't come quick enough for me :eyebrows:
as a liverpool fan, my biggest fear this season is not losing suarez.
if we fail to make a considerable challenge on the top four this season we may lose Coutinho next summer.
my guess is he will turn into a much better player than suarez and almost certainly much less baggage.
we should only sell suarez abroad, unless a prem team offers a "Bale" level price.
i would much rather see suarez leave than the possiblity of Agger leaving for Barca , as rumours suggest.
one thing is certain, if we constantly sell our best players we will never move to the next level.
have read a lot of criticism of the owners recently too as they dont appear to be throwing money about.
my view is, they wiped out the club debt and fans would do well to remember that.
BR also gets criticised, but i feel he deserves 2 more seasons before he can be fairly judged.
still looking forward to the new season :) up the reds

Well, it's only a tenner, but you're completely right of course - especially on my team, and with odds of 250/1 it would seem the bookies don't share my optimism for the season ahead!

Probably not unfortunately - family life doesn't allow much time for frivolities such as a a 500 mile round trip and a whole day out to watch your football team get tonked! ;) The only possibility would be if I could fit it in with a work trip to our Stockport or Manchester Office - worth a thought.

Our draw brought us Bayern Munich again
Then there's the little matter of CSKA Moscow, and FC Viktoria Plzeň.
Ours is not the "Group of Death" we've had for the last couple of seasons, but there's plenty of scope for a banana skin or three :eyebrows:
I'm pretty certain that City will qualify from that group, most likely just behind Bayern.
However, there's every chance that they'll top the group. I've got a good feeling that you guys will do well in Europe this year, as Pellegrini will be very clued up on the European scene, and I think his tactics are well-suited to the Champion's League :)
What do you make of the fact that Celtic had to play THREE bloody qualifying rounds, despite reaching the last 16 last season? It's a fooking disgrace!

I hope so, 'cos we made heavy work of Hull yesterday.
All credit to Steve Bruce and his team; they had obviously spent a big part of the week studying the way Cardiff played against us last week, and used the lessons learned.
If they had any players worthy of being called a striker they could easily have been 2 up by half time.
Our defence was all over the place too - both Lescott and Nastassic really need to follow the lead of a tactically superior centre back (Kompany).
We could also do with a midfield enforcer, just like we had with De Jong

Which idiot let Daniel Sturridge leave Manchester City for Chelsea? (Hint - it wasn't Mancini ;))
Thankfully the transfer season has closed City learnt from the mistakes last year and done their dealings early, Tottenham has totally restructured and perhaps we see them on a late run or challenging next year. Utd has not really strengthened in my view and I think City and Chelsea should have enough depth to challenge them. Arsenal got a good player in Ozil but needed a striker and perhaps cover in defence. nI think Liverpool has also done some good dealings and might challenge for 4th place

Roberto was undermined by the club, as some of the ensuing staff position placements show.
City didn't make any mistakes last year - the early lack of activity in the transfer markets was deliberate.
I'm pleased that we signed a well seasoned centre back - we looked woefully inadequate at the back over the last couple of games.
Yes agree about your defence but think the team will get stronger over the course of the season your attacking intent looks very positive.
If the lack of early transfer was deliberate then it backfired for City; it was always going to be hard retaining the title but still think this year its between you and Chelsea

Definitely agree on that front. Fellaini is a good signing for Man U, but I think they needed more.
From the beginning of the thread:
1. Chelsea
2. Man Utd
3. Man City
4. Liverpool

I'm glad that Liverpool are currently living up to my expectations! I'm sure that this will continue, although they'll have to start scoring more goals. I predict that within the next three years, they'll be genuine contenders for the title - as long as they keep Brendan Rogers!
From what I've seen so far, I'm happy to stick with my top 6 prediction, although City could take second place.

I'm not so sure about that.It would make more sense to keep him to the end of the season and sell him after the world cup, when he would potentially be worth more! Also if we have a good run in the league and are looking at a champ league place then his thinking may change!
Real Madrid didn't put a bid in for him, only Arsenal did and they have bought Ozil and are not likely to pay £50m+? for Suarez as well.
That's what i think anyway!

We were very unlucky against Milan, and should've had a draw. It's just so difficult for Celtic, playing away from home in the Champions League, stepping up from SPL level. However, at home, with 65,000 fans behind us, we can (and indeed have) beat anyone!

Great win for city today , are utd on a slide ? Maybe but I won't write them off .
Hi Chris,
Not so much a slide, I don't think; they're more in a transitional period, as Moyes doesn't yet know his best team. He'll definitely get there, as I rate him highly as a manager, but I'd bet money on Man Utd not winning the title this season, simply because they're in that transitional period.
Yup, great win for City. They need more consistency in the league, though, which I'm sure will come. Arsenal are surprising me this season and showing the form that they're capable of for the first time in years! Could Wenger have a surprise up his sleeve before he goes next season (which I suspect will happen?) - I think so :)
Also, I'm starting to like the look of Man City, the more I see of them. They have some real quality throughout their team. Furthermore, I don't think it will be Mourinho's year either, in terms of the league. I think Chelsea's main successes this year will come in the Champions League and in the domestic cups.
Accordingly, I'm going to revise my top six predictions, as follows:
1. Man City
2. Arsenal
3. Chelsea
4. Man Utd
5. Liverpool
6. Tottenham (with Everton possibly level on points in 7th place, but with a poorer goal difference than Spurs).
That's it now! Those predictions will remain until the end of the season
Marco.
You might be right about the 1 to 4, but Liverpool is to dependent on individual players performing; I do not see them as more than 6-7 and Tottenham can take the 5 position. Spurs made good use of their Bale money.
And congratulations to Man City, not only for beating United but they actually won a European game!!! the real test in Bayern is waiting.
And finally, it was also a good week for the mighty swans; 3 matches in 7 days; 2 away wins and a Draw at home versus Liverpool... not to shabby
Liverpool looked awful yesterday as they did in the 2nd half against Swansea.

Cheeky bugger.
It's not the first European game that we've won - if you remember we had 10 points in the group stage of our first season of Champions League football.
You don't get 10 points from a lucky bag.
In our first season of Champions League football we won the home game against Bayern 2-0.
We were unfortunate not to go through to the knockout stages because 10 points normally sees you through (ask Utd - 10 points has scraped them through many a time).
The win against United was good today because they were comprehensively outplayed.
The only time I had any concerns about them scoring was late on in the game, after all our substitutions had been done. I still struggle to fathom out what Garcia brings to City other than a nice smile and a load of playing liabilities.
Negredo was a beast - he certainly put Vidic in his place :eyebrows:
Credit where it's due - Rooney's goal was well taken, even if the offence the free kick was given for was a bit soft.
That's 12th man Webb for you ;)

I think that Villa at home this season will be a handful for anyone. Lambert is now got something good going on there, so don't be surprised if they claim more 'big scalps' at home. As for shocks, what about Man Yoo losing 1-2 to the Baggies at home?

I don't give Man U much of a chance this year. Moyes replaced the whole of the backroom team with that from Everton. That means that the successful training methods that have stood the test of time have now been reduced to that of a 6th spot premier league position.
It's quite sad in a way to see my prediction taking shape. Moyes has overestimated his ability and that of his back room staff. He'll have to abandon his Everton training methods and find new coaches who are far better than the ones he has shown blind faith in. Otherwise he won't make it past Christmas as a Man United manager
Hi Stan,
They've had a rather tough start to the season, no doubt, but there's no way that Moyes will be sacked unless Man Utd are in danger of being relegated!
Ferguson was apparently heavily involved in the appointment of Moyes, and so I believe that the club very much see him as the man to take them forward from this point onwards, and he will be given time to get it right, just like Sir Alex Ferguson was all those years ago, after a similarly shakey start - and the rest, as they say, is history... ;)

I hear you Marco, but you are being overoptimistic in this case. ManU only seems to have a good game when Robin Van Persie is on the pitch. That's not a good sign for a world class football team. The players are not being managed properly if winning games relies on the initiative of just one player.
Moyes is in danger if Man U do not finish in the top four this season

What a result! I was completely not expecting that.
I was listening to some of the match on the radio, and from what I was hearing the first half should have seen the game dead and buried in City's favour.
Seeing the highlights on MoTD the first Villa goal was offside, I've got no complaints about the second, and the third ...
Excellent result for West Brom too - to pull off a win at The Swamp takes some determination.
I see Moyes has been criticising his players in public - Ferguson never did that.
And I don't think Moyes will convince the dressing room that he's capable of taking the team forward as long as he does criticize his team in public.
If Moyes loses the dressing room then he'll be gone before you know it ;)

Hi Chris,
Your point is well-observed and valid. However, I don't see Moyes going anywhere this season, and I would take bets on that! Quite simply, this is the wrong time for anyone to conclusively judge his abilities. Next year is when that should be done, when he's had a proper chance to stamp his authority on the team.
Moyes is here for the long haul, and the club (and eventually, the players) will back him. Historically, most football clubs struggle for a year or so after the loss of very successful and iconic managers. Let's face it, the task of following Alex Ferguson was always going to be monumental, no matter who it was in the 'hot seat'...
During this transitional period, Moyes will make mistakes, and it will take time for him to mould the team into the shape that he wants, but I firmly believe that during that time he will get more right than he does wrong - and it is that which will act as the catalyst for the future success he will no doubt bring to Utd.
Understandably though, as a City fan, you'll look at things somewhat differently and want him to fall flat on his arse... ;)

I got plenty of mileage out of last week's derby game :D
The board over at The Swamp won't give him enough rope to hang the club with, unfortunately :eyebrows:
His first task should be to look at his older players - Ferdinand shouldn't be allowed on the field, and was well and truly wrong footed in the second of The Baggies goals.
Ferdinand was once a decent player, but he's turned into a big liability who is quick to blame others for his own short comings.
Rooney actually seems to be turning in decent performances, which is one problem off Moyes plate.
WBA goals were very good.
Utd's defence looked awful.
If the other teams play as well as they should i expect utd to be found out this season.
They have a few decent players but to many average ones.
I got plenty of mileage out of last week's derby game :D
I bet you did. It was a well-deserved win, although it won't always be like that. However, you should also be concerned at your own team's lack of consistency. Winning 4-1 against your old rivals is not much good if you follow that up by losing the following week against Villa... That is not the mark of champions.
However, for me, it'll still either be Arsenal or you guys that will eventually win the league.
The board over at The Swamp won't give him enough rope to hang the club with, unfortunately :eyebrows:
I very much doubt it will come to that, as I believe that the board (and don't forget Ferguson's 'behind the scenes' influence in all of this), are in it for the long haul. It would be ludicrous, and totally counterproductive, for anything else to be the case.

I agree. On current form, Rooney is looking like a genuine world class player, which coincidentally is great news for England. Moyes needs to surround him with others of equal quality who can fully exploit his abilities. He must also get the most out of Van Persie - another world class player, who I don't feel is 'right' at the moment, along with Fellaini, who hasn't yet shown anything like the form he did at Everton.

Bayern played us off the park for sure.
It's nothing to panic about - it was only the second group stage game, there's another four to go yet.
Pellegrini out?
It's way too early to say yet - you should get a job writing drivel for the papers Stan :eyebrows:
Yup, that was a sore one to take, Chris! I still predict that City will qualify from the group.
We were (once again) very unlucky - this time against Barca
Thing is, I knew when the draw was made that Celtic would struggle to qualify from their group, quite simply because the influential players we sold in the summer (Wanyama and Hooper) haven't been replaced yet. By that I don't meant those who've come in as replacements aren't good enough, but rather they've not yet 'come up to speed', and so the Champions' League group stages have come too early for us this year.
Next year, however, with the newcomers having had a full season behind them (and no doubt with further new additions to the team), I would expect Celtic to do rather better. At this level, there's a very fine line between being able to do what is necessary to win a match, and fully deserving to win (or at least draw), in terms of chances and possession, but not quite having the ability to get over the final hurdle, which is sadly the tale of our two opening games...
We still have a chance, of course, of qualifying from the group stages this season, but it all hinges on the remaining games with Milan and Ajax, as I can't see us taking anything from the game against Barca, in the Nou Camp.
What we need is for Barca to run away with first spot, leaving us to fight it out with Milan and Ajax for second place. Realistically though, I can't see us doing it, and predict third spot and a place in the Europa League, where I feel we could put together a decent run... :)

I don't like Hart's tendency to parry the ball away from goal when he should be catching the ball, but the goals from Ribery and Robben would have been difficult for just about any keeper I can think of to stop.
Muller's goal was down to a defensive lapse not of Hart's making.

Agreed, although watch Artur Boric in goal for Southampton this season. We had him at Celtic a few years ago, and on form, he's unquestionably the best shot-stopping goalkeeper I've ever seen! It's only a matter of time before one of the 'big boys' come in for him... :)

Pretty good - he's a great all-rounder and (apart from shot-stopping) is particularly good at organising his defence, who usually play with great confidence in front of him, knowing that he is behind! ;)
He's a rather imposing figure in goal, too: a huge guy.

His first team debut was in the FA Cup match against Watford - He came on around 10 minutes from full time and scored, ably assisted by Mario Balotelli.
It was Mario's last game for us, and Marcos had just turned 17. He became City's youngest ever goalscorer that afternoon.
Since then I've seen him playing a few times with EDS (City's under 19s), and he gained his first senior team start at the League Cup match versus Wigan a couple of days after the derby match.

It was a tough game today, and thankfully there's an international break, coz Vinnie Kompany picked up what looked like a hamstring injury
Everton pressed from kickoff, which is something I expected them to do, and came close to scoring at the start of the game.
Thankfully Joe Hart read things properly and managed to grab and smother the ball.
First blood was to Everton, with them beating the offside trap with a long ball over the top, and some individual brilliance from Lukaku.
A minute later City had levelled, and truthfully never looked like losing their grip for the rest of the game.

You have got a better view than the referee on certain incidents, I'll give you that. I've been to games where I've been in the wrong place and wondered why a player has been sent off.
The referee doesn't have your advantage, so always bear that in mind.
Also bear in mind that a slow motion replay is not the best way to view incidents - it's too easy to read intent on the faces of players where none exists.
On player's contributions to a game it's not always easy to see their contribution when it's put out on TV - Milner is one of those players.
You need to be at a decent vantage point to pick up a lot of his movement off the ball.
I don't ever read anything into the coverage on MoTD - truth is it's good for goals and sod all else!
I know you're not, Chris, but I was also pleased to see Man Utd win, which will ease the pressure a little on Moyes. That Januzaj boy looks a bit special!

Now he is with ManU it is striking how Arsenal has improved, whilst ManU has dropped back alarmingly so. Robin is scoring the goals as he did at Arsenal. But the reversal in fortunes between his previous and current team can no longer be ignored.

WRT van Persie - I wouldn't think that he is bad for any team he plays for, but his pay packet might causejealousy, and, who knows, maybe he has an attitude that splits teams apart.
If you look in the past Moyes has usually had a issues with his teams starting slowly
At this stage you cannot write off Utd however if their run continues for a 3 to 4 more games I think they be to far behind Aresnal City and Chelsea to challenge for the title and will have to compete hard with Liverpool and Spurs for fourth place.

It should have been a draw. Arsenal lost a bit of concentration just at an crucial time of the game. With their manager not in the dugout the German side managed to keep up the pressure for their second goal. Tactically that says a lot about the way Dortmund must have prepared for the game.

I can't believe that Hart not playing on Wednesday night has caused such ludicrous comments from the press.
They're a major reason why so many England sides wobble and fall in international tournaments, and as such they should fuck off until they learn to get behind the national team.
I may or may not see the BBC with egg on its face tomorrow afternoon.
To be truthful I don't care.
The only problem is that if they're wrong they're not big enough to do what they should be doing, and getting behind national team players instead of getting at them.

Either City were amazingly good or Norwich were exceedingly poor, and I as a City supporter think it's the latter.
City played well, but were nothing special.
Your "assessment" about improved confidence at the back is completely wide of the mark. We could have played Pantilimon's grandmother and come out with the same result.
Unfortunately you will not get a fair assessment of the game from MoTD, so just enjoy the goals - the first one is the flukiest goal I've seen scored in a while.
Taken me this long to read this thread!
Thankfully we bounced back nicely yesterday, be interesting to see for how long. Even the most optimistic Canaries fan wouldn't have expected much from Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City games in a row - just important we beat those teams around us I guess - but after the investment and decent players brought in I was expecting a brighter start to the season!

... after the investment and decent players brought in I was expecting a brighter start to the season ...
I'm bemused by City's mixed league fortunes - at home we're unbeaten, but away ...
Today we missed David Silva big style.
Can't knock Sunderland for their determination and resilience, that's for sure.
Brilliant win today for Man Utd! :yay: Conversely, a shocking result for City... :(
Oh ye who had little faith earlier (talking bollarkz about Moyes being sacked, etc)!! :mental: Trust me, Utd will be there or thereabouts (in terms of the title race) at the end of the season - and Moyes will be their (successful) manager for MANY years to come.....
BUT - look at fooking Southampton!!! Who'd have predicted they'd be where they are now - even at this relatively early stage of the season?? It's not a fluke either. Whilst I don't see them finishing in the top six, I'm confident that they will achieve their highest ever finish in the league this season.
The magic ingredient is the 'Boric factor'... There are of course other reasons for Southampton's success so far, but as I've always said, he's an outstanding goalkeeper, and is the rock upon which the foundations have been built, which have created the team's great results so far this season.
Most of my early predictions are going to plan, including the success this season of Liverpool, who I'm convinced will be playing Champion's League football next year. Their success so far is definitely not a flash in the pan. The only thing I'm a little surprised about is the topsy-turvy league form of Man City. However, that's most likely connected with the demands of the Champions League, where (as predicted), they're doing rather well.
If or when they go out of that competition, I fully expect their league form to be much more consistent and see them really start to challenge at the top.
Marco.

BUT - look at fooking Southampton!!!
APPARENTLY in Portsmouth these are known as ScumHampton..... no idea why....
The season is pretty open at the top this year I am enjoying that it looks unlikely no one will walk away with it
Considering their recent form I thought Arsenals performance against Man United on Sunday was a little lacklustre, which I found disappointing as a fan. Southampton are playing very attractive football at the moment and they are a joy to watch. Newcastle's Tim Krul was man of the weekend in my opinion, he couldn't have done a better job denying Spurs if he'd been big enough to fill the entire goal mouth... :D

What a game.
Ten minutes in I thought we were in for a drubbing - 2-0 down at Bayern Munich.
Final score City won 3 goals to 2.
We leave with honour restored, matching Bayern with 15 points.
They won the group on goal difference.
It's a good night to be a City supporter :D
That's a very impressive result, Chris, so you must be well chuffed! :)
Remember what I said about Man City in Europe this year...? ;)
Trouble is, the longer you remain in the Champions League, the longer it'll take you to stamp your authority on the Premiership........ We've still to see the best of City, in terms of their league form - of that I am certain!

Too right - I'm delighted! :yay:
If they can manage to keep their key players injury free, I see Liverpool now as genuine title contenders (replacing Man Utd in the hunt, as this season is very much a transitional one for Moyes). However, Liverpool have slowly been building up thus momentum for a while, and are now reaping the rewards of the hard work they've put in during previous seasons under Brendan Rogers.
Yes, The Reds are now back with a bang, to where they deserve to be! :)
The title is a four-horse race, for sure (although in reality the winners will either be Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City).... I'm sticking with my original prediction, and still expect Arsenal to sneak it in the end (as a farewell present to the fans from Wenger), but watch out for a big push by City, once they're out of the Champions League (that is if they don't win it), as on form, they are unquestionably the best team in the Premiership.
Marco.

He's only been there since 2012 - this is his second season :ner:
TBH I'm pleased that they've started to come good - I'm sick to the back teeth of teams just turning up at The Etihad and not putting in a decent effort against us.
Thankfully Liverpool have not been one of those teams, but their recent good form ups the ante quite a bit.
The Boxing Day fixture is shaping up to be a good one (17:30 KO, BT Sport1).
Soz, I thought that Brendan had also been in charge there the season before... In that case, what he's achieved in such a short time is even more remarkable!
I agree - I think that the Premiership is all the better with the addition of an in-form Liverpool team :)
It'll be interesting to see what they can do in the Champions League next season, as I'm almost certain that's where they're heading.

i do not see us as title contenders this season, but we are gonna compete for a top 4 spot.
i still think we need another good striker, 2 is not enough.
jury is still out on joe allen too, so maybe a midfielder.
i would still take Alonso back, but cannot see it happening.
i do not see us as title contenders this season, but we are gonna compete for a top 4 spot.
Well, Simon, I know where you're coming from, but in my view any team that is two points off of the top of the league, coming up to Xmas, are title contenders... ;)
I suspect that some would still consider Man Utd as title contenders, and look where they are, compared with Liverpool.
I simply don't believe that Liverpool's current form is a 'flash in the pan'. If they keep it up until the end of the season (as I fully expect them to), then they will be there or thereabouts, in terms of top place. Come the end of the season I honestly can't see there being much in it between the top four (and Liverpool will be in that group) - it's gonna be a tight one this year :)
I know you might not agree, but it's good to see Everton doing well, too! They're also fortunate in having a top-class manager who knows exactly what he's doing.

Gerrards not that old yet. Look at giggs. And liverpool have managed some big results with him. The final score probably owed something to the red card and some seriously dropped Tottenham heads. But Liverpool have strength in depth this year for the first season in 5 years we can replace players all over the park, including strikers. And whilst we don't have 2 first class internationals for every position like city, the team works as a team and new players fit in and gel. Premiership contenders? Sure. Favourites? Not with this bookmaker. Champions league? More likely than not :)
Liverpool have to hope suarez stays or does not get injured or there hope of top 4 will be gone.

Clearly Suarez is very special and very important. But Liverpool are not in the "One player" situation they were before Torrez went. They have Sturridge, Moses, and several "striker" midfield players, and would have buckets to spend (£100 million?) on a new striker. "Biter" was out of the early season campaign, and Liverpool started well. Chelsea are in with a shout - what's so good this season is there is nobody running away with it.
Have to disagree.
Take suarez out and Liverpool will be about 5th or 6th.

only got to see the highlights on motd, based on that we deserved a point.
BR was obviously unhappy at some decisions and voiced his opinion (of which he is entitled to do), but for me he should have shrugged it off and said these decisions even out over a season.
a lack of composure in front of goal is what really cost us the game, IMO. (and of course the keepers error, but he is still a great keeper).

Rodgers has indeed shown a lack of self restraint and a lack of class at the very least - he should have been above griping about decisions by the officials.
The reason his team didn't beat City is because they were not the better side.
From what I saw yesterday their performance was on a par with ours, but no better.
There was an offside call by the linesman that I thought was dubious (and haven't been able to check due to the match not recording as scheduled), but I was grateful to take the decision, especially as Hart picked the ball up out of the net.
The number of times your players attacked our vulnerable left flank I lost count of, yet they failed to capitalise on our big weakness (ie Lescott isn't the fastest centreback in the league by quite some measure).
Suarez should see a doctor - he has serious problems staying on his feet, and was falling about throughout the course of the game. I (and a Stadium full of City supporters) are more than glad he wasn't signed by City. We've had a belly full of players who aren't a full shilling, and Suarez would be greeted with comments along the lines of "play like a man or fook off home to Uruguay"!
You don't see any of our forwards falling over because they felt someones breath as they ran past, and indeed Aguero has fought players off dragging his shirt and scored, so we don't take to Suarez' diving too easily.
As I said, Liverpool have been the best team to play at ours in the league this season, and I thought they were going to go home with a point, so I was relieved that they left with none.
Sometimes it goes that way

although it looked like there was contact, i think suarez' reputation may have cost us the decision.
Guys, worry not and simply be realistic. Liverpool did not win against Man City and Chelsea simply because they are not quite yet at that level (in the real crunch games), which is why they will not win the league this season, although I firmly believe that future results will keep them mathematically in contention.
However, what's important is that Liverpool competed extremely well in both games and gave both Chelsea and City a tough time, and indeed could've easily come away with more. In past seasons, they would've most likely been well beaten in both games, and so important progress is being made! :)
At the moment Chelsea, City, and also Arsenal, have the edge on quality, but that's not something that can't be rectified with a few judicious signings in relevant areas in the January transfer window and/or in the close season, in readiness for a real push at the title next year.
Anyway, I fully expect Liverpool to beat Hull and get their top four spot back on track!
Marco.

That was my initial response when I first saw it - Suarez was making a meal of it.
When all the replays from different angles were shown I changed my opinion. The referee doesn't have the luxury of having all the replays to base a decision on, so based on my initial observation I agree with Howard Webb and Suarez was making a meal of it.

You're not giving enough credit to the way Tony Pulis set his side up for the game.
If Palace can manage to play in such an organised way for the rest of the season then they'll get results and stay up.
The way their midfield and defence squeezed out the space in front of goal was superbly executed, even if it was frustrating to watch as a City supporter.
Palace even had a number of opportunities to bite back and score - it was only a very sharp looking Joe Hart that denied them.
It was not a hugely entertaining game, but it was a game that was won ugly.
Our title aspirations are very obviously there for all to see.
Palace are in good hands with Pulis - failing a total disaster Palace will survive on yesterday's showing.

I think Man City and Liverpool are the class of the PL just now, even though it hurts to state that as an Arsenal supporter, I have also been impressed by Southampton's performance so far this season. If City can improve their abysmal away form they are a safe bet to top the league at the end of the season IMO. Can anyone explain why they are failing to win their away games as this doesn't make sense to me when compared to their home form. The flippant answer would be that the home support gives them a lift, if so then do they deserve to win the league because in my book they should be equally dominant at home or away...

Can anyone explain why they are failing to win their away games as this doesn't make sense to me when compared to their home form
That's the million dollar question.
We don't play any differently away from home.
I'm hoping we're about to leave the away losses behind us.
Out of the last ten games we have won nine and drawn one, and one of those games was against the reigning European Champions in their own back yard.
The one common thing with many of our away losses is that the game should have been buried by half time, and we've played in a manner that should have buried the game.
All of the away opposition teams (Chelsea excepted) have sat back and defended with great resolve in the face of the onslaught, and managed to stop us from scoring.
The way the Villa game unfolded was farcical, proper Roy of The Rovers stuff.
Crystal Palace the other day were very organised - Tony Pulis pulled off what was though to be impossible and galvanised his band of strugglers into a proper team.
The goals scored against us have all been on the counter attack, and for a big chunk of the season our rock at the back has been sidelined with injuries.
Without Vinnie pulling the strings at the back we frequently look vulnerable.
Hopefully he can maintain his fitness for the rest of the season.
The fact that Liverpool broke through our defence so many times on Boxing Day is a testament to the way they've come on as a team.
The return fixture will be a tough one for sure - I'm looking forward to that one.
Now that we've passed the halfway point of the season there's much to be positive about being a City supporter.
Following New Year's Day trip to Swansea (can we kill that away loss monkey?) we have Blackburn in the FA Cup (OK, it's away, but I don't expect our campaign to stop in Lancashire), followed by the first League Cup semi final game against West Ham. I'm sure the return game will be a toughie.
Then there's that much vaunted tie with FC Barcelona - talk about stuff in your wildest dreams - if you'd told me this would be happening 10 years ago I'd have told you to go away and stop talking daft. Well not quite, but that would have been the gist of it ;)

I'll always have fond memories of the brilliance he showed in front of goal - the over shoulder goal against Villa, the shouldered in goal against Norwich, the "Why Always Me?" goal in the 1-6 mauling at Old Trafford.
The way he behaved himself at Wembley in both the Semi Final and Final of the FA Cup, and took a battering without reacting from Ferdinand, Vidic and Huth (the Huth challenge in particular was a shocker).
That's the way I'll remember Mario.
It's a shame he can't be like that all the time :(
I think what Martinez has done at Everton is the most impressive out of the PL.
Wondering if Utd wished they had gone for him.

What it also shows is that Everton were hampered in their quest for silverware over the last 11 years by a mediocre manager and back room staff. As soon as they left, and a new team came in, their performance rocketed.

Harsh but true!

I believe that Mario is on the transfer list again - any takers? :eyebrows:
I'd have him at the Villa in a heartbeat. Shenanigans and all.

IYO.
The set of players Moyes left behind were the best at Everton in his 11 years at the club, Martinez did some great business with loan deals but has had the advantage of a more developed Barkley who is an exceptional talent. David Moyes is a top manager and did a marvellous job in his time at Goodison and the team punched above their weight every season. If I have any criticism of him it is that he is defence minded, but then he was a centre half .
IMO of course.

I see you have a picture of Mario with his behavioural advisors :D

+1. Also, I think Stan left out the 'wink' smiley from his earlier post (and Chris missed the irony) - if not, I couldn't disagree more!

The second half of the season kicks off in the morning, and the irony of the possibility of Everton finishing the season in a higher position than Moyes' current team is not lost on me :D
The fact that it's The Rags makes it all the more the more pleasurable to watch.

And there lies the problem. Even if you assembled the most gifted musicians in an orchestra, a lousy conductor will not get the best performance out of the orchestra.
The same applies to a football team. Moyes has acquired his fame and respect off the back of the brilliance of the Everton players, not the other way round. When he joined ManU, his new band of famous and gifted players accepted his alleged abilities at face value. But they have figured out by now that it was misplaced. Notice how many of the ManU players have been resorting to their own initiatives on the pitch in order to secure a win. All that Moyes offer them is a worried looking face. Sometimes I ask myself if it is the same interview with Moyes that gets shown on TV after a ManU game. The expression and body language never changes from that of a worried manager to something resembling a happy one.
We'll have to strongly agree to disagree, chaps, about Moyes. Let's see what happens next season.
Chris, I'll bet you a tenner that Man Utd will finish above Everton - fancy it? That'll be £20 towards some CDs I'll have at the end of the season, along with the other tenner I'll be taking from Stu! ;)
Anyway, as I predicted, Liverpool beat Hull, so their fight for a top 4 finish marches on! :) Oh, and that 'crap' team Arsenal won again and still remain top! :eyebrows:
Marco.
